Roommate

Right before graduation, our Resident Advisor (RA), Jasper Hollister, posts a message in the group chat announcing a hygiene inspection in two days. At the same time, he sets up a pool and demands 200 dollars from each of us to hire a professional cleaner. I immediately ask, "How on earth does a cleaning service cost 800 dollars for a tiny four-person dorm room?" Jasper instantly gets defensive and snaps, "If we get held back from graduating because of you, are you gonna take the blame?" Not wanting any drama, I just pay up and spend the next two days quietly grinding out my thesis at the library. On inspection day, I get a furious phone call from our Residence Hall Director, Deborah Campbell, screaming at me to get back to the room immediately. I push the door open to find the other three beds are spotless. Meanwhile, my bed and desk are buried under a mountain of takeout containers and trash that reeks to high heaven.

Chapter 1

"Theodore Ashcroft, is this your idea of cleaning up?" Deborah Campbell, our Residence Hall Director, asked sternly with a frown. She held the hygiene inspection sheet and pointed at my bed. "You're a college student, and you can't even keep up with basic personal hygiene? Your whole dorm room failed inspection just because of your bed!"

"Ms. Campbell, this trash isn't mine." I was panicking so badly that my voice was shaking. "I've been at the library all day these past few days. When I left this morning, my bed was spotless."

"I mean, look at it. You're not seriously trying to tell me someone framed you by throwing trash all over your bed, are you?" Ms. Campbell's face was stern as she slashed a big X across the hygiene inspection sheet.

"Not only do you not keep things clean regularly, but now you're making excuses during inspection? I'm afraid your dorm just lost its Model Room standing for the semester."

Just then, our Resident Advisor (RA), Jasper Hollister, happened to walk back in with Zane Wexler and Cody Stratton.

"Oh, my God! It stinks in here!" Jasper fanned the air in disgust the moment he stepped inside. Then, he frowned at my bed and said, "Theodore, we've talked to you about this a million times. How do you still let your bed get this bad?"

Zane quickly chimed in sarcastically, "Yeah, Theodore. The three of us actually pitched in to hire a cleaner. We were going to have her do your area too, but she said your bed was way too disgusting. Even if we paid her extra, she wouldn't touch it."

I stared at them in disbelief, blood rushing to my head.

Ms. Campbell shook her head. "You guys really drew the short straw with a roommate like him."

With that, she turned and walked away with the hygiene inspection sheet in hand.

The moment the door clicked shut, the pained expression on Jasper's face vanished instantly.

"What did you do to my bed?" I stared daggers at him, my nails digging deep into my palms. "And what about the 200 dollars I gave you for the cleaning fee?"

Jasper walked over to his desk and let out a scoff. "The cleaner refused to take the job because of how filthy the bed was. It's not like there's anything I can do about it. As for the 200 dollars… consider it compensation for emotional damages. You know, for contaminating our living space."

I was so furious that I rushed up to grab him by the collar. "Give me my money back!"

"Hey, what the hell are you doing?" Zane and Cody immediately tossed their phones aside. Then, they stood up and shoved me hard from both sides.

I stumbled and crashed into the metal-frame bed. A sharp pain shot through my lower back.

Jasper looked down at me contemptuously.

"I'm the RA, and I'm ordering you to clean this up right now. Otherwise, I'll tell Mr. Caldwell about this. Let's see if he believes us or a slob like you."

With red-rimmed eyes, I stared at the trash covering my bed. Humiliation and rage churned in my chest, but I clenched my teeth and forced myself not to explode.

That evening, the advisor, Aidan Caldwell, posted the names of the dorms that ranked bottom in the hygiene inspection in the class group chat.

Jasper immediately posted a little speech in the group chat, acting all noble and righteous.

"As the RA, I feel terrible that I couldn't get Theodore to keep up with his hygiene. Our dorm lost points and dragged down the whole class because of it. My deepest apologies to everyone."

The group chat instantly blew up with messages."Theodore is so disgusting. I heard his bed is covered in moldy takeout.""Jasper has my full support. Having a roommate like Theodore is the unluckiest thing ever.""Mr. Caldwell needs to move Theodore out! Don't let one rotten apple spoil the whole barrel!"I stared at the screen full of accusations, my hands going cold."The trash isn't mine, and I paid the cleaning fee too."But the moment my message was sent, it was instantly drowned out by the barrage of condemnation. No one wanted to hear my side of the story. All they did was attack me.I bit my lip until it bled.Fighting back the nausea, I cleaned up the bed with a dark look on my face. The next morning, brimming with grievance and anger, I knocked on Mr. Caldwell's office door."Mr. Caldwell, I want to report Jasper and the others for ganging up on me and cheating me out of my money."The second I opened the door, I froze.Jasper was sitting across from Mr. Caldwel

It had taken me an entire year of pulling all-nighters to write that paper.I clearly remembered that I didn't have my faculty advisor, Everly Moore's, signature. So, Jasper—who was then the student body president—offered to submit the paper on my behalf. He not only replaced my name with his own, but he also didn't even bother changing a single thing in the paper.I was so overwhelmed by anger, shock, and frustration that I could barely think straight.Unable to take it for even a second, I dashed back to the dorm like a madman."Have you no shame? You know perfectly well who wrote this paper! How dare you steal my work!"I was shaking with rage as I shoved my phone screen right in Jasper's face.Jasper was lounging in his chair with his legs crossed, playing a video game. He snorted and said, "Steal? Theodore, you'd better have proof before you start making accusations."I was the one who emailed in the paper, paid the publication fee, and signed off with Ms. Moore. I stared at the puddle of mocha on my laptop, my mind going completely blank.Zane had destroyed my laptop and the only evidence I had!Like a headless chicken, I rushed over to the campus security office and applied to check the surveillance footage.Hoping to prove Jasper and the others were the ones who left the trash on my bed yesterday, I used the legitimate excuse that someone had been dumping trash in the hallway outside the dorm."The surveillance for the 4th floor of Building Four?" The security guard checked his computer and shook his head. "Unfortunately, the cameras on that floor were under maintenance yesterday afternoon, so nothing was recorded."I stood there dumbfounded, cold sweat trickling down my back.Jasper was the student body president. He must have checked the maintenance schedule in advance, and that was why he'd been so brazen. My laptop was destroyed, the surveillance footage was gone, Mr. Caldwell sided with Jasper, and Mr. Lockwood didn't believe me.

With bloodshot eyes, I screamed those words out in front of the whole class. The force of it stunned everyone into silence for a brief moment. Then, the murmurs started up again."Has Theodore lost his mind? He lives like a pig, and now he's trying to take credit for Jasper's paper?""Seriously, jealousy messes people up. The guy's a broke loser who can barely work his own phone—what would he know about raw data anyway?""Mr. Caldwell, just call security and have Theodore thrown out already. Stop letting him waste everyone's time."As the vicious mockery swirled around me, I clenched my jaw so hard I tasted blood in my mouth.A brief flicker of panic flashed through Jasper's eyes, but he masked it just as quickly. He then cleared his throat with forced calm, his features rearranging themselves into the righteous indignation of a man gravely wronged."Theodore, I know you're upset because our Model Room standing was revoked. I can even accept you blaming me for not helping you c

Jasper's forehead broke out in a cold sweat.Forcing himself to appear calm, he swallowed hard and began reciting the explanation he had prepared in advance."The derivation mainly uses eigenvalue decomposition to map the high-dimensional matrix to a lower-dimensional space, and then—""Wrong!" I cut him off mercilessly. "That's a logical dead end I planted on purpose to prevent anyone from stealing my data."The hall erupted in shock."What do you mean?" someone couldn't help but ask.I explained, "In the final draft I sent you to submit for me, I deliberately flipped the value range of this parameter. Without cross-referencing the supplementary dataset on my laptop for a second correction, this matrix would fall apart at step three."It could never produce the result for step four. Jasper, you didn't even spot the trap, so how can you claim you wrote this paper?"All the color drained out of Jasper's face."You're making this up! You set this whole thing up just to trap me!"

Confronted with Professor Kline's firsthand testimony, Jasper swayed and nearly lost his footing."No, that's not how it was. Who's to say Theodore didn't snoop on my paper five months ago and deliberately set this whole thing up just to frame me today? Yeah! That has to be it!"He suddenly jerked his head up, as if he'd just grabbed hold of his last lifeline."Theodore can't even produce a single draft right now—what proof does he have that he wrote the entire paper on his own?"Seeing him doubling down with zero remorse, I decided I was done holding back.I unzipped my backpack and pulled out a hard drive."Zane, that mocha you spilled on my laptop yesterday did fry the motherboard. But you thought thrashing my laptop meant all the evidence was gone?"Yesterday afternoon, I begged the repair shop owner for help, and he stayed up all night working on it. He used jumper wire recovery to pull every last bit of data off this hard drive."I walked up to the podium and plugged the

The moment those words left my mouth, all the colors drained out of Zane's and Cody's faces. They instinctively clutched the pockets holding their phones, their eyes darting away nervously. It had never even crossed their minds that I would check the food delivery records in front of the entire class, so naturally, they hadn't bothered to clear their order history."Go on, show us. What's the matter? Are you scared?" I continued in a louder voice, "This meal adds up to nearly 200 dollars—you didn't happen to buy it with the cleaning fees I paid, did you?""What gives you the right to go through our phones? That's private!" Zane backed away guiltily, not daring to pull out his phone.Just as their guilty consciences were about to get the better of them, a guy stood up from the back row of the lecture hall.It was Rudy Barlow, the student council secretary who lived in the dorm room right next to mine."I can testify!" As Mr. Lockwood took all of this in, his expression turned grim. Then, under the scornful gazes of the entire class, they were led out of the lecture hall.Three days later, the college issued an official notice.Jasper was expelled for severe academic fraud, defrauding me of money, bullying, and bribing Mr. Caldwell. Due to the egregious nature of his offenses, he was denied his diploma outright.Zane and Cody were placed on academic probation, had their graduation deferred by one year, and received a permanent stain on their academic record
