Double the Danger, Double the Desire

The ink on the settlement contract was dry, but to Valerie Vance, it smelled like pure, unadulterated death.

She sat stiffly in the back seat of a pitch-black Maybach, her spine rigid against the hand-stitched leather upholstery. Outside the tinted glass, rain-slicked iron gates swung open with a heavy, mechanical groan, revealing the looming silhouette of the Rossi estate. The mansion sat atop the estate’s private hill like a shadowed fortress, built from jagged dark granite and lit by amber lanterns that cut through the thick New York fog.

Valerie looked down at her hands. Her fingers were trembling, though she gripped her silk clutch so tightly her knuckles had turned bone-white.

“It’s just a business deal, Val,” her father’s pathetic, whiskey-soaked voice echoed in her mind, repeating the same desperate speech he had delivered three nights ago over the ruined financial books of Vance Enterprises. “The Rossi family absorbs our debt, they clear our name with the SEC, and you save us from dying in the street. Don Lucian Rossi won't ask much of you. He can’t. The man is a recluse, an invalid. You’ll live like a queen in a gilded cage, and all you have to do is sign your name.”

Valerie swallowed the bitter taste in her mouth. Her father had omitted the most crucial detail: you don't make deals with the Rossi syndicate without paying in flesh. And tonight, Valerie was the currency.

The Maybach rolled to a smooth stop beneath the massive stone portico. Before the driver could even step out, the rear passenger door was pulled open from the outside.

A sharp draft of cold midnight air rushed into the warm cabin, carrying the scent of damp earth, heavy rain, and expensive cedarwood.

"Mrs. Rossi," a stern, monolithic guard in a crisp black suit said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth. "The Don is waiting."

Valerie took a long, steadying breath. She smoothed down the front of her gown, an exquisite, skin-tight silk creation the color of spilled wine, featuring a daring plunge down her spine and a dangerously high slit along her left thigh. If she was being delivered to the wolves, she refused to look like a victim. She held her chin high, swung her legs out of the vehicle, and stepped onto the wet stone steps.

The heavy double doors of the mansion stood wide open. Stepping into the grand foyer felt like entering an ancient cathedral dedicated to absolute power. High vaulted ceilings stretched overhead, while floor-to-ceiling marble walls reflected the dim light of massive crystal chandeliers.

Standing at the foot of the grand imperial staircase, leaning casually against the polished banister, was a man who looked like he had been sculpted by a dark, merciless god.

He was broad-shouldered, towering well over six feet, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that fit his muscular frame like armor. His dark hair was carelessly pushed back, but it was his face that made Valerie’s heart hammer violently against her ribs. He had sharp, razor-defined jawlines, full lips set in a lazy, arrogant smirk, and eyes that burned with a terrifying, molten amber light.

As Valerie walked deeper into the foyer, his amber gaze slowly dragged down her body, taking in every curve of the wine-red silk, devouring her with an unashamed, predatory intensity that made her skin instantly flush with heat.

Is this him? Valerie thought, her pulse spiking. This is Don Lucian? He doesn't look like an invalid. He looks like a monster waiting to feed.

Before she could form a sentence, the heavy, rhythmic click of mechanical wheels rolling across the marble floor broke the suffocating silence.

From the shadowed corridor to the right of the staircase, a gilded wheelchair rolled slowly into the light.

The man sitting in the leather chair was dressed impeccably in a dark velvet suit, a plush wool blanket draped carefully over his lap. His face was pale, almost translucent beneath the chandelier lights, with sharp, hollow cheeks and dark circles bruised beneath his eyes. His gaze was fixed straight ahead, cold, dull, and entirely unblinking.

Valerie stopped in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as she looked back and forth between the two men. They shared the exact same aristocratic jawline, the same high cheekbones, the same pitch-black hair.

Twins.

The towering man leaning against the banister straightened up, pushing his hands smoothly into his trouser pockets. He took three slow, deliberate steps toward Valerie, his boots clicking heavily against the floor. When he stopped, he was so close she could feel the heat radiating off his broad chest, catching the sharp, masculine scent of dark tobacco, espresso, and cedarwood that clung to him.

"Welcome to the Rossi estate," the man said. His voice was a low, resonant baritone that vibrated straight down Valerie’s spine, smooth as liquid silk and dangerous as a hidden blade. He bowed his head slightly, his amber eyes locking onto hers with a wicked spark. "I am Damian Rossi. The enforcer of this family. And this..."

Damian gestured lazily with one hand toward the quiet man in the wheelchair.

"...is your husband. Don Lucian Rossi."

Valerie felt the room tilt slightly. She forced herself to look away from Damian's overwhelming presence and turned her attention down to Lucian.

The feared ruler of the New York underworld, the man whose name made international bankers tremble and rival cartel bosses vanish into thin air, sat before her like a fragile glass figurine. He didn't offer his hand. He didn't smile. He didn't even turn his head to acknowledge her arrival. He simply stared blankly into the distance, his breathing slow and shallow.

"Lucian?" Valerie said softly, taking a cautious step forward. Her voice wavered just a fraction, but she caught herself immediately, straightening her spine. "I'm Valerie."

Silence stretched across the cavernous foyer. Lucian remained motionless, an icy wall of complete indifference separating them.

Damian let out a low, amused huff behind her. He stepped into her space once more, his tall frame looming over her from behind. He leaned in so close his warm breath fanned across the sensitive, exposed skin of her neck, sending a violent shiver cascading down her body.

"Don't waste your breath, little bride," Damian whispered, his tone dripping with a dangerous, dark intimacy. "My brother doesn't do warm greetings. In fact, he rarely speaks to anyone these days."

Valerie turned her head sharply, her dark eyes flashing with sudden, defensive fire as she met Damian's amber gaze. "I didn't ask for your commentary, Damian."

Damian’s dark brows arched in surprise, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his lips. He liked the bite in her tone. Most people trembled when he stepped into a room; this sold bride was standing her ground in a house full of killers.

"Feisty," Damian murmured, his gaze dropping to her trembling lips before rising back to her eyes. "Good. You'll need that fire if you expect to survive in this house."

He snapped his fingers twice, the sharp sound echoing off the marble walls. Two young maidservants immediately emerged from the background, bowing their heads respectfully.

"Show the Don's new wife up to the master suite," Damian commanded, his smooth voice turning ice-cold as he took charge. "Make sure she has everything she needs. It's her wedding night, after all."

He turned his back on her, walking over to the gilded wheelchair. Without saying another word, Damian grabbed the handles of Lucian's chair and began pushing his silent brother down the dark hallway, their shadows stretching long and sinister across the floor.

Just before they vanished into the darkness of the corridor, Damian paused. He glanced over his broad shoulder, his molten amber eyes locking onto Valerie one last time.

"Rest well, Valerie," Damian called out, his voice laced with a dark, unspoken promise that made her heart race wildly. "The Rossi estate gets very dark at night... and you never know what's lurking in the shadows."

Valerie stood frozen in the center of the grand foyer, watching them disappear. The air around her felt suffocatingly heavy, rich with luxury, danger, and a sudden, terrifying heat she couldn't explain. She pulled her silk dress tighter around herself, her mind racing as the maidservants gestured toward the grand staircase.

She had arrived expecting a cold, loveless arrangement with an invalid. Instead, she had stepped directly into a den of wolves, and the night had only just begun.
