Morning arrived not with soft light, but with the cold, gray haze of lingering fog over the Rossi estate.

My body felt impossibly heavy, every muscle aching with a deep, throbbing soreness. The bedsheets were cold beside me. Lucian was long gone, leaving only the faint scent of cedar and tobacco on the linen pillow where his head had rested.

I sat up, pulling the soft duvet over my chest. On the bedside table sat a fresh ivory envelope sealed with dark red wax, alongside a sleek black box.

I reached out with trembling fingers and broke the seal on the letter.

“Wear the black velvet dress in the box. The cartel leadership arrives at noon. Remember your place, Valerie. You are the Don’s wife, untouchable, unquestioned, and obedient.”

There was no signature. It didn't need one.

I opened the black box. Inside lay a floor-length dress of heavy, midnight-black velvet, designed with long sleeves, a high collar, and a dramatic open keyhole cut across the chest that would leave the upper swell of my breasts exposed while keeping the rest of my body covered like a dark queen.

By eleven-thirty, I was standing in front of the vanity mirror, locking the delicate silver clasp of the dress around my neck. The velvet was thick and warm, clinging to my waist, but the open chest slit served as a constant reminder of the leash I was under.

A quiet click echoed near the wardrobe wall.

I didn't even turn around. I could hear the smooth, heavy footsteps of Damian moving across the room before his shadow fell over the mirror reflection.

He had discarded his formal suit jacket. He wore a fitted black tactical dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms to reveal the intricate dark tattoos creeping up his skin. A black leather shoulder holster was strapped across his chest, housing a heavy silver handgun.

He stopped right behind me, his dark eyes burning into my reflection.

"You survived Lucian's night," Damian purred softly, his voice a low, raspy rumble that made the tiny hairs on my arms stand up.

"Barely," I whispered, keeping my eyes locked on his in the mirror. "You enjoyed watching it, didn't you?"

Damian didn't deny it. A slow, wicked smirk pulled at the corner of his lips as he stepped closer, his heavy chest pressing lightly against my bare back. His large, warm hands came around my waist, his long fingers spreading over the thick black velvet of my dress.

"I enjoyed watching how completely you surrendered to him," Damian whispered into my ear, his hot breath making me shiver. "He thought he was breaking you. But I know better, little bride. I know your body only breaks when you're getting exactly what you crave."

"Damian..." I warned, but my voice broke on the second syllable.

"Don't worry," Damian murmured, his thumb rubbing small, dangerous circles over my hipbone. "I'm not going to touch you now. We have visitors. Dangerous men who think they can slide into this estate and carve up our territory."

His hands slid up to my shoulders, turning me around to face him directly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite silver brooch shaped like a striking viper with dark ruby eyes.

He leaned in, pinning the heavy brooch over the velvet fabric right above my heart. His fingers brushed against the exposed skin of my chest, sending a quick spark of heat straight down to my core.

"Keep your head high today, Valerie," Damian said, his dark eyes darkening with absolute lethargy and protection. "Rival Don Vicente Moretti is coming. He is a dog who likes to test weak fences. If he looks at you too long, don't look away. Show him you belong to the Rossis."

"And if he realizes Lucian is playing a game?" I asked quietly.

Damian lowered his face until his lips were a millimeter from mine.

"Then I tear his throat out in the middle of the courtyard," Damian growled softly.

The main courtyard was quiet as a graveyard when the caravan of black armored SUVs rolled through the wrought-iron gates.

I stood on the elevated stone steps outside the grand entrance, flanked on my left by Damian, who stood tall, rigid, and deadly with his hand resting near his shoulder holster. To my right sat Lucian in his leather wheelchair, dressed in a flawless navy suit, his face cold, pale, and unreadable.

The door of the lead SUV opened, and a man stepped out into the foggy afternoon air.

Vicente Moretti looked like a lion in a tailored suit. He was in his late thirties, built broad with silver streaks through his dark hair, a jagged scar running from his left eyebrow down to his jawline. He carried a silver-topped cane, stepping forward with an arrogant, predatory swagger that signaled he feared no man on the East Coast.

Behind him marched six heavily armed guards, their leather jackets pulled back to reveal automatic weapons.

"Lucian!" Vicente called out, his voice loud, boisterous, and echoing off the stone walls. "It has been too long, my friend. I heard you took a fall six months ago, but I didn't believe the rumors until I saw you stuck in that rolling chair."

Lucian didn't blink. He sat motionless, his voice cutting through the courtyard like a razor blade. "You're trespassing on my estate with armed men, Vicente. Speak your business before my enforcers remove you."

Vicente laughed, a harsh, barking sound, as he stepped up the marble stairs. But as he reached the top step, his sharp, amber eyes drifted away from Lucian and landed squarely on me.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes swept over the black velvet dress, lingering on the exposed skin of my chest and the diamond line of my throat, before sliding up to meet my gaze. A slow, distasteful smile spread across his scarred face.

"Well, well," Vicente purred, stepping an inch closer to me than necessary. "They told me you took a wife to secure your debt from the Vance family. I assumed she would be a plain girl."

He raised a gloved hand, reaching out to touch the silver viper brooch pinned to my dress.

Before his fingers could make contact, the sharp, heavy metallic click of a gun being cocked echoed right beside my ear.

Damian was suddenly there, stepping straight between me and the rival Don. The cold barrel of Damian’s silver handgun was pressed directly against the center of Vicente’s forehead.

The courtyard froze. Vicente’s six guards drew their weapons instantly, pointing them at Damian. The Rossi snipers on the roof racked their rifles in unison, pointing laser sights directly at the heads of Vicente’s men.

The tension turned to pure, suffocating poison.

"Touch her," Damian growled, his voice dropping into a guttural, demonic register that sent a shiver straight through my spine, "and I leave your brains on these marble steps before your men can pull a single trigger."

Vicente’s smile faded, his amber eyes narrowing as he stared down the barrel of Damian’s gun.

"Careful, enforcer," Vicente hissed softly. "I came to negotiate shipping routes with your Don."

"You negotiate with your mouth, Moretti," Lucian’s quiet, icy voice commanded from the wheelchair behind us. "Not with your hands on my wife."

Vicente took a slow, agonizing step backward, raising his gloved hands in mock surrender. Damian didn't lower the gun by a single millimeter until Vicente was three steps down.

Vicente looked up at me, his eyes gleaming with a dark, dangerous intrigue that made my blood run cold.

"She is magnificent, Lucian," Vicente murmured softly, his gaze locked on mine. "A shame she belongs to a man who can't even stand up to hold her."

Vicente turned and walked toward the grand double doors of the estate for the meeting, leaving a trail of pure violence hanging in the foggy air.

Damian slowly lowered his gun, holstering it beneath his jacket. He turned his head to look at me, his dark eyes burning with an obsessive, terrifying possession that matched the cold fire in Lucian's eyes beside him.

"Inside, Valerie," Lucian commanded softly from his chair. "The real game begins now."

The heavy double doors of the grand master suite clicked shut behind us, locking out the quiet corridors of the estate, the scent of expensive wine, and the cold reality of global finance. The room was bathed in the warm, flickering glow of the fireplace, casting long, intimate shadows across the dark velvet canopy bed and polished mahogany floors.I barely made it three steps past the threshold before Damian’s large, calloused hands came around my waist from behind. He pulled me flush against his rock-hard chest, his head dipping down to drag his mouth across the sensitive curve of my shoulder, biting down softly enough to make a sharp, breathless gasp tear from my throat."Six hundred million," Damian growled into my skin, his deep, raspy voice sending an electric tremor straight down my spine. His hands moved up my body, his broad fingers gripping the rich crimson silk of my dress, tracing the structured bodice down to the zipper at my lower back. "Do you have any idea what it did

The dining room of the Rossi estate was cold, grand, and suffocatingly quiet.A heavy crystal chandelier hung above the thirty-foot mahogany table, casting sharp, glittering light over polished sterling silver, untouched crystal goblets, and the thick leather binders I had stacked neatly to the right of my plate.Contessa Isabella Sforza sat at the far end of the table, her ivory coat removed to reveal a tailored black velvet gown. She took a slow, delicate sip of an eighty-year-old Barolo, her dark eyes glittering with amused arrogance across the candlelit expanse. To my right sat Lucian, immaculate as always in a dark suit, his long fingers casually tracing the rim of his wine glass. To my left, Damian sat back, his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze locked onto Isabella’s two lead enforcers who stood rigidly against the carved oak paneling of the room."A lovely vintage, Valerie," Isabella said smoothly, setting her glass down on the white linen. "Though I doubt fine wine will m

The ink on the new syndicate charters hadn't even dried before the front doors of the Rossi Citadel opened to foreign soil.It was barely noon two days after the Council meeting. Rain tapped a steady, rhythmic cadence against the high arched windows of the grand study. I sat behind Don Vicente’s former desk, now mine, reviewing the re-routed revenue ledgers from the newly acquired Jersey casino network.Lucian stood by the hearth, stoking the fire, while Damian leaned against the edge of the mahogany desk, stripping down a custom 9mm handgun with practiced, rhythmic precision.A soft knock at the heavy oak doors broke the quiet.Gideon, our head of estate security, stepped into the room, his face unusually grim."Don Lucian, Don Damian... Mrs. Rossi," Gideon said, bowing his head slightly. "An unscheduled motorcade just cleared the main security gate. Three armored Maybachs bearing diplomatic plates."Lucian paused, the iron poker suspended mid-air. His dark eyes shifted toward the do

The air inside the underground Grand Chamber of the Rossi Citadel was thick with the scent of beeswax candles, aged mahogany, and absolute terror. For fifty years, the Syndicate Council had met in this cavernous, windowless hall beneath the city. The walls were lined with cold black granite, carved with the crests of the five founding families. But tonight, three of those family crests, Falcone, Moretti, and Vance, were draped in heavy black silk, symbolizing the complete extinction of their leadership. It was 8:00 PM.The heavy iron double doors swung open with a slow, booming echo that silenced every hushed whisper in the room.Twenty capos, high-ranking lieutenants, and remaining family representatives stood at attention along the length of the fifty-foot obsidian council table. Their faces were pale, their hands rigid at their sides. They had all heard what happened at Pier 4. They knew Old Falcone was dead, Dominic was in chains, and the old order had been burned to ashes in a si

The heavy iron gates of the Rossi estate slammed shut behind our convoy, sealing out the damp night air, the police sirens wailing in the distant city, and the blood spilled across Pier 4.By the time the elevator doors slid open on the penthouse floor, the adrenaline in my veins hadn't faded, it had morphed into something raw, dark, and intoxicating.I tossed my mud-stained wool coat onto the marble floor of the foyer. Behind me, the heavy wooden doors clicked shut, locked by Lucian's automated security grid.We had won. Not just a battle over a single pier, but total, undisputed control of the Eastern Seaboard. Old Falcone was dead, Dominic was in a cell beneath the estate, and the five families had no choice but to bow to the throne.Damian walked in behind me, stripping his black tactical vest off in one smooth motion and letting it drop heavy to the floor. His white shirt underneath was torn at the shoulder, stained with rain, gunpowder, and the dark splatter of Falcone's enforce

The fog rolling off Newark Bay hung thick as sea smoke, swallowing the giant silhouettes of the shipping cranes at Pier 4.It was 4:15 AM.I sat in the dark interior of an armored black SUV parked three hundred yards from Warehouse 9, watching six live security feeds on a tactical monitor resting across my lap. I had traded my velvet dresses for a dark tactical turtleneck, fitted trousers, and a heavy wool coat.Beside me in the shadows, Lucian sat with an earpiece tucked into his left ear, his hands resting over the silver head of his cane. He was dressed flawlessly, a dark shadow of composure, but the cold intensity in his eyes signaled that the game was officially live.Over the comms, Damian’s voice came through as a low, quiet raspy growl. "The rat just crossed the perimeter. Dominic brought twelve men, four vehicles. They’re taking the bait at the north bay door.""Keep them contained, Damian," I spoke softly into my microphone, my eyes glued to Camera 3. "Don't breach until all
