Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
Lexi's friend got the hint and immediately held up her phone, going live on social media and shoving the camera right in my face.

Riding on the massive popularity of last night's party, the live feed was instantly flooded with fans obsessed with them as a couple.

Lexi, who was arrogant just a second ago, instantly teared up the moment she faced the camera. She looked so delicate, as if a gust of wind could blow her over.

"Haley, I know Nate just fired you and you're feeling bitter. If anyone here can help you, we definitely will."

"But bringing a fake deed covered in alcohol to steal my venue is just too much. Who in our circle doesn't know Nate bought this place for me?"

Her eyelashes fluttered, and she squeezed out two fake tears, acting like she was the victim.

I reached out to grab the phone, but just as my fingers touched the edge, someone shoved my shoulder hard from behind.

My back crashed into the armrest of a lounge chair, and a sharp pain shot up my spine.

The comments on the live feed instantly flooded the screen.

Someone even posted a blurry photo of me wearing a wedding dress outside the victory party last night.

[Wow, this is the fired agent? She looks scary.]

[That's the crazy woman who waited outside the party in a wedding dress last night, right? She failed to force a proposal so she came to crash the party.]

[Let's go, guys! Let's head to the pool and stop this woman from bullying our Lexi!]

The screen full of insults pierced my eyes. I clutched the hem of my skirt, my chest tightening.

Seeing me clutching my back in silence, Lexi deliberately pushed the camera closer to me.

I stared at this arrogant idiot. The pain in my back made me wince, and for a moment, I didn't have the strength to speak.

I didn't know what it was about me that triggered yet another round of cyberbullying.

At this moment, my lawyer finally broke free from the bodyguards, squeezed through the crowd, pulled tax records from his briefcase, and held them high toward the cameras.

"Everyone, I have tax records here that prove this venue belongs to my client, Haley..."

Before he could finish, a commotion came from the entrance.

Someone yelled, "Nate is here!"

A sliver of hope rose in my heart, thinking the truth would finally come to light.

But Lexi acted like she was crazy. She suddenly grabbed my wrist.

She used her momentum to drag me down with her, straight into the deep end of the pool.

I had no time to react. We both crashed into the water. The splash soaked the lens of her phone.

Freezing cold pool water instantly flooded my mouth and nose.

I struggled desperately in the water, looking up and reaching out toward Nate on the edge.

The moment I saw him jump in and swim over, a part of my heart actually softened.

But the next second, he reached out and grabbed Lexi beside me.

He supported her to the surface, carefully carried her out, and wrapped her in a large towel.

It wasn't until that moment that the last bit of warmth in my heart completely died.

When security finally pulled me out, what awaited me wasn't concern. Instead, Lexi's friends surrounded me, holding up their phones and hurling insults.

I slumped on the cold tiles, my tears falling uncontrollably.

I had told myself I didn't love him anymore, but right now, my heart still ached.

He knew his precious teammate was a strong swimmer since childhood, and he definitely knew I was terrified of water.

"Why don't you look in the mirror? You think you can steal Lexi's man looking like that? Keep dreaming!"

"Exactly. A washed-up agent trying to ruin someone else's relationship. Disgusting."

Someone reached out and tried to shove me back into the pool.

Hearing the commotion, Lexi lifted her head from Nate's chest, tears streaming down her face.

"Nate, it was her. She crashed my party and pushed me in. If you had come any later, I don't even know what would have happened..."

"Listen to me, buddy. You're three months late on rent."The landlord stood in the doorway with his arms crossed, completely out of patience."You're out today, or I'm having my guys toss your crap straight into the dumpster."Nate gripped his phone tight. The screen glowed with a digital court summons and a final warning text from a law firm demanding their millions in penalty fees. The red numbers made his eyes burn."Just give me a few more days... I get paid soon..." His voice shook. He had lost every ounce of the swagger he used to carry."A few days?" The landlord scoffed. "You've been saying that for three months! I'm done playing games. Out. Now."With absolutely zero endorsements left, not a single legitimate swim club would touch a blacklisted liability like him.The sports world is incredibly small. Everyone knew that just to please some gold digger, he had thrown away the one agent who had single-handedly built his career from the ground up.Nobody wanted anything to do wit

The highly anticipated final qualifiers for the World Tour officially began. The stands were packed and buzzing with energy. Media cameras were zoomed in on the starting blocks. The moment the buzzer sounded, Nate felt like his limbs were filled with lead.Three months of brutal insomnia, drowning in lawsuit debts, and barely able to afford decent meals had broken him. Before he even dove in, his knees had been shaking. For the first hundred meters, pure muscle memory kept him barely hanging on to the lead pack. But his strokes were stiff, entirely losing their old, fluid grace."Nate is falling behind!" the commentator's voice echoed through the stadium speakers. "What is going on with him today? His stroke rate is completely off!"Barely halfway through the final stretch, Nate's stamina completely bottomed out.His form completely fell apart, his breathing entirely out of sync. He flailed in the water like a sinking stone. The younger swimmers he used to effortlessly leave in his wak

Half a month later, at the Astor Group's annual sports charity gala.Under the crystal chandeliers, glasses clinked. Everyone in the room was a heavy hitter in the sports and finance world. As the sole heiress of the Astor family, I was chatting and laughing with several major sponsors when I spotted a familiar face.Lexi.She was wearing a visibly rented evening gown, hovering in the corner, desperately trying to cozy up to the older men in sharp suits. It seemed she had completely given up on swimming. Now that Nate was broke and useless, she was out here hunting for her next meal ticket."Hi there, I'm Lexi." She held her champagne glass, flashing a flirtatious smile at a well-known sports investor. "I heard you just bought a new swim team?"The investor was mildly amused by her looks and was about to humor her.I held my champagne and slowly walked up onto the main stage."Everyone, welcome to tonight's gala."I smiled and leaned into the microphone, my eyes locking onto Lexi's hea

I honestly didn't expect Nate to fall this fast. That evening, I was sitting in my corner office on the top floor of the Astor building while my assistant briefed me on the day's sports news.Between losing the millions I poured into his career and facing massive breach-of-contract lawsuits from major sponsors over his scandals, he was ruined. All his bank accounts and assets were frozen. A week later. The conference room at the National Swimming Federation."Nate, did you even look at these penalty clauses?"He stared at the dense block of text, his mind instantly becoming a mess.Usually, Haley would stay up late reading these, highlight the key points, and all he had to do was sign. Now there was no one to carry the load."This... this penalty fee is absurd! You're kicking me when I'm down!" He slammed the table. The representative's expression darkened, and he pulled the contract back."Fine, then don't sign it.""Wait!" He panicked."Nate, to be honest," the representative sneered, "I think you overestimate your own worth.""Those clauses weren't there before because your ex-agent, Miss Haley, flew to our corporate headquarters herself. She argued with our executives for three straight days just to protect you, striking those penalties out line by line!""Now that she's gone, corporate has decided we aren't renewing your deal.
