Chapter 1

The drug's effects crept through my veins, and even the slightest movement of my fingers sent a dull ache through my bones. I peeled my eyes open and focused on the hand-painted, gold-gilded irises on the ceiling.

It was the Harlan family's crest. Before I turned 18, that flower had been embroidered onto the collar of every one of my haute couture nightgowns.

My fiance Kai Vaughn's voice was thick with greed beyond the door. "Eliana, are you sure this intel is reliable? Tristan is really coming back to this suite tonight?"

My best friend, Eliana Sinclair, could barely contain the excitement in her voice. "I bought this intel from his driver for 20 grand. He'll be here at 11:00 pm on the dot. Once he pushes open the door and sees a woman lying in his bed who looks exactly like the woman he's always loved…"

She scoffed. "There's no way he would pass up a meal that's been served right to his mouth. Who knows? If Mr. Harlan likes what he sees, that ten-billion-dollar project in the south of the city will be ours!"

After hearing the two of them snickering incessantly outside the door, I bit down hard on the tip of my tongue. The metallic sweetness of blood instantly flooded my throat.

I had worked myself to the bone for Kai's lousy startup, pulling all-nighters until I was coughing up blood. I had treated Eliana as my best friend, only to find them in bed together in the apartment I'd rented with my own hard-earned money.

And now, they had no qualms about acting like pimps, putting a clear price tag on me and sending me to another man's bed.

My stomach spasmed violently. My nails dug in so deep they broke against the leather upholstery, yet even that pain was nothing compared to the agony roiling inside me.

Little did they know that my father was Tristan Harlan.

Years ago, he had cheated on Mom with a starlet, and in her despair, Mom had slit her wrists and taken her own life. I had run away from home in a fit of rage.

All these years, Dad and I had tacitly stayed out of each other's lives. He had done nothing but deposit money into my bank account, terrified that I might suffer hardships or go without.

Kai and Eliana thought I was an orphan who was living off my parents' inheritance and squandering it. That was the only reason they dared to treat me as a bargaining chip without a moment's hesitation.

Dad might've been a lecherous bastard, but he was fiercely protective of his own. Many months ago, when a spoiled scion made an inappropriate remark to me, Dad immediately drove him into bankruptcy.

If he ever found out that these two scumbags had sent me to his bed as a plaything… By the time he was done with them, even death would be a luxury they could only dream of.

"Oh, I almost forgot!" Eliana deliberately raised her voice. "Once we secure the deal with Harlan Group, we should hold our wedding. I want that diamond ring Abigail had her eyes on but never had the heart to buy."

Kai chuckled indulgently. "Sure. I'll use the money I make from selling her to buy you that ring."

I stared at the ceiling, the chill in my eyes turning to solid ice.

Their intel was right. Dad would indeed come here because it was his and Mom's wedding anniversary.

Mom had taken her own life in this very room. Every year, he came back here to mourn her.

Every single year on this day, countless people would send women to his doorstep. This year, however, that little surprise happened to be me.

The very next second, the door swung open. Kai strode toward me and yanked me by the hair. A searing pain shot through my scalp.

"Don't hold this against me, Abigail Harlan. If you want someone to blame, blame yourself for having no power or influence. You deserve to be sold off like cheap goods! Even if you're toyed to death tonight, you must make Mr. Harlan happy!"

I didn't have any power or influence? I looked at his triumphant face, the corners of my mouth curling into a derisive smile. "Kai, you'd better pray that when the night's over, there's enough left of you to bury!"

"You've still got the nerve to run your mouth?" Eliana marched forward and slapped me hard across the face. A deafening ringing exploded in my ears.

"Let's change her clothes. Mr. Harlan will be here any minute now!"

Eliana smirked as she ripped open my coat and slipped a skimpy, translucent lingerie slip onto my body. "You really do look like a filthy whore," she snickered, patting my cheek in satisfaction.

I lay face down on the waterbed, drowning in humiliation. Slowly, I clenched my fists.

These two idiots had stripped Tristan Harlan's own flesh and blood bare and delivered her to his bed. The sheer depravity of it was beyond anything I'd ever heard of.

Everyone assumed that the Harlan family and the Calloway family were about to join forces through marriage—a powerful alliance that would shake up Verdia's entire business landscape. But the very next day, standing before all the media, I calmly announced, "Mr. Calloway and I are just friends."Those few words caused Calloway Group's stock price to plummet and turned Lucian into the laughingstock of all Verdia. When he found me, his eyes were teary, and his voice was trembling. "Why did you say that, Abby?"I was trimming a bouquet of freshly delivered white roses. After hearing that, I didn't even look up. "Lucian, you waited for me for ten years, only to turn into another man like Dad?" He shuddered. I set my scissors down and looked up at him. "Didn't you deliberately leak the news about our marriage alliance just to use public opinion to pressure me into saying yes? Do you really think I'd like being manipulated like that?"Lucian's face instantly went as pale as a sheet o

I looked at Vivian preening in his arms and the morbid possessiveness in his eyes before bursting into laughter. I closed in on them, and under their stunned gazes, I raised my hand and poured the entire glass of wine over Vivian. She shrieked. The red wine streamed down her hair and cheeks, leaving her as bedraggled as a drowned rat. "You must be out of your mind!"I looked at Dominic coldly. "Do you really think I would dirty my own hands for trash like you? Dominic, you overestimate yourself, and you underestimate me. What you want is to conquer me. But in my eyes, you're not even worthy of being my opponent."I couldn't even be bothered to look at him again. I turned on my heel and left.Dominic roared behind my back, "Abigail Harlan, you'll regret this! You'll come crawling back to me!"I didn't look back. Regret? The biggest regret of my life was meeting Kai, trusting Eliana, and… developing feelings for a man named Dom on that street five years ago. …I never saw Domini

My brows drew together. Dominic? The name sounded familiar. Where had I heard it before? His name went off like a bomb in my mind. He was the mysterious business partner Kai had mentioned. He was also the poisonous snake lurking in the shadows, wanting to watch my family and me fall into the abyss together. I hadn't gone looking for him yet, and he had already come knocking at my door. Dad's expression darkened in an instant. The air around him became suffocating as well. "How dare some nobody who came out of nowhere demand to see my daughter?"He snorted, his eyes filled with undisguised murderous intent. "Look into Dominic's background, Hugh. I want to see for myself who gave him the guts." I stopped him. "I'll go, Dad. I want to ask him to his face what he's after. He went to such lengths to hand me such a big gift, so I want to know what he really wants."Dad fell silent when he saw the resolve in my eyes. He knew that after five years, the little princess he had once held

There was a locked diary on the vanity. I recognized it immediately. It was the birthday gift I had given Mom. Almost as if compelled by some unseen force, I reached out and gently brushed my fingers over the cover. I ran my fingers over the delicate brass lock. The combination was our birthdays. When I flipped open the yellowed pages, Mom's familiar and elegant handwriting came into view. "Abby was clinging to me again today, telling me that when she grows up, she wants to be my knight and protect me for the rest of my life. My little princess, my only wish is for you to live a peaceful, happy life.""Tristan has been very busy lately, but I know he has me and our family in his heart."The first half of the diary was filled with warm, ordinary moments. Each and every line was brimming with joy. However, the further I turned the pages, the more hurried and scribbled her handwriting became. Eventually, it trembled across the paper."My health's deteriorating, but the doctors

Vile rumors and obscene photoshopped images came surging in like a tidal wave. "Mr. Harlan, our PR department's phone lines are blowing up! The stock prices of every company partnered with Harlan Group are plunging. Someone's clearly coordinating this attack behind the scenes."Dad slowly rose to his feet, every word dripping with bloodlust. "The Langstons," he spat out. This was the Langstons' last-ditch effort to pin me to the pillar of shame and plunge my family into eternal damnation with public opinion. I looked into Dad's bloodshot eyes, and the frozen wasteland inside my heart suddenly cracked open under the heat of a raging fire. "Dad," I called out softly. My voice was hoarse as I said, "I'm tired."Dad's tall frame jolted, and the murderous intent in the depths of his eyes was instantly replaced by heartache. He carefully draped his suit jacket over my shoulders, his movements as gentle as though he were handling a priceless treasure. "I'll take you home right now,

Dad looked at me, the remorse and heartache in his eyes so thick that it was almost tangible, threatening to consume him whole. "Hear me out, Abby—"I sneered and cut him off, staring straight at Mom's portrait, my voice laced with shards of ice. "What do you want to tell me? That you loved her so much, only to turn around and crawl into bed with another woman? Tristan, do you honestly think I'll still believe you?" Every word I uttered was like a blade, drawing blood as it viciously sliced into the softest part of his heart. His tall frame suddenly swayed, as though the weight of my words had become too much for him to bear. Then, with a heavy thud, he dropped to his knees onto the cold marble floor before me. "It's not what you think, Abby. That affair five years ago was a setup! I didn't do anything. I've never betrayed your mother!"I shuddered, staring at him in disbelief. His voice was painfully hoarse, every word sounding as though it had been forcibly squeezed out f
