Chapter 3: I Must Get A Divorce

Penulis: Raisaa
Outside, the sound of horse hooves faded away. Inside, Selene stood tall in the center of her room, looking as though she had just nailed her resolve to the very walls of her heart.

From this day forward, her marriage was no longer a prison but a battlefield.

She sank onto the cold surface of the bed. Her lips trembled, her voice barely a sliver of a whisper. "...What did I do wrong?"

For five years, she lived as the Duchess of Leventis. Five years of pouring every ounce of her soul into the role. She had never been idle; she studied, she managed the estate, she prepared, and she served. She ensured every one of her husband’s needs was met—from the food on his table to the administration of his lands. She had done it all for one thing, recognition. And her reward was empty stares and icy words. Most cruelly of all, every life she carried... was snatched away by the hands of her own husband.

Damian hadn't just rejected her as a wife—he had systematically destroyed her chance to be a mother.

Selene gripped the bedsheets until they bunched and wrinkled. Her heart, once soft, now felt as hard as stone. Once, she could deceive herself into thinking love would fix everything. But after death—and her subsequent rebirth—she realized that love was nothing more than a lethal illusion.

All of Damian’s lies lay bare now. And they all led back to one name, Vivian.

Her cousin and stepsister. The woman who had fled before her wedding to Damian, only to return a year ago and reclaim everything right before her eyes.

Selene closed her eyes, her breath hitching. She could still remember it clearly, coming home from her mother’s grave, only to catch Vivian stepping out of Damian’s study, wearing his shirt. And how foolish Selene had been—she had blindly believed the ridiculous excuse that Vivian’s dress was soiled and needed changing.

Now, all the pieces formed a complete, grotesque picture, they weren't just "childhood friends." They were lovers. They were traitors.

The memories carved wound after wound into her soul. Finally, amidst the agony, Selene took a long breath.

"I must get a divorce."

Her hand reached for a drawer, pulling out her mother's inheritance documents. A small plot of land outside the imperial borders, it’s her only way out. She couldn't return to the Count's house as her father had married Vivian’s mother, and ever since, Selene had been nothing but a shadow. Every luxury had fallen into Vivian’s hands, even the fiancé who should have been Selene’s.

She pressed the documents to her chest. ‘I have to leave.’

But her steps stalled when the sound of hooves echoed again from the courtyard. A carriage

had stopped at the front entrance. She knew exactly who had arrived.

The bedroom door swung wide. Damian entered, with his aura of cold authority. And at his side, Vivian.

Selene felt a bitter surge of nausea rise in her throat.

"Selene," that soft, melodic voice sang out. Vivian stepped forward, her face a mask of fake concern. She reached for Selene’s hand, a hollow show of affection. "I heard you miscarried... I hope you’re alright."

Selene yanked her hand back instantly. Her gaze cut like a blade. "I am fine."

For a fleeting second, Vivian’s expression stiffened. She hadn't expected Selene to refuse her cheap drama.

"Selene, don't be like that–"

"You didn't need to come," Selene interrupted coldly. "I don't need your sympathy."

Damian stepped forward, his heavy voice carrying the weight of a command. "Selene. Vivian was kind enough to visit you. Is this how you behave?"

Selene turned, meeting her husband's eyes without a hint of fear. "Then divorce me."

The room froze. Her two loyal maids, Monica and Daisy, bowed their heads even deeper, as if terrified the storm was about to break.

"Selene," Damian’s voice turned sharp, laced with a threat. "Stop this nonsense."

Selene offered a thin, bitter smile. "I've seen enough of you. Please, leave."

"Selene!" Damian’s tone rose. But before he could continue, Vivian quickly interjected with her manufactured sweetness.

"Duke, please don't be angry... It's my fault. I shouldn't have come. Selene’s heart is understandably troubled after she lost the child..."

Selene didn't even look at her. To her, it was all just a low-budget play.

Damian scoffed, then looked at Vivian. "She isn't worth your concern. Let's go."

The door closed, and the room returned to silence.

However, outside in the hallway, Damian’s footsteps halted as Vivian gripped his arm.

"You heard her, didn't you?" she whispered, her eyes shimmering. "She wants a divorce. Isn't this the perfect opportunity for us?"

Damian looked at her, his face remaining unreadable and cold. "She just miscarried. Her words are nothing but delirium."

The hall instantly erupted into a low roar of whispers. Nobles leaned toward one another, some covering their mouths, stunned by Selene's razor-sharp words.Selene stepped forward slowly toward Dorothy and stopped right in front of her. "Do you know," she said quietly but firmly, "that screaming in the presence of a Duchess can be considered an act of treasonous insult?""Duchess."Another voice broke the tension. Count Esmer—a close associate of Robert Moreau—stepped forward with a pacifying expression.Selene shifted her gaze to him."We have not come here to make an enemy of you," Count Esmer said with a diplomatic tone. "But as the mistress of the Duke's castle, you must surely resolve this matter with wisdom."Selene took a long, steady breath. "Have you asked Lady Moreau," she said calmly, "exactly what transpired that led to her injury?"Dorothy interjected quickly, "She came to visit you! Because she knew you were lonely after the Duke left for the battlefield."Selene'

"Explain," Selene said flatly. Her voice was quiet, but it carried enough edge to make the air between them grow taut with tension.Ivan took a long, steadying breath before bowing deeply. "I only found out after you departed, my lady," he answered honestly.Selene stared at him for a long time. Her gaze wasn't one of anger, but of profound exhaustion—as if she were holding back something much deeper than mere disappointment. "I'm sorry... because of me, you were beaten," she whispered.Ivan immediately shook his head, bowing even lower. "It is nothing. It is I who should apologize... for my incompetence in failing to assist you."Selene exhaled softly, her voice dropping an octave. "It doesn't matter. This happened because of our own foolishness." She paused for a moment, then asked without looking at him, "Where is Vivian?""I have already escorted Lady Moreau home," Ivan replied politely.Selene gave a curt nod. "Very well," she said, turning and leaving him where he stood.I

"I am a soldier of His Grace, the Duke," the man replied, revealing the Leventis crest emblazoned on his chest.Selene swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs. She studied him closely—yes, this was the man she had spotted among the trees yesterday while testing the new car. It turned out he belonged to Damian, her own husband."Follow me… quietly," he commanded again, his voice stern. "If you refuse, I will drag you."Selene took a long, shaky breath, trying to steady her nerves. Behind the man, several more figures dressed in similar attire appeared—highly trained soldiers who looked more like assassins than guards, standing ready to monitor her every move."She will not be boarding," the man stated firmly, snatching the identification papers from the stunned official's hand.Selene remained silent, lowering her head. Monica and Daisy stayed by her side, loyal shadows who followed without a word. The attention of everyone on the platform shifted toward her. Whispers

Jay stared at Damian, the weight of the moment settling between them."Report every suspicious thing to me. Nothing is to be overlooked." Damian's voice was heavy but clear—a burden he was handing over to Jay, the only person he could trust implicitly.Jay swallowed hard, realizing this wasn't just a routine security check. Something was deeply wrong, something significant enough to make Duke Damian—a man who usually stood invincible—show a flicker of worry that was rarely seen."Do you hear me?" Damian asked when Jay didn't immediately respond."I hear you, Your Grace. I will depart at once," Jay replied.Damian gave a sharp nod, rose, and retreated into his tent to seek whatever rest he could find. Jay vanished into the night to fulfill his orders.Damian sat on the edge of the bed, warm bear fur covering his body, but the warmth did nothing to calm his heart. His eyes fell on the top on his sword—Selene's handiwork. Instantly, every memory of her invaded his mind, infiltrating

That day, inside the command tent, Damian had arrived long before anyone else. Ever since he had left the castle, his heart had been restless. There was a nagging sensation of something being wrong—something he couldn't quite name. Selene's face haunted his mind. It was a sharp contrast to the irritation her presence usually provoked.Marquess Grant was currently presenting the battlefield situation, but Damian's ears were deaf to the strategy."Do you understand, Duke?" the Marquess's voice shattered his reverie.Damian looked at him with eyes as cold as flint. "It's taking too long."The generals exchanged bewildered glances. "What do you mean?" the Marquess asked cautiously.Damian pointed to the enemy lines on the map. "Attack them first. Do not give them time to breathe."The room fell into a heavy silence. The strategy was logical, but the risk was immense. Everyone knew Damian's way: fast, ruthless, and effective. But this time, his gaze was different—as if his mind were

Vivian's words rang out loud, despite the tears shimmering in her eyes.Selene stepped back toward her, moving slowly. The click of her heels echoed against the marble floor. The servants and Ivan exchanged glances, none of them daring to draw a loud breath. When only a few paces remained between them, Selene leaned down slightly, peering at the pale, seated Vivian. "You are very brave, Lady Vivian… entering this house, breaking the rules, and then daring to speak of the Duke's heart in front of me."Vivian gritted her teeth, trying to resist the intensity in Selene's gaze. "I know him better than you ever will!"Selene smiled, wider this time. "In that case…" she whispered so softly it was almost inaudible, "let us see… who the Duke truly loves."Vivian flinched, her heart racing. Selene turned once more and walked out of the room with an eerie calmness, leaving behind a suffocating atmosphere and a woman now consumed by a mixture of fear and vengeance.Vivian was temporarily mo
