Chapter 3

Author: Bunny Sip
I inhaled deeply and forced myself to stay calm. Then, I smiled gently at Devin and said, "It's fine. You can come over anytime you want next time."

Then, I hesitated briefly before looking at Stacy, asking in a calm voice, "Have you thought about the divorce? What do you say?"

Stacy's expression darkened as she glared at me.

A long while later, she spoke in a loaded tone. "Are you sure you want the divorce?"

I asked her in return. "Are you sure you want Mr. Fisher here to continue standing awkwardly between us instead of giving him a proper title?"

At that, Devin's face paled at once, and the sarcastic grin on Stacy's face also faded away.

I maintained a calm gaze with her, knowing that she would finally agree to the divorce this time.

I already knew how much Devin meant to her. They were childhood best friends after all, and after dating for two years, Devin suddenly ran into some family issues and left to study abroad, completely vanishing from the face of the earth thereafter.

Stacy spent a long time searching for him but to no avail, so she eventually gave up.

After that, I appeared in her life, and things had gone very smoothly between us, from the moment we started dating until we got married.

One day, I discovered that she'd been secretly hiding photos of Devin in her purse. I angrily questioned her about it, but she hit me with a merciless and sarcastic answer back then.

"If it weren't because of the fact that you sort of resembled him, did you really think that I'd even fall in love with you?

"Let me tell you, Allen Gilbert, that if Devin were around, you wouldn't even have the chance to get close and speak with me."

As it turned out, I had only been living in the shadows of her first love. It was such a hilarious yet pathetic reckoning for me.

A short while later, Devin suddenly returned to the city we lived in.

Ever since then, Stacy began treating me worse and colder than before as she began visiting Devin more often instead.

I used to think that I could silently put up with everything for Tammy's sake, pretending that I knew nothing of their little affair because I didn't want Tammy to grow up in a broken family.

However, I eventually realized that I'd been too naive all along.

Tammy never cared about me as her dad at all. She accepted Devin pretty quickly and easily in her life, and she obviously respected him a lot more than she did me.

Devin had a wealthy upbringing after all, and he'd also returned from studying overseas, which was a big plus point in Stacy's eyes as she was very partial toward him. He was also very loving and gentle with Tammy too, never being too strict with her.

On top of that, out of everyone in this family, only Stacy could satisfy Tammy's vanity. So, Tammy naturally aligned herself with whoever Stacy preferred.

I had originally only thought of coming home to pack up my things today. After all, divorce was a huge decision, and I knew that Stacy wouldn't easily agree to my request to protect her public reputation.

However, Devin's presence today just made my job a lot easier.

Stacy went silent for a long while.

I continued triggering her by stressing, "Why are you hesitating? Are you saying that he doesn't deserve to be your husband after all? Or are you trying to say that you actually love me more than you love him?"

Devin lowered his head even more when he heard what I said, looking extremely upset.

When Tammy noticed that, she hurriedly comforted him and said, "Don't be sad, Devin."

She then turned and glared at me.

"Mommy! Just divorce him since he likes suffering on his own that much! You can go ahead and make his wish come true. He's going to regret it later on!"

I couldn't believe that my own daughter would say such things about me.

Stacy remained silent for a while. Finally, she nodded and said, "Fine. I'll agree to the divorce."

She then added resentfully after that, "Don't you dare come back crawling to me, begging for us to get back together when you regret your decision later, Allen Gilbert!"

I shook my head lightly and said determinedly, "That will never happen."

Stacy signed the agreement frustratedly, crumpled up the document, and flung it harshly at me.

When Devin told Stacy his sob story, she immediately felt sorry for him and gave him a job and even gave him a sizable amount of money.I had always known about those payments in the past, but I simply chose to ignore them. After a while, Devin got more ambitious and said that he wanted to rebuild his family empire, so he managed to convince Stacy to invest in his company.Stacy was more than willing to help him out with everything. However, she eventually realized that something was amiss. All of the money she invested in the company seemed to have disappeared, and yet, Devin was still demanding more.Alas, he couldn't keep up his good, fatherly image anymore either, and even though Stacy was a lovestruck fool, she was not stupid. She began having her own suspicions too.She had probably finally woken up and connected all the dots after hearing everything that Ryan told me.A short while later, I heard news about her breaking off ties with Devin. She even brought him to court ov

Ryan continued, "Then, you came into Stacy's life. I know that you love her very much, and also that you endured quite a lot of hardships in your marriage. It's partially my fault too. I just thought of giving you both space instead of regularly checking in on you."But Allen, you're the only person who's most suitable for Stacy. You're family. Don't ruin your own family just because of an outsider."I was shocked to hear the full story.Ryan sounded like he was taking my side and giving me some good advice. However, it was all in Stacy's favor, after all.He should have told her everything a long time ago."Ryan, it would have been more helpful if only you'd told Stacy about this sooner.""I had been meaning to tell her, but now that things had turned out like this, I know that she's not the one calling the shots anymore. You're the one who's already made up his mind to leave her, aren't you?"I remained silent.Ryan had known all along that I had been suffering in this marria

Tammy's face turned even more pale as she stared at me, unable to say another word.I thought that she would storm out of the door after arguing with me like this. However, to my surprise, she still stuck around for the rest of dinner. The meatloaf Dad made still tasted the same as the last time. But now, Tammy ate every last crumb of it and even purposely showed me her empty plate afterward. However, nothing she did now was going to stir up my emotions again. After dinner, Mom and Dad lit up the candles on her birthday cake and began singing her the birthday song.I purposely ignored the hopeful look she threw in my direction and remained seated on the couch as I dealt with work email on my phone.Tammy looked away disappointedly and made a hurried wish before slicing up a piece of cake and bringing it over to me.I didn't even lift my head."Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not eating it."She insisted on giving it to me. "But this is my birthday cake!"I finally looked up and sp

"Thank you, Dad!" Daryl exclaimed. It was just a simple offer to bring him to the science center. In the past, I used to bring Tammy to many places, such as the science center, the museum, the zoo, and others, and yet, she never once thanked me for it.On the contrary, she often complained about how tired she was and how boring the experiences were for her.As expected, I really shouldn't have compared Daryl to Tammy.I had actually been reflecting on myself over the past few days, wondering if I had failed to properly teach my daughter how to behave. In the end, I concluded that I had simply spoiled her too much with my love.I kept thinking about her and being considerate about her, taking everything about her as seriously as I could and loving her more than anything else in the world. In the end, my love for her was used against me like a double-edged sword instead.…After the divorce, I began focusing on regrowing my career once more, planning to found a company.I slowly

I ended up calling the school again and spoke to Tammy and Daryl's homeroom teacher, Lily Morton, to find out what had happened.I rushed over to the school in the afternoon and went into the teacher's office. Lily naturally assumed that I was there for Tammy. After all, I was the one who usually settled her affairs and also attended the parent-teacher meetings on Tammy's behalf in the past.Meanwhile, I had only spoken to Lily on the phone regarding Daryl's transfer to the school without ever making a physical appearance. Both Daryl and Tammy were called into the office. There were scratches and claw marks on each other's faces and arms. It certainly looked like they'd been in a horrible fight. When they saw me, they both called me "Dad" and "Daddy" at the same time.It was just that Daryl's voice was a lot softer than Tammy's, which completely overpowered him. I could only see his lips moving. An instant later, he quickly drew his lips into a thin line and hung his head, lookin

The more I learned about the boy, the more I realized that I liked him and felt pity for him.He told me that his name was Daryl Hatfield. He was smart for his age, but he was humble about it. He was also well aware of his situation, and he was very grateful for every bit of kindness shown to him.I asked, "Don't you think that it feels like other people are just making you a charity cause because they pitied your plight? Doesn't it hurt your pride at all?"Daryl widened his eyes and answered in bewilderment."Why would I ever think that? That's just the kindness that the people are showing me, and I should feel warmed and touched by it. Why would I even get hurt?"However, I knew that Tammy would think that if it were up to her.Daryl had excellent grades. He longed to change his destiny through knowledge, wanting to go out and see the rest of the world for himself. He used to grow up in a loving family when his parents were still around.
