That evening, in the front courtyard of the Rupert estate, a car came to a smooth stop.

Liam opened the door and stepped out, the cool night air brushing away the lingering glitter of the banquet.

Only a faint trace of alcohol remained, clinging lightly to his collar and cuffs.

Inside the living room, only a single warm wall lamp was left on. Cecilia was curled up on the sofa, a hardcover book resting open on her knees, her fingers paused on one page.

Hearing the familiar footsteps, she lifted her head and watched him walk into the pool of light.

"The banquet's over?" she asked softly.

"Mm." Liam loosened his tie with one hand, the silk sliding between his fingers.

He walked over to her, bent down, and pressed a gentle kiss--cool with night air, faintly scented with wine--against her smooth forehead.

"I had a bit to drink. I probably smell like alcohol. I'll go take a shower."

Cecilia took the suit jacket he handed her, her fingertips brushing the cool lining.

"I told you not to drink

Outside the side entrance of the police station, Murphy's car screeched to a sudden stop. The tires hissed sharply against the pavement, the front of the car halting less than half a meter from the steps.Only when he saw Cecilia emerge from the doorway did the tension in his shoulders ease--just barely noticeable. His hands remained clenched around the steering wheel, knuckles white."I was halfway there when Prescott called," Murphy said as he pushed the door open and stepped out. His voice was lower than usual. "He said you were here."Cecilia pulled her coat tighter around herself. "Sorry. I left in a hurry and forgot to tell you.""It's fine." He opened the rear door for her. "Get in first."The car still carried the faint static hum of a police radio. As Cecilia bent to sit in the back seat, the tip of her shoe bumped into something hard. She picked it up casually--a silver badge, its edges engraved with an intricate vine pattern.Murphy caught sight of it in the rearview mirror

The bed in the temporary holding cell was uncomfortably hard.Liam leaned against the headboard, the open book in his hands frozen on Chapter Three. He hadn't turned a page in over half an hour. The lock clicked. Then he saw Cecilia standing in the doorway, her eyes red-rimmed, her handbag clenched tightly in her hand."How did you--"Before he could finish, she threw herself into his arms with such force that it knocked the breath from his chest. The faint scent of her shampoo mixed with the salt of her tears, wrapping around him instantly.Liam caught her instinctively, his palm rubbing her thin back again and again, while his gaze shot sharply toward the door--where Prescott was withdrawing his head from the crack and quietly shutting it.After the soft sound of the lock engaging, the room was left with nothing but her restrained sobbing."Hey... it's okay..." Liam lifted her face, wiping away the tears that kept spilling over with his thumbs. His voice was gentler than he realized

Dawn had just begun to break. A seam split the leaden clouds, spilling thin morning light into the room.Cecilia leaned against the headboard, the cold glow of her phone screen highlighting the faint shadows beneath her eyes. When the unlisted number popped up for the third time, she finally swiped to answer--without speaking.Steady breathing came through the receiver, followed by a low male voice."Apologies for calling at this hour, ma'am."She remained silent. As if he had expected that, the caller continued, "I'm Murray, aide-de-camp to Officer Todd. There's something that must be delivered to Mr. Liam Sinclair personally."Cecilia padded barefoot to the window, her fingertips tracing the condensation fogging the glass.Across the street, a black sedan was parked. Its tinted windows revealed nothing."The item can be sent directly to the police station," she said carefully."I'm afraid that won't be possible." Murray's tone remained respectful, but carried an unyielding firmness.

Behind the darkest patch of shrubs, a hand in a tactical glove suddenly clamped over Rebecca's mouth. She didn't even have time to scream before she was dragged bodily into the dead angle deep within the bushes."Mmm--!"Barefoot, she kicked wildly at the dirt, her elbow slamming backward with all her strength, but it struck only a solid bulletproof vest. The man lifted her clean off the ground and moved quickly through a gap in the laurel hedge. As the metal door of the storage shed opened and shut, the moonlight was sliced into a thin line--then vanished completely."Let go--!" The moment she could speak again, Rebecca staggered backward hoarsely, her nails digging into the cracks of the wooden door."Ma'am." The man stepped back into a patch of moonlight and raised both hands. "I was sent by Bruno."Rebecca's ragged breathing stopped short. She curled up in the shadows by the door, her pupils trembling faintly in the darkness. The man pulled a sealed pouch from his inner pocket and

Time seemed to freeze at that very moment. All the color drained from Rebecca's face, leaving it ashen and lifeless. Her mouth hung open, but no sound came out. She could only stare at Harriet, as if she were seeing her for the first time."He's been investigating for years," Harriet continued, her tone calm, as though she were talking about someone else's story. "I think he figured out the truth a long time ago. That's why he chose this moment to come back and deliberately get close to you.""No... that's impossible..." Rebecca finally found her voice, but it was weak, almost a whimper. She suddenly clutched her head with both hands, fingers digging deep into her hair as her body curled in on itself in agony. "You made all of this up! You're just trying to make me hate him! Stop talking! I don't want to hear it!""Rebecca, stop lying to yourself!" Harriet's voice suddenly turned sharp. She grabbed her daughter's wrist, forcing her hands down and making her look straight into her own

Cecilia froze. A name flashed through her mind almost instantly.Hesitantly--almost soundlessly, shaping the word with her lips--she said, "Harriet...?""Even you can see it," Murphy replied, his brow tightening almost imperceptibly. "So the person directly involved understands it even better. Right now, though, she needs time--and she needs proof."He stepped back in front of Cecilia and continued his analysis, his tone grave."Liam's situation is simple in one sense, and extremely difficult in another. Simple because the core issue is proving that the crucial surveillance footage was fabricated. Difficult because...whoever did this is highly skilled. They stitched together footage from different times, different locations--possibly even involving different people--aligning the timeline, lighting, and vehicle movement so seamlessly that it looks completely real. Finding a flaw will take time, and it will take serious technical expertise."Cecilia lowered her head, her hands clenched
