Cecilia covered her mouth with a faint laugh. "Forget it--let me call Robin to pick you up."

"No need."

Vicky turned and walked back to the sidewalk, dropping onto a bench with clear frustration.

Her black stockings, already torn from the chase, split even further as she sat. The once-elegant look now seemed utterly disheveled.

"You're not actually planning to sit here and wait for them to bring your bag back, are you?" Cecilia asked.

Vicky didn't answer. She simply closed her eyes, trying to steady her breathing.

"Well, women usually keep...private things in their bags," Cecilia continued thoughtfully. "Aren't you worried about any secrets getting out?"

Vicky's eyes flew open. She jumped to her feet.

Cecilia fell silent--so there was something important inside the bag.

"Give me your phone." Vicky held out her hand, her voice tight.

Cecilia handed it over, her tone mildly teasing. "Now I'm really curious what you're hiding."

Vicky's expression darkened. She ignored the comment and dia

The northern slums of the city. The stench of rot hung heavy in the air, thick enough to choke even in broad daylight.Rats darted along the edges of stagnant puddles, grotesquely large.A few scrawny children crouched beside heaps of trash, rummaging for anything barely fit to eat.It was a place the city had forgotten.Years ago, there had been talk of redevelopment, but nothing ever came of it.Rumors said the area had become a dumping ground for those who were "untouchable by the law." Over time, it turned into an isolated island no one dared approach.Even more chilling was the geography--murky water encircled the entire district, with only a single narrow bridge connecting it to the outside world. Here, the saying "you go in, but you don't come out" wasn't metaphorical. In the shadow of a wall, Gia curled in on herself. She had been there for a full day and night. Time had lost all meaning, replaced by endless cold and fear.Whenever her consciousness drifted, she clung to the s

"The ceremonial salute back then--I warned you in advance,"Albert said coldly."You were the one who insisted on bringing that woman to your promotion ceremony, claiming she was a socialite who could help you work the room. You brought it on yourself.""I did that for the sake of the family!" Ferdinand shot to his feet. "If I hadn't, how was I supposed to keep things stable?""Fine. Let's say you both shared the blame in that matter." Albert strode to the coffee table and slammed his palm down, making the teacups jump. "Then what about Liam? What right did you have to lay a hand on him?""Liam bullied Rebecca first!""I don't care about any Rebecca!" Albert's voice rose sharply, his gaze cutting. "I only recognize the three children my daughter left behind. Discipline whoever you want, lock up whoever you like--I don't care. But my daughter's children? No one touches a single hair on their heads."Ferdinand raked a hand through his hair in frustration."Fine. I couldn't touch him. Bu

The bitter smile on Todd's face deepened. He nodded, his voice so low it was almost inaudible."You're right. That far away...even if they could bring me back, it probably wouldn't be..."He reached into his cigarette pack again.Liam snatched the cigarette from his fingers and stuck it between his own teeth, staring at him, his voice hoarse. "If you dare not come back alive, then don't show up in my dreams either.""How could that work?" Todd looked at the cigarette between Liam's lips and tugged at the corner of his mouth. "If I can't see you in real life, you're saying I'm not even allowed to see you in my dreams?"Liam lifted his gaze. Their eyes met.Suddenly, Todd stepped forward and pulled Liam into a tight embrace, his arms locking firmly around him. His voice was muffled against Liam's shoulder."I waited for you for twenty years...Liam. You know that, right?""I know." Liam raised his hand and patted Todd's back twice, hard. His voice was calm and low. "Back when you first l

Inside the hospital room.Cecilia was completely absorbed in the handwritten manuscript when she heard the door open.Instinctively, she hid the book behind her back before looking up.Todd saw the way she moved, like she was guarding treasure, and the corner of his mouth twitched."Seriously? You think I'm going to steal it?""How did you get in?" Liam asked, closing the door and cutting off the faint sounds of the two elderly men arguing outside.Todd ran a hand through his hair, fatigue from travel still clinging to his face."The moment my mission wrapped up, I heard what happened to you. I rushed back as fast as I could."Liam walked to the coffee table, poured a glass of water, and handed it to him. "When did you arrive?""This morning." Todd took the glass and drank it in one go, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Changed clothes and came straight here."Liam noticed the stubble on his chin and handed him a clean towel. "Didn't even have time to wash your face?"Todd wiped his face rou

Outside the hospital room, four bodyguards in black suits and dark sunglasses stood on either side of the door, motionless, like silent statues. From inside, Hugh's hearty laughter could be faintly heard. The bodyguards exchanged brief glances, hesitation flickering in their eyes.As Hugh's entourage, should they step in to ask if he needed anything? But knowing Hugh's deep dislike of interruptions, they ultimately decided to hold their positions and remain outside.Just then, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.Lynn strode over. The moment he saw the scene at the door, his brow furrowed. He sized up the four burly, expressionless men in black."Who are you? What are you doing here?"The four men stared straight ahead, offering no response.Lynn raised his voice. "I'm Mr. Liam's assistant. I need to go in now. Step aside, please."The bodyguards didn't budge. One of them finally spoke, his tone flat and mechanical."Our boss is in a private meeting. No one is allowed to enter

Hugh watched the way she hovered over the book, clearly wanting to touch it but not daring to.He chuckled. "If you like it, go ahead and take a look. Don't worry about it."Cecilia's eyes lit up. Only after receiving permission did she carefully lift the book with both hands and hold it in front of her.She examined the cover and the binding first, then gently turned to the inner pages."You know your way around this?" Hugh asked, a little surprised."My mother loved medieval manuscripts when she was alive," Cecilia explained softly, though her gaze was already completely absorbed by the pages. "I picked up a little just from being around her."As she continued reading, her focus deepened. When she turned the pages, her fingers trembled slightly with excitement.Seeing her reaction, Hugh leaned forward unconsciously. His tone carried both curiosity and expectation. "So--what do you see?"Cecilia nodded repeatedly, her words coming faster than before."This really is the handwriting o
