Chapter 5

Author: Miss Sunny
Ava's POV

The rumors were delicious.

For the past week, the entire Bloodmoon Pack had been whispering about one thing: The Night at the Black Wolf.

"Did you hear? The Beta daughter bought the bar." "I saw Alpha Cole dripping in champagne. He looked like a drowned rat." "Where did she get the money?"

I walked through the Pack House corridors, my heels clicking on the marble. Warriors who used to ignore me now stepped aside, eyeing me with a mix of fear and confusion. I wasn't the "help" anymore. I was the crazy ex with a bottomless bank account.

I pushed open the door to the Alpha's Office.

"Why are you still here?"

Lexi was sitting at my desk, trying to figure out the filing system. She looked exhausted. Apparently, being the "future Luna" was harder than just looking pretty.

"Because of Article 4, Section 2 of the Pack Code," I said breezily, dropping my bag. " 'An un-rejected mate must remain within territory limits until the Alpha Succession is finalized.' "

I leaned against the doorframe, smirking. "Believe me, Lexi. If I could leave without being hunted down as a Traitor, I'd be in Paris right now. But I have seven days left. So, I'm here to... finish my paperwork."

"Finish?" Lexi scoffed, gesturing to the piles of chaotic documents. "You haven't done a thing all week! The supply routes are a mess. The vendors are calling me!"

"And what did you tell them?"

"I told them I'm the new Luna!"

"And?"

"And they hung up on me!" She threw a stapler at the wall. "Fix it, Ava! Cole is furious. The pack is running out of meat."

I laughed. It was a cold, sharp sound.

"You wanted the title, Lexi. You get the job."

I walked over to the main server-the digital brain of the pack.

"What are you doing?" Lexi narrowed her eyes.

"Just... cleaning up."

I typed in my admin password. [DELETE ALL CONTACTS?] [YES.]

[WIPE PATROL SCHEDULES?] [YES.]

[ERASE FINANCIAL RECORDS?] [YES.]

"You know," I said conversationally, watching the progress bar load. "Cole has been avoiding me since the bar. Is he still trying to wash the champagne smell out of his ego?"

Lexi stood up, her face flushing red. She marched over, getting in my face.

"He's not avoiding you! He's busy! He's preparing for our mating ceremony!"

She yanked down the collar of her pink cashmere sweater. There, on her neck, was a fresh, angry purple bruise. A hickey.

"See?" She preened, desperate to hurt me. "We were up all night. He said he needed to reclaim his pride after your little stunt. He promised that the second he becomes Alpha... he's marking me right here."

My eyes flicked to the mark. A week ago, it would have killed me. Now? It looked like a desperate branding on a piece of cattle.

"Congratulations," I deadpanned. "I hope he's better in bed than he is at managing a budget. Because honestly? The bar is low."

Ding. [DELETION COMPLETE.]

I pulled my flash drive out of the server. The pack's logistics were now officially a ghost town. Good luck running a territory when you don't know who supplies your food or where your borders are.

"I'm done here," I said, zipping up my jacket. "I have one last perimeter check to log before my shift ends. Then, I'm officially off the clock. Forever."

"You're going on patrol?" Lexi looked suspicious. "Why?"

"To make sure the sensors are... calibrated," I lied smoothly. (I had actually turned them off yesterday).

"I'm coming with you," Lexi announced, grabbing her coat.

I paused. "Excuse me?"

"Cole said I need to show 'Luna leadership.' If you're going to the border, I'm going too. I need to make sure you aren't stealing pack secrets."

I looked at her. Really looked at her. She was wearing heels. In the forest.

"Suit yourself," I smiled, a predator sensing prey. "But try to keep up, Princess. The woods are dangerous at night."

The forest was suffocating. The sun was setting, casting long, bloody shadows across the tree line.

I walked fast, enjoying the way Lexi huffed and puffed behind me.

"Slow down!" she whined, tripping over a root. "My feet hurt! Ava!"

"This is the job, Lexi," I called back without stopping. "Luna isn't just a title. It's work."

"I hate this," she muttered. "I hate you."

My wolf, Nyx, suddenly spiked in my mind. Her hackles raised. [Ava. Stop. Something is wrong.]

I froze. The birds had stopped singing. The air tasted metallic. Like copper. Like rot.

Rogues.

I reached for my radio to call it in-habit, really. But then I remembered the deleted files. The disabled sensors. No one was coming.

Except...

Crack.

A twig snapped.

I turned slowly.

Three pairs of glowing yellow eyes emerged from the darkness.

Lexi walked right into my back. "Why did you stop? I swear to the moon goddess, Ava, I'm telling Cole you-"

She looked up. She saw the eyes.

Her scream shattered the silence.

Ava's POVThe drive back to the Bloodmoon Pack was silent. Cole drove, his knuckles white on the steering wheel, glancing at me every thirty seconds as if checking to make sure I hadn't evaporated.I stared out the window, texting Kaelen.[Kaelen: I'm burning the border patrol schedule. If he touches you, I'm invading.] [Me: Down, boy. He's not a threat. He's a ghost.]We arrived at the Pack House. It looked smaller than I remembered. Grayer."I moved Lexi's things out," Cole said eagerly as he opened the front door. "I burned the sheets. I bought new furniture. The Alpha Suite... it's yours again."I stepped inside. The air still smelled faintly of Lexi's cloying rose perfume, masked by the chemical sting of cleaning supplies."I'm not sleeping in the Alpha Suite," I said calmly. "I'll take the guest room down the hall."Cole's face fell. "But... you're my Luna. You belong with me.""I am a hostage, Cole," I corrected, walking past him. "Hostages don't share beds with their captors. W

Cole's POVI sat in my office-the one Ava used to organize, now a chaotic mess-reading the file Chase had just slapped onto my desk.[Subject: Ava Ashford // Treatment Log]Financials: 90% of her mother's inheritance was funneled into Gordon's accounts. Ava was given a monthly allowance of $50.Living Conditions: Moved to the servant's quarters in 2023 to make room for Lexi's "walk-in closet."Work Log: Managed Pack Logistics, Payroll, and Event Planning. Unpaid. 60 hours/week.I threw the file across the room. It hit the wall and scattered, papers fluttering down like white feathers."I didn't know," I whispered."You didn't want to know," Chase said from the doorway. He didn't look like my Beta anymore. He looked like a man judging a fool."Where is she?" I asked, my voice ragged."The Royal Palace," Chase said. "The Coronation Ceremony is tomorrow. She is being crowned Luna Queen."Tomorrow.I stood up. "Get the car.""Cole, don't," Chase warned. "She belongs to the King now.""She

Cole's POVThe evidence was screaming at me from the holographic screen. Lexi's hand on the IV line. Her intent to murder.I dragged her into the Pack Office, throwing her onto the leather sofa."Jasper, baby, please!" Lexi sobbed, mascara running down her face like black tears. "It's a misunderstanding! The camera angles are tricky! Ava edited it!""Don't lie to me!" I roared, the sound vibrating off the walls. "I saw you! You tried to kill my father to protect my position? Or to protect your own?""I did it for us!" She crawled toward me, grabbing my leg. "The Elders were going to vote you out! I just wanted you to be Alpha so we could be happy!""Happy?" I kicked her hand away. "You think murder makes me happy?"Lexi's face crumpled. She realized the "innocent victim" act wasn't working. Her eyes darted around the room, landing on the scented candles on the side table-our "romantic" candles. She stood up, wiping her face, trying to switch tactics to seduction. She grabbed a lighter.

Cole's POVMy world stopped.I stared at the scene before me.Lexi-my "savior," my "love"-was standing over my dying father's bed, her hand gripping his life support line.Ava was standing in the doorway, her phone raised, recording everything."What are you doing?" I whispered, my voice trembling.Lexi snatched her hand back like she'd been burned. "I... I was just checking the line! It looked loose! I was fixing it!""Liar," Ava said. Her voice was calm. Brutal. "I set a trap, Cole. I knew someone would try to finish the job once I stabilized him. So we circled back."She played the video on her phone. On the screen, Lexi crept into the room. She looked around guiltily. She muttered, "If he recovers, I'm finished." And then she reached for the IV.It was undeniable."You..." I looked at Lexi, nausea rising in my throat. "You tried to kill him?""No! Jasper, please!" Lexi threw herself at my feet, sobbing. "I did it for us! He was in the way! The Elders were going to vote you out beca

Ava's POVThe Pack House smelled of stale air and sickness. We walked through the corridors I knew by heart, but everything felt different. The portraits on the walls were crooked. Dust bunnies danced in the corners.Cole led us to the Alpha's Suite.Inside, Alpha Vance lay on the massive bed. He looked like a skeleton wrapped in skin. His breathing was shallow, a death rattle in his chest."He's been like this for three days," Cole said, his voice losing its edge, sounding scared. "Our healers say his organs are shutting down. They don't know why."I stepped up to the bed, snapping on a pair of latex gloves."Clear the room," I ordered."What?" Lexi squeaked. "No! I'm not leaving him alone with you! You might kill him!"I turned to her. "Lexi, get out. Or I'll have Security remove you."Kaelen took a step toward her. Lexi yelped and scrambled into the hallway."I'm staying," Cole said stubbornly."Fine," I said. "But stay quiet."I placed my hands on Vance's chest.[Nyx. Scan.]My wol

Ava's POVThe silence in the car was heavy, but not uncomfortable. It was the silence of a calm before a storm.I stared out the tinted window as the familiar, depressing tree line of Bloodmoon territory blurred past.My stomach twisted. Not with fear, but with a cold, simmering rage.I had given this pack everything. My sweat, my tears, my wolf's dormancy. And they had repaid me with humiliation."You're clenching your jaw," Kaelen's voice cut through my thoughts.I looked over. He was driving with effortless grace, his eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses, but I could feel his gaze on me."I'm just... preparing," I said."For what?""For the lies. The gaslighting. The way Cole looks at me like I'm a broken toy he threw away."Kaelen reached over, his large hand covering mine on the center console. His skin was warm, grounding."Let him look," Kaelen said, his voice low and dangerous. "Because today, he won't see the girl he broke. He will see the Queen he lost."He squeezed my hand. "A
