[Elena's POV]

The black SUV was completely silent.

I sat in the backseat, staring out the window at the passing city.

My dad was dead. My mom and my best friend were being held hostage by my brother. And sitting in my coat pocket was a cheap burner phone, a heavy reminder of the betrayal I was supposed to commit.

My head pounded. Everything felt like a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.

"I reported it to the Boss."

Caleb's voice broke the silence. He kept his eyes on the road, his hands gripped

Noah stepped behind me again. He unclasped the necklace and draped it around my neck. The heavy, freezing cold diamonds rested perfectly against my collarbone. He locked the clasp at the back of my neck.I looked in the mirror. With the deep green silk and the heavy diamonds, I looked like a queen. But feeling the cold weight of the jewels around my throat, I knew exactly what it really was.It was a beautiful, incredibly expensive collar."Perfect," Noah said. He stepped back and pulled the heavy velvet curtain open. The bright lights of the store hit my eyes. The saleswomen instantly stopped talking and turned to look at us. They gasped slightly, staring at the dress and the diamonds. Caleb just nodded once.Nobody had any idea what had just happened two feet away from them.Ten minutes later, we walked out of the boutique. The cool night air of the city hit my hot cheeks. We got into the back seat of Noah's armored black SUV

[Elena's POV]I looked at our reflection in the tall mirror.Noah stood right behind me, completely dressed in his dark suit. I was wearing nothing but a thin layer of emerald green silk.My entire back was bare.Just a few feet away, on the other side of the dark red curtain, I could hear the faint, polite voices of the saleswomen.I could hear Caleb shifting his weight, his heavy boots squeaking slightly on the polished floor. They were right there. My heart hammered against my ribs so hard I thought everyone in the store could hear it."Noah," I breathed, my voice barely a whisper. "They are right outside.""I know," Noah murmured. He didn't pull the tiny metal zipper up. Instead, he let go of it completely. His large, warm hands settled on my bare waist. His rough thumbs slowly stroked the sensitive skin just above the silk fabric.A violent shiver ran down my spine. The store's

[Jake's POV]I stared at the thick, heavy paper on my desk. The gold foil letters caught the light. You are invited to the engagement party of Jake Marlowe and Caroline Vance. It was perfect. Jessica was completely right.Grandpa Marcowas furious with me lately. He thought I was a weak, useless cripple being kidnapped bytherival gang. I needed to fix my image fast.Announcing a massive, luxury engagement party with a decentgirl like Caroline right before our college graduation was the smartest move I could make. But impressing Marcowas only half the plan.I picked up the top invitation. I had specifically told the delivery guy to hand this one directly to Caleb at Uncle Noah's villa.I wanted Elena to see it. I wanted her to hold this expensive paper and realize exactly what she threw away. She could have been a Marlowe. She could h

[Noah's POV]"No."The word barely made it out of her mouth. Her bottom lip trembled so hard her teeth clicked together.Tears pooled in her wide blue eyes. They spilled over, leaving wet, shiny tracks down her pale face. She looked completely broken. Losing her father this morning gave her the absolute perfect cover. Her grief was real.I leaned closer, my chest almost touching hers. I stared deep into those wet blue eyes. I looked for a lie. I looked for the panic of a rat caught in a trap.I found nothing. Just sadness and the rapid, uneven rise and fall of her chest under her thin nightgown. The heavy, dark urge to snap her neck slowly drained out of my blood. I raised my hand in the quiet room. My rough thumb caught a hot tear right before it reached her chin. I wiped it away, pressing my calloused skin gently against her soft cheek."I will trust you for now," I whispered.Hours later, the bedroom was pitch black. Elena was curled up on her side, breathing in a slow, steady rhyt

[Elena's POV]Jake stared at his uncle, completely frozen. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He was arrogant when he was alone with me, but in front of Noah, he was nothing but a scared kid."I asked you a question, Jake," Noah said. His voice was calm, but the heavy threat behind it made the air in the hallway feel freezing cold."No," Jake finally managed to choke out.He gripped the joystick of his wheelchair so hard his knuckles turned white. But his bruised ego couldn't just let it go. He looked up at Noah and muttered, "But Uncle Noah, she is my girlfriend.""Was," I corrected instantly, stepping closer to Noah's side. "I was your girlfriend. Now we are nothing."Noah didn't even blink. He pulled me tighter against his bare, warm chest."She is my property now," Noah stated flatly. He looked down at Jake like he was looking at a bug on the floor."And you are annoying her. Pack your bags tonight. Caleb will drive you back to your own house tomorrow morning. I don't wan

[Elena's POV]My blood turned to ice.Jake was sitting in his wheelchair right outside the study doors. The hallway was dark, but I could clearly see the suspicion in his eyes."What are you doing in Uncle Noah's office?" Jake demanded. His voice was a harsh whisper. He looked me up and down, noting my bare feet and thin nightgown. My mind raced. I couldn't tell him the truth. I couldn't let him look in my pockets.I forced myself to take a deep breath. I reached into the pocket of my nightgown, right next to the burner phone, and pulled out a blue silk hair tie.I held it up so he could see it in the dim light."I was looking for this," I said smoothly, keeping my voice low. "I left it in here earlier today. I couldn't sleep without my hair tied up."Jake scoffed. He looked at the hair tie, then back at the heavy wooden doors."Bullshit," he sneered. "You don't just wander into my uncle's office in the middle of the night for a hair tie. I'm waking up the guards. They need to check t
