Chapter 2

Autor: Yvie Dumpling
The light in Josie’s eyes slowly faded. Just as she shut them in despair, a strong, burning-hot hand suddenly grabbed her wrist. The world spun, and the next thing she knew, she was pulled against a broad, solid chest.

“Hold on to me!”

A man hoisted her up around the waist. It wasn’t gentle, almost like scooping up a stray cat off the ground. A second later, something exploded nearby. His hand came up immediately, pressing her head against his chest to protect her.

The pungent stench of burning explosives assaulted her senses as a blistering heat wave swept past from behind.

Yet beneath it all was a cold, sharp scent.

It felt strange and yet familiar at the same time.

The smoke stung her eyes. Josie squinted, trying to see the man who had pulled her from the flames.

Through the firefighter’s mask, she could make out only a pair of dark, bottomless eyes.

A moment later, from the corner of her vision, she saw Zac carrying Suzy out of the burning building, standing on relatively safe open ground.

He held Suzy tightly against him, like something precious he had almost lost forever. The fear and desperation in his eyes were emotions Josie had never seen directed at her.

She slowly shut her eyes.

A single tear slid silently down her cheek.

She could feel it with certainty now.

Zac was back too.

Only this time, he chose Suzy.

In their past life, Zac had saved her, and Suzy had died in the fire. He had carried Suzy’s photo with him for seven years, mourning her day and night. He had even refused to let another woman bear his child.

And now, he had finally saved the woman he loved, fixing the regret that had haunted him for years.

He must be happy.

Josie let out a bitter smile.

Fine.

If fate had brought them both back, perhaps it was to give them a chance to finally sever this doomed tie.

It was time for her to let go.

She had inhaled too much smoke, and the emotional shock had taken its toll. Darkness swept over her, and she collapsed.

Just before she fully lost consciousness, she thought she heard Zac’s voice calling out from somewhere nearby, urgent and frantic.

“Where is she? Where’s Josie?”

She let out a soft, inward laugh.

She had to be mistaken.

Right now, his mind would be filled only with Suzy.

And her? She was nobody to him.

*

When she woke again, it was already early morning.

Josie slowly opened her eyes and saw her mother, Susan Spencer, leaning over her with worry written all over her face.

“Josie, you’re awake? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?”

Josie’s eyes immediately reddened. She sat up abruptly and threw herself into Susan’s arms, holding her tightly.

“Mom… I missed you so much.”

In this lifetime, Susan was alive. What a blessing.

In her previous life, less than half a year after she married Zac, her parents’ private plane crashed into the mountains during a business trip. Their bodies were never recovered.

For years after that, aside from Zac’s seemingly affectionate but ultimately hollow love, she had never felt an ounce of warmth.

Everyone stared at her abdomen, whispering about why she still had no child.

No matter what pain her body endured or how much sorrow she carried, she could only swallow it silently. She had no one to confide in.

She had woken from countless nightmares in tears, wishing Susan could hug her just once more and tell her everything would be alright.

It felt like life had finally shown her mercy and given her another chance. This time, she would not let history repeat itself.

Susan gently patted her back, her voice trembling with the lingering fear of almost losing Josie.

“Were you scared last night? Thank goodness Zac reacted quickly. He rushed in and saved you right away. I could barely breathe thinking about what might have happened.

“My baby girl is about to get married. If something had happened to you, what would I do?”

Josie’s brow furrowed.

Zac had saved Suzy last night.

How did she become the one he “rescued”? Why was he taking credit for it?

But she did not have time to correct that now. She tightened her hold on Susan’s hand, her voice firm and steady.

“Mom, I’m not marrying Zac.”

The event organizer hurried over with an apologetic smile and quickly pulled Josie aside.“Mr. Jenkins, I am so sorry. This lady didn’t do it on purpose. Please don’t take it to heart.”Mr. Jenkins? The second son of the Jenkins family?Josie felt her mind go blank. So the man she had just fallen into was the legendary, rarely-seen heir of Jenkins Corporation, Liam Jenkins?Same last name as Hugo.A face that looked uncannily like his.For one wild second, a ridiculous thought flashed through her mind. Was this one of those dramatic plots you only see in novels? One brother raised as the heir while the other was left to fend for himself somewhere out in the world? She stood there frozen. By the time she snapped out of it, the man had already walked past her without a single glance.Caleb rushed over, still pale. “Miss Lindsay, are you alright? You scared me. That was Mr. Jenkins. Did you get hurt?”Josie shook her head, still dazed. “I’m fine.”She quickly pulled herself t

In her past life, she had only ever heard rumors about the Jenkins family’s mysterious second son. People said he was ruthless, sharp-eyed, and chose his business partners purely based on mood. She had never seen him in person. She lifted her chin, trying to get a better look at the man everyone was whispering about. Before she could focus, her wrist was suddenly yanked.A strong, unquestionable force pulled her out of the crowd.Josie spun around and met a pair of furious eyes.Zac.He didn’t give her a chance to react. He dragged her into an empty lounge, pinned her against the wall, and stared down at her with a dark, suffocating intensity.“Josie, do you even take me seriously? You know perfectly well that Lucas Corporation and Jenkins Corporation are sworn rivals, yet you still want to work with Horizon Home under the Jenkins Corporation. Are you doing this on purpose?”“Zac, let go of me.”Josie frowned in disgust and shoved him, but he didn’t budge. She gave him a col

Suzy looked at her with wounded eyes.“Josie, are you still mad at me? Is it because I took your position at Galaxy? I swear I never wanted that. I really want us to go back to how we used to be.”Josie stared at her, momentarily thrown off by how sad and innocent Suzy looked. How had she missed the fact that Suzy was this good at playing innocent?Wendy had warned her more than once. She had said Suzy had a manipulative streak and that Josie should be careful. And what had Josie said back then?“Suzy isn’t like that. She just grew up overseas and has a more open, direct personality.”Looking back now, she realized she had given Suzy a “friend’s daughter” filter because their mothers were close. She had tried to take care of her out of loyalty. She never imagined Suzy’s ambition would be this big.Big enough to steal her fiancé.Big enough to steal her job.Josie suddenly laughed.“Suzy, how shameless do you have to be to say something that shameless?”Suzy froze. Josie’s heart gave a hard thump. Hugo’s face was so close she could see every sharp line of it, and those deep, unreadable eyes looked as if they could see right through her.So she lifted her chin and gave him a soft, sweet smile, her dimples faint but clear.“I want you to accompany me to an event tomorrow evening. Would that be alright?”Hugo frowned. “I have something to do tomorrow evening.”Josie’s smile froze. Her mind flashed back. She had turned him down just as bluntly before. So this man really was the type to hold a grudge.A mix of frustration and helplessness bubbled up in her chest.“Fine then. Sorry for bothering you.”She pointed at the food container on the cabinet. “Make sure you eat it while it’s still warm.”The door closed with a soft thud.Hugo picked up the insulated container. It was pink and cute. His expression darkened slightly as if something weighed on his mind.*The next evening, outside the entrance of the business gala.Josie had just h

Hugo was still shirtless, his toned upper body bare, with only a pair of dark gray athletic shorts hanging from his hips. Sweat beaded on his skin and rolled down across his firm chest and abs, disappearing into that maddeningly defined V-line.The weather wasn’t even warm, yet he was drenched. Strangely, it didn’t smell bad at all. Instead, there was a clean, soapy scent mixed with a light masculine sweat, something unexpectedly attractive. He noticed Josie standing at the doorway and frowned slightly.“Did I disturb you again?”Josie’s mind exploded on the spot.No way. Wasn’t last night intense enough? Was he really going for another round tonight? His stamina was ridiculous! How much energy did this man have? Her cheeks flushed instantly. She stammered, “N-no. I just… you looked like you didn’t eat dinner, so I made something.”She held out the insulated food container. “Instant noodles aren’t healthy. If it’s not enough, I can send more for you two.”“You two?”Hugo’s

Mrs. Lopez looked at the three sports cars gleaming under the garage lights, her eyes filled with regret.“Miss Lindsay, you treasured these cars the most. You even had the whole garage expanded just so they would have enough space.”She sighed inwardly. They had been such a good couple, so in love. How had things fallen apart to this point?Josie’s voice was calm. “There’s nothing between us anymore. Mrs. Lopez, please have them dealt with as soon as possible.”With that, she walked straight to the key cabinet on the other side of the garage and took out a set of keys. It was the Bentley Susan had given her for her birthday last year.“Mr. Wilson,” she told the driver waiting nearby, “pull out the white Bentley and follow behind my car.”When she returned to her apartment building, she had just parked when she spotted Hugo’s tall, lean figure walking out of the convenience store. He was holding a cup of instant noodles as he stepped into the elevator.Josie froze for a moment.
