Chapter 7

Author: Lotus
The commotion had drawn every eye in the ballroom.

Rafael's face was deathly pale while his lips parted to find a way to save himself.

Before he could speak, Natalia stumbled forward with one hand clutching her pregnant belly and the other locking desperately around his arm.

"Rafael, did you just tell her you'd like to start over? If you want her child, what about our baby?"

A shocked hush spread through the guests as I watched it all with a cold, amused smile curled up on my lips.

Rafael's face went from gray to ashen as he tried to pull free. "Natalia, let go! I was just—"

"Just what? I'm carrying your baby, a Holloway!" she sobbed. Tears smeared her makeup all over her face and exposed her haggard features.

She grabbed his hand and pressed it to her stomach before raising her tear-streaked face. "You promised my father you'd take care of me forever and swore you'd give us a family! And now, you stand here with the audacity to beg for another chance from the woman you abandon

A few years later, at the International Youth Science Innovation Awards, Luca stood tall in his suit on the bright stage. When they handed him the gold trophy, the hall erupted in applause.Beaming, the host handed him the microphone as well. "Mr. Rossetti, would you like to say a few words?"Luca talked into the microphone, and his clear voice rang steadily through the hall. "I want to say thank you to my mother. She's my greatest role model."I smiled and applauded as my eyes drifted down to my phone. A news alert flashed on the screen. "The Holloway family of Southern Silenzio has begun liquidating assets and core businesses to cover mounting debts. Insiders reveal toxic tensions and bitter fights between Don Rafael Holloway and his wife."An attached photo showed him disheveled, hollow-eyed, and unkempt. Natalia stood beside him in a stained dress, screaming hysterically at him.I swiped the notification away. When the ceremony ended, Luca bounded down the steps toward me w

  • Dumped by the Don, Crowned by the Mob   Chapter 6

Seven years later, at the Montrava International Financial Hub, I stepped in while taking Father by the arm. Right now, I was the undisputed leader of Northern Silenzio."Donna Rossetti." That was what they called me now.At my side, Luca Rossetti's little fingers tickled my right palm for attention. I smiled and gently ruffled his hair. "What is it, my angel?""Mother, that man's been staring at you the whole time," he whispered a reminder, while his eyes stayed locked on a figure in the far end of the ballroom. He'd sharply noticed the unfriendly stare for some time now.It was Rafael. Gone was the golden prince of Southern Silenzio, and what stood in his place now was a haggard, gaunt man. Natalia stuck to him and glared at me with wide, wary eyes.I turned away, unbothered. "Don't mind him."But Rafael stepped forward anyway and shoved Natalia aside when she tried to hold him back. He staggered on unsteady feet and reeked of heavy liquor."Gianna, it's been seven years…" His

In Montrava, the grand ballroom of the Rossetti estate was ablaze with lights.Northern elders had gathered in force to welcome my return."Gianna," Father called out to me in a commanding voice as he first raised his glass. "Welcome home."I lifted my crystal glass and swept my gaze over the crowd. Some of them were Father's loyalists, some new-blood upstarts, and others who once scoffed at me, the Rossetti Principessa who'd "betrayed" the North and run off to the South. As I smiled, my voice was calm and rang out clearly. "Thank you, everyone. I've learned a lot these years in the South.""Oh, for instance?" Some leaned forward, amused.I set my glass down and began to say, "For example, their port runs on bribes to marine customs officers, and I have that list now."Their arm deals hinge on three key brokers, one of whom now works for me."Two-thirds of their casino cash flow was never declared. By tomorrow morning, the tax office will deliver a friendly tax audit notice rig

"What the fuck did you just say? What the fuck is she doing there?"A rush of cold unease hit Rafael's chest, followed by overwhelming suffocation. Before he could process his thoughts, his phone started buzzing violently. He snatched it up, silently praying that it might be me. But it was Natalia. If it were before, her call might have stirred only helplessness and weary indulgence. But now, all he felt was irritation and bitter disappointment. She could barely hide the delight in her voice as she said, "Rafael, I heard the wedding hit a snag…" Rafael could feel his temples throb. Looking around, he could see the glee written over every guest's expression."Natalia, I don't have time—""I can step in!" she anxiously cut him off. "I'm right outside the chapel. The Holloways can't afford this humiliation, and I can—"He hung up on her with a hard slap of his phone. In that split second, he understood exactly how I must have felt, standing at the altar. This was what it felt li

  • Dumped by the Don, Crowned by the Mob   Chapter 3

As the morning sunlight spilled into the kitchen, I hummed an old Northern tune, frying bacon and a sunny side up egg at my own pace. This was a farewell feast I'd gotten myself.I pulled out a chair and sat down. Just as my fork touched the soft yolk, the door opened with a soft click.Rafael walked in, reeking of Natalia's perfume and holding a huge bouquet of flamboyant strelitzia. It was a kaleidoscopic mix of bright orange and gold with stiff stems sticking out from the sides.I hated those flowers and always thought they looked cheap and forced, like a dressed-up turkey ready to be served. But Natalia loved them. She said they were hardy like the version of herself she longed to be."Morning, Gianna." His voice was rough from a night up, but he seemed in good spirits. He dumped the tacky bouquet on the far end of the table and dropped into the seat across from me.Then, he said, his tone jokingly unhappy, "Natalia was a handful last night and kept whining that the new paink
