Leone Donato walked in, followed by his personal stylist and two Soldati.

His gaze swept over the ring I had taken off and left on the table, yet he didn't ask why I had removed it.

"Our engagement party is tonight." Leone came to stand beside me, his fingertips brushing lightly over my shoulder. He continued gently, "Behave yourself, and don't let anything go wrong."

"Leone." With the prenuptial agreement laid out before me, I looked up at him. "Why is Shadowbough, the organization I founded, being put under Camilla's name?"

Leone's gaze fell on the section I had yet to sign. For a moment, a flicker of discomfort crossed his eyes.

The terms on that page were clear.

First, all my personal income after marriage would remain my own. I could live on the family estate, but I would never be allowed to have any say in family affairs.

Second, the intelligence organization I had founded, Shadowbough, would be transferred entirely into Camilla Conti's name.

Four years of our relationship had been reduced to two cold, impersonal terms.

There was no trace of panic on Leone's face. Instead, he simply raised a hand and gently smoothed the stray strands of hair at my temple.

"Camilla just returned to the country, so she needs Shadowbough as a safeguard. Besides, the dark side of the family is too cruel. I don't want to drag you into it."

I turned my head away to avoid his touch.

When he saw that I remained silent, his brows drew together slightly. "Isola, I always thought you didn't care about these things."

"I used to think so too."

Leone failed to catch the meaning behind my words and merely pushed the fountain pen toward me.

"This family is complicated, and the contract is just a formality. Becoming the Donna doesn't mean you have to get involved in all the bloodshed and violence."

He leaned forward slightly, his voice softening with a note of reassurance. "All you have to do is stand by my side and leave the rest to me."

His voice was gentle and alluring, yet my mind had never been clearer.

"Once you sign, the engagement becomes official. Nothing in our lives will change."

That meant I would continue living in the estate under his name, bearing the title of Donna in name only, and be summoned to his side only when he had the time to spare.

So, this was the future he had promised me.

A knock sounded at the door, reminding us that it was almost time for our scheduled appointment at the marriage licensing office.

Leone reached out to straighten the shawl draped over my shoulders, his movements almost tender.

"Don't make a scene today. Once we've signed the papers, there's still a party to attend. All the family elders will be there. If you have any grievances, we'll deal with them after the party."

I stared at my own reflection in the mirror—my face was deathly pale.

In a daze, I recalled the night four years ago when I had given up my offer from a research institute for Leone.

He had held me just like this and said, "Isola, I'll never let you regret this."

But when the day finally came that I truly regretted it, he thought I was just throwing a tantrum.

I stopped arguing and said, "Fine."

Leone's expression softened, as though he had always known that all it took was a slight darkening of his expression for me to eventually give in.

He left with his entourage, and as I watched his retreating figure, my vision blurred.

Two years ago, a rival family had ambushed Leone. When a bullet came hurtling toward his heart, I threw myself in front of him and took the shot meant for him.

As a result, I lost the baby I was carrying.

As I lay fighting for my life, he held my wounded body in his arms and swore that he would spend the rest of his life making it up to me.

How ironic. The security he had promised me had ultimately been placed in a trust fund for Camilla.

After Leone left, I locked the door from the inside.

A new email had arrived on my phone. My professor, Enzo Ferrante, had replied.

"The position in the research group is still available. However, the project has already begun, and you must arrive in Zurevia to complete your registration within the next 72 hours. Isola, this is your last chance."

I stared at the words "last chance" for a long time. Then, I booked a plane ticket.

This time, I refused to lose myself for Leone again.

Leone flew back to the estate overnight. The first thing he did was summon Dante and order him to revoke every privilege Camilla had been granted, reclaim all the trust assets allocated to her, and revoke the authorization that allowed her to exercise the Donna's decision-making powers on his behalf.I heard that when the news reached Camilla, she was in her little villa, sorting through the jewelry Leone had given her.Furious, she snatched a necklace from the table and hurled it to the floor. She couldn't accept that everything she'd once possessed had vanished overnight. She called and messaged Leone incessantly, but he ignored every attempt to contact him.Eventually, Camilla went to the estate, only to be stopped at the entrance by Matteo. No matter how hard she tried, Leone refused to see her.All the comforts and privileges Camilla had enjoyed for years had depended entirely on Leone's protection. "Isola."At the sound of Leone's voice, I turned around. Immediately, the smile on my face faded. My colleagues sensed the tension and asked if I wanted them to stay."No, it's okay." I handed my documents to another researcher on the team. "I'll be right back."Leone walked up to me and said, "I've come to take you back."I glanced at the car behind him. "Back where?""To our home. I'll transfer all my rights within the family to you, and the rumors surrounding the secretly recorded video have been cleared up. If you want to continue your research, I can build you a lab back at home."Leone spoke with absolute confidence. He had spent the flight drafting a compensation package—authority, shares, a trust fund, and an entire standalone research building. He thought these would be enough to prove how sincere he was. However, I simply asked, "You still think I left because I wanted more?"Leone faltered. "That's not what I meant."I looked at him calmly. "But all you've talked a

The call finally connected. In the background, the sound of an unfamiliar public announcement could be heard.I didn't greet him by name. Instead, I simply asked, "Who is this?"Leone tightened his grip on the phone. "It's me."After a brief silence, I asked in an indifferent voice, "What do you want?"That calmness made Leone's chest tighten."I've cleared up the rumors, and I'll return Shadowbough to you as well. Drop the lawsuit and come back. We'll have the wedding again.""The agreement terminating our engagement is already in effect," I stated simply."I never agreed to it!""I don't need your permission for anything I do," I said, my voice perfectly even. For the first time, Leone realized that the authority he had always taken for granted no longer had any effect on me."If you want power, I can give it to you. I can transfer all my rights within the family into your name, and I'll take care of the trust fund issue too.""Leone, those aren't the things I want.""Th

The entire Shadowbough network had now broken away from the Donato family and become an independent organization. All Shadowbough operatives still under Leone's command were required to immediately suspend any assignments he had given them. The loss of the Shadowbough intelligence network came at an enormous cost to the family.Leone tried to build a new intelligence system from scratch, but it never came close to matching Shadowbough's former capabilities.Alessandro's eyes were bloodshot with anxiety. "Don Donato, Signorina Munari took more than just an organization with her. She spent four years painstakingly building our intelligence network, source by source."It'll take us at least another four years to build a team that can rival Shadowbough. But our enemies aren't going to wait four years for us."Leone stood amid the chaos. For the first time, he realized that the intelligence network he took such pride in owning had never truly been held together by him.A news alert

Leone dialed my number at 6:00 am, and an automated voice repeatedly informed him that the number he was trying to reach had been disconnected. He tried again using Alessandro's phone, but the result was the same.I didn't just block him. I even gave up the number I'd had for four years.Alessandro searched every hotel in Corvessia, the apartment complex where I used to live, and the homes of several of my friends. But no one had seen me.Only then did Leone remember that, years ago, I'd cut off contact with my old friends and family to be with him. He didn't even know which city my parents were living in now.At 9:00 am, he ordered his driver to take him to my former university.Professore Ferrante had just finished a meeting. When he saw Leone, his expression turned cold.Leone got straight to the point. "Where is Isola?""That's her private business." Professore Ferrante had no desire to entertain him. He gathered his documents and started walking away.Leone stepped in fro

Camilla had been born with a congenital heart condition and had grown up alongside Leone. Even as a teenager, he had promised her that he would protect her for the rest of his life.Protecting her was a duty etched into his very bones, and he saw no contradiction between that duty and his love for me.His feelings for me were genuine. It was just that, whenever he had to weigh our needs against each other, Camilla's safety would always come first. He believed I should understand that the title of Donna and the right to live in a luxurious family estate were already the greatest privileges he could offer me.After setting his phone facedown on the table, Leone continued the meal with Camilla. As far as he was concerned, my so-called departure was nothing more than another way of forcing him to give in.In the four years we'd been together, I'd had my share of tantrums. The longest I'd ever stayed angry had been two days. In the end, I'd still waited outside the organization's hea
