Chapter 3

Autor: Flora Johnson
I arranged to meet Leone at the underground mafia organization's headquarters we had built together.

Four years ago, he had provided the initial funding and connections among the upper echelons, while I had been responsible for establishing the intelligence network, training the lower-ranking operatives, and designing the headquarters' security defenses.

From a small team of barely a few dozen members, the organization had grown steadily into an underground power that could no longer be ignored in the region.

Yet, from the very beginning, all official titles and registered assets had been placed under Leone's name.

I had once thought it didn't matter. After all, we were going to get married sooner or later. Only now did I realize that it had been nothing more than my own wishful thinking.

"I want to take the entire intelligence archive of Shadowbough with me."

I spread a thick stack of encrypted hard drives and hand-drawn security blueprints across the table.

"The intellectual property rights to the intelligence materials, along with the entire network of informants I've established, are to be transferred into my name."

Leone leaned back in his dark leather chair, as though he had just heard a childish demand.

"Once we're married, what difference does it make whether everything in this organization belongs to you or not?"

"It makes a difference." I held his gaze. "This organization bears the Donato name, not the Munari name."

His expression darkened. "Just because the prenuptial agreement doesn't provide you with a trust, you're going to drag up every grievance from the past four years?"

I looked at him, my heart turning to ice.

I had never cared about the wealth or status this marriage could bring me. What truly cut me wasn't the cold wording of the trust clauses, but Leone's blatant favoritism.

For four years, I had built the intelligence network with my own hands and helped him survive several deadly coordinated attacks.

Yet, in Leone's eyes, my sacrifices and everything I had worked so hard to build were simply what he expected of me. But the moment Camilla appeared, everything I had ever given suddenly became worthless.

Just as I was about to speak, a commotion erupted outside the door.

With red-rimmed eyes, Camilla walked in clutching the bare neckline of her dress.

"Leone, the brooch my maternal grandmother left me is missing."

The Soldato who had accompanied her reported in a low voice that, according to the surveillance footage, I was the only person who had entered the VIP lounge.

Every eye in the room turned toward me.

I took out my phone and ordered, "Pull up the complete surveillance footage."

Camilla quickly shot a meaningful glance at the Soldato beside her.

The Soldato looked visibly troubled.

Camila clutched Leone's sleeve, the panic in her eyes vanishing almost as quickly as it appeared. She immediately reached out and took hold of his arm.

"Forget it. Perhaps I've simply forgotten where I put it. Don't put Isola in an awkward position on my account."

The more magnanimously she played the victim, the more suspiciously everyone looked at me.

Leone was silent for a few seconds before pulling me aside.

"It's Camilla's first formal dinner since returning to the country. If this gets blown out of proportion, it'll damage her reputation."

I was so furious that I nearly laughed. "Why would her reputation be damaged when she's the one who lost something, while I'm the one being accused of stealing it?"

"I never said you took it," Leone said in a hushed tone. "Just apologize for now to smooth things over. I'll buy you a more expensive brooch later."

I had been falsely accused, yet instead of finding out the truth, his first instinct was to throw money at me to keep me quiet.

As I looked at the man I had loved for four years, I suddenly realized I could no longer even feel disappointed in him.

"And what if I refuse to apologize?"

"Isola, don't make this difficult for me."

His gaze had taken on a note of warning. My innocence wasn't even worth defending when weighed against Camilla.

I nodded and said, "I understand."

I didn't bow to Camilla or apologize to her. Instead, I took out the withdrawal and termination agreement I had prepared in advance and signed my name right in front of Leone.

I relinquished everything—management rights over the headquarters, the organization's profit shares, and every family privilege promised to me as part of the engagement.

But in the agreement's appendix, one clause was stated in unmistakably clear terms. Effective from the date of my withdrawal, the entire Shadowbough intelligence network would be permanently shut down and sealed, and I would take with me all original intelligence archives and informant lists.

Assuming I had finally given in and backed down, Leone merely skimmed a couple of lines before quickly signing his name.

Half an hour later, the Soldati found the missing brooch tucked inside an inner compartment of Camilla's own handbag.

With red-rimmed eyes, she explained that her personal assistant, Serena Lombardi, had probably misplaced it there by mistake.

Leone merely remarked, "As long as it's been found."

Not a single person apologized for accusing me of theft.

I gathered all the signed agreements and turned to leave the headquarters.

A notification from the airline appeared on my phone.

"You have successfully checked in. Your flight departs tomorrow at 3:40 pm."

Leone flew back to the estate overnight. The first thing he did was summon Dante and order him to revoke every privilege Camilla had been granted, reclaim all the trust assets allocated to her, and revoke the authorization that allowed her to exercise the Donna's decision-making powers on his behalf.I heard that when the news reached Camilla, she was in her little villa, sorting through the jewelry Leone had given her.Furious, she snatched a necklace from the table and hurled it to the floor. She couldn't accept that everything she'd once possessed had vanished overnight. She called and messaged Leone incessantly, but he ignored every attempt to contact him.Eventually, Camilla went to the estate, only to be stopped at the entrance by Matteo. No matter how hard she tried, Leone refused to see her.All the comforts and privileges Camilla had enjoyed for years had depended entirely on Leone's protection. "Isola."At the sound of Leone's voice, I turned around. Immediately, the smile on my face faded. My colleagues sensed the tension and asked if I wanted them to stay."No, it's okay." I handed my documents to another researcher on the team. "I'll be right back."Leone walked up to me and said, "I've come to take you back."I glanced at the car behind him. "Back where?""To our home. I'll transfer all my rights within the family to you, and the rumors surrounding the secretly recorded video have been cleared up. If you want to continue your research, I can build you a lab back at home."Leone spoke with absolute confidence. He had spent the flight drafting a compensation package—authority, shares, a trust fund, and an entire standalone research building. He thought these would be enough to prove how sincere he was. However, I simply asked, "You still think I left because I wanted more?"Leone faltered. "That's not what I meant."I looked at him calmly. "But all you've talked a

The call finally connected. In the background, the sound of an unfamiliar public announcement could be heard.I didn't greet him by name. Instead, I simply asked, "Who is this?"Leone tightened his grip on the phone. "It's me."After a brief silence, I asked in an indifferent voice, "What do you want?"That calmness made Leone's chest tighten."I've cleared up the rumors, and I'll return Shadowbough to you as well. Drop the lawsuit and come back. We'll have the wedding again.""The agreement terminating our engagement is already in effect," I stated simply."I never agreed to it!""I don't need your permission for anything I do," I said, my voice perfectly even. For the first time, Leone realized that the authority he had always taken for granted no longer had any effect on me."If you want power, I can give it to you. I can transfer all my rights within the family into your name, and I'll take care of the trust fund issue too.""Leone, those aren't the things I want.""Th

The entire Shadowbough network had now broken away from the Donato family and become an independent organization. All Shadowbough operatives still under Leone's command were required to immediately suspend any assignments he had given them. The loss of the Shadowbough intelligence network came at an enormous cost to the family.Leone tried to build a new intelligence system from scratch, but it never came close to matching Shadowbough's former capabilities.Alessandro's eyes were bloodshot with anxiety. "Don Donato, Signorina Munari took more than just an organization with her. She spent four years painstakingly building our intelligence network, source by source."It'll take us at least another four years to build a team that can rival Shadowbough. But our enemies aren't going to wait four years for us."Leone stood amid the chaos. For the first time, he realized that the intelligence network he took such pride in owning had never truly been held together by him.A news alert

Leone dialed my number at 6:00 am, and an automated voice repeatedly informed him that the number he was trying to reach had been disconnected. He tried again using Alessandro's phone, but the result was the same.I didn't just block him. I even gave up the number I'd had for four years.Alessandro searched every hotel in Corvessia, the apartment complex where I used to live, and the homes of several of my friends. But no one had seen me.Only then did Leone remember that, years ago, I'd cut off contact with my old friends and family to be with him. He didn't even know which city my parents were living in now.At 9:00 am, he ordered his driver to take him to my former university.Professore Ferrante had just finished a meeting. When he saw Leone, his expression turned cold.Leone got straight to the point. "Where is Isola?""That's her private business." Professore Ferrante had no desire to entertain him. He gathered his documents and started walking away.Leone stepped in fro

Camilla had been born with a congenital heart condition and had grown up alongside Leone. Even as a teenager, he had promised her that he would protect her for the rest of his life.Protecting her was a duty etched into his very bones, and he saw no contradiction between that duty and his love for me.His feelings for me were genuine. It was just that, whenever he had to weigh our needs against each other, Camilla's safety would always come first. He believed I should understand that the title of Donna and the right to live in a luxurious family estate were already the greatest privileges he could offer me.After setting his phone facedown on the table, Leone continued the meal with Camilla. As far as he was concerned, my so-called departure was nothing more than another way of forcing him to give in.In the four years we'd been together, I'd had my share of tantrums. The longest I'd ever stayed angry had been two days.
