Chapter 4

Autor: Flora Johnson
I woke before dawn.

The apartment was quiet.

Leone hadn't come home the night before.

I took only two suitcases, my research materials from the study, and the research institute's admission letter that I'd locked away in a cabinet four years ago.

As for the clothes and jewelry Leone had bought me, or the supplementary credit card he had given me, I didn't touch any of them.

Before leaving, I deleted my fingerprints from the door lock.

The unsigned prenuptial agreement still lay on the table, along with the diamond ring.

It turned out that after four years together, all I'd left behind occupied only a tiny corner of the table.

On the way to the airport, my phone suddenly began vibrating nonstop.

A video was circulating among the mafia families of Corvessia.

The secretly recorded footage showed me taking off my ring, then signing the withdrawal agreement at the organization's headquarters.

According to the video's narrative, I had been denied the power I demanded within the underground organization and was deliberately calling off the wedding to force Leone into giving in.

Some sneered that I was a greedy nobody who'd set her sights on a powerful man above her station.

Others claimed that Leone had supported me for four years, and that now with Camilla's return, I had become shameless enough to extort him for everything I could get.

Given the camera angle, the video could only have been filmed by someone close to Camilla.

My lawyer, Valentino Visconti, advised me to release a public statement immediately to set the record straight.

But first, I called Leone.

He answered on the fourth ring.

I heard the delicate clinking of glassware in the background. Camilla was asking him whether he wanted to try some of her soup.

"What is it?" Leone asked impatiently.

"Have you seen the video circulating online?" I inquired.

"I have."

"That's not what happened." I tightened my grip on the phone. "I want you to have it taken down everywhere and make a public statement that I never demanded any shares or power within the family."

There was a brief silence on the other end.

"Camilla has only just returned to the country, so she's not familiar with how the media operates. We can't be sure she was the one who leaked the video."

I pressed him. "What if she was?"

"Isola." His voice grew stern. "You shouldn't target her based on baseless speculation. Why don't you go back to the estate first? Once you've calmed down, we can discuss our engagement again."

The car had already arrived at the airport terminal entrance, and the driver got out to help unload my luggage.

Through the car window, I gazed at the flight information scrolling across the terminal's giant display. Then, I asked softly, "Leone, what if I really am exactly what the video says I am?"

A faint scoff came through the phone.

"Don't use leaving to threaten me. There's no way you'd give up your place as my wife or walk away from me. Come back when you're done throwing a tantrum."

I said nothing more.

After ending the call, I bundled together the secretly recorded video, the appendix to the trust agreement, and the withdrawal agreement from the organization's headquarters.

Then, I sent them all to Valentino with the message, "Proceed as planned."

He replied at once, "Understood. Contact me once you've landed."

After blocking Leone on every possible channel and deactivating all my social media accounts, I walked through airport security with my suitcase in tow.

Just before boarding, I received a message from Professore Ferrante.

"The team is waiting for you in Zurevia."

I replied, "Noted."

As the cabin doors were about to close, a flight attendant reminded all passengers to switch their devices to airplane mode.

I took out the SIM card I had used for four years and snapped it in half.

The plane began taxiing slowly toward the runway. As it pierced through the thick blanket of clouds, I took one last look at the city below.

The familiar lights of the family estate and the silhouettes of the towering skyscrapers gradually receded into the distance, until they were swallowed completely by an endless sea of white clouds.

Leone flew back to the estate overnight. The first thing he did was summon Dante and order him to revoke every privilege Camilla had been granted, reclaim all the trust assets allocated to her, and revoke the authorization that allowed her to exercise the Donna's decision-making powers on his behalf.I heard that when the news reached Camilla, she was in her little villa, sorting through the jewelry Leone had given her.Furious, she snatched a necklace from the table and hurled it to the floor. She couldn't accept that everything she'd once possessed had vanished overnight. She called and messaged Leone incessantly, but he ignored every attempt to contact him.Eventually, Camilla went to the estate, only to be stopped at the entrance by Matteo. No matter how hard she tried, Leone refused to see her.All the comforts and privileges Camilla had enjoyed for years had depended entirely on Leone's protection. "Isola."At the sound of Leone's voice, I turned around. Immediately, the smile on my face faded. My colleagues sensed the tension and asked if I wanted them to stay."No, it's okay." I handed my documents to another researcher on the team. "I'll be right back."Leone walked up to me and said, "I've come to take you back."I glanced at the car behind him. "Back where?""To our home. I'll transfer all my rights within the family to you, and the rumors surrounding the secretly recorded video have been cleared up. If you want to continue your research, I can build you a lab back at home."Leone spoke with absolute confidence. He had spent the flight drafting a compensation package—authority, shares, a trust fund, and an entire standalone research building. He thought these would be enough to prove how sincere he was. However, I simply asked, "You still think I left because I wanted more?"Leone faltered. "That's not what I meant."I looked at him calmly. "But all you've talked a

The call finally connected. In the background, the sound of an unfamiliar public announcement could be heard.I didn't greet him by name. Instead, I simply asked, "Who is this?"Leone tightened his grip on the phone. "It's me."After a brief silence, I asked in an indifferent voice, "What do you want?"That calmness made Leone's chest tighten."I've cleared up the rumors, and I'll return Shadowbough to you as well. Drop the lawsuit and come back. We'll have the wedding again.""The agreement terminating our engagement is already in effect," I stated simply."I never agreed to it!""I don't need your permission for anything I do," I said, my voice perfectly even. For the first time, Leone realized that the authority he had always taken for granted no longer had any effect on me."If you want power, I can give it to you. I can transfer all my rights within the family into your name, and I'll take care of the trust fund issue too.""Leone, those aren't the things I want.""Th

The entire Shadowbough network had now broken away from the Donato family and become an independent organization. All Shadowbough operatives still under Leone's command were required to immediately suspend any assignments he had given them. The loss of the Shadowbough intelligence network came at an enormous cost to the family.Leone tried to build a new intelligence system from scratch, but it never came close to matching Shadowbough's former capabilities.Alessandro's eyes were bloodshot with anxiety. "Don Donato, Signorina Munari took more than just an organization with her. She spent four years painstakingly building our intelligence network, source by source."It'll take us at least another four years to build a team that can rival Shadowbough. But our enemies aren't going to wait four years for us."Leone stood amid the chaos. For the first time, he realized that the intelligence network he took such pride in owning had never truly been held together by him.A news alert

Leone dialed my number at 6:00 am, and an automated voice repeatedly informed him that the number he was trying to reach had been disconnected. He tried again using Alessandro's phone, but the result was the same.I didn't just block him. I even gave up the number I'd had for four years.Alessandro searched every hotel in Corvessia, the apartment complex where I used to live, and the homes of several of my friends. But no one had seen me.Only then did Leone remember that, years ago, I'd cut off contact with my old friends and family to be with him. He didn't even know which city my parents were living in now.At 9:00 am, he ordered his driver to take him to my former university.Professore Ferrante had just finished a meeting. When he saw Leone, his expression turned cold.Leone got straight to the point. "Where is Isola?""That's her private business." Professore Ferrante had no desire to entertain him. He gathered his documents and started walking away.Leone stepped in fro

Camilla had been born with a congenital heart condition and had grown up alongside Leone. Even as a teenager, he had promised her that he would protect her for the rest of his life.Protecting her was a duty etched into his very bones, and he saw no contradiction between that duty and his love for me.His feelings for me were genuine. It was just that, whenever he had to weigh our needs against each other, Camilla's safety would always come first. He believed I should understand that the title of Donna and the right to live in a luxurious family estate were already the greatest privileges he could offer me.After setting his phone facedown on the table, Leone continued the meal with Camilla. As far as he was concerned, my so-called departure was nothing more than another way of forcing him to give in.In the four years we'd been together, I'd had my share of tantrums. The longest I'd ever stayed angry had been two days. In the end, I'd still waited outside the organization's hea
