Chapter 4

Author: Yakamoz
I didn't regain consciousness until three days later.

I woke up in the treatment center, every rise and fall of my chest sending burning pain shooting through me. The sides of my neck and my arms were littered with tiny needle holes from the healers dealing with the miasma toxin.

Odelia was sitting by my bed when I woke up.

"Don't move. Your heart actually stopped beating for several minutes, and the miasma toxin had already started spreading through your blood. If the patrol member had found you just a little bit later, there was a high possibility that you would've lost the ability to shift permanently. And that was only if you successfully pulled through."

Instead of saying anything, I simply gazed at the door.

She followed my gaze before dropping her voice low. "After the patrol member found you, he did come here to find Arthur. However, Arthur was busy taking care of Beth at the time, so he only told us to treat you with a standard antidote first."

I dug my nails into the blanket covering me.

"Lucky for you, an old warrior returning from the border just so happened to pass by the camp, and he had a specialized antidote with him."

Odelia brought a glass of warm water to my lips before continuing, "The convoy already left last night. The camp's official response to the public regarding this incident is that you'll head to the Stonefang pack alone after you've recovered."

At that moment, the sound of soft weeping came from outside the door.

"I just grumbled a little to Lia, I swear! I didn't know that she would lock Nora in the forest…" Beth sobbed through her tears. Then, she started panting. "Arthur, my chest is hurting again."

Immediately, Arthur soothed her gently, "Stop overthinking things. Follow my breathing, okay? Take it slow."

A moment later, the door was opened before a group of people filed inside the sickroom.

Arthur walked at the front of the group, with Beth following closely behind him, then Carl, Lucas, and Ethan. With the sudden addition of five more people, the already small room felt even more cramped.

Carl set a fruit basket down on the table. "Beth hasn't eaten anything for two days now out of guilt. Nora, it's good that you're finally awake."

Squeezing the hem of her dress, Beth stepped closer, her eyes red-rimmed. "Nora, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault for not filtering what I said. It's because of me that you had to go through all that."

Ethan placed a medical kit on the bedside table. "Beth was so upset at what happened to you that she insisted on coming personally to apologize. Stop holding it against her, okay?"

I merely stared at the herb pouch and asked, "Did you all go past the Graywoods that night?"

Lucas opened his mouth, a complicated look on his face, though he couldn't seem to find the words to speak.

Arthur sat on the edge of my bed and pulled the blanket higher, covering the needle marks on the backs of my hands.

"You just woke up, so stop brooding over the events of that night."

"When you heard that the patrol member was looking for you, did you know that he was talking about me?"

Turning to glance back at Beth, who was still sobbing, he answered, "He only told me that someone was poisoned by the miasma toxin. I didn't know that your condition was that serious."

Then, he frowned tightly before adding, "Beth wasn't feeling well at the time too. It's not like I can clone myself and take care of both of you at the same time. Since you've always been adept with herbs, I thought that you could pull through."

Beneath the blanket, my fingers curled into tight fists.

"So, she needs you, while I'm supposed to pull through it all alone."

"Nora, there's no changing what's already happened. Arguing over who takes priority is completely pointless now."

Carl was quick to add, "Lia will be exiled from the camp. Once she's been exiled, not a single pack will ever take her in again."

Nodding in agreement, Lucas piped up, "Let's end this matter here, alright?"

I lowered my gaze. "Alright."

This would be the last time I would let things end this way.

Hearing that, Arthur finally relaxed, his tense expression easing. He reached out to brush some hair out of my eyes, but I turned my head away, causing him to miss.

After they had left, I rang the bell by my bedside.

Odelia bustled in soon after and began checking my pupils.

"Considering the seriousness of your condition, the treatment center has delayed your departure to one month later."

"At the crack of dawn tomorrow, a supply convoy will be passing by the camp's back door, right?"

That had Odelia pausing. "If you leave now, you'll suffer terribly on the journey."

"I've already pulled through the most difficult phase."

She eyed me for a moment, then took out a letter from a folder. "I had a feeling you wouldn't miss out on this chance, so I had a letter authorizing an early departure prepared for you already."

I nodded my thanks and took the letter from her.

Early the next day, I joined the convoy with firm resolution burning in me.

As the pack's territory receded into the distance, I took out my phone and blocked Arthur and the others' numbers.

Meanwhile, Arthur, who had come to the treatment center to visit me, realized that I had disappeared. He immediately started calling me over and over, but the calls wouldn't go through.

At that moment, he finally panicked.

The day I returned to the camp, the car took the same mountain path I'd taken ten years ago.Off in the distance, the Graywoods was shrouded in morning fog. The stone gates had also been replaced with new ones.I simply shot them a glance before walking into the newly built antidote research center branch. The first order of business for the new branch was to revise the miasma zone training protocols. Any trainee entering the Graywoods had to carry a miasma inhibitor. Then, before sunset, the patrol team had to double-check the list of names of those who entered the forest to ensure they had returned.Arthur completed his reassessment and officially became the Alpha. However, due to his negligent actions back then, his authority was limited when it came to certain matters.Any decisions concerning major medical matters, potion preparation, or the handling of the wounded required independent approval from the Royal Academy of Healers. The day he formally assumed the position of

The Royal Academy of Healers held its research findings presentation at the imperial city. For the first time ever, the identities of the staff involved in the confidential project were released to the public. On the day of the official announcement, the camp notice board was crowded with people. At the very top of the notice was the name of the new antidote, "Homeward No. 1 Miasma Inhibitor."Below that was a list of the core researchers who had worked on the antidote."Head Antidote Researcher: Nora Brighton."Arthur stood at the edge of the crowd, staring at that name for who knew how long.Over the past ten years, he had considered countless possibilities. One of them was that I had died long ago, and the Royal Academy of Healers had simply been keeping my death a secret. It wasn't until this moment that he finally realized what I had been doing for the past ten years.…The day of the research findings presentation, Arthur and the other three sat in the very last row.I

In my third year at the research station, I became a core member of the miasma antidote group. The research station let me contact my family through a special communication line for the Royal Academy of Healers. The moment the screen lit up, Mom's eyes reddened."You've lost weight.""We've been running quite a lot of experiments recently."Dad, who was standing next to Mom, asked if I had gotten hurt.I surreptitiously yanked my shirt sleeve lower to hide the marks that hadn't yet faded from my arm."No. It's really safe here."Subsequently, they told me that Arthur and the rest had dropped by the house several times to look for me.At first, they only asked where I had gone. Eventually, though, Arthur would come over periodically to ask my parents whether they had heard any news about me."He wants us to pass on a message to you," Mom began hesitantly."What?""He said that he knows that he was wrong, and he'll keep waiting for you to come back."I was silent for a momen

"When you went past the Graywoods that night, did you notice anything strange?"Ethan was silent for a long moment before he answered, "I caught Nora's scent.""Why didn't you investigate it?""Arthur said that there was no way she would enter the forest. Lucas was also urging us to leave because Beth wasn't feeling well, so we had to escort her back to her dorm quickly."The Head Elder stared at him. "And so you left?"Bowing his head, Ethan replied, "Yes."Lucas, who had been standing by the wall nearby, went ashen. That night, they had all heard Ethan's words, yet not a single one of them had stopped to verify whether it really had been me.As the culprit who had locked the gates, Lia was also brought in for questioning again. Her exile from the camp hadn't been carried out yet, so when she learned they were reinvestigating the case, she finally admitted the truth."It was Beth who told me that Nora was afraid of the Graywoods. She also told me that I just needed to scare

The research station the Royal Academy of Healers had set up at the border was located deep within a valley, behind tall walls that circled the station. The entire research station was filled with sealed cabinets, lab benches, and miasma toxin samples from various Mistwoods.A staff member handed me an ID tag showing I had been assigned to the miasma antidote group. The head researcher of our team pushed a row of sealed samples toward me."These are miasma toxin samples gathered from different Mistwoods. Your job is to analyze their toxicity and improve on the current antidote."Putting on some gloves, I picked up the first sample. Through the sealed glass, I thought I could detect that same suffocating smell I had at Graywoods.Currently, the only antidote we had could only remove a small amount of toxin from someone who had been poisoned. Once the toxin entered the bloodstream, the effectiveness of the antidote dropped rapidly.I had personally experienced it myself.First, th

After the supply convoy entered a closed-off stretch of road, a staff member in the Royal Academy of Healers uniform joined us."From now on, you'll only be known by your research ID number." He took my phone and placed it in a sealed bag. "During the duration of the project, your identity records will be sealed, your personal phone number will be suspended, and your mind links won't be able to get through the barrier around the border."I nodded. "Understood."The supply convoy resumed its journey, heading straight through the thick fog that shrouded the mountain path leading to the border.I shut my eyes.At long last, nobody would be telling me to be more understanding and considerate. Nobody would decide where I went or tell me I had to give up my spot for someone else.Meanwhile, back at the camp, Arthur stood in the empty sickroom at the treatment center. A terrible scowl darkened his features as he stared at the empty bed and the neatly folded blanket."Where's Nora?"Th
