Chapter 4

Auteur: Dark Caramel
"W-What did you say you added to the dishes?" I asked tensely, a chill running down my spine.

"It's just some ground sesame seeds. Do you have to make such a big deal out of it, Daisy?" Wendy asked with a grin, her eyes gleaming with unmistakable malice.

In that instant, my face went deathly pale. I was severely allergic to sesame, so much so that even a trace of it could have put my life at risk.

An itchy, tingling sensation spread through my body. I stumbled into the bathroom to rinse my mouth, but it did nothing.

Within minutes, my throat began closing up. A suffocating feeling overwhelmed me. I staggered and collapsed onto the floor.

Zachary rushed over after hearing the noise and helped me onto the couch. He then asked urgently, "Where's her allergy medication, Wendy?"

Wendy scoffed, her face full of contempt. "She's clearly faking it again! She literally just had a bit of ground sesame seeds! Why is she making such a huge deal out of it?"

"Where is the allergy medication, Wendy?" Zachary snapped, his stomach dropping as he saw me struggling for air.

Wendy reluctantly tossed him a bottle of pills.

Zachary hurriedly took the bottle, poured two pills into his hand, and put them in my mouth. He finally breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Please don't blame Wendy for this. She didn't mean anything by it, Daisy.

"She just wanted to rein in your temper, since every time you throw a fit, you talk about breaking up with me and even get my family involved to push me around. She just got fed up watching you treat me like that.

"She even came prepared with allergy medication, so you'll be fine after taking it, Daisy."

I forced myself to meet his gaze and asked hoarsely, "Y-You actually stood by and let her put ground sesame seeds in my food, then?"

Zachary looked away nervously, unable to meet my eyes.

Wendy scoffed. "Zachary has been fed up with you for ages! You're needy, clingy, and constantly throwing fits! You even keep using your connection with his aunt to get your way!

"If someone didn't put you in your place today, you'd just keep pulling the breakup card whenever you feel like it! Who could put up with that, Daisy?"

Zachary looked away in silence, tacitly agreeing with everything she said.

I shook all over, my throat swelling so badly that even breathing caused sharp, agonizing pain, and hives began spreading across my entire body. Yet, the worst part was the numbness that had settled in my heart.

Seeing no improvement in my condition, Zachary couldn't help but ask, "Is this allergy medicine actually working? Why does Daisy still look so bad, Wendy?"

"How can allergy medicine work that fast? Give it a minute, Zachary!" Wendy said impatiently, pulling Zachary away.

"Come on! I'll take you to the movies! It's on me! Daisy will be completely over her allergic reaction by the time we get back! It'll do her good to sit with this for a while, unless you want her bossing you around for the rest of your life, Zachary!"

Zachary's refusal never made it past his lips. He instinctively looked at me, a flicker of conflict in his eyes, but he followed Wendy out in the end.

My breath grew shallower by the second. I forced myself up and reached for the pill bottle on the table, my hand shaking violently. It wasn't allergy medication—it was just some vitamin C supplements.

Wendy had never planned on giving me real medication from the very beginning.

A cold wave of pure despair washed over me as the world started going dark. I gathered the absolute last bit of energy I had left and took out my phone.

…

Third-Person's POV

In the meantime, after distractedly sitting through a movie with Wendy, Zachary was dragged into a bar by her.

He grew increasingly restless as it neared 1:00 am, unable to shake the nagging feeling that something was wrong.

Wendy was drunk out of her mind at that moment, so he had to take her home first. She started throwing another drunken fit once he got her into the room, so much so that she even tried to jump from the balcony.

He had no choice but to stay and keep an eye on her. He looked after her through the night and hurried home the next morning.

He noticed a crowd had gathered outside his apartment building, heightening his sense of foreboding. He then heard people nearby discussing something.

"There was an ambulance here last night. There was a young woman in the building who suffered a severe allergic reaction and went into anaphylactic shock. She was in critical condition back then!"

"How awful! Did she make it?"

"Your guess is as good as mine. I saw them carry her out of the building, and honestly, it looked touch-and-go. How tragic…"

Zachary was instantly struck dumb by what he heard. He turned deathly pale as his blood ran cold.

Helena looked deeply apologetic. "I'm so sorry, Daisy. I swear I didn't tell him you were getting married. Zachary found the invitation you sent me and followed me here on the sly. I really couldn't stop him. "I've already called his parents, but if it bothers you, I'll take him away right now, Daisy.""It's alright, Helena," I said with a smile, shaking my head and looking completely unbothered. "It's all behind me now, so anyone who showed up to celebrate with me today is a welcome guest."That applied to my ex as well. Zachary was nothing more than just a stranger I used to know well.I hadn't seen Zachary in a year, and he looked like a completely different person. He had lost his former high spirits, leaving him looking thoroughly drained and defeated. When he saw me in my exquisite wedding dress, Zachary's eyes instantly welled up, his face a picture of despair. "Daisy—"I politely cut him off, saying, "Please don't address me in such an intimate manner. Harry won't be h

I was just joking around with my friends—"Before she could finish her excuses, Zachary grabbed her by the neck, the veins on his arm bulging from the sheer force he used.Wendy's friends screamed in horror.Zachary ignored them, his mind replaying what Wendy had just said. "You're saying the pills you gave me for Daisy weren't allergy medication? They were just vitamin C? How dare you, Wendy!"He tightened his grip, leaving Wendy unable to make a sound except for raspy, breathy gasps.Hearing the commotion inside the private room, the people outside rushed in, worried things would turn fatal. It took three or four men to wrestle Zachar

"W-Wendy?" Zachary pushed Wendy away forcefully, looking completely flustered. "W-What are you doing here? Where's Daisy?"Wendy was still asleep when Zachary pushed her off the bed. She crashed to the floor and woke with a jolt of pain. She was about to curse him out, but her fury faded as soon as she looked at him. She gazed at him shyly and asked, "What are you talking about? I'm the one who stayed with you last night, Zachary…"Zachary glared at her, furious. "You weren't the one I was supposed to meet last night! Where is Daisy? You promised you'd bring her here. How the hell did I end up with you, Wendy?"Wendy looked irritated for a second before she suppressed it and adopted an aggrieved expression. "I-I couldn't get hold of Daisy at her workplace last night… I didn't want to leave you hanging, so I went to the restaurant instead."I was going to explain everything when we got somewhere private… but you were so drunk that you thought I was Daisy, and then we…"She traile

"You'd do that for me?" Zachary asked, pleasantly surprised."Of course! I'll even keep everything under wraps. I'll make sure Daisy gets an unforgettable proposal!" Wendy exclaimed."Awesome! I'll head over to the restaurant now to set things up. You can pick Daisy up and bring her over later!" Zachary ended the call and excitedly grabbed his car keys, heading to the fine-dining restaurant.Meanwhile, Wendy's expression hardened, her eyes burning with jealousy and rage. She kept muttering under her breath, a malicious scheme taking shape in her mind. "Zachary is mine! I'll never let you have him, Daisy!"…At 8:00 pm, Zachary was standing on the second-floor balcony in his suit, waiting for Daisy. He kept adjusting his tie, his eyes drifting to the entrance again and again. He had never been rattled while handling multi-million-dollar deals, but now his palms were clammy with nerves.Just then, a figure appeared at the entrance.Zachary looked over right away and spotted

It was a little after 5:00 pm, and Zachary was getting ready to head over to Daisy's company to pick her up from work when his phone suddenly rang.Wendy called, her tone bright and cheerful. "I'll treat you to dinner tonight since you looked after me all night yesterday! I just came across this super hyped restaurant that's supposed to be amazing, Zachary!""I'll have to pass, so go on without me, Wendy. I'm spending time with Daisy tonight," Zachary said, instinctively refusing Wendy's invitation.Just as he was about to hang up, Wendy voiced her annoyance. "You're actually running off to Daisy again? Why is she so annoying and clingy? Didn't yesterday's stunt with the ground sesame seeds teach her anything at all?""You're not allowed to say that about Daisy! She's my girlfriend, Wendy!" Zachary's brow furrowed, his tone laced with displeasure.Wendy was momentarily stunned. She started yelling from the other end, her voice turning shrill. "How dare you snap at me because of

"Daisy!" Zachary pushed his way through the crowd like a madman and sprinted up the stairs. He stumbled more than once, nearly tumbling down.He finally unlocked the front door and rushed inside, only to find the apartment completely empty. He noticed that the dishes he had cooked last night were still on the dining table, giving off an unpleasant odor.He quickly pulled out his phone and tried calling Daisy, but it kept going straight to voicemail. He messaged her on WhatsApp, but it stayed stuck on a single gray check mark. That actually put his mind at ease. He figured that if Daisy could still block him on WhatsApp, then she had to be alright. He then mused that the young woman who had gone into anaphylactic shock after suffering a severe allergic reaction and had been taken away in the ambulance couldn't possibly be Daisy. He thought Daisy was likely at work at the moment.Zachary sighed in frustration at that thought. He slumped onto the couch and lit a cigarette, only to
