Chapter 2

Penulis: Idlehands
Lila's glass slammed onto the floor with a sharp shatter. Sparkling cider splashed all over the hem of her dress, but she didn't care.

She just stared at Joshua and cried, "Mr. Allen, Mrs. Allen is smearing my name!"

Matilda lost her composure first. "Shannon, you vicious bitch! You can't get pregnant yourself, so now you're cursing my son? Where's the report? Who knows where you got these fake documents from?"

I pushed the papers toward her. "He underwent three separate tests in the Urology Department at Valemont Hospital. Matilda, can you read?"

Her lips turned purple with rage.

Joshua reached out to snatch them, but I pulled them back a step ahead of him. "Don't rush. I printed 100 copies. For every one you tear up, I'll hand out another."

Joshua lowered his voice. "Shannon, it's my mother's birthday today. Let's talk about this at home."

"Home?" I glanced at Lila. "Your lover is already sitting at the head table. What home am I supposed to go back to?"

Lila sobbed even harder. "Mr. Allen, I really don't know why Mrs. Allen hates me so much. I grew up without parents to love me. Mrs. Allen Senior was nice to me, and I was just craving that warmth. If Mrs. Allen doesn't like me, I'll just leave."

She stood up as she spoke, but her legs suddenly gave out, and she collapsed straight into Joshua's arms. He instinctively caught her.

The relatives' looks toward me instantly shifted, like they were looking at an unreasonable shrew.

Matilda seized the moment. "Look at this, everyone! This is how she bullies people! Lila is such a sweet young lady, but look at what she's been driven to!"

I began to clap. "Sweet? Oh, she's real sweet. Sweet enough to use my husband's card to buy a downtown condo. Sweet enough to post the title deed on Instagram with the caption, 'Finally have a home.'"

Lila's face drained of color.

Joshua snapped at once. "Enough!"

I was far from done.

I tapped my screen to cast it. The big display on the room's wall lit up.

Photos cycled through one after another, showing Lila wearing my watch, sitting in the passenger seat that was supposed to be mine, and lying in my master bedroom bed.

The captions were even better.

"So this is what it feels like to be cherished by someone."

"He said Shannon has a bad temper. I'll be nice from now on."

"The soup the maid made is so good."

Matilda froze for a second when she saw that last photo. She had made that bowl of soup. On a day I wasn't home, she had personally delivered it to that condo.

Joshua gritted his teeth. "Shannon, you had me investigated?"

"If you weren't so filthy, would I have found anything?"

Lila suddenly clutched her stomach. "It hurts… Mr. Allen, my stomach hurts…"

Matilda looked like she had been hit by lightning. "My grandbaby!"

She lunged over to support Lila, fawning over her grandbaby with way more affection than its real mother ever showed.

I calmly picked up my purse. "Matilda, don't be so quick to claim it. I've already booked a DNA test."

Joshua stared daggers at me. "Don't you dare."

I smiled. "What wouldn't I dare? See you at the hospital tomorrow at 9:00 am."

Lila went completely stiff.

Matilda suddenly lunged forward, raising her hand to strike me.

I grabbed her by the wrist. "Old hag, think this through. If this hand lands, this birthday party turns into a criminal investigation."

Joshua finally couldn't hold it in. "Shannon, do you really have to drive everyone into a corner?"

I shoved Matilda's hand away. "I'm not driving anyone into a corner. When you all took my things and handed them over to her piece by piece, you never thought I'd demand them back."

I walked toward the doorway.

Behind me, Lila called out to him through her tears, "Mr. Allen, I'm scared."

Joshua didn't chase after me. He only threw out one line. "Shannon, if you dare show up at the hospital tomorrow, we're getting a divorce."

I turned back to look at him and sneered. "Fine by me."

It was Thanksgiving the day Joshua came to trouble me.I was in the kitchen making ravioli. Eric stood beside me, looking as serious as if he were auditing a financial statement.I glanced at the ravioli he pinched together. "Is that ravioli or a rock?"He said, "It'll cook.""Is it edible?""Depends on your standards."Just then, the doorbell rang. I thought it was Abbie. But when I opened the door, I saw Joshua standing outside. He wore a faded down jacket, clutching a bag in his hand. Snow had settled on his shoulders. He had grown so thin he was completely unrecognizable.Eric walked up behind me without a word.Joshua's eyes dimmed when he caught sight of him. "I'm not here to make a scene."He handed the bag toward me. "Here's 10 thousand dollars. I know it's not enough, but this is all I have right now."When I didn't take it, he looked down with a bitter smile. "Back when we got married, I said I'd give you a proper wedding once I made it. Then I made it, and I forg

The lawsuit dragged on for eight months. Joshua lost 20 pounds, and Matilda aged remarkably, too. When I ran into them in court, I almost didn't recognize them.Lila was handled in a separate case. Her ex ran off with the cash, leaving her to shoulder the debts all by herself. She tried reaching out to Joshua several times to get back together, only to be chased off by Matilda with a broom every single time.Abbie was the one who kept me updated on all this, but I didn't care much to listen. Finally, the final verdict came through. The house was awarded to me, and Joshua was ordered to compensate for my losses of marital property. As for the forged signature, he faced separate legal accountability. The company suffered a devastating blow after the investigation and was ultimately sold off at a bargain price. It was only on the day the buyer's representative arrived to sign the paperwork that I learned Eric had set up the deal for me.The buyer was his uncle.I asked him, "Di

The year Dad was hospitalized, the doctor had said the surgery needed to be done as soon as possible.I had scraped together every penny I could, selling jewelry and borrowing from friends.Joshua had held me, repeatedly apologizing. He said the company's account was frozen and that as soon as the funds cleared, he'd hand them over to me immediately. In the end, Dad didn't survive that surgery.I always believed it was just fate. But now, Lila was telling me that Joshua took that exact money to buy a hefty retirement insurance policy for Matilda instead.Matilda slammed the table in a panic. "You're talking absolute nonsense!"Lila sneered. "Mrs. Allen Senior, I've seen the policy myself. You even boasted about it to me, saying how devoted your son was to you and that no wife could ever compare to a mother."At those words, Matilda's face turned ash-gray.When Joshua rushed over to drag Lila away, Eric stepped in front of me. "Mr. Allen, keep your distance."Abbie had already

Eric wasn't the sweet-talking type. After helping me haul in the coffee beans, he sat down on the couch, flipped open his laptop, and got straight to auditing the accounts. When I poured him a glass of water, he said, "No need."I cut up some fruit for him, but he simply told me not to bother. In the end, I just sat down.Eric said, "Your ex-husband is dumber than I thought."I almost choked on my water. "Do you always speak like that?"He adjusted his glasses. "I'm holding back."As I stared at the endless list of bank transactions on the screen, a headache began to creep in.Eric, however, looked at them as if he were reading a menu."Right here." He tapped the screen. "Your ex-husband used the company account to pay for Lila's condo renovations, categorizing it as office equipment procurement."I frowned. "Can we recover that?""Yes. And here. He bought her a car with the invoice issued under the company name.""That can be recovered too?" I asked."Yes." He glanced at

Joshua really did show up. He stood at the entrance of my new apartment building, his suit a crumpled mess. Stubble was coming in, and his eyes were completely bloodshot. As I walked back carrying groceries, he reached out to take them.I stepped aside. "Say what you need to say."His hand froze in midair. "You're living in a place like this?"I glanced over at the guardhouse by the gate. "It's fine. At least nobody's bringing a mistress home to sit at the head table."His face drained of color as he said, "I cut ties with Lila."I nodded. "Congratulations."As I walked, he followed right behind me. "She lied to me. I already had someone take back the condo. I returned your watch, too. I'll pay back the rest of the money, little by little."Hearing that, I stopped in my tracks. "And your point is?"Joshua lowered his voice. "Let's start over."I looked at him.If this scene had played out a year ago, I might have relented. We had been together for seven years after all, and

I didn't regret a single thing. In reality, the only one filled with regret was Joshua.Three days later, instead of my returning home to admit fault, all he got was a court summons and a notice that the company's accounts were frozen. After getting married, I had always managed the company's finances.Later, Matilda complained that I was showing my face too much in public.Joshua had chimed in too, "Shannon, you're working way too hard. Just stay home and rest. I'll take care of you."So I stepped down. However, I kept every single set of books.Joshua thought I was only good for making soup and mopping floors. He forgot that I had handled all the company's earliest taxes, loans, and contracts.Abbie laughed hard after reviewing the documents. "Is this even a divorce case? You're handing Joshua a pair of handcuffs."I shook my head. "Not just yet. I want him to spit every penny back out first."Things were just as lively on Lila's end. Her ex-boyfriend heard she had managed t
