Chapter 7

Author: Love Berries
When he mentioned Megan, Aurora’s lips curled slightly.

If she really went through with this marriage, she couldn’t imagine how Megan would react.

But then again… Lucas’ face alone made it hard not to waver.

She needed to marry someone she didn’t dislike, someone with good character.

Honestly, Lucas was the best option.

Aurora’s red lips curved into a smile as she blinked playfully. "Lukey, I don’t think I have a reason to say no."

"Then tomorrow at 10 a.m., at the city hall," Lucas said, meeting her gaze.

Aurora nodded.

It seemed he had other matters to attend to, as he turned to leave.

But just as he was about to step away, he paused.

His brows furrowed slightly, his tone casual but pointed. "About Joseph Hunt…"

"It’s over," Aurora lowered her gaze, recalling Joseph’s arrogance earlier.

"Don’t worry, I’m not the type to go back to an ex."

Only then did Lucas turn and walk away.

Aurora watched his retreating figure, feeling an odd sense of disbelief.

She was really about to marry Lucas.

She didn’t tell Grace about the marriage in advance.

Lucas had always been low-profile, an elusive figure even in the media.

And in truth, this marriage felt more like a formality to satisfy their families.

If she really thought about it, their connection, aside from that one reckless night and her fleeting, unspoken crush, mostly came from the fact that he was Megan’s cousin.

The next day, they walked out of the city hall, each holding a crisp marriage certificate in hand.

Only now did the reality of marriage begin to sink in for Aurora.

"Now that we're officially married, should we move into our place?" she asked hesitantly.

She wasn’t exactly experienced in these matters, nor did she know Lucas well enough to predict his response.

Aurora didn’t know much about the specifics of the Carter family’s business, only that they were exceptionally wealthy.

However, families like theirs always had an estate or a property set aside for newlyweds.

At the sound of the word “we,” Lucas’ lips curled slightly, an almost imperceptible reaction that vanished in an instant.

"Of course," he said coolly.

He handed her a set of keys along with a small red box.

Aurora opened it and paused.

Inside was a diamond ring.

And not just any ring—it was exactly the style she liked.

Understated yet exquisitely crafted, luxurious yet elegant.

It suited her past tastes perfectly.

"A wedding ring," Lucas said in his usual calm tone, his gaze resting on her as he added casually, "Want to try it on?"

Even after playing the role of a struggling student for three years, Aurora still couldn’t resist something that sparkled this beautifully.

She nodded.

Lucas took the ring and slid it onto her finger.

"Do you like it?" His voice remained indifferent, yet his gaze was focused entirely on her.

"If not, we can get another one."

Aurora’s lips curved into a smile.

"I like it."

There was no reason not to like a diamond ring worth nearly seven figures.

Back when she was with Joseph, the most expensive ring he ever gave her was a plain one.

She even returned most of the money he transferred to her.

He had barely spent his money on her.

For men like him, the truest sign of sincerity was investing in the woman they cared about.

The Waltons were never short on money, but feeling Lucas’ generosity still put Aurora in a rare good mood.

Lucas handed her another card.

At first, Aurora assumed it was for household expenses.

But then, he glanced at her and said in an unhurried tone, "The house is taken care of by the staff. This is for your personal spending, Mrs. Carter."

His voice was calm, indifferent, as if he were mentioning something trivial.

Aurora’s eyes flickered as she arched a brow, her red lips curving playfully. "Lukey, aren’t you worried I might run off with your money after I’m done sleeping with you?"

"Run off with my money..."

Lucas let out a low chuckle, his voice deep and smooth. "That’s fine. Name your price, Mrs. Carter. As for sleeping with me..."

Their eyes met.

His sharp, narrow eyes, porcelain-like skin, and perfectly sculpted features grew nearer and nearer.

Then, he leaned forward, pulled her close by the waist, and kissed her.

When Lucas heard the update, the gloom in his eyes deepened.“Find her. If you can’t, pack your bags and go to Fortline tomorrow.”Desmond nearly blacked out. Before he could even protest, the call ended with a hard click. He threw a few punches into the air in sheer frustration. This was absolutely insane.Aurora was out of her mind, and Lucas? A full-blown maniac. What the hell were these two trying to do in the middle of the night? With a long breath, Desmond finally calmed himself, channeling his rage into a small act of rebellion. He changed Lucas’ contact name in his phone from “Boss” to “Madman.”Still, when it came to orders, he knew better than to ignore them. He got paid, and he lived by a simple rule—take the money, do the job.As crazy as Lucas could be, the man paid well. He never once shorted his wages. That alone was enough reason to stick around. But now he had a problem—he had absolutely no idea where to start looking for Aurora. Her assistant came to mind, but it w

Maybe there was something mixed into the IV drip to help her sleep, because despite thinking she’d have trouble sleeping, Aurora drifted off surprisingly fast. While she rested peacefully, things on Lucas’ end were far from calm. He’d tried calling her, only to find her phone turned off. The two messages he’d sent had gone unanswered, vanishing into silence. He paced the room, tension written all over him. His anxiety was obvious.Unable to sit still any longer, he called Desmond. He needed to know where Aurora was now.Whatever was going on, he hoped it wasn’t what he feared.Desmond had already gotten home for the night. When he saw Lucas’ name lighting up his screen, he nearly blacked out on the spot.He wanted the world end already. Why did everything always have to go sideways the moment he lay down to rest?He ran a hand through what little was left of his hair, sighed in surrender, and picked up. "Yes, sir? What’s going on? It’s late. What can I do for you?"In real life, Desm

He had no idea how Aurora was doing these past couple of days. While he’d been away, Lucas thought about her more than once—about the warmth of her in his arms and the softness he’d gotten so used to.As for Wendy sitting in the backseat, all Lucas wanted now was to get in touch with Kenneth. He’d had enough of Kenneth’s beloved sister. He truly couldn’t deal with her any longer.Back at the house, Wendy followed him out of the car, sticking close behind, not daring to fall a step behind. The aura radiating off him was downright intimidating, and she didn’t have the nerve to speak up.In truth, she still didn’t know what had come over her when she’d taken his phone. Her body had moved faster than her brain.Biting her lip, she kept trying to build up the courage until she finally reached out and tugged lightly at his sleeve. “Lukey…”Lucas turned, his brows sharply furrowed, his expression icy. “This better be important.”He was waiting to charge his phone. He had no patience left fo

He had meant to call Aurora back. But Wendy was clearly stalling. She was eating slowly on purpose, coming up with excuse after excuse to drag things out.Lucas’ patience wore thin. His expression grew darker with every passing minute.Wendy could sense his rising irritation, but she still forced herself to finish the meal. Even if he ended up resenting her, she was determined to have this dinner this time with him no matter what. And as for Aurora? That woman was just too greedy. Was it too much to ask for one evening? Couldn’t she handle things on her own for once?It was infuriating. Finally, the dinner ended—though clearly not on pleasant terms. As soon as Wendy set down her fork, Lucas reached out his hand, his face cold and unreadable. He didn’t need to say anything; the meaning was clear.Wendy let out a dry chuckle. “I knew I had to give it back. If I wasn’t going to, I wouldn’t have taken it in the first place. No need to be so dramatic.”Lucas didn’t respond. His hand remai

Aurora glanced at the IV stand—there were still two or three more bags to go. Letting her assistant wait through all that wasn’t right; it would completely disrupt his rest."Go home. That’s an order. I’ll be fine on my own. I’m planning to get some sleep anyway. If anything comes up, I’ll call the nurse."Hearing that, Ian couldn’t insist any further. One look at the seriousness on Aurora’s face, and he knew she meant it."Alright then, Miss Walton. I’ll come by first thing tomorrow morning."Aurora nodded, agreeing at last. She knew if she didn’t, he would likely stay the whole night. She understood her people well, especially the kind of person he was. After he left, the hospital room fell into a heavy silence, leaving Aurora completely alone. She stared blankly at the television mounted on the white wall.Time passed without her noticing. The vibrant glow that usually lit up her features was gone now, leaving behind only weariness and fatigue. She picked up her phone and checked

This also made it easier for the medical team to proceed with treatment. When Ian returned to the room with the medication, Aurora happened to open her eyes."Miss Walton, how are you feeling?"Aurora gave a faint shake of her head. She tried to push herself up using her arm, but Ian quickly stopped her. "Miss Walton, you're still on an IV drip. You should stay lying down."Following his gaze, Aurora noticed the IV bag hanging beside her. With no choice, she eased back onto the bed.She cleared her throat and was surprised by how dry and raspy her voice sounded. "Did you bring me to the hospital?"Ian nodded. "Yes, Miss Walton. The doctor said it’s acute gastroenteritis. It has to do with your eating habits. The meal I got you earlier... you didn’t eat it, did you?"Aurora's face rarely showed such embarrassment. "I got caught up with work and forgot."Hearing that, Ian nearly exploded. "Forgot? Miss Walton, you can't be careless with your health!"This is your own body. You’re going
