Chapter 7

Author: Love Berries
When he mentioned Megan, Aurora’s lips curled slightly.

If she really went through with this marriage, she couldn’t imagine how Megan would react.

But then again… Lucas’ face alone made it hard not to waver.

She needed to marry someone she didn’t dislike, someone with good character.

Honestly, Lucas was the best option.

Aurora’s red lips curved into a smile as she blinked playfully. "Lukey, I don’t think I have a reason to say no."

"Then tomorrow at 10 a.m., at the city hall," Lucas said, meeting her gaze.

Aurora nodded.

It seemed he had other matters to attend to, as he turned to leave.

But just as he was about to step away, he paused.

His brows furrowed slightly, his tone casual but pointed. "About Joseph Hunt…"

"It’s over," Aurora lowered her gaze, recalling Joseph’s arrogance earlier.

"Don’t worry, I’m not the type to go back to an ex."

Only then did Lucas turn and walk away.

Aurora watched his retreating figure, feeling an odd sense of disbelief.

She was really about to marry Lucas.

She didn’t tell Grace about the marriage in advance.

Lucas had always been low-profile, an elusive figure even in the media.

And in truth, this marriage felt more like a formality to satisfy their families.

If she really thought about it, their connection, aside from that one reckless night and her fleeting, unspoken crush, mostly came from the fact that he was Megan’s cousin.

The next day, they walked out of the city hall, each holding a crisp marriage certificate in hand.

Only now did the reality of marriage begin to sink in for Aurora.

"Now that we're officially married, should we move into our place?" she asked hesitantly.

She wasn’t exactly experienced in these matters, nor did she know Lucas well enough to predict his response.

Aurora didn’t know much about the specifics of the Carter family’s business, only that they were exceptionally wealthy.

However, families like theirs always had an estate or a property set aside for newlyweds.

At the sound of the word “we,” Lucas’ lips curled slightly, an almost imperceptible reaction that vanished in an instant.

"Of course," he said coolly.

He handed her a set of keys along with a small red box.

Aurora opened it and paused.

Inside was a diamond ring.

And not just any ring—it was exactly the style she liked.

Understated yet exquisitely crafted, luxurious yet elegant.

It suited her past tastes perfectly.

"A wedding ring," Lucas said in his usual calm tone, his gaze resting on her as he added casually, "Want to try it on?"

Even after playing the role of a struggling student for three years, Aurora still couldn’t resist something that sparkled this beautifully.

She nodded.

Lucas took the ring and slid it onto her finger.

"Do you like it?" His voice remained indifferent, yet his gaze was focused entirely on her.

"If not, we can get another one."

Aurora’s lips curved into a smile.

"I like it."

There was no reason not to like a diamond ring worth nearly seven figures.

Back when she was with Joseph, the most expensive ring he ever gave her was a plain one.

She even returned most of the money he transferred to her.

He had barely spent his money on her.

For men like him, the truest sign of sincerity was investing in the woman they cared about.

The Waltons were never short on money, but feeling Lucas’ generosity still put Aurora in a rare good mood.

Lucas handed her another card.

At first, Aurora assumed it was for household expenses.

But then, he glanced at her and said in an unhurried tone, "The house is taken care of by the staff. This is for your personal spending, Mrs. Carter."

His voice was calm, indifferent, as if he were mentioning something trivial.

Aurora’s eyes flickered as she arched a brow, her red lips curving playfully. "Lukey, aren’t you worried I might run off with your money after I’m done sleeping with you?"

"Run off with my money..."

Lucas let out a low chuckle, his voice deep and smooth. "That’s fine. Name your price, Mrs. Carter. As for sleeping with me..."

Their eyes met.

His sharp, narrow eyes, porcelain-like skin, and perfectly sculpted features grew nearer and nearer.

Then, he leaned forward, pulled her close by the waist, and kissed her.

“Lucas, do you really think what you’re doing is appropriate?”Megan instinctively called out Lucas for his behavior. No matter what, she was Aurora’s close friend, so why was Lucas acting like this toward her?Besides, she and Aurora had known each other longer than Lucas had. Wasn’t his coughing just now a bit out of place?Thinking that, Megan seemed to find her footing, straightened her back, and didn’t back down.“She’s my wife. If you think what I’m doing is inappropriate, then do you think it’s appropriate for you to be hugging her?”Lucas spoke as he moved over casually and sat down beside Aurora. With Lucas on one side and Megan on the other, Aurora was tightly sandwiched between them.Aurora felt an immediate headache coming on.Before she could say anything, Megan suddenly wrapped her arms around Aurora’s right arm.“I don’t care. Aurora is my friend too, and I’ve known her longer than you have. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to hug her?“Lucas, what you’re doing is really selfi

“Megan, I hope you don’t overthink things. You need to focus on recovering properly—don’t forget, in a couple of days you’ll still be coming with me to Lakeshore City for the shoot.”“I know. I’ll definitely support you properly.”Aurora’s gaze flickered. She pressed a hand to Megan’s shoulder, then took a step back. The distance between them widened slightly.Aurora and Megan stood facing each other.Seeing this, Megan felt a little puzzled. She tilted her head and looked at Aurora, not understanding what she meant.“Aurora…?”Aurora’s expression turned serious, her eyes fixed on Megan.“Megan, what you just said wasn’t right.”“What was wrong with what I said?”Megan scratched her head, completely confused. From her point of view, there didn’t seem to be any problem with what she’d said.More importantly, she was used to staying by Aurora’s side. No matter what she did, she always liked to ask Aurora’s opinion first.Because of that, she had long felt she wasn’t very capable. She was

Meanwhile, Megan dragged Aurora away in a fury.Right now, she didn’t want to forgive anyone at home.Aurora was such a good person—what right did her father have to say things like that? And besides, it was because of her that things had turned out this way. It had nothing to do with Aurora at all, yet Robert refused to understand. He had pinned baseless blame on Aurora without even asking her opinion.Thinking about it made Megan feel indignant on Aurora’s behalf.“What’s wrong with you all of a sudden?”Aurora was still completely confused. She had been dragged out without warning, and even now, she hadn’t fully processed what was happening.“Aurora, I know my dad went way too far today.”Megan stopped in front of her, hesitation flickering across her face. She genuinely didn’t know how to face Aurora right now.No matter what, her father’s disrespect toward Aurora had been out in the open.Even Megan herself felt it was deeply unfair to Aurora.Aurora waved her hand, showing she di

“Don’t you think it is inappropriate to treat her like this?”Robert start to regret it, but his words had already been spoken, and he still needed to maintain the authority of an elder. To be honest, Robert was somewhat chauvinistic. That was why he never considered the consequences when doing things. In his view, if he wanted to do something, he would just do it.There was no room for regret.Even if he regretted it afterward, he would never show it in front of his wife or child.Doing so would only damage the image he insisted on maintaining.“Enough. I’ve already said what I said. What’s the point of bringing this up now? You’d be better off thinking about how to fix it.”Eleanor looked completely baffled, as if she were seeing Robert for the first time.“Are you serious right now?”She asked in disbelief. It was as if she were meeting him all over again. They had known each other for so many years and even raised a daughter together—how could he say something like this?“Of course

If even her own words no longer carried weight with Megan, then outsiders would surely point fingers behind her back.“So what if you’re her father?”Eleanor felt nothing but scorn about it.“Even if you are her father, the things you said were extremely unpleasant to hear.”Robert was still being stubborn.“How were my words unpleasant?”He snorted coldly, a vague dissatisfaction rising in his chest.“You should know that Megan is our only daughter. Watching Aurora’s life get better and better while our daughter stays stuck in the same place, do you think I wouldn’t be anxious?”Eleanor was stunned.Hearing Robert say this, she was genuinely shocked. After knowing him for so many years, this was the first time he had ever said something like this. And in Eleanor’s understanding, this way of thinking was wrong.Yet before this, she hadn’t noticed the slightest hint of it at all—it was as if this change had happened all of a sudden.Just thinking about that made it feel impossible.“The
