Chapter 7

Author: Love Berries
When he mentioned Megan, Aurora’s lips curled slightly.

If she really went through with this marriage, she couldn’t imagine how Megan would react.

But then again… Lucas’ face alone made it hard not to waver.

She needed to marry someone she didn’t dislike, someone with good character.

Honestly, Lucas was the best option.

Aurora’s red lips curved into a smile as she blinked playfully. "Lukey, I don’t think I have a reason to say no."

"Then tomorrow at 10 a.m., at the city hall," Lucas said, meeting her gaze.

Aurora nodded.

It seemed he had other matters to attend to, as he turned to leave.

But just as he was about to step away, he paused.

His brows furrowed slightly, his tone casual but pointed. "About Joseph Hunt…"

"It’s over," Aurora lowered her gaze, recalling Joseph’s arrogance earlier.

"Don’t worry, I’m not the type to go back to an ex."

Only then did Lucas turn and walk away.

Aurora watched his retreating figure, feeling an odd sense of disbelief.

She was really about to marry Lucas.

She didn’t tell Grace about the marriage in advance.

Lucas had always been low-profile, an elusive figure even in the media.

And in truth, this marriage felt more like a formality to satisfy their families.

If she really thought about it, their connection, aside from that one reckless night and her fleeting, unspoken crush, mostly came from the fact that he was Megan’s cousin.

The next day, they walked out of the city hall, each holding a crisp marriage certificate in hand.

Only now did the reality of marriage begin to sink in for Aurora.

"Now that we're officially married, should we move into our place?" she asked hesitantly.

She wasn’t exactly experienced in these matters, nor did she know Lucas well enough to predict his response.

Aurora didn’t know much about the specifics of the Carter family’s business, only that they were exceptionally wealthy.

However, families like theirs always had an estate or a property set aside for newlyweds.

At the sound of the word “we,” Lucas’ lips curled slightly, an almost imperceptible reaction that vanished in an instant.

"Of course," he said coolly.

He handed her a set of keys along with a small red box.

Aurora opened it and paused.

Inside was a diamond ring.

And not just any ring—it was exactly the style she liked.

Understated yet exquisitely crafted, luxurious yet elegant.

It suited her past tastes perfectly.

"A wedding ring," Lucas said in his usual calm tone, his gaze resting on her as he added casually, "Want to try it on?"

Even after playing the role of a struggling student for three years, Aurora still couldn’t resist something that sparkled this beautifully.

She nodded.

Lucas took the ring and slid it onto her finger.

"Do you like it?" His voice remained indifferent, yet his gaze was focused entirely on her.

"If not, we can get another one."

Aurora’s lips curved into a smile.

"I like it."

There was no reason not to like a diamond ring worth nearly seven figures.

Back when she was with Joseph, the most expensive ring he ever gave her was a plain one.

She even returned most of the money he transferred to her.

He had barely spent his money on her.

For men like him, the truest sign of sincerity was investing in the woman they cared about.

The Waltons were never short on money, but feeling Lucas’ generosity still put Aurora in a rare good mood.

Lucas handed her another card.

At first, Aurora assumed it was for household expenses.

But then, he glanced at her and said in an unhurried tone, "The house is taken care of by the staff. This is for your personal spending, Mrs. Carter."

His voice was calm, indifferent, as if he were mentioning something trivial.

Aurora’s eyes flickered as she arched a brow, her red lips curving playfully. "Lukey, aren’t you worried I might run off with your money after I’m done sleeping with you?"

"Run off with my money..."

Lucas let out a low chuckle, his voice deep and smooth. "That’s fine. Name your price, Mrs. Carter. As for sleeping with me..."

Their eyes met.

His sharp, narrow eyes, porcelain-like skin, and perfectly sculpted features grew nearer and nearer.

Then, he leaned forward, pulled her close by the waist, and kissed her.

Aurora married into one of the wealthiest families, while Grace had nothing to guarantee her own future. All she'd asked was for Aurora to do her one small favor, and Aurora refused. If that was the case, then Grace would rather see her ruined. At this point, she truly didn't care anymore. If Aurora's reputation was destroyed, there was even a chance the written guarantee she'd signed would no longer carry any legal weight. And perhaps Tessa might even be released. The thought alone pleased Grace. The editor-in-chief hesitated."Madam Grace, are we really doing the right thing?""What do you mean by that?"Grace shot him a sharp glare."If you're this timid, you'll never accomplish anything. And don't forget how much money I've invested in this newspaper. Are you already planning to turn your back on me?"Facing Grace's aggressive attitude, the editor-in-chief would have been lying if he said he wasn't afraid. He knew exactly what kind of person she was.In the end, he spoke in a tremb

But it didn't take long for Joseph to realize something was wrong. What about Judy, who was still overseas?Wasn't he supposed to win her back?By slapping Yvonne, hadn't he just cut off every possible path forward?Still, what was done was done.In his mind, as a man, he couldn't back down now. With that thought, Joseph straightened his back."I hit you. So what?" He cleared his throat, his voice rough with emotion. "Yvonne, don't forget, you were the one who crossed the line first. I've put up with you again and again. I think I've treated you well enough, so why are you never satisfied?"Besides, if you hadn't humiliated me in front of Desmond just now, I never would've laid a hand on you."As she listened, Yvonne's eyes grew colder by the second."Fine, Joseph Hunt. I'll remember this slap." She pointed a finger straight at him. "Just don't regret it."The contempt and malice in her eyes were impossible to hide."And don't forget, I still have people overseas. A man like you—what

But now that she'd lost the adoration of millions, it was as though the shell she'd hidden behind had finally fallen away. There was nothing refined or graceful about her anymore. The transformation genuinely caught Desmond off guard. At the same time, though, he couldn't have been more pleased. He'd been worried Yvonne would never admit what she'd done.Instead, after only a few exchanges, she'd practically confessed everything herself.Today's trip turned out to be a complete success.Meanwhile, Joseph stood there, completely stunned. He blinked several times, staring blankly at Yvonne. He looked so dazed it was obvious he hadn't expected to be scolded like that.Desmond burst out laughing."Alright, buddy. My job's done. I've delivered you safely to Miss Song, so I'd say the mission's a success. Whatever happens next is between the two of you. And don't bother calling me about it. I'm out."Then he added with a grin, "Oh, and if someone talked to me like that, there's no way I'd jus

The moment Yvonne saw Desmond, she froze."Desmond? What are you doing here?"The words came out almost as a shriek. The instant she saw him, she realized she'd been set up.She immediately turned to Joseph, her voice rising in disbelief."Joseph Hunt, you sold me out too? What is this? Does this mean we're done working together?"Before Joseph could answer, Desmond spoke instead."So, Miss Song, are you admitting that you and Mr. Hunt have been secretly working together?"Yvonne's head snapped toward him."Desmond, don't twist my words. What exactly are you implying?" she shot back. "What do you mean by secretly working together? We're just acquaintances. Do I have to report everyone I associate with to you?"At this point, there was no way she was going to admit anything.Seeing her deny it, Desmond didn't get angry.Instead, he casually slung Joseph's arm over his shoulder and said, "Mr. Hunt, why don't you explain it to Miss Song yourself?""Do I really have to spell everything ou

Yvonne leaned toward the peephole and saw a familiar face. The moment she threw the door open, she snapped impatiently, "Joseph Hunt, what are you doing? If you've got something to say, just say it. What's with all the theatrics? Were you trying to scare me half to death?"But the instant the door opened, she noticed the bruises covering Joseph's face. She froze."What happened to your face? Tell me the truth. Did someone do this to you?"Even as the words left her mouth, Yvonne found them hard to believe. No matter what, she and Joseph had never been that close. The two of them had even fallen out before.Logically, she should have been pleased to see him beaten like this.Yet now that it had actually happened, an inexplicable discomfort settled over her. After all, he was still someone she intended to keep working with.Seeing him in such a miserable state didn't sit well with her.She had every intention of keeping him under her protection, not watching other people bully him. After

Because it was an assignment Lucas gave him personally, there was no way Desmond was going to forget it or ignore it.Still unwilling to give up, Joseph asked one last time,"Are you really taking me to see Yvonne?"Desmond looked at him with a straight face."Do I look like I'm joking?"Joseph fell silent. This time, he truly had nothing left to say.Desmond's expression made it clear he wasn't joking in the slightest.Joseph finally closed his eyes in resignation."Fine. Whatever. I'll go with you. I don't have anything left to say."Desmond let out a cold snort. He knew it.He'd been right about Joseph all along. The man was trying to play him from the very beginning.Nothing that came out of his mouth was consistent.Desmond noticed it that afternoon. One moment Joseph claimed he knew nothing. The next, he acted as though he'd figured everything out.Anyone else would've broken and told the truth by now.But Joseph was different. The more Desmond thought about it, the more ridiculo

Hearing Aurora’s voice, Megan finally put her phone down and looked up, her expression unusually serious. “Rora, there’s something I’m not sure you know.”Aurora sighed softly. “Well, if you don’t tell me, then I definitely won’t.”Sometimes Megan had this habit—she’d drop a heavy statement and then
