Chapter 9

Author: Love Berries
He wanted to take back all the gifts he gave her after a breakup?

Aurora couldn’t help but laugh at Joseph’s pettiness.

She had always thought he was just a little sleazy, but she hadn’t expected him to be this cheap and stingy.

Thinking about how she was once with a man like that, she felt utterly disgusted.

When she returned to her new home, she immediately started digging through her things, determined to gather up every single gift Joseph had ever given her.

Just then, Lucas walked in.

"What are you looking for?" His voice was calm and indifferent as he glanced at her.

Aurora paused, then casually replied, "Settling debts from a breakup. My ex wants all his gifts back. I've never met a man this desperate for scraps in my entire life."

There was a hint of frustration in her tone, her striking face carrying traces of annoyance.

The next second, her phone chimed.

A bank notification popped up, informing her that $40,000 had been deposited with a memo stating it was a gift.

Lucas cast an uninterested glance at the pile of cheap trinkets scattered on the floor, his expression as indifferent as ever.

"Throw all that junk away."

Aurora froze for a moment before she heard him adding, "Mrs. Carter, I don’t like my wife keeping another man’s things."

She quickly realized that her history of being hopelessly romantic had probably spread far and wide.

Lucas must have assumed she was still hung up on her ex.

"Relax, trash belongs in the trash."

Aurora twirled the sparkling diamond ring on her finger and arched a brow. "Besides, I already have my favorite one."

And she truly did love this ring.

Besides, now that she was married, as Mrs. Carter, she couldn’t let Lucas down.

At her words, Lucas’ lips curved slightly.

Aurora hesitated as she looked at the bank transfer. "Lukey, I should probably return this money to you."

Lucas certainly didn’t care about such a small amount.

But still, it was better to keep things clear.

"No need."

He raised a brow, his tone unhurried. "Don’t worry, I’m not the type to ask for compensation after a breakup. Just think of it as me spoiling my wife."

Aurora had been on the receiving end of Lucas’ generosity before.

She was always close to Megan.

As kids, Megan would often pull her along, acting cute and sweet in front of the adults.

Lucas had been one of those adults.

She remembered how, whenever she pouted and played along, Lucas would smile slightly, his gaze warm as he handed her a thick stack of cash as pocket money.

But this was the first time she was receiving money from him as his wife.

For some reason, her face felt a little warm.

"Then… thank you, Lukey."

She didn’t refuse again.

After packing up the old gifts, Aurora was about to take a shower when she suddenly noticed that the gold necklace Joseph gave her had a patch where the color had worn off.

Her brows furrowed.

She instinctively ran her fingers over the discolored patch and let out a laugh—half amused, half exasperated.

The gold necklace was a fake.

The only valuable-looking gift Joseph had ever given her turned out to be a knockoff.

That night, curled up in bed, Aurora couldn’t resist video calling Megan to vent.

Megan was completely stunned.

"A fake?" Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Has the Hunt family gone broke or something? Who gives a girl counterfeit jewelry as a gift?"

"It was probably something one of Joseph’s friends arranged," Aurora said lightly.

All of Joseph’s gifts were picked out by the people around him.

He had never put much thought into her.

So, it wasn’t surprising that even the gifts were cheap knockoffs.

Megan’s mouth twitched.

Joseph’s behavior was so absurd she didn’t even know where to begin.

Just as they were talking, the bedroom door suddenly swung open.

"It’s late. Aren’t you going to sleep?"

At the doorway, Lucas stood casually, dressed in a thin pajama set.

His dark eyes were unreadable, his posture relaxed, exuding an effortless elegance.

Aurora froze for a moment.

Meanwhile, Megan, still on the video call, was utterly dumbfounded.

"Holy shit! Why is my cousin with you?!"

“And then the baby will be affected too. Could you really bear to see that happen?”The moment Lucas heard that, he immediately placed a hand over Aurora’s stomach and shook his head without hesitation.“How could I ever bear to see either you or the baby get hurt? Of course I don’t want anything like that to happen.”“You and our child… there’s no way I could choose between the two of you. You’re the most important people in my life. “And this is our baby, so of course I’m full of hopes and expectations for them too. That’s why hearing you say things like that hurts me.”There was obvious sadness on Lucas’ face. He had never expected Aurora to say something like that, nor had he ever imagined that one day there would be secrets between them.In his mind, he and Aurora were supposed to be the kind of couple who could tell each other anything. But now, both of them had already begun hiding things from each other. And suddenly, Lucas realized that maybe this way of thinking really had b

“If that’s the case, then I really was in the wrong. Honestly, you should’ve called me out on it sooner.”Aurora immediately felt relieved. At least now, Lucas finally understood what she had been trying to say.And as long as they could still communicate like this, there was always room to work things out between them. Some things simply could not stay buried forever. The healthiest thing was for both of them to know the truth.“It’s okay. I’m telling you now, aren’t I?” Aurora said softly. “The important thing is that both of us should know what’s happening so we can figure out together what the best way forward is, instead of bottling everything up inside.”Aurora stepped forward and gently took Lucas’s hand.“I know you’re trying to protect me, but there are some things I want to face and carry myself too. I don’t want all of this pressure falling entirely on you just because you’re trying to shield me from it. We’re husband and wife.“A marriage means we face things together. If

“Do you really want to know?”Lucas’ expression turned unusually serious. Even now, he still was not sure whether telling her the truth was the right thing to do, nor did he know how much it might affect her.Because in this world, some things could not simply be said without thought.Words carried weight, and once spoken, they could not be taken back. That was why Lucas hesitated so much. He did not know how deeply the truth might hurt Aurora.Nor did he know how much attachment Aurora still had toward Grace. Those were all things he had been considering this entire time, which was why he kept wavering over whether he should tell her the truth. But now, Aurora’s words had struck him hard.“When you put it that way… maybe you’re right,” Lucas murmured quietly. “Maybe I really have been overthinking things. Maybe I’ve been worrying too much.”Aurora realized he was finally beginning to relent, so she pressed on.“Exactly. You always treat me like I’m fragile. You keep saying you’re worr

Besides, the things his own mother had done were far from honorable. If he told Aurora the truth, it would only leave her upset and emotionally drained. In the end, Lucas decided to keep it hidden. But the more he acted this way, the more suspicious Aurora became. At first, she had not thought much of it, but now, seeing Lucas hesitate repeatedly, avoiding the truth and refusing to meet her eyes, only made her curiosity grow stronger.“What exactly is going on?”Aurora’s voice rose unconsciously.“Lucas, we literally just said we shouldn’t keep secrets from each other. Don’t you think the way you’re refusing to tell me the truth right now is a little too much?”After all, they had only just talked about honesty. How could he turn around and hide things from her immediately afterward? How could Aurora possibly not be upset about that?Lucas suddenly found himself at a loss for words. He truly had not meant to hide things from Aurora. He simply believed that keeping this from her was for

And if Daniel remained unconscious for too long, it would not be good for his condition either.Aurora had never been a cold-hearted person. Besides, they had worked together before, and the partnership between them had always been pleasant. There was no way Aurora could stand by and watch someone slowly lose their life right in front of her.If things really came to that, it would be far too unfair to Daniel. After all, he had done nothing wrong. Was he really supposed to spend the rest of his life lying in a hospital bed? Most importantly, the person behind everything still had not been found, meaning Daniel still had not been given any justice.Just thinking about it made Aurora feel sorry for him. That was exactly why she was so desperate to find out who the real culprit was.“This kind of thing can’t be rushed,” Lucas comforted softly. “But on Daniel’s side, I’ll arrange for the best specialists to examine him and figure out exactly what’s going on.”Then he added softly, “Right n

Aurora nodded to show that she understood.“Lucas, I understand what you mean. From now on, no matter what I do, I’ll ask for your opinion first. And I hope you won’t keep things from me either.”Lucas nodded seriously at her words.“I’ve already sent my assistant to gather evidence, but this kind of thing won’t be resolved overnight. I know you’re anxious, and honestly, I’m just as anxious as you are.”Lucas spoke in a steady voice. “But some things aren’t guaranteed just because we want results. All we can do is everything within our power and leave the rest to fate. Still, I’ll do everything I can.”As he said that, he rested his hands on Aurora’s shoulders, his gaze filled with warmth.“The reason I’m willing to put so much effort into this… is because it’s you. I want to help you resolve all of this as quickly as possible. “I don’t want things dragged out any longer, and I refuse to give Edwin another chance to hurt you.“It’s because it’s you that I’m willing to do all this.
