Chapter 9

Author: Love Berries
He wanted to take back all the gifts he gave her after a breakup?

Aurora couldn’t help but laugh at Joseph’s pettiness.

She had always thought he was just a little sleazy, but she hadn’t expected him to be this cheap and stingy.

Thinking about how she was once with a man like that, she felt utterly disgusted.

When she returned to her new home, she immediately started digging through her things, determined to gather up every single gift Joseph had ever given her.

Just then, Lucas walked in.

"What are you looking for?" His voice was calm and indifferent as he glanced at her.

Aurora paused, then casually replied, "Settling debts from a breakup. My ex wants all his gifts back. I've never met a man this desperate for scraps in my entire life."

There was a hint of frustration in her tone, her striking face carrying traces of annoyance.

The next second, her phone chimed.

A bank notification popped up, informing her that $40,000 had been deposited with a memo stating it was a gift.

Lucas cast an uninterested glance at the pile of cheap trinkets scattered on the floor, his expression as indifferent as ever.

"Throw all that junk away."

Aurora froze for a moment before she heard him adding, "Mrs. Carter, I don’t like my wife keeping another man’s things."

She quickly realized that her history of being hopelessly romantic had probably spread far and wide.

Lucas must have assumed she was still hung up on her ex.

"Relax, trash belongs in the trash."

Aurora twirled the sparkling diamond ring on her finger and arched a brow. "Besides, I already have my favorite one."

And she truly did love this ring.

Besides, now that she was married, as Mrs. Carter, she couldn’t let Lucas down.

At her words, Lucas’ lips curved slightly.

Aurora hesitated as she looked at the bank transfer. "Lukey, I should probably return this money to you."

Lucas certainly didn’t care about such a small amount.

But still, it was better to keep things clear.

"No need."

He raised a brow, his tone unhurried. "Don’t worry, I’m not the type to ask for compensation after a breakup. Just think of it as me spoiling my wife."

Aurora had been on the receiving end of Lucas’ generosity before.

She was always close to Megan.

As kids, Megan would often pull her along, acting cute and sweet in front of the adults.

Lucas had been one of those adults.

She remembered how, whenever she pouted and played along, Lucas would smile slightly, his gaze warm as he handed her a thick stack of cash as pocket money.

But this was the first time she was receiving money from him as his wife.

For some reason, her face felt a little warm.

"Then… thank you, Lukey."

She didn’t refuse again.

After packing up the old gifts, Aurora was about to take a shower when she suddenly noticed that the gold necklace Joseph gave her had a patch where the color had worn off.

Her brows furrowed.

She instinctively ran her fingers over the discolored patch and let out a laugh—half amused, half exasperated.

The gold necklace was a fake.

The only valuable-looking gift Joseph had ever given her turned out to be a knockoff.

That night, curled up in bed, Aurora couldn’t resist video calling Megan to vent.

Megan was completely stunned.

"A fake?" Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Has the Hunt family gone broke or something? Who gives a girl counterfeit jewelry as a gift?"

"It was probably something one of Joseph’s friends arranged," Aurora said lightly.

All of Joseph’s gifts were picked out by the people around him.

He had never put much thought into her.

So, it wasn’t surprising that even the gifts were cheap knockoffs.

Megan’s mouth twitched.

Joseph’s behavior was so absurd she didn’t even know where to begin.

Just as they were talking, the bedroom door suddenly swung open.

"It’s late. Aren’t you going to sleep?"

At the doorway, Lucas stood casually, dressed in a thin pajama set.

His dark eyes were unreadable, his posture relaxed, exuding an effortless elegance.

Aurora froze for a moment.

Meanwhile, Megan, still on the video call, was utterly dumbfounded.

"Holy shit! Why is my cousin with you?!"

She turned to Tessa. “Besides, isn’t my sister Tessa still here? She studied the same field as I did. I’m sure her abilities aren’t much different from mine.”At that, everyone followed her gaze toward Tessa.Seeing that she could no longer pretend to stay silent, Tessa forced an awkward smile before stepping forward. “Sister, are you still upset with me?”She deliberately shifted the focus back onto Aurora.Aurora couldn’t help but laugh. “Tessa, that’s a funny way to put it.”“How can you speak like that? She’s your sister,” Grace scolded sharply.Aurora turned her eyes on her. “Madam Grace, this is a shareholders’ meeting. Why drag family into it? What’s next—when negotiating projects, should we throw ourselves on the client’s lap and call him daddy?”The words were harsh, almost cutting.Faces around the room darkened. None of them had expected such things to be said between mother and daughters. They had thought the three of them shared a close bond, but now it all looked like a f

With Aurora present, the comparisons from everyone naturally began. How could these people change sides so quickly?Tessa’s hatred burned stronger. But Grace didn’t seem to care. “What, were you serious about what you said yesterday?”She lifted her eyes to Aurora, still treating yesterday’s words as nothing more than casual.Aurora straightened slightly, her gaze firm on Grace. “I wasn’t joking with you. Everything I said was true. With so many guests there yesterday, how could I possibly have been joking?”At that moment, Grace finally realized Aurora was serious.A ripple of unease spread through her heart. So, Aurora hadn’t been joking after all?Thinking it over, it did make sense. In front of so many guests, if Aurora had been joking, where would her dignity be?After all, Ravenshore was only so big, and everyone in the circle knew each other.“You do realize you’re giving up more than just the identity of a successor.” Grace’s eyes sharpened as they locked onto Aurora. Her words

It seemed they still had to wait for Grace to arrive before anything could begin.Soon, Grace entered the conference room in a black suit, her polished heels clicking against the floor. Her eyes flickered slightly when she saw Aurora. But she said nothing about her being here.Tessa followed close behind her, dressed in a sweet yet formal little dress.Aurora, who had shown no reaction earlier, froze for a moment when she saw Tessa. Her hand tightened under the table. She hadn’t expected that even now, Grace would still bring Tessa along. So, all her words yesterday—Grace hadn’t taken them to heart at all. Did she think Aurora was joking with her? What a joke. And Aurora was right—Grace truly did think that way. After all, with such a bright future ahead, unless someone was a fool, they’d know which choice to make. Not to mention, Walton Corporation’s stock was at a very strong outlook now, its market price anything but low.So even now, Grace still believed Aurora had only been joking

“I’ve just worked with Aurora for a long time. We know each other well. Do you have to control even this?”Leonard showed no sign of backing down. The two of them were at each other’s throats, sharp against sharp.Caught in the middle, Aurora couldn’t help but feel a headache coming on. “Alright, we came here to eat and relax. No need to be so tense.”Megan placed a piece of fish onto Leonard’s plate. “You should eat some meat instead. Don’t overthink things, just get more nutrition.”Seeing that, Aurora also picked up some greens and placed them on Lucas’ plate. “Eat some vegetables and cool your temper. We just need to live our life well. Why get hung up on so much?”Lucas nodded in understanding. But staring at the pile of green vegetables on his plate, he couldn’t help but find it ridiculous. This fool—did she even realize what that gesture meant?Truly reckless. The rest of the meal turned out more pleasant.Aurora and Megan never stopped chatting.Aurora was full of ideas, alread

“That’s only because the studio hasn’t been arranged properly. I know you’re an independent woman, with your own thoughts. You’re not like Wendy,” Kenneth explained. But Judy pulled away from his arms and bent to pick up the drafts on the floor. “I understand all that, but just like these designs—without someone who can recognize talent, no one would ever see their true value.”Kenneth lowered his eyes to the gown sketched on the paper, a flicker of awe flashing in them.He had never really looked at Judy’s drafts before. This was the first time he truly studied them.Only then did he realize her work carried a soul of its own. Before, he thought she was just fooling around. Now he saw it was his perspective that had been too narrow. He suddenly remembered an upcoming design exhibition and decided to take Judy along.“There’s a design exhibition soon. Why don’t you come with me? I’ll invest in it for you.”In the corner where he couldn’t see, Judy’s lips curved faintly.See? The fish h

“Dad and Mom really miss you. They want you to come home and see them.” Wendy glanced at Judy without a change in expression. “So, you won’t be misled by those with ulterior motives and forget where your home is.”“What do you mean by that, Wendy?”Kenneth was protective. “If you want me to come back, then speak properly and show Judy some respect.”Judy listened calmly to the two of them. She knew it wasn’t very appropriate to stay here listening, but at this moment she didn’t know where else to go.Just like Wendy said, this house belonged to her brother. So, no matter where she went, it made no difference. She might as well stay in this room and listen to their conversation. If she went to another room, Wendy might accuse her of stealing something. If she was framed with another charge, she would have no way to defend herself. She was already very clear on these tricks.“Judy?” Wendy sneered. “You sure call her affectionately, but who knows what she really thinks.
