Chapter 4

Author: Yakamoz
The following evening, Cassian arrived at my living quarters with an even nastier expression than before.

"Mom waited an entire afternoon for you. Why didn't you show up to apologize to Daphne?" he asked accusingly.

He seemed to think that I was being horribly ungrateful.

As I tidied up the items scattered across my desk, I asked him without looking up, "When did I ever agree to visit and apologize to her?"

Cassian walked over to the desk, grabbed my wrist, and forced me to look at him.

"Seraphina, must you be so stubborn?" he asked.

He took out an ancient wolf fang amulet.

"Our pup will be born with the blessings of an entire pack. He'll have the best living quarters and the strongest warriors to watch over him. He'll also become my sole successor. Is that still not enough?"

I lifted my hand slightly.

I once imagined countless times how Cassian would look standing before the temple with our pup in his arms. Yet, that same pup never even got to open his eyes before he died.

Cassian continued in a softer tone, "Come back to the main residence with me tomorrow and explain to Daphne that you don't intend to kick her out of the pack."

It turned out that the blessings meant for our pup came with their own conditions.

I slid the amulet back to him and said, "I refuse. Our pup doesn't need to curry favor with Daphne just to earn his father's recognition."

Cassian laughed coldly and gripped the amulet tightly in his hand.

"You're being impossible right now."

He adjusted his collar, then said harshly, "Since you're so fond of putting on airs, there's no need for us to see each other again before the bonding ceremony."

Sure enough, he didn't show up again over the next few days.

He occasionally issued a few inconsequential warnings over our mate bond for me to behave on the day of the full moon and not embarrass us before the pack. Aside from that, he also sent over a flowchart and video showing the setup for the bonding ceremony.

He'd personally taken charge of the temple's decorations.

From blue flowers native to the snowy plains and the local firegrass to berry-flavored wine and moonshine cakes, everything was ordered to my liking.

In fact, the nursery for our pup had also been furnished with the little rocking horse and cradle I'd once described to him. There wasn't a single detail that failed to meet my expectations, but I felt completely unmoved.

Cassian could have been the best mate in the entire pack.

Yet, he'd personally ruined every possibility of that with his unreserved favoritism and indulgence toward Daphne.

On the night before the bonding ceremony, I left behind the gown and crown he'd delivered to my quarters.

Then, I turned and got into the carriage prepared by my maternal pack, beginning my journey back to the Snowfield Pack.

On the night of the full moon, the Gale Pack was brightly lit.

Dressed in ceremonial Alpha attire, Cassian announced to the entire pack that the bonding ceremony and succession ceremony would both be taking place tonight.

His voice rang out loud and clear, filled with absolute certainty about his future.

Meanwhile, I stood at the edge of the snowy plains with my hands lifted toward the rising full moon.

As I uttered my first vow, Cassian, who was standing in the center of the temple, clutched at his chest.

The violent pain of his wolf being torn apart shot through him without any warning.

Blood trickled from the corners of his mouth. He clutched at his chest in agony, staggered, and fell to his knees.

It was a form of punishment according to the Moon Goddess' laws—a devastating sign that one had been well and truly rejected by their destined mate.

The guard who had been sent to fetch me for the ceremony stumbled into the temple.

He reported, "Alpha Cassian… Ms. Lovell is gone… She's taken all her personal belongings with her, leaving behind only a moonstone casket."

Several months later, the harsh winter gave way to spring. As the first rays of early spring sunlight shone down upon the snowy plains, the loud, powerful cry of a pup resounded throughout the Snowfield Pack.My pup—a healthy male—had safely arrived into the world. When the healer placed him into my arms, his eyes were still tightly shut, and his soft fingers clutched at my shirt lapel. My wolf let out a low growl in my consciousness.I leaned down to touch my forehead to my pup's."Welcome to the world," I told him.Outside the window, bells started ringing one after another throughout the pack. The situation within the Gale Pack also came to a head on that same spring day.Ryan got through the vetting process and officially became the new pack Alpha with the unanimous support of both the main council and the Council of Elders. He revoked all Cassian's past orders of merit and mansion rights. Stripped of his titles, Cassian was reduced to an outcast worse off than an ordinar

After the bonding ceremony was canceled, the High Elder immediately put a halt to the succession ceremony."The symbol of succession has been destroyed, and the Snowfield Pack's guarantee has not been received. Until the matter has been thoroughly investigated, Cassian may not assume the position of pack Alpha."Cassian, with a bitter expression on his face, attempted one last, desperate struggle. He said, "Although the symbol of succession has been destroyed, Seraphina is carrying my pup. As long as she returns to vouch for me, the Snowfield Pack will naturally continue to support me."Yet, no sooner had he said those words than a Snowfield Pack envoy stepped expressionlessly onto the altar and revealed a statement that I'd signed with my own hand."Seraphina has already rejected her destined bond with Cassian and, on behalf of the Snowfield Pack, withdrawn any and all support for Cassian. From now onward, the Gale Pack's succession dispute has nothing to do with the Snowfield Pa

Anna staggered two steps back at Cassian's words."Your bond's been severed?" she screeched. In order to sever a destined bond, the initiator had to suffer the agony of having their wolf torn from them. This meant that I had chosen to endure the torturous punishment over having anything more to do with Cassian."You jinx… You damn jinx!"Anna instantly changed her tune and slapped Daphne brutally across the face.Daphne cupped her cheek and stared at Anna in disbelief.Over all these years, Anna had always cared for Daphne as if the latter were her own daughter. No matter what Daphne did wrong, Anna would clean up her mess so long as she claimed that she'd had an episode. But now, only fury remained on Anna's once-kind face.Daphne began, "Mom—"Anna cut her off sharply. "Don't call me that! Do you have any idea what you've ruined? You've ruined my son's future! You've doomed our entire pack!"Daphne started wailing loudly and continued to fall back on her age-old excuse. "I

Before the previous Alpha of the Gale Pack, Henry Flint, passed away, he once met me in private. At that time, Cassian was just the Council of Elders' most favored candidate for the position of pack Alpha. His older brother, Ryan Thorne, had been exiled for years. However, Ryan had never given up on the position of pack Alpha, and there were still many elders who supported him within the Gale Pack. When Alpha Henry handed me the moonstone casket, he told me solemnly, "Cassian is too sentimental and thus easily swayed by others. This symbol of succession is my final endorsement of his right to the position of pack Alpha."Please give it to him once the two of you have completed the bonding ceremony. With this emblem, Ryan won't be able to contest his right of succession."In my past life, I honored Alpha Henry's trust in me.Not only did I give Cassian the symbol of succession, but I even asked my maternal pack to vouch for him and ensure that his position as pack Alpha was fully

After stomping on the crystal and breaking it into pieces, Daphne finally seemed to come back to her senses. She collapsed to the floor with her head in her hands and began to tremble violently, just as she had every time in the past.Big, fat tears rolled down her cheeks."Cassian… I'm sorry. I couldn't control myself again…"She reached out toward Cassian with practised ease, attempting to cling to his legs and pour out her grievances to him."I didn't do it on purpose… I was just afraid that Seraphina was attempting something else to make you kick me out of the pack."However, this time, she wasn't greeted by a warm embrace as she had hoped.Cassian looked down at the crystal shards on the floor, shattered beyond repair, and felt his blood slowly run cold. When Daphne's hand brushed against his pant leg, he took a visible step backward."Don't touch me."Daphne's eyes widened in shock."Cassian?"Cassian looked down at the crystal shards on the floor. He asked in a frig

On a snowy plain thousands of miles away from the Gale Pack, I stood alone at the edge of a towering cliff. As I gazed up at the full moon, I recited an ancient vow."I, Seraphina Lovell, hereby swear an oath to the Moon Goddess. I reject Cassian Wolfe as my destined mate. From this moment on, my life, loyalty, and future no longer belong to him."Moonlight abruptly shone down on me.I felt my destined bond to Cassian, which had not yet been solidified through a mate mark, being forcibly severed. My chest felt as if it'd been ripped apart with sharp claws, and blood rushed up my throat.Deep within my consciousness, my wolf let out a miserable, agonized howl. Yet, it still shielded my unborn pup from harm.It hurt terribly, but inwardly, I felt an unprecedented sense of freedom and release.Meanwhile, far away in the Gale Pack's temple, Cassian was experiencing backlash a hundred times worse than my own.His towering frame was curled up on the ground, convulsing from the anguis
