Chapter 4

Author: Shirley
Bringing me black tea at dawn was completely out of character.

Theresa placed the cup on my nightstand. Her voice was as flat as the wrinkles on her face:

"Drink it."

I understood.

I thought to myself, they really lacked patience. If they had just given me a few more days, I could have died cleanly, without leaving a trace.

Killing me in the estate now would definitely bring massive trouble to the family.

But I didn't say a word. I picked up the bone china cup without hesitation, its surface burning hot.

I tilted my head back slightly and gulped down the black tea as if it were water, finishing it in one go.

The bitterness sank all the way from the root of my tongue into my stomach, and the cup was empty.

I put it back on the nightstand, lay down, pulled the blanket up to my chin, and quietly waited for the end.

Theresa picked up the empty cup and stood by the bed, looking at me for a few seconds. Watching me wait for death without a ripple of emotion, her fingers gripping the cup trembled slightly.

In the end, she didn't say anything and turned to leave.

The poison kicked in quickly.

First came an agonizing pain in my stomach, like countless claws tearing at my organs. Then came a bone-piercing cold that made my whole body convulse and my jaw clench.

My vision began to blur, and my hearing became muffled as if I were underwater.

After that, there was the roar of family vehicle engines, low and suppressed commands from the bodyguards, Theresa's rare urgent urging, and the glaring lights of the clinic's emergency room.

Under the cold lights of the family clinic's trauma room, a thick stomach tube was brutally shoved down my throat. I vomited so violently it felt like my lungs were tearing apart. I looked as pathetic as one could be.

A family doctor in a white coat looked at me, then turned to Theresa, whose face was taut, and frowned.

"Donna Theresa, you brought her in too late. The poison has already taken effect."

He lowered his voice, laced with suspicion.

I used every last ounce of my strength to grab the cuff of his white coat. My throat was so hoarse it was almost soundless:

"It was me. I stole the pills myself."

The doctor froze, and the way he looked at me became very complex.

I let go, collapsed back onto the bed, and stared at the ceiling.

I thought being too stubborn to die was probably a curse too, where I couldn't even die when I tried.

Theresa stood by the bed, her velvet coat stained with a few watermarks.

Before I fell completely into a deep sleep, I thought I caught a glimpse of a teardrop rapidly sliding from the corner of her eye, smashing onto the cold floor tiles.

After I was discharged and returned to the estate, the entire mansion felt as oppressive as a luxurious tomb.

Everything was still extravagant and orderly, but the air was filled with a suffocating silence.

I became more obedient and quiet than ever before.

Eating quietly, going to school quietly, doing chores quietly, even hugging the walls when I walked.

I lived my life like a shadow, trying my best not to take up space.

For the first time ever, I even initiated a conversation with Leo, that spoiled little young master.

"Be good," I said, wiping the ketchup off the corner of his mouth, my voice completely flat. "Don't make Isabella angry anymore."

He blinked his clear, innocent eyes at me, a trace of strange, naive dependence actually showing in his gaze.

As for baby Rosie, Isabella guarded her against me like she was guarding against an assassin ready to pull a gun at any second.

But taking advantage of the gap during the guards' shift change, I still did what I always wanted to do.

I took off the cross necklace that symbolized divine protection. It was the only valuable thing I owned.

While Isabella was distracted in the music room, I slipped in like a ghost and gently tied that cross onto the stuffed animal by the crib.

May she grow up clean and safe.

Having done all this, I decided to run away.

Fine, I admit I'm a coward. Since I couldn't die, I'd just disappear.

There was no need for any goodbyes.

No one cared about me anyway.

The sun was scorching that afternoon, beating down so hard it made me dizzy.

I walked aimlessly along the deep-water piers our family controlled.

Until a sharp, panicked cry pierced the silence.

"Mara!"

  • Dying Was the Best Gift I Gave My Mother   Chapter 10

[Extra]I did indeed leave that world, but it seemed my departure wasn't all that absolute. For some inexplicable reason, I became a working spirit in the transit station of Limbo! After suffering ten full years of hard labor in this lightless place, I finally saved up enough soul chips to reincarnate. The ferryman of Limbo flipped through thick parchment scrolls and asked me in a businesslike tone:"In your past life, you lost your life saving someone else. Your soul carries a strong aura of redemption. The rewards for your reincarnation this time are generous. You can choose to go to North American high society and become an heir to a prestigious family, completely free from want."As soon as his voice fell, the souls lined up behind me let out a chorus of envious gasps.I lifted my chin and snorted coldly."Shallow! Do I look like a cheap ghost who only cares about money? Can mere wealth and status buy me off?"The ferryman raised an eyebrow, looking at me sideways:"Fine, the one w

Isabella abruptly lifted her head.Theresa used her rough fingers to wipe the tears from her face bit by bit."Her bones were broken, her heart was bleeding. And right before she left, she still thought to tuck the very last thing she had to protect someone into the hands of a person who might not care about her at all.""It's not that she didn't hate you.""It's that she was too much like you.""She inherited the bloodline of our family. She was just as stubborn as you, just as foolish. She couldn't even manage to hate someone thoroughly and uproot them completely. She could never go all the way when it came to being ruthless."Isabella suddenly let out a hoarse laugh."She was more like me?""That's right. All the elders in the family gossiped privately that she looked exactly like me when I was young. Her eyebrows, her eyes, the bridge of her nose, she was cut from the same cloth."Her murmur was so faint it seemed it could be blown away by the wind. She slowly raised her hand and t

One afternoon, a loud argument broke out outside. Two guards dragged a violently resisting Ruby into the living room.At that time, Isabella was holding a cup of coffee, watching the nanny feed Leo snacks.Ruby couldn't break free, so she yelled at Leo from a few steps away. Her voice cracked with sobs."It's all your fucking fault! You little brat!""If it weren't for a piece of trash like you, my only sister wouldn't have thrown her life away!"Leo was stunned with terror and burst into loud wails. The coffee cup in Isabella's hand crashed to the floor, shattering into pieces. She signaled the bodyguards to let go and tried to grab Ruby, but Ruby flung her hand away.Ruby's face was covered in tears. She stared straight at her, every word seemingly ripped from her chest."Donna, she and I grew up running around on those docks. She was a much better swimmer than me.""That day, before she walked into the water, she looked at me. She looked right at me! And her eyes, the look in her ey

Just as my resentment peaked and I was about to make some noise to scare her, she finally spoke. Her voice was terribly hoarse."Mom, was I wrong?"I froze abruptly, my gaze shifting to the ajar door.Theresa was already standing in the shadows. I didn't even hear her footsteps.Over the past few days, the lines on her face seemed to have deepened.Isabella's voice revealed a rare sense of confusion and helplessness."She used to be so tough. No matter how I tortured her, she'd stick her neck out and glare at me like she wanted to cut me open, looking exactly like a feral wolf cub.""I always thought she was a demon sent by that rival to claim my life. I couldn't drive her away, and no matter what I did to her, she was too stubborn to die.""But now? How could she just be gone like that?"Theresa finally stepped forward and walked in.In front of her daughter, she slowly opened her hand.Lying in her palm was a small silver cross. The chain was broken and had been carefully tied with t

For someone with the bloodline of a Mafia family, my funeral was incredibly rushed.A small urn, a tombstone without the family crest, and a few distant relatives notified to attend. No gun salutes, no black motorcade to send me off. I had none of the things that anyone with even a little status in the syndicate would receive when they passed away. The whispers from the syndicate associates buzzed in my ears like a swarm of flies."I heard she jumped into the deep water and drowned herself to save Leo.""Isabella didn't shed a single tear. The former Principessa really has a heart of stone.""I just heard someone higher up let slip that this girl was the spawn of a rival anyway. No pity in her death."Isabella, wearing a black dress, calmly shook hands with everyone, calmly cut bread for Leo, and calmly coaxed Rosie to sleep.Even when the urn containing my ashes was lowered into the ground, she just stood there without a single ripple of emotion. Her perfect indifference stung me so m

I whipped my head around just in time to see Leo miss his step, tumbling off the edge of the boardwalk.A loud splash erupted. He flailed his skinny arms wildly before the seawater swallowed him, leaving only a rapid trail of bubbles on the surface. Before my brain could even process it, my body moved.I sprinted over and jumped right in.The water was colder than I imagined, the chill seeping straight into my bones.I opened my eyes underwater and locked onto Leo, who was struggling desperately. His wide eyes were filled with terror.I swam over with all my might, supported his waist, and used every ounce of my strength to push him toward the shore. He clung to the wooden pilings by the boardwalk like driftwood, coughing and crying at the same time. But I was pushed backward by the force, swept toward the deeper, turbulent undercurrent.Seawater flooded over my head, and the surrounding world instantly became dead silent and thick. The surface refracted the swaying sunlight, looking e
