Mag-log inValen's POV.......
"Every room on this floor!" Alpha Tristan’s voice barked through the heavy wood of my suite door, sharp and impatient. "She can't have gone far, not in that state." I stood frozen in the bathroom doorway, my jaw set, my palm pressed flat against the doorframe. The small fruit knife sat motionless on the marble counter behind me. The girl was behind me, shivering violently, her wet dress dripping onto the tile. "Sir, this floor's been cleared once," a guard muffled from the hallway. "Clear it again," Tristan snapped. Not in that state. The words lingered in the quiet room like smoke. Someone had drugged her. They hadn't just tried to take her; they had set a trap. Whoever it was, it was a man who wanted her shamed, exposed, and stripped of whatever little dignity she had left. Stay away from her, I told myself, tightening my grip on the doorframe until the wood groaned. Whatever this mess is, it isn't yours. A quiet rustle came from the marble room behind me. She stepped out into the bedroom, swallowed completely by my spare white dress shirt. The thin linen was drenched, clinging relentlessly to her skin, outlining every lush, heavy curve of her body and tracing the full swell of her hips. My spine went rigid. I turned my back to her at once, my eyes locking onto the dark windowpane across the room. "There's a towel," I said coldly to the wall. "I... your shirt," she stammered, her teeth clicking together so hard the words barely made it out. "It was on the hook. I'm sorry." "Keep it." Don't look. Look at the glass. Look at the dark. My knuckles turned white where I gripped the back of an armchair. I forced a slow breath through my teeth, angling my left shoulder away from her reflection. My wolf remained dead silent, yet my own body burned, every nerve alive with an unwanted, dangerous awareness. A muffled thud echoed through the wall as a door slammed down the hall. The girl went dead still behind me. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat like a trapped bird. I didn't turn around, watching her blurred shape in the dark reflection of the window pane. She swayed, her balance completely shot from the remaining poison in her veins. Tristan’s boot steps clicked nearer in the corridor, heavy and demanding. Her small, trembling hands reached out, clutching the oversized hem of the white shirt. "P-please," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "Please what?" I said, keeping my face turned toward the dark glass. "If he... not tonight. I can't. Please." A heavy weight settled in my chest. Cold water didn't make a she-wolf beg with that kind of raw, desperate terror. She wasn't afraid of the freezing tub. She wasn't even afraid of the strange man whose room she had invaded. She was terrified of him. Her Alpha. In the dark reflection, I watched her lift a shaking wrist to wipe the water from her cheek. She tried to pull herself upright, trying to find some semblance of posture, but her knees buckled under her weight. Heavy, aggressive fists slammed against the door of the adjacent suite. "Clear! Next room!" a guard shouted. Heavy boots moved down the carpeted hallway, stopping right outside my threshold. Before I could step away, her fingers reached out and gripped my bare sleeve, holding on like a dying woman clinging to a ledge. I looked down at her small, trembling hand on my arm. A quiet, dangerous realization settled over me: I had already decided I was not going to hand her over.Osric takes a long, heavy breath, his chest rising and falling as if he is swallowing glass. He does not break eye contact with me, his old grey eyes searching my face for any flicker of hesitation. "Very well. Why?"The entire garden holds its breath. A biting gust of morning wind sweeps through the open courtyard, rustling the heavy black wool tablecloth, but no one moves. The silence is absolute, heavy enough to crush the chest. My tongue feels dry as dust against the roof of my mouth. I press my thumbnail hard into the center of my left palm, driving the sharp crescent into my skin until the stinging pain keeps my knees locked and my voice steady."I'm twenty-one," I say, my voice carrying clearly across the silent gravel, reaching every maid, guard, and elder standing in the court. "We've been promised since I was a child. We've lived under the exact same roof, attended the exact same pack banquets, and walked the exact same stone halls. In all that time, Tristan has never once t
The marks on the left side of my neck are dark, bruised, and punctured sharply at the center, trailing a stark smear of red down over my collarbone. Nobody breathes. A young maid standing near the garden hedge gasps loudly behind her hand."Gods, it's true," the maid whispers, shrinking back against the foliage."So it is," Osric says very quiet, leaning forward over the dark wood of the table, his fingers tapping once against the grain.Thessaly flares her nostrils, taking a deep, theatrical sniff of the morning air. "I can still smell it on her. A rogue's stink, all over her skin."Garrick lets out a heavy, derisive snort, shifting his weight so the chair groans beneath him. "Look at the state of her. She's not fit to be a Luna of anything.""Not Shadow Glint's," Thessaly snaps, her voice sharp as glass. "Not any pack's."They wrinkle their noses at the lingering pine-and-smoke scent of Valen, entirely misreading the power clinging to my skin as the stain of some common vagabond. I
I climb the dark basement stairs with my hand clamped hard over the left side of my neck, right under the heavy collar of my black cloak. The skin stings and throbs with every beat of my pulse. A thin smear of red has transferred to my thumb, and I wipe it quietly away against the inner lining of the wool. Underneath the heavy cloak, the sheer white off-shoulder gown rests directly over my own thick black mini gown. The heavier fabric scratches roughly against my thighs as I move, a steady, grounding reminder that I am armored underneath. The service corridors are unusually quiet. Maids flatten themselves flat against the grey stone walls as I pass, their eyes wide, their breaths held until I clear the hallway. Greta stands in the doorway of the linen room with her arms crossed over her chest, a smug, venomous grin twisting her lips as she watches me approach. She thinks the paper-thin white gown is about to expose me completely to the pack."She's actually walking in there," a maid h
I am back on my feet, pacing the narrow length of my basement room—three steps and turn, three steps and turn. The thin white gown is crushed tight in one of my trembling fists, and the metallic echo of the iron gate bell is still ringing violently inside my skull like a striking anvil. Every strike of that bell feels like a slow, deliberate countdown to my own execution, rattling through the damp floorboards and vibrating up through the cold soles of my bare feet."He won't let me out of his sight," I whisper to the empty, shadow-draped walls, my mind racing in frantic, exhausted circles. Not to the town school. Not to the local market. Not even past the wrought-iron outer gates of the estate grounds. He stands by the window and watches the front entrance like a hawk the moment he returns home from pack council business. And yet Vivian can roam the territory as she pleases... and Victoria can do whatever twisted thing she wishes without a single word of reprimand or correction. "Beca
A soft knock raps against the wood, so quiet and restrained it could easily be a trick of the draft. My head jerks up from the edge of the bed. I cross the small room in three silent strides, yank the curtain aside with a desperate hand, and confirm the thin, accusing rays of morning light slanting across the courtyard. Then the voice cuts through the door panels, flat and devoid of warmth:"Miss Aurora. Open the door."It sounds like an absolute command, not a request."Who is it?" I whisper back, my throat tight."Open it," the voice insists.I hesitate, my heart hammering against my ribs. I smooth my hair down frantically with both trembling hands, double-check that the white shirt is buried safely beneath the mattress, and straighten my spine as much as I am able before turning the iron handle.I pull the door open to reveal Greta, Lady Victoria’s personal maid. She stands in the dim corridor with her hair a brilliant, immaculate red, her uniform pristine and unwrinkled. She looks
I laid on my back on the narrow mattress, staring up at the stained ceiling tiles while my eyes burn from sheer exhaustion. A faint, dry scratch comes from somewhere above my head, rattling through the lath and plaster. I sit bolt upright, my muscles tensing for a fight. It is only a rat, or the metal of the old gravity pipes expanding in the damp basement chill. I lie back down, and my hand flies automatically to my throat, pressing flat against the pulse there.Still dark. Still dark.I turn onto my right side, the thin wool blanket scratching against my bare skin. The silence in the basement is absolute, heavy and suffocating. I turn back onto my left side, then onto my stomach, burying my face in the lumpy pillow before giving up entirely with a soft, frustrated sigh. I press the heel of my hand hard to my chest, then over my mouth to muffle my shallow breathing. My fingers drift to the edge of the cheap cotton blanket, picking mindlessly at the fraying hem until a long, grey thre
