That little rat was very well protected. I thought I was lucky when I saw her leaving the building, but she was the lucky one. I didn’t know where those police officers came from. I was going back home empty-handed. The worst part was that Calvin's deadline was almost up. But I had to find a way.

I got home and Madeline was waiting for me. She was a very useful friend, the detective's wife. He did everything she wanted, and she did everything I wanted. She was a religious zealot, always buried in church, but she was a sinner - a useful sinner. She gossiped about everyone's life in this city, knew everyone's dirty secrets. Well, almost everyone's, because she thought I was a saint. Everyone in this city thought I was a devout woman; sometimes I just wanted to laugh.
