FIVE YEARS LATER

“And the Brand of the Year award goes to…” the announcer paused, a brief suspense stretching across the hall, “…AURELIA FASHIONS, by Aurelia Sterling.”

For a split second, everything felt quiet.

Then the room broke into applause.

The sound rose around me—loud, overwhelming, echoing through the grand hall. Lights flickered. Cameras turned. Faces shifted in my direction.

I didn’t move immediately.

Then I felt a small hand tighten around mine.

“Mummy…”

I looked down.

The night air moved softly through the garden, carrying the scent of flowers while three grown men sat around me pretending they hadn’t hidden life-changing information from me for an entire year.I stared at them in disbelief.Especially Hayes. He looked completely calm sitting there with his glass in hand like this was nothing. “How long were you planning to hide it from me?” I finally asked.Nobody answered immediately. Then Hayes spoke quietly. “Forever if I could.”I almost laughed. But this wasn’t funny. My grip tightened slightly around my glass.“I was the one who got stolen,” I said. “I was supposed to know the truth.”They were silent. None of them argued with me.That somehow made it worse.I exhaled slowly and leaned back in my chair, staring up at the dark sky for a second.“What difference would it even make now?” I asked quietly. The whiskey burned slightly at the back of my throat as I took another sip.“I know the truth now, but what exactly am I supposed to do with

The shower did nothing to calm me down.By the time I stepped out of the bathroom and changed into softer clothes, my thoughts still felt tangled.Too heavy in my head.I climbed into bed anyway, pulling the blanket over myself as I stared blankly at the ceiling. My life had finally become peaceful.I had Leo.My brothers. My company.A home that finally felt real. And now suddenly, the past kept forcing its way back into my life like it refused to leave me alone.First Grace Mercer. Then Dominic.I shut my eyes tightly. Why now?Why did the universe suddenly decide I hadn’t suffered enough already?A knock sounded against my bedroom door.I exhaled slowly.Of course. One of them.I didn’t want to talk right now.Didn’t want questions.Didn’t want concern.I considered ignoring the knock completely. But that wouldn’t stop them from walking in when I didn't answer.“Come in.”The door opened seconds later.Pierce walked in holding two glasses of whiskey.“Drinks?” he asked casually.I

Dominic stood up slowly from his crouched position. For one brief second, neither of us spoke. The air between us felt heavy.Tense.Hayes shifted first. He turned away immediately with Leo still in his arms and started heading toward the car like he already knew there was no point staying here any longer.I stayed where I was for another second, staring at Dominic.Anger burned so hot inside me that my chest felt tight. But this wasn’t the place. Not in front of Leo.Not in front of a school filled with children and parents watching us.So I turned around and started walking away.“Aurelia—”I ignored him.My heels clicked sharply against the pavement as I continued toward the car.“Aurelia, please—” His voice was louder this time.Loud enough that I noticed a few parents glance in our direction. My jaw tightened instantly. But I didn’t stop walking.Didn’t look back.By the time I reached the car, Hayes had already settled Leo inside.I entered immediately and shut the door hard eno

I shut my eyes briefly.Three years old.I was three years old when they took me from my family because they wanted a child. Then when they finally had one of their own, they threw me away emotionally because I didn't matter to them anymore.Something sharp burned painfully in my chest.Hayes’s voice grew colder.“But I had no softness left in me to forgive them.”I looked at him again.“They caused our mother’s death. She died because she thought she had lost you.”His voice cracked slightly at that sentence for the first time.Very slightly. But I heard it.“I can’t forgive that.”My throat tightened painfully.“So when their company started falling apart…” he continued, “I bought everything.”His eyes stayed completely emotionless now.“They took you from us.” A pause. “There was nothing else left to take from them. So I took their company.”I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t even think properly.Everything inside me felt tangled.Because a part of me wanted to hate them.Another part alre

I couldn’t feel my legs anymore. The office suddenly felt too cold.Hayes looked at me quietly from across the desk before speaking again.“Can you please sit?”My legs still felt strange beneath me.“I’ll tell you everything.”Only then did I manage to sit back down slowly. The chair felt harder than before.Hayes leaned back slightly and exhaled through his nose before speaking.“I found out about it a year ago.”I stared at him without blinking.“A part of me always knew something was wrong about the day we lost you,” he continued calmly. “But five years ago… after we found you again… I wasn’t thinking clearly.”His jaw tightened slightly.“You had already gone through too much. You were trying to heal. We all were.” His fingers tapped lightly against the desk once. “And honestly, I wasn’t in the right state of mind either.”I swallowed slowly. My chest still felt tight.“But deep down,” he continued, “I knew we didn’t just lose you.”His eyes lifted to mine.“You were stolen.”The

The drive to STERLINGS headquarters felt longer than usual.I sat in the backseat quietly, my fingers resting against my knee while London moved past the window in a blur of gray buildings and flashing traffic lights.Mia had insisted on following me at first. But I told her it was a personal meeting with my brother. My head rested briefly against the seat as Grace’s face entered my mind again. The tears. The shaking hands. The exhaustion in her eyes. The baby.I didn’t even know if the baby was a boy or a girl. That realization sat strangely in my chest. I’d been too angry to notice. Too angry to care. Too busy counting every reason I shouldn't care.I exhaled sharply and looked back out the window.No.I wasn’t doing this.I wasn’t about to suddenly become emotional over people who abandoned me years ago.The car finally came to a stop in front of the company building. The building stood tall against the cloudy sky, cold glass reflecting the city around it.Power.That was the first
