Moonlight fractured across the ancient branches, casting pale ribbons of silver that swayed with the restless wind. Serenya pressed her hand against the moss-covered trunk, listening—not with her ears, but with the fragile part of her heart that had always been attuned to the strange murmurs of the Whispering Forest. Legends said the trees remembered everything: blood spilled on their roots, vows whispered beneath their canopy, betrayals etched into bark and bone.

And tonight, those whispers were louder.

Kaelen walked a few paces behind her, his dark cloak blending with the shadows, his presence steady as a heartbeat. Yet even his silent confidence seemed fragile here. “The path grows narrower,” he muttered, eyes flicking toward the tangled undergrowth. “Almost as though the forest itself doesn’t want us to pass.”

“It doesn’t,” Serenya answered softly. She touched the emerald pendant around her neck—the only relic of her hidden bloodline, the mark of her claim to the throne. “The forest knows what I carry.”

A hush settled between them. For months, their journey had taken them through burned villages, across mountains blackened by war, into councils rife with betrayal. But the Whispering Forest was different. It was not an enemy made of steel or schemes. It was alive, ancient, watching.

Behind them, Darian Crestfall, sworn knight and ever-tormented by duty, tightened his grip on his blade. His gaze flicked between Serenya and Kaelen—between the woman he had silently loved and the shadowed protector she had chosen to trust. “We shouldn’t linger,” Darian said firmly. “The Duke’s spies will be hunting us. If not men, then beasts.”

Serenya exhaled, forcing calm into her voice. “We have no choice. The oracle’s words led us here. The forest holds the secret to the Starborn Legacy. If I am to unite the kingdoms, I must find it.”

A whisper swept through the branches then, almost like laughter, almost like warning. Kaelen stiffened. Darian drew his sword. Serenya’s pendant pulsed faintly, glowing as though answering the call.

They were not alone.

The deeper they walked, the more the forest pressed inward. Trunks curved unnaturally, branches wove into arches that resembled cages, and the ground itself seemed to shift. Serenya remembered her tutor’s stories: the forest was a labyrinth designed to test the worth of those who entered. Some never emerged.

“What do you hear?” Kaelen asked suddenly, breaking her reverie.

She swallowed. “Names.”

“Whose?”

“Mine,” she whispered, and then shivered. Because it wasn’t just her name. It was her father’s. Her mother’s. Names of kings and queens long dead, spoken as if the trees themselves demanded their debts be paid in blood.

Darian’s jaw tightened. “We’re leaving. Now.”

But Serenya shook her head. “No. If we turn back now, all we’ve endured—the betrayals, the sacrifices—will mean nothing.” She pressed forward, ignoring the way her legs trembled.

The whispers grew louder. Louder, until they no longer sounded like leaves in the wind but voices pressing against her skull. You are not worthy. You are the child of lies. Shadows cannot rule the stars.

She staggered, clutching her head. Kaelen caught her before she fell, his arms steady around her trembling frame. His voice was sharp, cutting through the fog. “Fight it, Serenya. Don’t let the forest decide your fate.”

She looked up at him, meeting the intensity of his storm-gray eyes. A part of her wanted to collapse into that safety. But another part—the heiress, the hidden queen—knew she could not. “It has to test me,” she gasped. “It has to see who I am.”

They reached a clearing at last. At its center stood a monolith of black stone, carved with runes that pulsed like embers. Around it, the trees bowed inward, their branches whispering in unison. The sound was no longer scattered—it was a chorus, a verdict being prepared.

Serenya stepped forward.

Kaelen caught her wrist. “Wait. You don’t know what it will demand.”

“I do,” she said, surprising even herself. She pulled free, walking toward the stone as the whispers rose into a storm. The air thickened, pressing against her lungs. Every step was agony, as though the forest demanded pieces of her strength with every breath.

When she touched the monolith, the whispers fell silent.

And then the vision began.

She was standing in a grand hall, torches burning with blue flame. Before her, a throne of silver and bone gleamed. And upon it sat Thalric Veynor, the ruthless duke, wearing her father’s crown. His smile was cruel.

“You cannot escape me,” he said. “Even the forest bends to my will. Claim your throne if you dare, but know this: everything you love will burn.”

She turned—and saw Kaelen, bloodied, chained to the foot of the throne. Darian lay lifeless at his side. The sight shattered her, pain twisting through her heart like a blade.

“No,” she whispered, tears streaking her vision. “This isn’t real.”

But a voice echoed all around her, deeper than the duke’s, older than kings. It will be real, unless you accept who you are. Deny the shadows. Embrace the stars. Or watch the world end.

The vision collapsed. She was back in the clearing, gasping, tears staining her cheeks. Kaelen gripped her shoulders, worry etched into his face. “Serenya! What did you see?”

She opened her mouth, but the forest answered for her.

The monolith pulsed, and a single line of runes ignited with searing light: Only when the heart chooses shall the crown endure.

Darian stepped closer, his blade still unsheathed. “What does it mean?”

Serenya’s voice trembled as she spoke. “It means the crown cannot be won by blood or war. It will only endure if I choose with my heart… not just for the kingdom, but for myself.”

Her gaze flicked—first to Kaelen, the protector whose secrets both steadied and frightened her, then to Darian, whose loyalty had never faltered despite his silent torment. The forest had laid her choice bare. Love was no longer separate from duty. It was the very key to the throne.

The realization left her breathless.

Kaelen seemed to understand. His jaw tightened, but he said nothing, only stepped protectively in front of her as the whispers stirred again.

But this time, the voices were not warnings. They were chants. Encouragement.

Rise, Starborn. Rise.

And then the forest screamed.

From the shadows between the trees emerged figures cloaked in black, their eyes glinting red. Thalric’s assassins. At least a dozen, blades gleaming, surrounding the clearing like wolves circling prey.

Darian moved instantly, sword flashing as he stood at Serenya’s side. Kaelen drew his twin daggers, his stance fluid, deadly.

“Run,” Darian hissed to Serenya.

“No.” She raised her chin, clutching the glowing pendant. The whispers surged, and for the first time, they weren’t voices of doubt. They were voices of power. Of blood. Of stars. She could feel the forest bending to her will.

She spread her arms. The pendant blazed like fire. The assassins hesitated. Shadows recoiled.

Kaelen shot her a look of astonishment. “What are you—”

Before he could finish, the trees themselves moved. Branches whipped out like serpents, striking at the assassins, tearing weapons from their hands. The ground shook, roots rising like barriers to protect her.

Serenya’s voice rang clear, filled with power not entirely her own. “I am Serenya Vale, heir of starlight and shadow. This forest is mine to command!”

The assassins faltered, fear flashing across their faces.

But before victory could settle, a single arrow flew from the darkness. It pierced the glowing pendant around her neck, shattering it into fragments of light.

Serenya screamed as the forest convulsed. The whispers rose to a deafening roar.

And then—silence.

The last thing she saw before darkness claimed her was Kaelen’s face, pale with horror, and Darian’s shout echoing her name.
