Chapter 3

Author: Tea Everywhere
Tears streamed down my face without stopping.

The house was still packed with all the things it had always held, yet I felt completely hollow inside.

I wanted to leave. I wanted to go back to my family.

My family might have been a minor branch that depended on Jack’s, but we had earned our own place and standing.

Then I remembered the embroidered family insignia my mother had left me. I had kept it tucked away in the wardrobe in my bedroom.

It was a symbol of the Stanton family. When messages had to be sent over long distances, the insignia was safer than a written letter.

Every family member had a unique embroidered design registered in the family records. Whenever we needed assistance, it served as proof of our identity and our right to call upon the family.

I rushed back to my bedroom and began tearing through everything.

No matter how hard I searched, I could not find it.

I could let go of the real estate division I built for Jack, but I could not lose the insignia my mother had left me.

I immediately went looking for Jack, so frantic that fresh tears spilled from my eyes.

“There’s a spy! The insignia my mother left me is gone. It’s my proof of identity, the thing that allows me to call on my family when I need their help. If it fell into a spy’s hands, do you have any idea what could happen?”

Jack stood by the window, pulling the curtains closed for Layla. He turned to look at me.

“There’s no spy. I gave your insignia to Layla. Her family isn’t as powerful as yours. She has nothing to rely on, so I had to give her your insignia. It’s the only way she can have the backing she needs to move forward without fear.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

That insignia represented the strength and protection my family had given me. He had taken it without asking and handed it to someone else.

I thought he rescued that girl because he pitied her, like someone rescuing a stray kitten or puppy.

I realized I had been wrong. No matter how much he pitied her, he would not have done all this for her.

His feelings for her were more than pity. It was love. Love had made this cold, indifferent man show warmth to someone else.

I grabbed Layla by the collar, my eyes burning red.

“That was something my mother left me! If you want your family’s support, then go ask your own parents for it!”

Layla’s eyes filled with tears. Her face crumpled with hurt.

“You know my parents are trying to force me into an arranged marriage. You know my family isn’t as powerful as yours, and yet you still choose to rub it in my face. Just because I was born into a terrible family, does that mean I don’t deserve to have someone stand behind me?”

At that moment, I understood. When a person was pushed far enough, they really could laugh instead of cry.

“I never said you didn’t deserve support. If you want that kind of backing, then earn it yourself. What does stealing something that belongs to me have to do with that?”

“Mr. Parker… look what she’s doing.”

Layla’s eyes were red. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she clung to Jack and acted pitiful.

Jack immediately pulled her behind him. When he looked at me again, all the warmth in his expression was gone.

“Eleanor, your family has always supported you in whatever you wanted to do. Even without that insignia, if you asked them for help, would they really turn you down?

“Layla is different. Her family only sees her as a bargaining chip. No one is willing to stand up for her or help her on her terms. So what would it hurt you to give her a little?

“Besides, once you and I are together, are you really going to be short on support?”

Whatever tiny bit of hope I had left for Jack finally shattered. I bit down hard on my lip.

This much support? No matter how small it was, that support belonged to me. It came from my own family. Compared to the promises Jack kept dangling in front of me, I knew exactly which one I could rely on.

I began searching through Layla’s room, turning everything upside down. No matter how thoroughly I searched, I could not find my insignia.

Exhausted, I sank to the floor. Tears streamed down my face.

Layla looked down at me, barely able to hide her satisfaction.

“Can’t find it, can you? This is the source of my confidence. Mr. Parker gave it to me, so of course I had to hide something this important somewhere safe. I wouldn’t want some outsider stealing it, after all.”

The smile on her face cut deeper than any words could have.

I grabbed the nearest book and swung it toward her face. Jack lunged forward and pulled Layla out of the way, taking the blow himself.

The corner of the book struck his back. A streak of bright red blood slowly seeped through his shirt.

The blood was so red, even redder than the blood he spilled years ago when he took that dangerous job just to buy me that necklace.

All the strength drained from my body. I collapsed onto the floor, tears falling freely as I lay there, unable to move.

Dead leaves spiraled up from the ground, caught in the wind and scattered across Jack’s face.He reached for them instinctively, but there was nothing there to catch. He had already begun to unravel the moment he realized Eleanor was gone.He searched the house from the highest floor to the lowest. There was nothing. He sent his men to trace her whereabouts, but they could not find her.He went to her friends, one after another. Not a single person would tell him where she was. He went to Eleanor’s family himself, only to be turned away at the door.In the end, he had to invoke his authority as Godfather just to get inside. He had been frantic to find her, to tell her that he had divorced Layla, to finally give her the words she had waited eight years to hear.“Eleanor, let’s get married.”He had been so consumed by the thought of finding her that he had forgotten one thing. Today was her grandmother’s funeral.Jack suddenly began striking himself across the face.“I’m sorry,

I quietly stayed by my grandmother’s side, wiping her body clean and helping dress her in her burial clothes. My mother noticed how pale I looked but did not ask any questions. She simply pulled me into a quiet embrace. My father stood nearby.“What happened between you and Mr. Parker…”I calmly told everyone what had happened between Jack and Layla. I was not just telling my family. I was telling my grandmother, too.Everyone in the family was stunned. They could not understand how Godfather could have done something so ridiculous. How could he treat marriage like a game just to protect some girl he barely knew, completely disregarding the woman who had been with him for eight years?“Eleanor… We didn’t know the truth before. We were wrong to blame you.”I carefully straightened the hem of my grandmother’s burial clothes one last time before looking up at everyone.“I’ve already left him. Maybe if I had left sooner, Grandma wouldn’t have been dragged into this because of me.

The doctor said Eleanor was sleeping peacefully for now and might sleep all the way until morning.Jack finally stopped keeping vigil at her bedside. He had all of Layla’s belongings packed up and thrown out of the house. Then he personally rearranged everything inside, putting each item back exactly the way Eleanor liked it.Only then did he sink onto the sofa to rest. For the first time, he felt strangely alone. The house was too quiet.Usually, whether he read the newspaper on the sofa or listened to his men give their reports in the study, Eleanor always had a way of appearing beside him without him even noticing. She would happily bring him some fruit, hum and dance around the room, then cling to him and beg him to hold her.He always complained that she was too noisy. Yet whenever he worked, he could never resist sneaking glances at her.It had been eight years, and Eleanor was still the same girl he met all those years ago. She was lively, bright, and impossibly endearing

Before Eleanor could answer, the doctor came back in and gave her another sedative. She was far too agitated, and the doctor feared her condition would deteriorate. Once the medication took effect, she finally drifted into sleep.Even then, she could not rest peacefully. Her brows stayed tightly furrowed, and every so often, she murmured something in her sleep. Her voice was hoarse, heavy with a despair so deep it seemed to seep into every word. Sometimes her murmurs were too faint to understand. Sometimes she called for her grandmother. Other times, she whispered for the baby she had already lost. The two people she loved most in this world had been taken from her at once.Watching Eleanor struggle through her nightmares, Jack felt something twist painfully in his chest. He gently cupped her cheek, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath his palm. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he murmured, “Eleanor, I’ll marry you.”His phone buzzed. Jack glanced at the message, and i

When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the room Jack and I shared. The first thing that came to mind was my grandmother. My parents had always been busy when I was little, and my grandmother had been the one who spent most of my childhood by my side.I had to go home. I had to see her one last time.Still groggy, I tried to push myself upright. The moment I moved my hand, a sharp sting shot through the back of it.I looked down and pulled the IV needle from my hand. Blood immediately spilled from the puncture wound, and I sucked in a sharp breath.Jack jolted awake in the chair beside me, as though sensing something was wrong. He rushed over and pressed his hand over the wound. “Doctor! Doctor!”The doctor, who had been waiting outside, hurried in. After stopping the bleeding, he inserted another IV into my other hand and started another infusion.I cried and tried to get out of bed, but Jack pulled me tightly into his arms, just like he used to hold me when he loved me.

I packed my belongings and moved back in with my family.Jack sent people to look for me several times, trying to convince me to come home. I refused every time.I reported the missing insignia to my family. My mother promised to embroider a new one for me with a different pattern. After a great deal of effort, we finally managed to officially report the original insignia as lost within the family registry. My mother paid the price for it. People in the family looked at her with contempt.“How useless. She couldn’t even keep her own family insignia safe.”My heart ached knowing my mother had to painstakingly make another one for me. It hurt even more knowing she had to endure everyone’s disdain on my behalf, day after day, until the constant stress left her suffering from ringing in her ears. When I went to Layla again and demanded that she return my insignia, she sent me a photo instead. In the photo, she was drinking with the leaders of several districts, looking completely at
