Chapter 20

Author: Candied Hawthorn
Logan was growing impatient. He strode across the lounge toward Helen and demanded, "Where have you sent Xena?"

"Xena is dead."

Helen turned to face him, her expression more serious than I'd ever seen it.

For a moment, I thought Logan actually believed her. Then his face hardened.

"Mrs. Shaw, my patience is running out!"

"I know you don't believe us," Helen replied calmly. She pointed toward the middle of the lounge. "Logan, there's something underneath that floor tile."

I saw his pupils contrac

I went to a store and picked out a gift for Mr. Grant: his favorite coffee. When I visited him that day, I happened to notice something old sitting on his desk.It was a diary, its pages yellowed with age but clearly well cared for.Mr. Grant rose to greet me as soon as I arrived."Yara, what brings you here?"I glanced curiously at the diary, and he seemed to notice my interest."It belonged to someone from my past."I nodded without asking any more questions. After we'd chatted for a while, he suddenly asked, "Is everything all right? Have you run into some kind of trouble?"I shook my head, then finally asked the question that had been on my mind for so long."Mr. Grant, have you been waiting all these years for a woman you love?"He looked at me and nodded sadly."Yes. I've been waiting for her all this time."A bitter smile crossed his face."Though I know she'll never come back. We missed our chance, and there's nothing I can do about that now."The sadness in his eyes was unmist

My name is Yara Shaw, and I'm an orphan. I grew up in an orphanage, surrounded by kind women who taught me to read, write, understand right from wrong, and approach life with a positive attitude. As I grew older, the orphanage could no longer afford to pay for my education. Fortunately, a man stepped in and offered to sponsor me.One of the women who looked after me often reminded me how lucky I was."Yara, if it weren't for Mr. Grant, there's no way we could afford to send you to college. Education is especially important for girls these days. The more you learn, the better you'll understand the world and the less likely you are to be taken advantage of."I'd met Mr. Grant several times, and he always struck me as a tired, world-weary man.He was incredibly kind to me, though. He often encouraged me to pursue whatever I was passionate about and assured me that I could turn to him whenever I needed anything. He promised to help me unconditionally.Still, I never approached him to ask f

Three days later, Logan showed up at our house with Nathan, who was carrying several bags of gifts.Robert answered the door, and the moment he saw Logan, he tried to slam it shut. Logan was quicker, wedging himself in the doorway before Robert could close it."Mr. Shaw.""What are you doing here?"Robert glared at him with undisguised hatred, his hands curling into fists at his sides.Hearing the commotion, Ethan hurried over from the kitchen."Dad, who's there?""Some salesman."Robert's expression darkened as he put his weight against the door, trying to force it shut.I floated beside him, cheering him on."Come on, Dad! Push harder! You can do it!""Oh, sweetheart, your dad isn't a young man anymore," Helen chided affectionately from beside me.Before she'd even finished speaking, Logan overpowered Robert and forced his way into the living room. The moment Ethan saw him, his expression turned cold."Get out!"Logan ignored him and shamelessly approached Robert. Nathan, meanwhile,

"Last night, Yvonne suddenly went berserk at the hospital. She started screaming about ghosts, then dropped to her knees and confessed to every terrible thing she'd done. That's how the police finally learned she was responsible for Ms. Shaw's death. Her confession gave them the evidence they needed to establish her guilt."I raised my eyebrows, unable to suppress a smile.Of course Yvonne was terrified. I'd paid her a little visit myself.I'd knocked things off the table to keep her awake, and after losing so much sleep, she'd become so disoriented that she genuinely believed she was being haunted. Having witnessed Helen's death firsthand, she was already deeply traumatized. Eventually, she couldn't take it anymore and confessed to everything."What about her ashes? Have you found them?" Logan asked, drawing my attention back to the conversation.I was curious about that myself. How had my ashes disappeared? Surely no one was sick enough to steal someone's remains?Nathan shook his h

"Yes."Nathan's voice was heavy, his eyes filled with sadness.Logan took a long swig of alcohol before asking another question."Then what about all those things she supposedly did to Yvonne? Were they lies, too?""Yes."Nathan placed the entire stack of documents he'd brought on the table in front of Logan."Mr. Grant, Yvonne was never disqualified from that international ballet competition."Logan looked up at him, his voice hoarse."Then why... why didn't she compete?""She did. She just wasn't good enough. The judges eliminated her in the first round."I couldn't help laughing bitterly as I listened.Exactly! That was what had really happened!Yet Logan had been so full of shit that he'd believed every word Yvonne told him. He'd convinced himself that I'd somehow cost her the opportunity to compete and ruined her chance of becoming the country's greatest ballerina.Logan stared at Nathan in disbelief."You're telling me I fell for such an obvious lie? For three whole years?"Natha

I'd never seen Logan lose control like this before.Helen stood beside me, watching him with a cold smile."Of course she knows. She's the one who murdered Xena!""I... I don't know anything!"Yvonne tried to back away, but Logan's grip on her wrist kept her from moving.Logan was a smart man. He should have figured out long ago that I was dead. How else could someone disappear for three whole years without leaving a single trace of their existence? His eyes were cold as he continued pressing Yvonne for answers."Did you really kill her?""No!"Yvonne struggled to maintain her composure, but when her gaze fell on Helen's body, particularly her eyes, which were still open, she shuddered violently. Before Logan could question her further, the police arrived. Officers dispersed the crowd and took statements from everyone involved before eventually taking both Logan and Yvonne away.Helen and I exchanged a glance, both relieved.Whatever happened next, at least their detention would buy Ro
