Chapter 2

Autor: Sweetie Moore
Over time, Portia grew disgruntled with me as well. I suspected that she would have spoken with my parents and called off the engagement if it weren't for my family's background.

I only loved Caleb, and naturally, I couldn't care less what Portia thought of me.

But while everyone was watching us intently in the hospital room earlier, Caleb had held me close and clutched my arm with his large, firm hand. The anesthesia had left him delirious, and I blushed crimson when he told me he couldn't leave me and said all those sweet nothings.

He was never one for sweet talk. I thought he might have been putting on a solemn front after I saw how endearing he could be under the influence of anesthesia, but the next second, Naomi's name slipped off his tongue.

At that moment, exhaustion overwhelmed me. I was done being a part of their twisted game.

Portia was still bombarding me with calls, the interval between each call shorter than the last. I figured Naomi must be at the hospital now, so I dismissed the calls and sent Portia a curt text instead.

"Feel free to direct any questions you have to Caleb once he comes to. Also, I don't think I'm cut out to be Caleb's wife. We should talk about calling off the engagement once he feels better."

After that, I switched off my phone.

Upon arriving at the private dining room, I saw that the cake and food I'd ordered remained untouched. My best friend, Enid Zimmerman, was bewildered.

"What's going on? What are you doing back here? Didn't you say you were going to look after your injured fiance?"

"His wife's looking after him."

"His what?" Enid scratched the back of her head. "Woah, rewind. You just lost me."

I told her what happened at the hospital and the things Caleb had said under the influence of anesthesia.

After she was brought up to speed, she couldn't resist letting loose a torrent of curses. Then, she eyed me with sympathy.

"Well, look at it this way—you've been using this guy for free for so long, it's about time you find someone else. There are plenty of men out there for you to choose from.

"You must be hungry. The food's gone cold. I'll get the kitchen to whip up a fresh spread."

I was, indeed, hungry and exhausted after enduring Portia's scolding outside the operating room. "It'll be a waste to dump all this food. Let's just reheat it. But throw out that cake."

Back when I learned that Caleb would be showing up at my birthday party, I searched the entire city and finally found the elderflower cake he loved. Alas, it was only during his delirious speech back at the hospital that I discovered elderflower wasn't his favorite cake flavor, but Naomi's.

That was far from all, though. Naomi's presence seemed to haunt every detail of our relationship.

Our villa had been decorated in Naomi's preferred classical style. Caleb hated seeing me in a red dress because I'd resemble Naomi too much for his comfort. Even the vacant room in the villa was frequently straightened up so it would be ready if Naomi came home.

I felt like I'd been made the butt of their twisted joke.

After some thought, I sent Caleb a text. "Hey, Mr. Lifesaver, call me when you wake up so we can talk about calling off the engagement."

I expected him to fool around with Naomi after he woke up and take his time replying to my text, but surprisingly, I got his call almost right away.

I'd just put the call through when I heard a self-righteous voice on the other end. "I'm sorry, Ms. Carter, but Caleb is still asleep. I heard about what happened in the hospital. Please rest assured that nothing is going on between us, so don't get the wrong idea.

"I didn't return from abroad with the intention of stealing Caleb from you. We just couldn't move on from our feelings for each other. But please believe me when I say I don't want to come between you two.

"Also, I should tell you that it's pretty heartless of you to abandon Caleb here in critical condition after his surgery. You're his fiancee, and no man would appreciate a move like that. I'll delete your text from earlier, so you—"

Enid lost her patience and immediately snatched the phone from me. "Excuse me? Are you sick in the head? Mr. Lifesaver got stabbed because he was trying to save you, remember? How dare you talk down to Sonia like she's the one at fault?"

She was met with a two-beat silence, then a curt, "It's rude of her to pass the phone to someone else mid-call. I don't need to explain myself to you."

Naomi hung up after that, and the dial tone sounded in my ear. Enid tried to call Caleb's number again, but the call was rejected.

Only then did Portia realize she'd practically messed with the wrong person. She was so badly rattled that she frantically turned to apologize to Enid. However, Enid ignored her and left without a backward glance. My parents followed suit, and the onlookers left, satisfied with the show they'd just watched.Portia collapsed with a dazed look in her eyes. She never expected to become the lead character of her own show.I glanced sidelong at Caleb as he quickly caught and steadied Portia, then turned and left.Caleb hurried to catch up to me. He grabbed me by the arm and said shakily, "I'm sorry, Sonia. I was wrong. Please forgive me one last time. My mom's too old to deal with something as drastic as this."He looked so small and defeated that, for a moment, I was dazed.Years ago, while I was abroad with my parents to evaluate a potential business partner, I'd sneaked out and strolled around on a whim. Along the way, I ran into a young and good-looking vagabond. He was filthy, bu

Portia was stumped. Although she'd tried to cover up the incident, plenty of people at the hospital had already seen it.She slapped Caleb hard across the face, then pointed at him with a shaky finger. "Get on your knees right now!"Caleb didn't dare to utter a word and obeyed.Portia flashed me an appeasing smile. "Sonia, I really didn't know the details of that incident, but I've already punished Caleb for you. If you don't think that's enough, perhaps I should slap myself to make it up to you."She was about to do just that when my parents stopped her. If Portia truly hurt herself because of me, there was no telling what her entourage might say about me once they left.Mom saw through Portia's intentions and said, "This is the first time Sonia's ever been in a serious relationship, and she's made her fair share of mistakes. As their elders, our place is not to meddle with our children's love affairs."But Caleb has been manipulating and fabricating records in our families' bus

I turned to see a dignified middle-aged man linking arms with an elegant woman in a sapphire-blue dress. They walked toward us slowly and gracefully.I froze. "Mom? Dad? What are you doing here?""Sorry, Sonia. I told them." Enid came out from behind them and leaned close to my ear, whispering, "They saw everything earlier, and I caught them up to speed on some of the stuff that happened before. "Distress etched itself on my features. Enid seemed to understand my concerns and reassured me. "Don't worry. Marie's condition has been under control for a year, but something happened that kept her from telling you."After that, she gave me a thumbs-up and said approvingly, "By the way, you rocked earlier."My mom, Marie Rosewell, had tear-filled eyes as she pulled me into her arms. "I'm so sorry that you went through so much, Sonia. Silly child, if we hadn't called Enid, we wouldn't have known how hard things have been for you!"For the last few years, I hadn't wanted my parents to wo

A crimson flush spread across Caleb's face.Naomi frantically dodged the doctors as they tried to drag her into the ambulance. "I don't need your false charity! There's no way you'll be this nice to me! Caleb, help me!"But Caleb had problems of his own to worry about. The members of the medical team attempted to grab Naomi by force and get her into the ambulance, but she clung to Caleb stubbornly, refusing to let go.Caleb grew anxious and barked an order at me. "Make them let Naomi go, Sonia!""Sure. I'll let her go, then submit this evidence to the court." I jerked my chin at the documents in his hand. For the last half a month, Enid had been helping me with my investigation. The evidence was airtight, and there was physical proof to back it up. I was certain to win if I took them to court. At this point, Caleb visibly backed down. He gritted his teeth, then pried Naomi's hands off his sleeve. "Naomi, go with them to the hospital and let the doctors examine you properly, alr

The airport incident had only strengthened my parents' resolve. Even Caleb suggested that I step away from handling company affairs altogether."You ran into trouble just going abroad to negotiate a business deal. Who knows what might happen to you next? It makes me uneasy. I can't risk you becoming leverage for our business rivals."I was hesitant at first. On the one hand, the company was my parents' blood, sweat, and tears, and I didn't want to hand it over to Caleb so easily. On the other hand, I wanted to share Caleb's burden.Caleb assigned me to a less taxing role to reassure and placate me.I didn't like the idea, but my parents seemed relieved by it, and Caleb was happy to oblige. Even Portia had given her approval, though she expressed her concern that Caleb was doing far too much work.In the end, I relented. However, it was only after I reviewed the business deals from the last half a month that I discovered something amiss. It was no wonder Portia had agreed with my

Caleb ran toward Naomi, panic clear on his face. He pulled her into his arms and carefully put his hand over her stomach, rubbing gentle circles on it. His expression was tender and full of concern.Who would've thought he was capable of such consideration?I remembered a time when I fell sick and had an episode of gastritis. The medicine hadn't worked, and I was in so much pain that I could hardly stand straight. I asked Caleb to take me to the hospital, but he was in a rush to meet Naomi for their date and turned me down. He didn't even bat an eye."Surely it's not as painful as you make it look. You were fine before. Besides, if I weren't home today, I doubt you'd be in so much pain that you couldn't go to the hospital yourself."He left me with those words and headed out, not forgetting the present he'd bought Naomi. After that, I called 911 when the pain became unbearable. I'd already passed out by the time the ambulance pulled up.When I got to the hospital, they discovere
