Chapter 4

Autor: Sweetie Moore
Enid's father often gave her an angry lecture because of this. "You won't give our family business the time of day, but you'll help an outsider with hers? You're turning your back on us, young lady! Are you trying to kill me here?"

"Sonia's not an outsider. Her business is mine," Enid would say flippantly.

I hadn't realized before, but looking back, Enid was far better at problem-solving than Caleb. She could work through any prickly issue and resolve it with a snap of her fingers. She was on par with, if not more brilliant than, Caleb in that regard.

Half a month passed. I spent each day poring over work, and I'd almost forgotten about Caleb until he called Enid.

Enid so happened to be busy setting up the grill and tossed her phone at me. I thought it was the food delivery guy at first, but when I answered, Caleb's deep, magnetic voice came from the other end of the line.

"Hello? Is Sonia there? Could you please pass her the phone?" He was as courteous as ever.

My brows furrowed. "How did you get Enid's number?"

Enid had always been somewhat critical of Caleb, so they never exchanged contacts.

"I had someone dig it up for me," Caleb replied smugly, as if he were doing me a favor by going to great lengths to find me.

I snorted. I had to admit, I never thought he'd look for me.

Once, I went abroad on a work trip for our companies' business collaboration, only to lose my wallet on the return trip. I was also stranded at the airport because there'd been a problem with my passport.

When I called Caleb for help, he rejected my call without hesitation. My phone died just as I was about to call him again. I didn't speak the local language and couldn't find help. I ended up spending a night at the airport.

Fortunately, Enid got worried when I didn't return home as scheduled and asked Caleb where I was. After that, she hurried abroad and brought me home.

Later, Caleb explained that he had an emergency when I called him for help. He claimed he tried to call me back, but my phone was switched off. I only found out he'd brought Naomi back to our new place after I looked into what he'd been doing.

While I was stranded, scared, and hungry beneath an overpass outside the airport, he and Naomi were getting warm and cozy at home, eating fruit and playing games on my new console.

The reasons he gave me were barely more than lame excuses. He simply didn't care about me enough.

"You've been staying at Enid's for long enough now, haven't you? When are you coming back?"

I might have imagined it, but I thought I heard mild exasperation and affection in his tone.

"Mom told me what happened at the hospital. The anesthesia hadn't worn off, and I was spewing nonsense. Don't take it personally, Sonia. Naomi and I are just friends, and we don't plan on getting back together. Don't get the wrong idea.

"You stayed away the entire time while I was unwell. Naomi was the one who took care of me, but you're my fiancee at the end of the day. If word about this gets out, I don't care how it reflects on me, but it'll look bad for you."

I laughed, then scoffed. "Don't make this about me. You nearly died in the hospital because you took a knife for your first love. If word of this gets out, it'll have nothing to do with me."

Caleb seemed to go still at my retort. "Are you still jealous of Naomi? You have no idea what it was like to be caught up in that kind of danger. If I hadn't stepped in—"

I cut him off. "Stop. I'm not interested in how you saved a damsel in distress."

"You—"

Before he could finish speaking, I heard Naomi's soft voice in the background. "Don't get worked up, Caleb. Maybe I should explain things to Ms. Carter."

Caleb sighed. "Sonia, I've already apologized to you. Besides, you and Enid have already given Naomi a piece of your mind. She even cried for days because of what you two said. Let's just say we're even."

"Alright, then. We're even." I wasn't angry. I even let out a curt laugh. I didn't bother waiting for him to speak before continuing, "Our families should talk about calling off the engagement. We'll be even that way."

Caleb's words were edged with frost. "I'm giving you one last chance, Sonia. Stop being unreasonable. If you're angry because my mom slapped you in a fit of panic and anger, I'll apologize on her behalf, but calling off an engagement is not as simple as it sounds."

Only then did Portia realize she'd practically messed with the wrong person. She was so badly rattled that she frantically turned to apologize to Enid. However, Enid ignored her and left without a backward glance. My parents followed suit, and the onlookers left, satisfied with the show they'd just watched.Portia collapsed with a dazed look in her eyes. She never expected to become the lead character of her own show.I glanced sidelong at Caleb as he quickly caught and steadied Portia, then turned and left.Caleb hurried to catch up to me. He grabbed me by the arm and said shakily, "I'm sorry, Sonia. I was wrong. Please forgive me one last time. My mom's too old to deal with something as drastic as this."He looked so small and defeated that, for a moment, I was dazed.Years ago, while I was abroad with my parents to evaluate a potential business partner, I'd sneaked out and strolled around on a whim. Along the way, I ran into a young and good-looking vagabond. He was filthy, bu

Portia was stumped. Although she'd tried to cover up the incident, plenty of people at the hospital had already seen it.She slapped Caleb hard across the face, then pointed at him with a shaky finger. "Get on your knees right now!"Caleb didn't dare to utter a word and obeyed.Portia flashed me an appeasing smile. "Sonia, I really didn't know the details of that incident, but I've already punished Caleb for you. If you don't think that's enough, perhaps I should slap myself to make it up to you."She was about to do just that when my parents stopped her. If Portia truly hurt herself because of me, there was no telling what her entourage might say about me once they left.Mom saw through Portia's intentions and said, "This is the first time Sonia's ever been in a serious relationship, and she's made her fair share of mistakes. As their elders, our place is not to meddle with our children's love affairs."But Caleb has been manipulating and fabricating records in our families' bus

I turned to see a dignified middle-aged man linking arms with an elegant woman in a sapphire-blue dress. They walked toward us slowly and gracefully.I froze. "Mom? Dad? What are you doing here?""Sorry, Sonia. I told them." Enid came out from behind them and leaned close to my ear, whispering, "They saw everything earlier, and I caught them up to speed on some of the stuff that happened before. "Distress etched itself on my features. Enid seemed to understand my concerns and reassured me. "Don't worry. Marie's condition has been under control for a year, but something happened that kept her from telling you."After that, she gave me a thumbs-up and said approvingly, "By the way, you rocked earlier."My mom, Marie Rosewell, had tear-filled eyes as she pulled me into her arms. "I'm so sorry that you went through so much, Sonia. Silly child, if we hadn't called Enid, we wouldn't have known how hard things have been for you!"For the last few years, I hadn't wanted my parents to wo

A crimson flush spread across Caleb's face.Naomi frantically dodged the doctors as they tried to drag her into the ambulance. "I don't need your false charity! There's no way you'll be this nice to me! Caleb, help me!"But Caleb had problems of his own to worry about. The members of the medical team attempted to grab Naomi by force and get her into the ambulance, but she clung to Caleb stubbornly, refusing to let go.Caleb grew anxious and barked an order at me. "Make them let Naomi go, Sonia!""Sure. I'll let her go, then submit this evidence to the court." I jerked my chin at the documents in his hand. For the last half a month, Enid had been helping me with my investigation. The evidence was airtight, and there was physical proof to back it up. I was certain to win if I took them to court. At this point, Caleb visibly backed down. He gritted his teeth, then pried Naomi's hands off his sleeve. "Naomi, go with them to the hospital and let the doctors examine you properly, alr

The airport incident had only strengthened my parents' resolve. Even Caleb suggested that I step away from handling company affairs altogether."You ran into trouble just going abroad to negotiate a business deal. Who knows what might happen to you next? It makes me uneasy. I can't risk you becoming leverage for our business rivals."I was hesitant at first. On the one hand, the company was my parents' blood, sweat, and tears, and I didn't want to hand it over to Caleb so easily. On the other hand, I wanted to share Caleb's burden.Caleb assigned me to a less taxing role to reassure and placate me.I didn't like the idea, but my parents seemed relieved by it, and Caleb was happy to oblige. Even Portia had given her approval, though she expressed her concern that Caleb was doing far too much work.In the end, I relented. However, it was only after I reviewed the business deals from the last half a month that I discovered something amiss. It was no wonder Portia had agreed with my

Caleb ran toward Naomi, panic clear on his face. He pulled her into his arms and carefully put his hand over her stomach, rubbing gentle circles on it. His expression was tender and full of concern.Who would've thought he was capable of such consideration?I remembered a time when I fell sick and had an episode of gastritis. The medicine hadn't worked, and I was in so much pain that I could hardly stand straight. I asked Caleb to take me to the hospital, but he was in a rush to meet Naomi for their date and turned me down. He didn't even bat an eye."Surely it's not as painful as you make it look. You were fine before. Besides, if I weren't home today, I doubt you'd be in so much pain that you couldn't go to the hospital yourself."He left me with those words and headed out, not forgetting the present he'd bought Naomi. After that, I called 911 when the pain became unbearable. I'd already passed out by the time the ambulance pulled up.When I got to the hospital, they discovere
