Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
"Everyone, I know that all of you are still trying to get used to the new policy." I called all team leaders to the meeting room on the afternoon of the third day.

"I asked everyone here today to inform you of two things.

"One, from next Monday onward, the attendance system will be formally linked to performance evaluations. Anyone late more than three times will have their performance rating downgraded a level."

Jack's mouth went agape, but he said nothing.

"Second—"

This time, Charlie interrupted me, "Mr. Samson, may I just say that maybe we should be a little flexible about this? How about giving everyone a ten-minute grace period? Most of us live a distance from the office, and if there were any emergencies on the way here…"

"Mr. Jenkins, you objected the loudest when we implemented the flexible hours policy. Yet now, you're the one asking for a grace period and blurring the lines of office hours."

The meeting room turned silent for a few seconds.

"It was different before…"

"Did you manage to fulfill the standard monthly working hours the last time?"

Charlie remained silent, and his fingers kept drumming the table.

"Second, Eddie Lundly's labor hours issue has been handed to Legal Affairs to handle. He has posted misleading information on his social media and given a false account of the truth, causing the company major damages.

"It has affected the company's reputation, which caused a direct revenue loss to the company. Legal Affairs is now compiling required evidence and will be issuing a lawyer's letter to him soon."

Mike looked up and exchanged a look with Charlie. "Mr. Samson, isn't this a little over the top? Eddie is just a fresh grad, and he was just being impulsive…"

"When your mother was admitted to the hospital, I permitted you to be in the office for only half a day without deducting your salary. You've benefited the most from the flexible hours policy, Mike, but in your post online, you claimed that many of your colleagues were complaining about this privately, and no one dared to voice it to the company.

"May I ask who was unhappy with this policy? Can I have a name, Mike?"

His face turned red. "I… I didn't think much of it when I wrote the post."

"When you wrote it, all you were thinking about was the online traction you would gain. Your little post now has 20,000 shares, and the angry comments from it are all directed at me. Who do you think benefited from the angry comments?

"Was it you? Did it help pay for your mother's hospital bills? Or did it help Eddie Lundly, whose hours last month only hit 60% of the standard hours?"

Mike lowered his head.

When Charlie saw this, he stopped drumming the table. "Mr. Samson, there is no need to create a mountain out of a molehill over a few words posted online."

"Mr. Jenkins, have you replied to any of your superiors' texts at midnight? Did you receive any texts from me in the middle of the night? Please take a screenshot to show it to me."

Charlie's mouth twitched. "I was just stating a general…"

"A general what? What is it that requires you to 'teach' others a lesson?"

No one else dared say another word in the meeting room.

"That's all for today. From tomorrow onward, please conduct the new policy with the strictest standard possible. No grace period will be granted, and there will be no review of any special cases. Meeting adjourned."

Everyone left after that, and I stayed five minutes longer in the meeting room.

Jenny entered with a printed document in her hand. "Mr. Samson, another email has arrived from Mr. Cross."

[Mr. Samson, my team and I have conducted a preliminary assessment of the current issue faced by your company. To be honest, based on your current company crisis and the internal reaction of your team, it has given our management ample concern about your team cohesion and your management team's ability to withstand pressure.

[We will be reevaluating the investment risk on your company and have decided to base the outcome on the actions taken by your company in the next two weeks.]

Jenny glanced at my expression as she asked cautiously, "Mr. Samson, how important is Mr. Cross' investment for our company?"

"Without his investment, the company will have to let go of 50% of our workforce."

Jenny took a sharp breath and folded the printed email to keep in her pocket.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from Eddie. It was a screenshot of the latest post on his social media.

[I just found out that I have been issued a lawyer's letter. The capitalist has finally torn off his mask. You can always find a pretext to find fault in someone. I have rights even if I'm just an employee.]

At the end of the screenshot, he texted: [Afraid yet?]

Jenny was trembling with anger when she saw the text. "That little jerk is really something…"

"He's not your average employee." I put my phone into my pocket. "He thinks that he has the right to go head-to-head with me because he's earned the sympathy of hundreds and thousands of people."

"What do you plan to do?"

I pulled open the meeting room door. "We should let this storm get bigger. Let him have his fun for now."

"Mr. Samson, the new attendance system has been drawn up." Jenny placed the amended employee handbook on my table. The company had reinstated flex-hours, but it was no longer purely self-governed. The amended system now included a few hard rules.First, employees had to be in the office during core working hours for a few days a week.Second, their working hours and performance rates would be included in their work assessments.Third, the company would conduct more humane management by doubling the reward for employees with high performance rates and placing employees with declining performance under Performance Improvement Plans."What are the employees' reactions?""Most of them are relieved. Lydia is finally able to pick up her kids, and Jack says he no longer needs to leave his house at 6:30 am. The happiest among them are the engineers. Clint and his team of engineers don't like the idea of working fixed hours and feel that flexible hours can help them increase efficiency."

"Evan, is your report done?" I asked."The report has been submitted to Mr. Cross. He's very happy about it."I took a drink of tea but said nothing.Evan looked at me and said, "Mr. Samson, Mr. Cross wants me to ask you a question.""What is it?""When did you start suspecting everything?"I put my cup down, and there were several seconds of silence in the room. "What do you mean?"Evan smiled. "The influencer with three million followers shared Eddie Lundly's post at 4:17 am. Why would an influencer who talks about labor law and the workplace share an ordinary person's social media post at 4:17 am right away?He glanced at me. "This influencer found the post so quickly without any forewarning." "That doesn't mean anything," I replied. "One of the companies this influencer works with is a public relations company whose earliest investor is Mr. Cross.""Go on."I put my cup down while Evan closed his laptop."Mr. Samson, this is probably the truth behind everything. Befo

"Mr. Jenkins, your final score is only 40."On the 14th day, Evan stood in front of the projected screen in a company-wide meeting to announce the final data collected. There was silence in the hall as a ranking sheet was displayed on the screen. The scores of the entire company were displayed from the highest to the lowest. Clint was the top scorer. Not only did he complete all his work, but he had also enhanced the response speed of two online modules. Charlie was last, while Mike was second to last."According to the rules that were announced at the start of this, two employees will be terminated."Charlie stood up right away. "Mr. Flint, I would like to emphasize that I'm part of management—""Please sit down, Mr. Jenkins."However, Charlie refused to sit. "Mr. Samson, I've been with this company for eight years, and that should count for something. How is it reasonable to terminate me over a two-week test? Who made the rules for this test? Was it Mr. Cross? He doesn't eve

"Mr. Jenkins, your progress is still at an extremely low point today." Evan mentioned a name for the first time on the seventh day, when the company was having a mid-week review.Charlie laughed awkwardly at the meeting table. "Mr. Flint, my position in this company is a little unique. Most of my work involves coordination, and it can't be justified by the work progress alone…""Your job deion is to produce analysis reports based on clients' requests, and your actual contribution to work is…" Evan flipped his notebook. "Three initial drafts, two of which were rejected and required amendments."Charlie's smile froze on his face, and no one else spoke up. Mike's head was lowered as he pushed his phone deeper into his pocket."I'd like to clarify something," Charlie said. "There is a problem with the rules of this test. The value of management comes from coordinating their teams, not having their teammates work in sile—""Mr. Jenkins," I interrupted him. "I have never heard you menti

"I'm saying it one more time. This isn't a rehearsal."I was standing in front of a huge projected screen as more than 40 pairs of eyes below the stage stared at me with shock, fear, and even anger. Evan was seated in the last row of the meeting room and scribbling something in a notebook."From tomorrow onward, every core position will receive a clear KPI that has to be achieved within two weeks." Everyone started to get agitated below the stage."Are we really required to take on extra workload and complete it within the timeframe of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm?" Jack asked from the third row."This will help prove if any of you are worthy of the position.""What if we fail the KPI?""You will be removed from your positions."There was silence in the meeting room."Every department will lay off the person with the lowest efficiency after two weeks. There is no room for negotiation." I pointed at the last row. "That man is Joe Cross' assistant, Evan Flint. He's in charge of asses

"Mr. Samson, I have some bad news!" Jenny rushed into my office the moment I took a seat at my desk that morning. It was the fifth day after the announcement of the new policy, and the company was no longer operating like a normal office."Which bad news should I start with?""Let's start with the worst one."Jenny's voice was trembling. "A total of 17 people were late this morning. Mr. Jenkins was eight minutes late, while Mike was 12 minutes late.""Handle this according to the new rules.""I have, but Mr. Jenkins shared a voice note in the group chat right away. I'll play it for you."Jenny clicked on the play button, and Charlie's voice was heard saying, "Everyone, I've been penalized as well. I've been working at this company for eight years, and I was penalized 200 dollars for being late for eight minutes. "Honestly, one needs to understand the consequences of every decision being made. Look at all the mess everyone is going through now. I don't need to tell you who cau
