Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
"Eddie, I'd like to speak to you."

I arrived at the company's front desk the next morning to see most of the employees looking tired and frazzled. They looked like they had been rushing to catch the earliest subway in the morning.

Jenny's eyes were red as she told the people around her, while clocking in, that her son had been crying in the morning because he did not want her to leave.

Jack Chorley was carrying a dark gray backpack on his back, with his hair looking like a mess. He must have rushed to the subway on his bicycle.

Eddie arrived at 8:59 am at the office. He even smiled at me. "Good morning, Mr. Samson."

"Come to my office."

He followed me into the office, but I did not let him take a seat. "About your post online…"

"Oh, that." He put down his backpack. "I was only telling the truth. The lights were on in the office at 3:00 am, and it was true that I was working."

"According to the attendance system, you weren't in the office most of the time this month."

"Well, it was flexible hours then. You were the one who set the rule that we weren't required to follow the regular work hours."

I said, "Your attendance isn't up to standard this month."

"That's because no one gave me any work. Isn't this a management problem?"

I looked at him as he looked back at me. The way he was looking at me made me feel uncomfortable. He knew exactly what he was doing, and he knew what he was saying.

"The screenshot you took of my text was missing some sentences."

"All I did was take a screenshot of the main point of the conversation." He tilted his head slightly. "You can't deny that it's true that you texted your employee at 2:00 am, can you, Mr. Samson? It doesn't matter how many times you tell me it's not urgent. Can an employee really pretend not to see any of his boss' texts?"

Eddie's answers sounded too well-prepared.

"Who taught you to say those words?"

He started looking a little shifty. "No one. Those are my words."

"An influencer called Workers' Alliance with three million followers shared your post. Do you know that influencer?"

"No, I don't. Anyone can share a post online."

I stopped asking questions and said, "You can go back to work."

Eddie walked out but suddenly stopped at the door. "I'll have to remind you, Mr. Samson, that everyone online is on my side. If you take any action on me, it will only blow things up even bigger."

He closed the door behind him, and Jenny dashed in from the conference room next door, trembling with anger. "That arrogant jerk! Mr. Samson, you should…"

"Let him be for now."

"Why?"

"Because he's right. Any action taken on him will only be seen as revenge on my part."

I returned to my computer and saw a new email in my inbox. It was a second email from Joe.

[Mr. Samson, I noticed that your company has a management issue when it comes to dealing with your employees, and there has been talk about major clients reevaluating their business relationship with your company.

[As an investor who is considering funding your company, we would like to assess this further. Please keep in touch.]

I read the email three times.

Joe and I had met twice, and he was a calm and collected man who always got straight to the point. Sending me that email was his way of informing me that the decision to invest in the company depended on how I managed the situation.

At 2:00 pm, an even bigger problem occurred. The representative of our biggest client, Saul Corman, called me.

"Mr. Samson, I saw the news about your company. It's not that I don't trust you, but our company has the policy of assessing our vendors' reputation. Now that your company is trending negatively online, we need to postpone signing the contract until all of this blows over."

"Mr. Corman…"

"Please don't make things difficult for me, Mr. Samson. I can't change the decision of my superiors."

He hung up after that.

The contract was worth ten million, and it was the company's core revenue for this quarter. I sat in my office to stare outside the window until it turned dark.

At 5:00 pm sharp, the electricity and the internet were cut off, and I could hear the noise of shuffling footsteps and complaints coming from the corridor.

Some employees did not manage to save their code in time, while others had their emails deleted while they were still drafting them.

"Mr. Samson, Mr. Jenkins called a few people to the pantry for a small meeting."

"What are they planning to discuss?"

"He said that it's just as well that things blew up this way, so that you can improve how you manage the company."

I laughed.

"What are you laughing about, Mr. Samson?"

"I'm laughing because he's forgetting something."

"What is it?"

"That he's just an employee."

"Mr. Samson, the new attendance system has been drawn up." Jenny placed the amended employee handbook on my table. The company had reinstated flex-hours, but it was no longer purely self-governed. The amended system now included a few hard rules.First, employees had to be in the office during core working hours for a few days a week.Second, their working hours and performance rates would be included in their work assessments.Third, the company would conduct more humane management by doubling the reward for employees with high performance rates and placing employees with declining performance under Performance Improvement Plans."What are the employees' reactions?""Most of them are relieved. Lydia is finally able to pick up her kids, and Jack says he no longer needs to leave his house at 6:30 am. The happiest among them are the engineers. Clint and his team of engineers don't like the idea of working fixed hours and feel that flexible hours can help them increase efficiency."

"Evan, is your report done?" I asked."The report has been submitted to Mr. Cross. He's very happy about it."I took a drink of tea but said nothing.Evan looked at me and said, "Mr. Samson, Mr. Cross wants me to ask you a question.""What is it?""When did you start suspecting everything?"I put my cup down, and there were several seconds of silence in the room. "What do you mean?"Evan smiled. "The influencer with three million followers shared Eddie Lundly's post at 4:17 am. Why would an influencer who talks about labor law and the workplace share an ordinary person's social media post at 4:17 am right away?He glanced at me. "This influencer found the post so quickly without any forewarning." "That doesn't mean anything," I replied. "One of the companies this influencer works with is a public relations company whose earliest investor is Mr. Cross.""Go on."I put my cup down while Evan closed his laptop."Mr. Samson, this is probably the truth behind everything. Befo

"Mr. Jenkins, your final score is only 40."On the 14th day, Evan stood in front of the projected screen in a company-wide meeting to announce the final data collected. There was silence in the hall as a ranking sheet was displayed on the screen. The scores of the entire company were displayed from the highest to the lowest. Clint was the top scorer. Not only did he complete all his work, but he had also enhanced the response speed of two online modules. Charlie was last, while Mike was second to last."According to the rules that were announced at the start of this, two employees will be terminated."Charlie stood up right away. "Mr. Flint, I would like to emphasize that I'm part of management—""Please sit down, Mr. Jenkins."However, Charlie refused to sit. "Mr. Samson, I've been with this company for eight years, and that should count for something. How is it reasonable to terminate me over a two-week test? Who made the rules for this test? Was it Mr. Cross? He doesn't eve

"Mr. Jenkins, your progress is still at an extremely low point today." Evan mentioned a name for the first time on the seventh day, when the company was having a mid-week review.Charlie laughed awkwardly at the meeting table. "Mr. Flint, my position in this company is a little unique. Most of my work involves coordination, and it can't be justified by the work progress alone…""Your job deion is to produce analysis reports based on clients' requests, and your actual contribution to work is…" Evan flipped his notebook. "Three initial drafts, two of which were rejected and required amendments."Charlie's smile froze on his face, and no one else spoke up. Mike's head was lowered as he pushed his phone deeper into his pocket."I'd like to clarify something," Charlie said. "There is a problem with the rules of this test. The value of management comes from coordinating their teams, not having their teammates work in sile—""Mr. Jenkins," I interrupted him. "I have never heard you menti

"I'm saying it one more time. This isn't a rehearsal."I was standing in front of a huge projected screen as more than 40 pairs of eyes below the stage stared at me with shock, fear, and even anger. Evan was seated in the last row of the meeting room and scribbling something in a notebook."From tomorrow onward, every core position will receive a clear KPI that has to be achieved within two weeks." Everyone started to get agitated below the stage."Are we really required to take on extra workload and complete it within the timeframe of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm?" Jack asked from the third row."This will help prove if any of you are worthy of the position.""What if we fail the KPI?""You will be removed from your positions."There was silence in the meeting room."Every department will lay off the person with the lowest efficiency after two weeks. There is no room for negotiation." I pointed at the last row. "That man is Joe Cross' assistant, Evan Flint. He's in charge of asses

"Mr. Samson, I have some bad news!" Jenny rushed into my office the moment I took a seat at my desk that morning. It was the fifth day after the announcement of the new policy, and the company was no longer operating like a normal office."Which bad news should I start with?""Let's start with the worst one."Jenny's voice was trembling. "A total of 17 people were late this morning. Mr. Jenkins was eight minutes late, while Mike was 12 minutes late.""Handle this according to the new rules.""I have, but Mr. Jenkins shared a voice note in the group chat right away. I'll play it for you."Jenny clicked on the play button, and Charlie's voice was heard saying, "Everyone, I've been penalized as well. I've been working at this company for eight years, and I was penalized 200 dollars for being late for eight minutes. "Honestly, one needs to understand the consequences of every decision being made. Look at all the mess everyone is going through now. I don't need to tell you who cau
