Chapter 4

Author: Sweetie Moore
Whitney noticed that I remained unmoved and suddenly panicked when she heard approaching footsteps.

She flipped over a chair to fake a fall, slapped her own face, and curled up on the ground with a pitiful cry.

“Whitney, what happened?!”

Jake hurried over to check her injuries.

Whitney immediately covered her face and wailed, “Jake, I just wanted to apologize to your senior, but she hit me.”

Jake’s face darkened with anger as he kicked over the food container.

“Estelle, when did you become so unreasonable? You even hit someone?

“I bought you your favorite food. Now, I’d rather feed it to a dog than give it to you.”

The dishes scattered on the floor were indeed all my favorites.

Who cared?

He did not ask me for my side of the story nor check the surveillance. He took Whitney’s words as truth and pinned the blame on me.

In the end, it was simple. He did not love me, so he refused to believe me.

He roared when I did not respond.

“Apologize to Whitney right now!”

Apologize?

Fine!

I had already taken the blame, so I might as well make it worth it.

I picked up the wine bottle from the table and smashed it hard against Whitney’s head.

“Sorry. I hit you too lightly earlier. I hope I didn’t disappoint this time!”

Blood began to seep from Whitney’s head.

Jake screamed in panic. He rushed to tend to her wound while calling an ambulance, drenched in sweat from panic.

Only after she was taken away did he remember to punish me.

“Guards, lock her in a room. Let her reflect on her actions for three days.”

He glared at me.

“So, you like hitting people? You can keep being arrogant.”

Then, he got into the ambulance and left without another word.

Several bodyguards dragged me away like a dead dog.

Afraid I would escape, they locked me in a windowless room and shackled my limbs with heavy chains.

When the door shut, darkness swallowed everything.

I did not expect the last three days of my life to be spent in a place like this.

Still, things only got worse.

On the first day, Whitney came in with her head wrapped in gauze, confiscated my food, and ordered them to cut off my water and meals for the next three days.

On the second day, she kicked me until my stomach churned and I vomited acid.

On the third day, she used a whip with barbs, leaving my skin torn and bleeding beneath my clothes.

I looked at her coldly.

“Aren’t you afraid Jake will find out what you did?”

She shrugged indifferently.

“So what if he does? He loves me. He won’t believe your side of the story.

“Estelle, you’re about to be released. Why don’t you try to see who he believes, you or me?

“I suggest you don’t bring this storm upon yourself.”

She pressed down on my wounds.

She only left in satisfaction after my blood soaked through the dark fabric.

She was right. Jake would not believe me.

However, it no longer mattered.

The countdown in my mind had already reached zero.

The moment the door closed, my consciousness began to fade.

Memories of our past love flashed before my eyes. They were beautiful, warm, and once real.

In the end, they shattered like glass, dissolving into nothingness.

I let out a broken laugh as my arm went limp and fell.

Jake, in my next life, and the one after that, I never want to meet you again…

That evening, Jake returned from work and finally remembered the girlfriend he had locked up.

He carried a lunchbox and pushed open the door.

“Estelle, I’m here. I locked you up for three days. You must be starving. I made you something myself to nourish you.”

There was no response. His eyes scanned the room.

Suddenly, his gaze locked onto something. His pupils shrank violently, and the lunchbox slipped from his hands, crashing to the floor as the soup and food spilled everywhere.

How dare you hurt her!”Whitney screamed in agony, still insisting on her innocence. As he continued, Jake suddenly remembered that I had once said I would die if I did not get to marry him.Guilt overwhelmed him. He struck Whitney again and again.“Estelle, was what you said true? Did you really die because I didn’t marry you?“I’m sorry. My arrogance killed you. It was not until the day I was buried that Jake finally forced himself to hold on for long enough to see me off.The news spread through the media almost immediately, and countless reporters crowded around my funeral.Whitney held Jake’s hand, trying to comfort him while whispering anxiously, “Stop being upset. There are so many reporters here today. You need to think about the bigger picture.”However, Jake only let out a cold laugh before turning toward the cameras.“I lied to everyone before. Whitney was my first love, but we broke up long ago. For all these years, the person I was truly with was my business partner, Estelle.“We kept our relationship private for the sake of our careers.“But I failed her. I believed Whitney’s lies, let myself be manipulated by her so-called life-saving favor, and even registered my marriage to her.“In the end, I caused the death of the woman I truly loved.”Gasps erupted throughout the crowd. None of the reporters had expected the truth to

Jake’s gaze was so piercing that it sent chills down Whitney’s spine.Suddenly, inspiration struck her, and she hurriedly came up with an excuse.“After Estelle hit me, my head started hurting badly, and some memories began coming back to me.”Jake stared at her for a long moment before nodding slowly.“Fine. I won’t deal with you until I finish investigating everything.”I was not surprised at all when I saw that.He had always favored Whitney. From the beginning to the end, that had never changed. Now, he had finally married the woman he wanted, and I was already dead.Of course he would not destroy his relationship with the woman he once loved over someone who was gone.Whitney quietly let out a sigh of relief and hurried away, not daring to stay any longer.Jake dismissed everyone else and remained alone in the morgue with me.He held my hand as tears glistened in his eyes.“It’s only been a few days, and you’ve already gotten thinner. He was cautious by nature and had installed surveillance cameras throughout the house.Whitney had no idea about it.When she saw Jake starting to review the footage, her expression changed instantly. She clutched her stomach and slowly collapsed to the ground.“Jake, my stomach hurts so badly!”…Jake only glanced at her once before ignoring her completely.Even if he had been slow to realize things before, he could clearly see through her little tricks at this point.“There’s a doctor here. Go ahead and register yourself if you’re not feeling well.”He kept his eyes fixed on the surveillance footage, ignoring everyone around him.First, he pulled up the video from the night of our argument. He saw Whitney faking a fall and framing me with his own eyes. His gaze turned sharp and icy as he shot her a cold look.Whitney immediately lowered her head, pretending to be wronged.“I’m sorry. Jake’s anger surged instantly when no one spoke. He roared, “Speak! Have you all gone mute? Who else has been here recently?!”The bodyguards hesitated for a moment. When they were just about to say Whitney had visited, she hurried over in quick, determined steps. She was perfectly composed, so well-disguised that it seemed as though she had never harmed me at all. However, the shock and panic in her eyes made it clear to me that she was far less calm than she appeared.“Jake, what’s going on?“Is your senior sick? What did she say?”Jake had no patience to deal with her.Just then, the ambulance arrived. He immediately called for the doctors. The nurses quickly transferred me onto the stretcher and hooked me up to emergency equipment. Not a single face looked calm inside the ambulance. The doctor heaved a sigh and said, “Mr. Field, the patient has no vital signs. Jake saw me lying on the ground. He was about to walk over when he suddenly seemed to remember something and stopped in his tracks.“I almost fell for your act.“Come on, it’s not April Fool’s Day. Get up.“You scared me. I dropped all the food I made! Now, I have to start over again.”My soul hovered beside the scene, watching it all with nothing but a sarcastic expression. When someone did not love you, even your death was another pretense to them.I was clearly lying there, my face pale, yet he still had not realized it. His tone was annoyed.“Estelle, I finally finished work and came to see you. Can you stop this nonsense?”I was already dead. I could not respond anymore. He grew impatient and nudged me with his foot.“Hey!”My body rolled slightly from the push.Only then did he finally notice how pale I looked. Panic flashed in his eyes as he rushed over.“Estelle, what’s wrong with you?“It’s just three days of confinement. Don’t scare me by pretending to be dead.
