Chapter Three

Judge Jackson…

Time stopped and Earth stood still as his title and name echoed, bouncing off the walls of the confined room. His expression changed from playful and coy to serious. My breath quickened as my nerves took over. I’d been at the mercy of a Judge the entire time and didn’t know it. I argued with a Judge, no less! There was no way I’d escape punishment…or death.

He knows.

I could see it in his eyes when I lied about my wolf status, but I figured he couldn’t do anything about it. I was so wrong.

“Judge Jackson, I apologize for the intrusion,” Supervisor Rachel said, stepping forward and grabbing my hand. “Imani has always been one of our more curious girls with her head always in the clouds. She must’ve gotten distracted on the way to class. It’s our fault for not keeping a better eye on her.”

Realizing I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Judge Jackson, Supervisor Rachel shoved my head down in submission. Instead of staring into his mystifying blue eyes, I stared at his polished military-issued boots. My heart pounded with fear, forcing the blood to rush through my ears like an ocean wave. Of course, I’d never been to the beach before, none of us had. I didn’t know what it felt like to have the wet sand squish between my toes or to witness the waves as they collided against the shore. I watched plenty of videos, but I had a feeling that videos didn’t do it justice.

“Has she been exhibiting any abnormal behavior?” Judge Jackson asked Supervisor Rachel.

“Abnormal behavior? Such as what?”

“Abnormal, as in, deviating from what is usual, typical, or normal,” he said in an annoyed tone, spelling it out for her. The two women I considered the closest beings to mothers failed to answer. A strong feeling of disappointment and abandonment overwhelmed me. Realistically, I knew they were afraid. They were just as afraid as I was because they strongly suspected I wasn’t a Purebred wolf. They had no way of knowing for certain, only a Judge knew, but the bold ‘C’ on my chest was a strong indicator.

“Supervisor Sarah?” he challenged. She bowed her head and folded her hands in front of her, immediately deferring to Supervisor Rachel. “Supervisor Rachel…your partner is a coward. I’m waiting.”

I kept my head bowed in shame as Supervisor Rachel inhaled a sharp breath. “I-I’m sure you’ve noticed that she doesn’t give off pheromones, Judge Jackson.

Curiosity at how he’d react caused me to glance up at him, only to find him already staring down at me with a look of pure annoyance. His magnetic eyes struck fear in me. They were both bright, yet simultaneously soulless. They were judging, unforgiving, and relentless. They screamed “I’m just doing my job” yet I had a difficult time accepting that he didn’t take pleasure from his job because why would he do it? Why didn’t he accept another position that didn’t involve killing innocent, helpless young women whose only sin was being born.

It felt like slow motion when his finger moved to the trigger. It grazed it, almost reverently. I closed my eyes, not caring to witness my own demise. I jolt when a strong hand lands on my shoulder. I opened my eyes to find Judge Jackson staring at me with a blank face, but there was something different about his eyes…they were…smiling? He holstered the weapon.

“I have important tasks to complete. Please, Supervisor Rachel, keep a close eye on Ms….What is your name, girl?”

“I-Imani.”

He clicked his tongue. “What a charming name. Please escort Ms. Imani to her class. We wouldn’t want her to miss any vital information, now do we?”

“N-No, Judge Jackson. Thank you,” Supervisor Rachel said. “You mentioned you had important tasks to complete. Is there anything we can do to help you as an apology for our mistake?”

I glance down again when I caught his attention.

“There is a human amongst us.”

“Oh my,” Supervisor Sarah commented.

“A human? In Eden? How could that possibly happen?” Supervisor Rachel asked. She sounded both distressed and concerned.

“That is what we’re trying to figure out. He blended in with the male werewolves who came to participate in the class. We need to find the human, Imani.”

My eyes snapped back up and my mouth dropped in surprise.

We need to find him? As in...Judge Jackson and I?

“You need my assistance in finding him?”

“That’s correct.”

“Why?”

“Because I have a feeling you know a thing or two about humans,” he answered.

“But that’s impossible. I’ve never encountered a human before.”

He smirked. “Right.”

A hand grabs my arm and pulled me away. It was Supervisor Rachel. “I’m sorry, Judge Jackson, but I do not believe that Imani will be of service to you. Supervisor Sarah and I will be escorting her back to class with the rest of the werewolves. As you said, we don’t want her to miss any vital information.”

He nodded. Finally relenting in his inquisition. “You are dismissed.” We were almost out of the door when he called out to us. “Do not be alarmed if you see me or my colleagues enter the classroom. We’ll merely be there for observation. We promise to be as silent as church mice.”

“Very well, Judge Jackson. Thank you for your lenient mercy,” Supervisor Rachel commented. “Imani,” she said in a stern voice. I already knew what she wanted from me.

“I apologize, Judge Jackson.”

His lips quirked into a slight smile. “That’s quite all right.”

I could finally breathe again once we crossed the threshold of the infirmary. My breath was so loud that I didn’t hear the badgering from Supervisor Rachel and Sarah as they led me to class. “Stay close this time,” Supervisor Sarah growled.

I was lost in my own world. She could’ve said she knew the exit route from Eden, and it still wouldn’t have registered. I escaped death…barely. I bought myself three more days.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end when someone whispered in my ear, “I’ll be keeping an eye on you.”

ImaniHe didn’t say what I think he said…did he? Please, Goddess, tell me he didn’t say that he marked me.“I-I’m sorry. Can you repeat that?”“I marked you,” he responded plainly.“Without my consent? We talked about this.”“It was in the heat of the moment,” he tried explaining.“But what about the ramifications?” I asked, trying to break through to him.He leaned in and whispered in my ear, “How is anyone going to know?”His fingers trailed beneath the water and wrapped around my thigh. He propped my leg up, giving me a view of his mark. It was raised against my flesh, resembling a fang.“What do you think?” he asked hesitantly as I traced the mark with a finger. I could hear the uncertainty in his voice—a subtle fear that I would disapprove of his mark.“It’s unique,” I whispered. He snorted, and I relaxed against his chest. “It’s a good thing,” I insisted.“You’re unique,” he said, reminding me that we still needed to get to the bottom of what I was.“You were going to shoot me,”

ImaniI lay on the bed, soaking wet from the shower, yet Jackson didn’t seem to mind. His gaze roved over me hungrily, and mine did the same. He…was…glorious. And there wasn’t an inch of sculpted muscles that I didn’t want to touch and taste. I could still taste him on my tongue—rich, salty, and delicious. He climbed on the bed, hovering over me briefly before capturing my lips with his. The kiss was soft and delicate, and as much as I appreciated his care and gentleness, my heat was threatening to engulf me.“Jack, I need you,” I said, whimpering as another pulsing heat shot through me. He gazed into my eyes and it was then I realized the brilliant blue had shifted to black. He nodded and said, “Forgive me now if I can’t control myself.”“What?” I asked incredulously.“Say you forgive me,” he pleaded, smoothing away the hair that clung to my forehead.“I-I forgive you.”He kissed my forehead and wedged himself between my thighs. I felt him long and hard as he nudged at my entranced.

Jackson“J-Jackson, what are you doing?” she stammered, pressing herself against the shower wall. She was scared to death, but so was I.I watched in horror as steam rose from her flesh. My worst nightmare had come true. I allowed myself to develop feelings for Imani against my better judgment, and now I had to put her down. How cruel of the Moon Goddess to curse us with this affliction. Haven’t we suffered enough?“You’re…you’re mutating,” I whispered. I switched the gun to my opposite hand, hoping the shaking would stop, but it only worsened.“Jackson…put the gun away…please. I’m not mutating. I think it’s my heat,” she said, pleading for her life.“That’s what you would say to stay alive.”She closed her eyes, and I couldn’t tell if the liquid that rolled down her cheeks was tears or the water from the shower head.I tensed when I heard my wolf’s voice in my head.Rowan: Breed her.Jackson: Are you fucking mad?Rowan: She’s not mutating. ImaniI woke to a pounding headache and Mary sitting in a chair beside my bed. “Goddess, you’re finally up,” she rushed out, relocating to the edge of the bed. “How long was I out?”“Maybe twenty minutes. How are you feeling?”“I have an headache,” I admitted, touching the back of my head. I hissed when my fingers made contact and jerked my hand back.“I’ll get you some aspirin,” Mary said, leaving for the bathroom. She rummaged around the medicine cabinet before returning with a glass of water and two white pills. I took the painkillers and prayed they’d have an immediate affect. “Imani… Max didn’t mean to hurt you,” she said almost pleadingly. I winced and settled further against the pillows as she continued to hurl apologies at me. “I’m sorry, Mary, but I’m not in really in the mood for talking. I accept your apologies, but I wish to be alone.”I felt a sharp pang in my chest when Mary’s face fell. The guilt on her soft features was overwhelming. “Hey,” I said, reaching out to

JacksonMax gazed at me hopefully before asking, “You will?”I nodded sullenly. “I will.”“Why?”“Your mate is pregnant. Your instincts will want you to be near her at all times. Worst case scenario, you’ll become distracted and make mistakes and you might not return. We can’t let that happen.”Max smirked. “You’re not fooling me. With me gone, you wouldn’t have anyone to have your back.”“Two things can be true at once,” I insisted. “I’m at a lost, Max. Tell me why you’re willing to risk your livelihood and status?”He snorted derisively. I observed him carefully as he swirled the whiskey in his glass gently. He looked like a man backed into a corner with no way to escape–a man on a tall ledge, staring dow at the long drop in trepidation. “Your question is rhetorical; you’re asking questions you already know the answer to.”“I wish I had all the answers, but I don’t. You need to get to talking because as it stands, I am your superior, and keeping your secret would give the Elders

ImaniMy eyes widened from Mary’s revelation. Pregnant?“Oh…Mary,” I whispered, bending down to embrace her in a hug. “When did you find out?”“This morning, actually. We were so excited and then Max received a voice mail from Judge Jackson informing him that he needed to take his place on this mission.”“I’m so happy for you, Mary. When are you going to register your pregnancy?”An uncomfortable feeling seeped into my bones when Mary’s face paled. She stood on shaky legs and pulled me to my walk in closet, closing the door behind us. “I have to tell you something. But you have to promise not to say anything. You can’t even tell Judge Jackson,” she whispered. “Can you do that?” I gulped around the large knot that formed in my throat, preparing myself for the worst. I licked my dry lips before nodding. “I need you to say it,” she hissed.“I won’t say anything,” I rushed out.“Not even to Judge Jackson,” Mary repeated.“I won’t say anything…not even to Jackson.”She glanced at me ster
