Chapter 1

Rosella's POV

"I agree to a full erasure and completely wipe out my identity," I announced, looking at Matteo Adorni's papa, Don Domenico Adorni.

"You should have agreed to this deal a long time ago, and now you've wasted so much of our time. Commoner women truly have no brains."

He leaned heavily on his cane and sized me up with pure disgust, as if I were something filthy and repulsive. But I no longer cared.

Moments later, the Underboss, Venero Castellano, unchained me from the rack. Pain shot through my body, and my legs gave out as I collapsed onto the floor.

"You'll leave in a week, and you are never to return. Once your identity is wiped out, no one can ever find you again," Domenico said and lifted my chin with the tip of his cane.

The light flooding in from the open dungeon doors stabbed at my eyes. As I crawled out of the dungeon, I felt like I was about to be reborn.

"Rosella!"

A familiar voice rang in my ears before Matteo gently wrapped me in a blanket. "Papa finally agreed to let you out!"

My stomach couldn't help but churn violently the moment I caught the scent of Giorgia Vitali's perfume on him.

"Giorgia's fully recovered now. She even said she's willing to forgive you, so let's just put this behind us."

"But I never poisoned her," I protested.

Matteo's expression immediately darkened. "I told you, Giorgia has forgiven you, so stop making excuses."

"But—"

"Hey, behave… I told you it's over, so it doesn't matter anymore. Just keep your head down for the next few days while I arrange our departure. We leave in a week."

How did it not matter anymore?

The poisoning accusation was the reason why I was whipped and tortured in the dungeon, so how could it possibly not matter now? Why was I forced to accept the blame in silence for something I had never done?

Matteo didn't trust me at all.

My heart began to throb in waves, and tears slipped down my face.

Back then, when Giorgia first claimed I had pushed her down the stairs, I wept and desperately explained to him that I hadn't even touched her. We were about to leave, so why would I try to kill Giorgia now?

But he didn't give me so much as a second glance.

Cradling Giorgia in his arms, Matteo delivered his cold, final verdict to his men. "Take her to the dungeon. Make sure she learns to be compliant."

Then, he looked down at her with a gentleness that had once belonged just to me…

During our first few years together, Matteo used to look at me just like that.

If I accidentally scraped my skin, he would fret and tend to me, meticulously cleaning the wound and applying ointment. He would even cook my meals himself.

I used to laugh and coyly say, "You're going to make it impossible for me to leave you."

He would hold me tight like I was his most sacred treasure. "That's the whole point. I want to make sure you can never leave me."

It wasn't until Domenico surrounded our home that I learned Matteo was the heir to the next Don of the Adorni famiglia. According to the ironclad laws of Pentarchy Famiglie, heirs were strictly forbidden from marrying commoners.

A dozen men had swarmed us and pointed their firearms at him as they barked orders, "You are the heir to the famiglia. Return home and fulfill your duty."

Matteo had looked back at me with a bitter smile, but he hadn't surrendered. Instead, he grabbed my hands tightly and swore. "Amore mio, you're the only one I'll ever love."

I had been deeply moved to tears as I leaned gently in his arms. He had looked at me the same way then.

But now, he looked at Giorgia with that same gentle gaze and soothed her. "Don't worry. I won't let anyone harm our child."

…

When I got to the room, Giorgia was sitting on the couch, looking heavily pregnant. She froze for a second when she saw me, then quickly smiled.

"Rosella, darling! I'm so glad they're finally willing to let you out!

"I told them I forgave you the second I woke up, but Matteo said you needed to be taught a lesson to make you behave."

I looked over at Matteo, but he wasn't looking at me at all. Instead, his eyes were fixed warmly on her.

I was about to offer a hollow, dismissive response when I looked down and caught a glimpse of the ring on her finger. It was a brilliant green emerald, reflecting a soft, elegant light that seemed to stab into my eyes.

That was Mamma's keepsake!

My pupils shrank as I grabbed her hand. "Where did you get this?"

"Giorgia liked the ring."

Matteo immediately grabbed my arm, so I had to let go of Giorgia. His expression was a look of absolute entitlement as he said, "You hurt her, so think of it as making amends."

I stared at him blankly, feeling as though I had never known him at all.

"You know exactly what this piece of jewelry means to me," I murmured. "It's Mamma's keepsake!"

He gave me a gentle look and spoke in the same soft, placating voice he always used when trying to calm me down. "But Giorgia's carrying my baby right now. Just let her have this one thing."

It was always the same sentence, and I had given in to her countless times.

He had long stopped putting me first.

Rosella's POVThunder rumbled across the sky.To avoid further complications and entanglements with Matteo, I turned around and walked toward my dormitory, never looking back. There was no sound from behind me. He was likely standing rooted to the spot. The moment I stepped into my dormitory, rain came crashing down in sheets. I peered through the window and saw him standing completely motionless, letting the downpour soak him through.I drew the curtains shut. Deep down, I knew with absolute certainty that there was no future for us.…Over the next few months, the Adornis officially decided to fund the orphanage. I worked alongside Gabriella to renovate every room, replace broken desks and worn-out chairs, and buy brand-new bedding for the children.Watching the children run, laugh, and play in the hall brought me a sense of peace and stability.…One day, while I was playing with the children, I caught a man standing at the gates from the corner of my eye. It was Matteo.

Matteo's POVI was walking through the darkness when Giorgia appeared before my eyes, locked in a dungeon. She stared up at me, weeping and begging to see our children with the same pitiful expression she had always worn. But the next second, she screamed as I lashed her with a whip, strike after strike. "For every single ounce of pain you inflicted on Rosella, I'm going to return it to you bit by bit. I'll make sure you live in hell," I hissed, glaring down at her. This was all her fault. She dropped the fragile act and let out a mocking sneer. "You still haven't found Rosella, have you? Do you honestly think she'll forgive you after watching the videos?"She's nothing but a bitch! A commoner like her is never worthy of you!"I should've just killed her when she was locked in the dungeons…"The taunting remarks continued as I kept swinging the whip until her venomous voice finally went silent.Suddenly, the scene shifted. I saw Rosella standing among the clouds, crying that

Rosella's POVMatteo and his men had been watching the children play when the men in black stormed in, sending the children scattering in all directions. The Adornis' well-trained guards reacted instantly and launched into a swift counterattack. I quickly grabbed a few panicked, fleeing children, pulled them into hiding in a corner, and shielded them with my body.I dared not lift my head or move as bullets whizzed past just inches above my head. Swallowing my terror, I tried to calm the children with a reassuring look.I lost all track of time, and eventually, the gunfire and fighting stopped.Trembling, I turned my head and peered out.The backyard was dead silent. Only a few Adorni men remained, checking bodies littered in the yard.Matteo stood not far away. His eyes were locked dead on me, and his lips parted as if he wanted to say something.I stared back at him and didn't say a word, barely even noticing the chaos around us anymore. In that moment, all the pain I had bu

Rosella's POVWithin days of my return to the orphanage, the news was flooded with headlines about the brutal fallout between the Adorni and Vitali famiglie. The conflict quickly escalated into bloodshed, dragging the rest of Pentarchy Famiglie into chaos.I couldn't help feeling emotional about it.From what I remembered, Matteo had never loved Giorgia, but he still treated her with care and attention for the sake of their two children. I never imagined things would fall apart between them so quickly. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore. I barely glanced at the news before scrolling away, since I had my own life to worry about now.The orphanage where I grew up sat at the base of a remote mountain. It was incredibly run-down.Lately, I was caught up in helping our director, Gabriella Conti, raise emergency funds everywhere. Even before this, I had consistently wired a portion of my earnings back.On top of that, I filled in as a teacher to help the kids learn t

I fought to stay lucid and dragged myself to Giorgia's ward.Just as I reached the door, the sound of a baby wailing drifted out from within the room. Giorgia was inside, feeding our newborn son formula, but it seemed like something extra had been slipped into the milk powder. There was a manic expression on her face, a terrifying contrast to the gentle mother I thought she was."I'm sorry, baby," she muttered. "But if you get sick, Papa has to stay and keep making babies with me. I'll make it up to him and give him so many heirs…"My pupils constricted, and the veins on the back of my hand bulged. Waves of vertigo hit me.So, that was the truth. All this time, I believed that the children constantly getting sick was somehow Rosella's fault. But as it turned out, everything was Giorgia, their biological mamma's doing.Time and time again, I abandoned the love of my life and spent endless nights keeping watch beside their hospital beds. I let Rosella be punished and had her heart

All I wanted was to see Rosella. As soon as I woke up, I sent my men to look for any trace of Rosella. The room was in ruins. I had destroyed every single piece of furniture that could be smashed.I stared coldly at the furious Papa and at Giorgia, standing to the side as she cradled our daughter, Ariana Adorni, in her arms. I tightened my grip on the knife in my hand and forced the sharp tip an inch deeper into my wrist."Let me leave," I demand in a cold, resolute voice. "Let me go find her, or we will all die."The moment I woke up, I tried to go after Rosella. I was going to take her away and never come back, but they desperately refused to let me leave. They even brought Ariana here, hoping she woul
