Chapter 3

作者: Rivertown
Erina was stunned when she caught sight of me.

"Ms. Holloway?" she asked, glancing at the suitcase in my hand before looking at Nora behind me. There was a small smile on her face. "What are you doing here?"

I was just about to reply when Larry stepped in and interrupted me.

"She's a central guard," he said so naturally that he almost sounded cold. "She got hurt and has been staying here for a few days to recover."

I tightened my hold on the handle of my suitcase until my palm hurt.

I'd heard the same words from him multiple times in the past. This wasn't the first time. However, every time he repeated them, it still felt like a fresh wound in my heart.

I still hadn't managed to say a thing yet, but Nora had already stepped out from behind me. She was looking up at Larry. She then said in a soft voice, "Good evening, Mr. Alpha."

Larry froze at once. He stared at Nora as if he couldn't believe his ears.

"What did you just call me?"

I smirked slightly and found it ironic. Wasn't this what Larry had always wanted all along? He was the one who told Nora to stop calling him "Daddy" in the past. Now, Nora was the one who stopped calling him that first.

The look in Larry's eyes turned complex. He reached out and gripped my wrist tightly.

"Give me some time," he said, staring at me. "I will explain things to her."

I looked down at his hand on my wrist and said, "Let go. Erina's waiting for you."

He finally snapped back to his senses and slowly let go of me.

I held Nora's hand and walked out.

"Wait."

Larry hurried back to the car, brought out a cake box from the backseat, and handed it to Nora.

"Happy birthday."

Nora's eyes brightened at once.

However, seconds later, Erina smiled and added, "This is the limited edition cake that Larry ordered for me a few days ago at Creche Bakery in the Neutral Zone. I didn't know that it was your pup's birthday today too. What a coincidence! Happy birthday, little one!"

The box suddenly felt very heavy.

I wanted to reject the cake at first, but Nora was still very young, and she pursed her lips at me. She couldn't stop herself from asking Larry, "Can you please eat this cake with me too?"

Larry went silent for a while before nodding.

We went back inside the house.

I opened the box and cut a small slice of the cake. However, when I smelled it, my heart dropped into my stomach at once.

It was made with almonds.

"Don't eat it!" I exclaimed, snatching the fork away from Nora's hands. My reaction was so quick that I didn't even realize I'd reacted that way.

However, it was still too late.

Nora had already eaten a piece of the cake, and now, she was bending over and dry heaving onto the floor.

Larry's face darkened at once. He asked in a dangerous voice, "What are you doing, Sarah Holloway?"

I pulled Nora into my arms and looked up at him with reddened eyes.

"Nora is allergic to almonds," I said, making every word clear. "Didn't you know that?"

Larry froze.

A few long seconds later, he finally said in a low voice, "I didn't."

There was that excuse again.

Nora leaned weakly into my arms. Her face was as pale as a sheet. She looked at Larry. The final flicker of hope died out in her eyes. She didn't even feel any resentment toward him anymore.

"It's okay, Mommy," she said in a tiny voice. "It's normal that Mr. Alpha doesn't know."

At that point, I didn't hesitate anymore. I picked Nora up and turned to leave.

This time, Larry didn't come after me.

He stood frozen in place. His gaze was still on our backs like he wanted to say something, but he never said a word in the end.

I didn't look back. Instead, I handed over the signed application form to the elder at the administration center and left.

Then, I carried Nora in my arms as we got into the train that would take us to the airport for our flight to the Neutral Zone.

The wintry woods of the north flew by outside the train windows. I lowered my head and asked Nora, "Will you feel sad if we never see him again?"

Nora leaned into my arms and thought about it seriously. Then, she shook her head slightly.

"I won't be sad," she said, hugging my neck. "I'm not afraid of anything as long as Mommy is with me."

My nose tingled with tears, and I hugged her even tighter than before.

Before reaching our stop, I pulled out my phone and blocked Larry on every platform that he could use to reach me.

This was goodbye. He was not in my life anymore from now onward.

Third-Person POV

Early the next morning, Larry woke up earlier than usual. He ordered the maids to prepare breakfast for Erina, specifically requesting medium veal steaks, the first cranberries of the season juiced, and toast, getting particular with the doneness of the toast down to the second.

Erina was a noble and elegant white wolf, after all, and it was only right for her to be very particular with things so that they would be done properly.

After that, he went to the headquarters as usual, planning to read up on the reports that had come in from the trade centers at the borders.

Seconds later, a document was placed on his desk.

Larry looked at the document and frowned when he read the title.

It said, "Application Form for Leaving the Pack."

Larry's eyes suddenly welled up with tears.Sarah walked over and gently placed her hands on Nora's shoulders. Larry looked up at her. His voice was low as he pleaded, "I was wrong, Sarah. I can make it up to you. I'll acknowledge her in public. I'll also—""Make me Luna of the pack?" she asked, completing the sentence for him with a calm expression on her face.Larry's breath caught in his throat.Sarah looked at him and was reminded of her most vulnerable moment from years ago. Back then, she had really loved him and thought that she could put up with all the grievances, misunderstandings, and his coldness toward her as long as she still loved him. However, she found out later that that wasn't how things worked after all."You know, I used to love you, Larry," she said. Then, she continued calmly, "But love isn't necessary for survival. I've already stepped out of that shadow with Nora. I don't need you, or status, or the Luna position anymore."A gentle breeze ruffled her hai

Larry didn't leave the Neutral Zone immediately. He went to Nora's new school the next day instead. The school was having an open day, and the playground was filled with the kids' and pups' excited laughter. Some were playing soccer, some were riding on the swings, and some were learning how to protect their heads and throats in case of danger.Larry stood outside the fence and spotted Nora at once. She was wearing a light-blue shirt, and her long hair was tied back in a high ponytail as she followed along with the self-defense moves.Sarah was standing not too far away from her. The security center had sent her along as a temporary self-defense instructor that day, and she was busy correcting a few of the pups' postures. The sunlight shone down brightly on Sarah and Nora.Larry realized that they weren't only barely scraping by after leaving the pack. Rather, they were getting by very well.Toward the end of the self-defense class, one of the wolves who was attending the open da

Larry stood opposite the street for a while. He didn't approach Sarah at first. He had imagined many different scenarios for their reunion. He'd imagined Sarah crying as she questioned him, or coldly shooing him back, or pretending not to have noticed him at all. However, none of that happened.Sarah just stood across the street, watching him silently without any surprise or emotion in her eyes. It was almost as if she knew all along that he would come after her like this.In the end, Larry was the one who made the first move."Sarah."He walked up to her. His voice sounded far more hoarse than expected.Sarah averted her gaze as she said indifferently, "This is not Snowlight Pack. You don't have to call me like that, like you're about to order me around."Larry's chest tightened."I'm not ordering anyone around.""Then, what are you doing here?"Larry glanced at her, feeling his words die in his throat. Ultimately, only one sentence survived."I came to find you and Nora

News of Larry's decision to leave quickly reached Erina's ears.He had only just reached the airport when Erina stopped him right in front of the boarding gate. She wasn't wearing any loud jewelry today. She was wearing only a crisp and white trench coat as she stared at him with a calm expression. She was still as poised as ever."Sarah is your mistress. And that pup named Nora is your illegitimate pup, right?"Larry stopped and didn't deny it.Erina stared at him for a few seconds. She suddenly smiled and said, "So, you're abandoning the alliance with Eastwood Pack to pursue a powerless she-wolf as your Luna.""In terms of influence and riches, I won't deny that you're more suitable to be my Luna, but my heart tells me that I love Sarah instead. She would never abandon any pack member just because they were weak," he said. The wind blew from the end of the tarmac, ruffling Erina's coat. She remained silent for a while before speaking softly."Okay. I understand. Eastwood Pack

Larry refused to believe it. So, he tried calling Sarah instead. However, he only heard the cold, robotic female voice on the other end of the line, telling him that Sarah's number could not be reached. His face darkened. He immediately called the administrative office."Where is Sarah Holloway?"There was a two-second silence on the phone. "Ms. Holloway is not on duty anymore, Alpha. She submitted her resignation on the same day she completed her handover procedures in the pack. She's also already returned her badge, ID, and warrior weapon."Larry tightened his hold on the phone."What did you just say?""The resignation was submitted two days ago. Ms. Holloway's badge, ID, and weapon have already been turned in. You were the one who signed the document, Alpha…"Larry suddenly recalled that he'd indeed signed a document the night he went back on Nora's birthday. However, he had simply assumed that it was a supporting document for Nora's schooling. He hung up without further th

The next morning, Larry sent Brock to handle the aftermath of the trade center attack as soon as he woke up."Use the money in my private vault," he said, leaning back in the hospital bed. His voice was still a little hoarse. "Replenish the meds in the healing center first, then issue emergency deposits to the pack members who were injured last night. And provide compensation to the damaged stalls as well."Brock nodded and left with Larry's card. However, less than half an hour later, he returned with a confused expression on his face."Alpha," he said, crouching by the bed, speaking in a low voice. "There's no more money on the card."Larry looked at him and frowned."What did you say?"Brock showed him his phone screen and spoke in an even lower tone, "I got someone to check the transaction records, and the card was literally emptied yesterday."Larry took the phone from him and scrolled down. There were payments made for jewelry, haute couture gowns, health supplements, im
