Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Pumpkin Scoop
"First, you'll leave for college. Then, you'll get a job somewhere else! Then, you'll marry someone there! And after that, you'll never care about me again! You're just like your heartless mother. You both want to abandon me!"

He collapsed onto the floor, pounding his fists against it as he cried out in misery.

I had seen this scene play out countless times in my previous life. Any time I showed the slightest resistance, he would break down, listing everything he had sacrificed for me and accusing me of being an ungrateful son.

Back then, I had truly believed he was right. I thought I was the one who had failed him. It was not until the moment I jumped off that rooftop...

I interrupted, "Dad, I never said I wouldn't take care of you."

He looked up through tear-filled eyes, as if he had just grabbed hold of his last shred of hope.

"Then change it back! There's still time! Accept the local college's offer! Go to medical school! Become a doctor after you graduate. It's a stable career! You won't have to live so far away, and I'll get to see you all the time..."

"I'm not changing it." My voice was quiet but unwavering. "And stay out of my college applications."

He froze. It was obvious he had never expected me to reject him so directly.

I picked up my laptop, stepped around him where he was still slumped on the floor, and walked into my bedroom, locking the door behind me.

Outside, he kept yelling.

A few minutes later, I heard him calling our relatives. In between sobs, he told them how difficult he was, how much he had sacrificed, and how ungrateful I had become.

I could not have cared less. Instead, I opened my laptop's security settings and changed the password. The simple one based on my birthday became a long, complicated string of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

Leaning against my headboard, I rested a hand on the cool metal casing of my laptop and silently promised myself that this time… my life belonged to me. I would never compromise for anyone again.

Maybe it was because the pain of jumping off that rooftop had felt so real in my previous life, I slept like a rock.

My dreams were haunted by scattered fragments of that life.

My fingers were cracked and bleeding after endless winters spent working at an auto repair shop. Then came the vase my wife had hurled at me during one of our fights. After that, Dad was standing in my living room, looking at me with disappointment as he said, "You couldn't even keep your wife. The kids are already grown. Just put up with it."

I jolted awake, my forehead drenched in cold sweat.

The bedroom was dark, with the only light coming from my laptop screen. Then, I heard it. The soft tapping of keys.

Someone was sitting at my desk, trying to guess my laptop password.

The moment he realized I was awake, the bedroom light snapped on, forcing me to squint against the sudden brightness. Before I could fully gather my thoughts, Dad hurled the laptop onto my bed. His face was ashen with rage.

Pointing a finger at me, he shouted, "You changed the password? What's that supposed to mean? You're guarding against me like I'm some kind of thief?"

Anger flared inside me. However, the instant I met his eyes, all that anger drained away, leaving only exhaustion.

I had known this would happen.

For more than ten years, he had walked into my room whenever he wanted. He went through my phone whenever he felt like it. Even when I set a password, I had to tell him what it was.

I sat up, pulled the laptop closer, and answered calmly, "I already told you, my college decisions are mine to make. This is my computer, and you have no right to go through it."

"I'm your father! What of yours can't I look at?" His face turned bright red, his voice sharp enough to cut.

"Do you really think I'd hurt you? I just wanted to see which schools you applied to! I'm doing this for your own good! Why do you have to go so far away?

"Choose a college here, become a doctor after graduation, and then I'll help you find a good wife and settle down. Isn't that a whole lot better than drifting around somewhere far from home?"

I had heard those words my entire life. "I'm doing this for your own good."

In my previous life, those exact words had dragged me straight into hell.

"Enough!" My voice was not loud, but it stopped him cold. I walked over to the coffee table and picked up the fruit knife lying on top.

I did not point it at him. I simply held it in my hand.

I looked Dad straight in the eye. With the last bit of strength I had left, I gave him my clearest, coldest, and most desperate warning I had given since my rebirth."Dad, don't even think about following me this time. If you try to come after me again, or interfere with my life in any way... you can find out for yourself whether I'd be willing to jump from an even higher place this time."The hand holding the exchange application trembled like a leaf in the fall wind.Dad stared into my eyes. The determination and the emptiness, they pierced through the last illusion he had been clinging to like an icy blade. At last, he understood. The son who had obeyed him since childhood was gone. He had died beneath years of relentless control and he had died on that rooftop, in the freezing wind. The person standing before him was no longer the son he remembered. It was someone else. A soul covered in scars. Someone who had been driven to the edge, someone willing to risk everything just t

"N-No... That's not true..." Dad shook his head frantically. His face had gone as white as paper as he instinctively took a step backward. It was as if that single sheet of paper weighed a thousand pounds. As if it burned too much for him to bear."I was doing it for his own good... I was just afraid he'd get hurt... I was afraid he'd make the wrong choices... I'm his father!""That's exactly why your actions have affected him so deeply." The counselor's voice softened, but her resolve did not. "Love is not control. It is not surveillance, and it should never come at the cost of a child's independence or mental well-being."Real love is built on respect, and it's knowing when to let go. It's allowing him to become the person he wants to be. Even if he falls, even if he takes the long way around, because that is his life to live."What you need to do now isn't watch over him even more closely. You need to step back. Give him space and support his treatment. And honestly, I believe

The comments section was almost completely one-sided. Every single commenter was attacking me.[What's wrong with young people these days? His father quit his job and moved near the university just to take care of him, and he still wants to drive his own dad away?][What an ungrateful brat. His father sacrificed so much for him, and this is how he repays him?][Someone like him doesn't deserve a father like that.]It did not take long before people dug up my name, my major, and even the college I attended. They flooded the school's official social media accounts, demanding that the university punish me. Some even demanded that I be expelled.Soon, my private messages were overflowing with hateful comments. People even came to my dorm building to secretly take pictures of me. They posted the photos online with captions mocking and humiliating me.I knew it was time to fight back. This time... I had to do it differently.I climbed to the roof of one of the campus buildings. It did not take long before almost everyone on campus knew about me. Everyone on campus knew about the freshman named Maverick whose father had moved near the university just to keep an eye on him.Everything in my life was under his control, from what I ate and wore to who I spent time with and even where I went. Nothing happened without Dad's approval. Before long, my roommates started keeping their distance. No one invited me to class anymore, and no one asked me to grab lunch with them. Every time I walked across campus, I could hear people whispering behind my back."That's him, isn't it? The guy who couldn't even leave his dad after coming to college.""His dad controls every part of his life. Has he ever even lived on his own?""I heard his dad works as a security guard here. He watches him every single day. That's honestly creepy."Eventually, even the dorm supervisor asked to speak with me. She hoped I could resolve the situation as soon as possible so it would not conti

I had already earned most of my tuition through part-time jobs. Between that and my scholarship, I had more than enough to cover the rest. Once I got to the Northeast, I could keep working, support myself, and never have to spend another dollar of his money. Most importantly, I would finally be free of his control. The day I left for college, Dad insisted on coming with me. I did not want him to. However, he held tightly onto my suitcase, saying it was my first time traveling so far from home and he could not stop worrying about me.In the end, I could not talk him out of it.Several hours later, we finally arrived in the Northeast.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I headed to the admissions office to complete my enrollment. Dad stayed by my side the entire time, running back and forth. He looked even busier than I was.By the time I moved everything into my dorm room and finished unpacking, it was already afternoon.I pulled out my phone, ready to buy him a ticket home. "Dad, I'

When I was at my lowest, no one spoke up for me.When my wife cheated on me and beat me, no one stood by my side. When I jumped off that rooftop, no one asked if it had hurt. Why was I the one who always had to be the bigger person?During this period, I ate when I was hungry and slept when I was tired. Life could not have felt more carefree. The chaos outside my bedroom might as well have had nothing to do with me.I knew that as long as I held out until my admission papers arrived, there would be nothing Dad could do.Half a month later, it finally arrived. The delivery driver knocked on the front door. I heard Dad answer it and sign for the package. Then came the sound of paper being ripped apart. It was loud and violent. He was tearing them open with all his strength."Maverick! Get out here!" He pounded on my bedroom door, his voice dripping with hatred. When I opened the door, I saw him holding the admission packet in shredded pieces. Bits of paper slipped through his fi
