Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Pumpkin Scoop
The cold handle of the knife rested against my palm.

"Dad, you keep saying that if I don't stay here, I'll be driving you to your death. However, have you ever stopped to think about me?"

He opened his mouth. Not a single word came out.

"My grades are good enough to get into one of the best colleges in the country. They're good enough for me to study out of state and major in something I actually love.

"But you insist on making me stay here and attend an ordinary local college I never wanted. Dad, that's not what's best for me, that's destroying my future. The person who's really cornering me...is you."

The moment those words left my mouth, the expression on Dad's face went blank. It was as if, for the first time, he was really seeing me. For the first time, he realized that the son who had always obeyed him had been carrying that much resentment all along.

Then he exploded.

"I'm cornering you? Maverick, do you even have a conscience? I fed you, clothed you, and sacrificed everything for you! And now, you're saying I'm the one ruining your life? Fine! I'll die right now! Maybe then you'll finally be happy!"

He shouted as he charged toward the balcony in an exaggerated panic.

However, I knew he was not going to jump. This was simply the most effective way he knew to force me into giving in.

When he saw that I did not move, he started yelling even louder.

A few moments later, someone next door pounded on the wall. Then the neighbor across the hall threw open a window and shouted, "Would you keep it down? It's the middle of the night! Some of us are trying to sleep! If you don't stop, I'm calling the police!"

Dad's voice caught in his throat. He stood frozen by the balcony, unable to move forward or back. His face shifted between red and pale with embarrassment.

Finally, he shot me a vicious glare, stormed back to his room, and slammed the door so hard the whole apartment shook.

At last... the apartment was quiet.

However, I knew it was not over.

The next morning, Dad was already gone when I woke up.

I barely gave it a second thought. After getting dressed, I headed out to look for a part-time job.

College was expensive. Although my scholarship covered my tuition, I refused to keep relying on him for my living expenses. More importantly, if I wanted to change my future, I had to start building a safety net of my own.

By the time I got home after spending the entire afternoon job hunting, it was already 5:30 pm.

I walked to my bedroom, grabbed the doorknob, and pushed the door open. My laptop was gone.

"Where's my laptop?"

"Oh, that?" Dad casually dropped some vegetables onto a plate without even looking up.

"I accidentally knocked over a cup of water this morning. It spilled all over your laptop. So, I took it to a repair shop. The technician said they need to inspect it first. It'll probably be a few days."

A knot formed in my stomach. Something felt very wrong.

I did not argue with him. Instead, I turned around and went straight back to my room. I immediately pulled out my phone and logged into the college application portal.

I entered my password. A bright red message flashed across the screen: [Incorrect password. Please try again.]

I entered the password three more times. Every attempt came back wrong. My hands started to tremble.

Doing my best to stay calm, I walked back out of my room. Holding my phone, I stopped in front of Dad and held the screen up for him to see.

Fighting to keep my anger under control, I asked, "What's going on? What did you really do with my laptop today?"

He turned off the faucet. After shaking the water from his hands, he wiped them on his apron and looked at me as if everything he had done was perfectly reasonable.

"Applying to college is a huge decision. Of course, I had to make sure you chose wisely. You're still young. What do you know? A college's reputation isn't what matters, the important thing is your major and the career you'll have afterward.

"I even paid for an admissions counselor to evaluate your options today. They helped me pick the best college and the best major for you. They're all local colleges with medical programs. You'll become a doctor. It's a stable career with great pay.

"I've already accepted an offer for you, so you don't have to worry about it anymore."

I could hardly believe what I was hearing. He had actually made the decision for me.

My voice trembled with rage. "What gives you the right to decide which college I attend? Who told you that you could accept an offer on my behalf? Give me the account and password. Right now."

  • Every Time He Climbed   Chapter 13

I looked Dad straight in the eye. With the last bit of strength I had left, I gave him my clearest, coldest, and most desperate warning I had given since my rebirth."Dad, don't even think about following me this time. If you try to come after me again, or interfere with my life in any way... you can find out for yourself whether I'd be willing to jump from an even higher place this time."The hand holding the exchange application trembled like a leaf in the fall wind.Dad stared into my eyes. The determination and the emptiness, they pierced through the last illusion he had been clinging to like an icy blade. At last, he understood. The son who had obeyed him since childhood was gone. He had died beneath years of relentless control and he had died on that rooftop, in the freezing wind. The person standing before him was no longer the son he remembered. It was someone else. A soul covered in scars. Someone who had been driven to the edge, someone willing to risk everything just t

"N-No... That's not true..." Dad shook his head frantically. His face had gone as white as paper as he instinctively took a step backward. It was as if that single sheet of paper weighed a thousand pounds. As if it burned too much for him to bear."I was doing it for his own good... I was just afraid he'd get hurt... I was afraid he'd make the wrong choices... I'm his father!""That's exactly why your actions have affected him so deeply." The counselor's voice softened, but her resolve did not. "Love is not control. It is not surveillance, and it should never come at the cost of a child's independence or mental well-being."Real love is built on respect, and it's knowing when to let go. It's allowing him to become the person he wants to be. Even if he falls, even if he takes the long way around, because that is his life to live."What you need to do now isn't watch over him even more closely. You need to step back. Give him space and support his treatment. And honestly, I believe

The comments section was almost completely one-sided. Every single commenter was attacking me.[What's wrong with young people these days? His father quit his job and moved near the university just to take care of him, and he still wants to drive his own dad away?][What an ungrateful brat. His father sacrificed so much for him, and this is how he repays him?][Someone like him doesn't deserve a father like that.]It did not take long before people dug up my name, my major, and even the college I attended. They flooded the school's official social media accounts, demanding that the university punish me. Some even demanded that I be expelled.Soon, my private messages were overflowing with hateful comments. People even came to my dorm building to secretly take pictures of me. They posted the photos online with captions mocking and humiliating me.I knew it was time to fight back. This time... I had to do it differently.I climbed to the roof of one of the campus buildings. It did not take long before almost everyone on campus knew about me. Everyone on campus knew about the freshman named Maverick whose father had moved near the university just to keep an eye on him.Everything in my life was under his control, from what I ate and wore to who I spent time with and even where I went. Nothing happened without Dad's approval. Before long, my roommates started keeping their distance. No one invited me to class anymore, and no one asked me to grab lunch with them. Every time I walked across campus, I could hear people whispering behind my back."That's him, isn't it? The guy who couldn't even leave his dad after coming to college.""His dad controls every part of his life. Has he ever even lived on his own?""I heard his dad works as a security guard here. He watches him every single day. That's honestly creepy."Eventually, even the dorm supervisor asked to speak with me. She hoped I could resolve the situation as soon as possible so it would not conti

I had already earned most of my tuition through part-time jobs. Between that and my scholarship, I had more than enough to cover the rest. Once I got to the Northeast, I could keep working, support myself, and never have to spend another dollar of his money. Most importantly, I would finally be free of his control. The day I left for college, Dad insisted on coming with me. I did not want him to. However, he held tightly onto my suitcase, saying it was my first time traveling so far from home and he could not stop worrying about me.In the end, I could not talk him out of it.Several hours later, we finally arrived in the Northeast.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I headed to the admissions office to complete my enrollment. Dad stayed by my side the entire time, running back and forth. He looked even busier than I was.By the time I moved everything into my dorm room and finished unpacking, it was already afternoon.I pulled out my phone, ready to buy him a ticket home. "Dad, I'

When I was at my lowest, no one spoke up for me.When my wife cheated on me and beat me, no one stood by my side. When I jumped off that rooftop, no one asked if it had hurt. Why was I the one who always had to be the bigger person?During this period, I ate when I was hungry and slept when I was tired. Life could not have felt more carefree. The chaos outside my bedroom might as well have had nothing to do with me.I knew that as long as I held out until my admission papers arrived, there would be nothing Dad could do.Half a month later, it finally arrived. The delivery driver knocked on the front door. I heard Dad answer it and sign for the package. Then came the sound of paper being ripped apart. It was loud and violent. He was tearing them open with all his strength."Maverick! Get out here!" He pounded on my bedroom door, his voice dripping with hatred. When I opened the door, I saw him holding the admission packet in shredded pieces. Bits of paper slipped through his fi
