Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Pumpkin Scoop
"That's more like my son. You're still young, so all you think about is going out into the world. In a few years, you'll understand why I've done all this. Isn't staying here so much better? I can take care of you. If you move out of state, who's going to look after you?"

Dad's hand was warm as he held mine tightly.

In my previous life, he had held my hand the same way while telling me, "I'm only doing this for your own good."

Then I spent my days at an auto repair shop, working under the blazing sun in the summer and freezing winds in the winter. My hands cracked from the cold, and I earned only 3,000 dollars a month.

I was betrayed by the woman I loved. She smashed a vase over my head.

I let Dad keep holding my hand. I did not pull away. I simply lowered my head and answered quietly, "Okay."

For the next two days, I became the perfect son.

He checked my college application account at least twice a day to make sure I had not changed any of the enrollment decisions.

I never complained.

Sometimes, I even leaned over to look at the screen with him and said, "Dad, the medical program you picked actually looks pretty good."

Every day, I went grocery shopping with him, cooked alongside him, massaged his shoulders, and rubbed his legs whenever he asked. Whatever he told me to do, I did it without a word of protest.

Little by little, he finally let his guard down.

Whenever he called our relatives, he sounded happier than ever. He proudly told everyone that I had finally grown up, that I finally understood how much he cared about me.

On the night of the enrollment deadline, after dinner, I casually said, "Dad, my classmates told me there's supposed to be a meteor shower over the hills outside town tonight. I'd like to go watch it.

"If you're worried about me, you can even keep my phone, or you can come with me."

He blinked, clearly surprised that I was asking for permission to do something. He took my phone and spent several minutes going through it.

Finding nothing suspicious, he looked at the excitement on my face and finally nodded.

"Fine. I'll go with you, just to make sure you don't run off."

It was only a little after 9:00 pm when we reached the hilltop. Quite a few people were already there, waiting for the meteor shower.

I sat quietly beside him, chatting as usual. I gave away nothing.

At 11:40 pm, I tugged gently on his sleeve. "Dad, I need to use the restroom."

Afraid I might try something, he followed me and waited outside the entrance.

As soon as I stepped into the last stall, I locked the door. Then I reached into the hidden pocket inside my jeans and pulled out an old phone.

It was the one I had used in high school. The cellular service had long since been canceled, but it could still connect to Wi-Fi. I powered it on as fast as I could, connected to the public Wi-Fi at the scenic overlook, and opened a cloud-based notes app.

Inside was a complicated password… A phone number. I dialed it. The call connected after three rings.

"Hello?" A young man's voice answered.

"It's me." I lowered my voice. "It's time."

With that, I hung up.

My heart pounded so hard it echoed in my ears. My palms were soaked with sweat. After taking several deep breaths, I slipped the phone back into the hidden pocket, flushed the toilet, and walked out of the stall.

Dad was waiting outside. The moment he saw me, he looked me up and down.

"What took you so long?"

"My stomach wasn't feeling great." I rubbed my stomach.

He did not ask any more questions. He just urged me to hurry back.

By the time we returned to our spot, the clock had just passed midnight. Dad let out a long sigh of relief.

A victorious smile spread across his face.

"That's it. The application system is closed now. Everything's settled. Now, all you have to do is wait for the acceptance letter from the local medical school."

I turned to look at him. In the faint glow of the distant lights, his face looked soft and blurred, filled with the satisfaction of someone who believed everything had gone exactly as planned.

I smiled too.

"Yeah, Dad." My voice drifted into the night breeze, soft but unmistakably clear. "Everything's settled. I'm definitely going to that out-of-state college."

I looked Dad straight in the eye. With the last bit of strength I had left, I gave him my clearest, coldest, and most desperate warning I had given since my rebirth."Dad, don't even think about following me this time. If you try to come after me again, or interfere with my life in any way... you can find out for yourself whether I'd be willing to jump from an even higher place this time."The hand holding the exchange application trembled like a leaf in the fall wind.Dad stared into my eyes. The determination and the emptiness, they pierced through the last illusion he had been clinging to like an icy blade. At last, he understood. The son who had obeyed him since childhood was gone. He had died beneath years of relentless control and he had died on that rooftop, in the freezing wind. The person standing before him was no longer the son he remembered. It was someone else. A soul covered in scars. Someone who had been driven to the edge, someone willing to risk everything just t

"N-No... That's not true..." Dad shook his head frantically. His face had gone as white as paper as he instinctively took a step backward. It was as if that single sheet of paper weighed a thousand pounds. As if it burned too much for him to bear."I was doing it for his own good... I was just afraid he'd get hurt... I was afraid he'd make the wrong choices... I'm his father!""That's exactly why your actions have affected him so deeply." The counselor's voice softened, but her resolve did not. "Love is not control. It is not surveillance, and it should never come at the cost of a child's independence or mental well-being."Real love is built on respect, and it's knowing when to let go. It's allowing him to become the person he wants to be. Even if he falls, even if he takes the long way around, because that is his life to live."What you need to do now isn't watch over him even more closely. You need to step back. Give him space and support his treatment. And honestly, I believe

The comments section was almost completely one-sided. Every single commenter was attacking me.[What's wrong with young people these days? His father quit his job and moved near the university just to take care of him, and he still wants to drive his own dad away?][What an ungrateful brat. His father sacrificed so much for him, and this is how he repays him?][Someone like him doesn't deserve a father like that.]It did not take long before people dug up my name, my major, and even the college I attended. They flooded the school's official social media accounts, demanding that the university punish me. Some even demanded that I be expelled.Soon, my private messages were overflowing with hateful comments. People even came to my dorm building to secretly take pictures of me. They posted the photos online with captions mocking and humiliating me.I knew it was time to fight back. This time... I had to do it differently.I climbed to the roof of one of the campus buildings. It did not take long before almost everyone on campus knew about me. Everyone on campus knew about the freshman named Maverick whose father had moved near the university just to keep an eye on him.Everything in my life was under his control, from what I ate and wore to who I spent time with and even where I went. Nothing happened without Dad's approval. Before long, my roommates started keeping their distance. No one invited me to class anymore, and no one asked me to grab lunch with them. Every time I walked across campus, I could hear people whispering behind my back."That's him, isn't it? The guy who couldn't even leave his dad after coming to college.""His dad controls every part of his life. Has he ever even lived on his own?""I heard his dad works as a security guard here. He watches him every single day. That's honestly creepy."Eventually, even the dorm supervisor asked to speak with me. She hoped I could resolve the situation as soon as possible so it would not conti

I had already earned most of my tuition through part-time jobs. Between that and my scholarship, I had more than enough to cover the rest. Once I got to the Northeast, I could keep working, support myself, and never have to spend another dollar of his money. Most importantly, I would finally be free of his control. The day I left for college, Dad insisted on coming with me. I did not want him to. However, he held tightly onto my suitcase, saying it was my first time traveling so far from home and he could not stop worrying about me.In the end, I could not talk him out of it.Several hours later, we finally arrived in the Northeast.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I headed to the admissions office to complete my enrollment. Dad stayed by my side the entire time, running back and forth. He looked even busier than I was.By the time I moved everything into my dorm room and finished unpacking, it was already afternoon.I pulled out my phone, ready to buy him a ticket home. "Dad, I'

When I was at my lowest, no one spoke up for me.When my wife cheated on me and beat me, no one stood by my side. When I jumped off that rooftop, no one asked if it had hurt. Why was I the one who always had to be the bigger person?During this period, I ate when I was hungry and slept when I was tired. Life could not have felt more carefree. The chaos outside my bedroom might as well have had nothing to do with me.I knew that as long as I held out until my admission papers arrived, there would be nothing Dad could do.Half a month later, it finally arrived. The delivery driver knocked on the front door. I heard Dad answer it and sign for the package. Then came the sound of paper being ripped apart. It was loud and violent. He was tearing them open with all his strength."Maverick! Get out here!" He pounded on my bedroom door, his voice dripping with hatred. When I opened the door, I saw him holding the admission packet in shredded pieces. Bits of paper slipped through his fi
