Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Pumpkin Scoop
The moment he heard that, he slipped right back into playing the victim. Pointing a finger at me, he shouted.

"Tell you? So, you can secretly change it back to one of those out-of-state colleges? Not a chance! If you dare change it back, then I'm not your father anymore! From this day on, I'll act like I never had a son!"

I had heard those words too many times.

In my previous life, every time he said them, I would give in. I would plead with him, and I would compromise.

This time, I simply looked at him for a few seconds. Then I turned around, yanked the front door open, and ran outside.

"Maverick! Where are you going? Get back here!" His shouts were cut off as the door slammed behind me.

I had barely made it out of our apartment complex when my phone rang. It was my mom's sister, Aunt Emily. Without a word, I declined the call. A few seconds later, it rang again. This time, it was my uncle. Then another call came in and another.

Soon, it was my other uncle... then my cousin.

Even the family group chat exploded with messages.

[Maverick, how could you treat your father like this? Do you know how hard it was for him to raise you all by himself?]

[We heard you're insisting on going to college out of state. Why go so far away? Wouldn't it be better to stay here with your dad?]

The messages kept pouring in, each one telling me to be sensible and listen to my father. I stared at the screen and almost laughed.

Years ago, Aunt Emily's son had been accepted to an excellent university. He was planning to study computer science out of state.

Aunt Emily cried, screamed, and even threatened to kill herself to stop him from leaving. The following year, she pressured him into getting married. Not long after his wife gave birth, she ran off with another man.

He ended up raising the child alone and never managed to find a stable job. Even now, he still lived with his mother, numbing himself with alcohol every day.

Somehow... Aunt Emily still had the nerve to tell me to compromise. Still, I knew that was not the right time to confront Dad head-on. There were three days left before the enrollment deadline.

Even if I managed to reset my password and switch my acceptance back, he would only make another scene.

Sitting alone in a pavilion at the park, I absentmindedly scrolled through social media. Then one photo caught my eye. It was from a graduate one year ahead of me. He had posted a picture celebrating his award at the National Computer Science Competition.

My eyes lit up. Slowly... a plan began to take shape.

Just after I finished sending him a message, my phone rang again. This time, it was my father's younger sister, Aunt Linda.

I answered.

"Maverick! Where are you?" Aunt Linda sounded panicked. "Get to the hospital! Your dad passed out!"

By the time I arrived, Dad had already regained consciousness. He was lying against the hospital bed, pale-faced, hooked up to an IV.

The moment he saw me, he let out an icy snort and turned his head away. "What are you doing here? I don't have a son."

"Oh, come on, don't say that!" Aunt Linda quickly stepped in to smooth things over, pulling out a chair for me.

"Maverick rushed over the second he heard you were in the hospital. Maverick, your father spent the entire day running around because of you. He didn't eat a single thing, and he pushed himself so hard that he collapsed. Can't you be a little more understanding?"

I had heard that routine countless times before. Every time, family ties and guilt would weigh so heavily on me that I could barely breathe.

In the end... I always backed down.

However, this time was different. I knew I had to take one step back first.

For my future.

To lower Dad's guard, I had to pretend to give in.

Keeping my head lowered, I dug my fingernails into my palm and said in a hoarse voice, "I understand."

The hospital room fell silent for a few seconds. Dad slowly turned to look at me, suspicion filling his eyes.

"I know I shouldn't have made you so angry," I continued, my voice weary and resigned. "As for college... I'll go wherever you want me to."

Dad's eyes lit up instantly. "Really? You'll stay here and go to college here?"

A bitter smile crossed my face. "What choice do I have? You ended up in the hospital because of this. You already changed my password. What else can I do?"

"That's more like it!" Aunt Linda clapped her hands happily. "Maverick, now you've got it! Your dad would never hurt you. Everything he's done has been for your own good!"

Dad beamed. He reached over and patted the back of my hand, his voice unusually gentle.

I looked Dad straight in the eye. With the last bit of strength I had left, I gave him my clearest, coldest, and most desperate warning I had given since my rebirth."Dad, don't even think about following me this time. If you try to come after me again, or interfere with my life in any way... you can find out for yourself whether I'd be willing to jump from an even higher place this time."The hand holding the exchange application trembled like a leaf in the fall wind.Dad stared into my eyes. The determination and the emptiness, they pierced through the last illusion he had been clinging to like an icy blade. At last, he understood. The son who had obeyed him since childhood was gone. He had died beneath years of relentless control and he had died on that rooftop, in the freezing wind. The person standing before him was no longer the son he remembered. It was someone else. A soul covered in scars. Someone who had been driven to the edge, someone willing to risk everything just t

"N-No... That's not true..." Dad shook his head frantically. His face had gone as white as paper as he instinctively took a step backward. It was as if that single sheet of paper weighed a thousand pounds. As if it burned too much for him to bear."I was doing it for his own good... I was just afraid he'd get hurt... I was afraid he'd make the wrong choices... I'm his father!""That's exactly why your actions have affected him so deeply." The counselor's voice softened, but her resolve did not. "Love is not control. It is not surveillance, and it should never come at the cost of a child's independence or mental well-being."Real love is built on respect, and it's knowing when to let go. It's allowing him to become the person he wants to be. Even if he falls, even if he takes the long way around, because that is his life to live."What you need to do now isn't watch over him even more closely. You need to step back. Give him space and support his treatment. And honestly, I believe

The comments section was almost completely one-sided. Every single commenter was attacking me.[What's wrong with young people these days? His father quit his job and moved near the university just to take care of him, and he still wants to drive his own dad away?][What an ungrateful brat. His father sacrificed so much for him, and this is how he repays him?][Someone like him doesn't deserve a father like that.]It did not take long before people dug up my name, my major, and even the college I attended. They flooded the school's official social media accounts, demanding that the university punish me. Some even demanded that I be expelled.Soon, my private messages were overflowing with hateful comments. People even came to my dorm building to secretly take pictures of me. They posted the photos online with captions mocking and humiliating me.I knew it was time to fight back. This time... I had to do it differently.I climbed to the roof of one of the campus buildings. It did not take long before almost everyone on campus knew about me. Everyone on campus knew about the freshman named Maverick whose father had moved near the university just to keep an eye on him.Everything in my life was under his control, from what I ate and wore to who I spent time with and even where I went. Nothing happened without Dad's approval. Before long, my roommates started keeping their distance. No one invited me to class anymore, and no one asked me to grab lunch with them. Every time I walked across campus, I could hear people whispering behind my back."That's him, isn't it? The guy who couldn't even leave his dad after coming to college.""His dad controls every part of his life. Has he ever even lived on his own?""I heard his dad works as a security guard here. He watches him every single day. That's honestly creepy."Eventually, even the dorm supervisor asked to speak with me. She hoped I could resolve the situation as soon as possible so it would not conti

I had already earned most of my tuition through part-time jobs. Between that and my scholarship, I had more than enough to cover the rest. Once I got to the Northeast, I could keep working, support myself, and never have to spend another dollar of his money. Most importantly, I would finally be free of his control. The day I left for college, Dad insisted on coming with me. I did not want him to. However, he held tightly onto my suitcase, saying it was my first time traveling so far from home and he could not stop worrying about me.In the end, I could not talk him out of it.Several hours later, we finally arrived in the Northeast.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I headed to the admissions office to complete my enrollment. Dad stayed by my side the entire time, running back and forth. He looked even busier than I was.By the time I moved everything into my dorm room and finished unpacking, it was already afternoon.I pulled out my phone, ready to buy him a ticket home. "Dad, I'

When I was at my lowest, no one spoke up for me.When my wife cheated on me and beat me, no one stood by my side. When I jumped off that rooftop, no one asked if it had hurt. Why was I the one who always had to be the bigger person?During this period, I ate when I was hungry and slept when I was tired. Life could not have felt more carefree. The chaos outside my bedroom might as well have had nothing to do with me.I knew that as long as I held out until my admission papers arrived, there would be nothing Dad could do.Half a month later, it finally arrived. The delivery driver knocked on the front door. I heard Dad answer it and sign for the package. Then came the sound of paper being ripped apart. It was loud and violent. He was tearing them open with all his strength."Maverick! Get out here!" He pounded on my bedroom door, his voice dripping with hatred. When I opened the door, I saw him holding the admission packet in shredded pieces. Bits of paper slipped through his fi
