Chapter 2

Penulis: Wedding Seven
The smile on Elaine's face instantly froze. She sat upright and stared at Nancy and me. "Jordan, what the hell is wrong with you?"

Her brows drew together, and her voice was thick with irritation. "Are you seriously doing this just to piss me off? Just because I said a few things about you? It was a joke. You're a grown man. Can't you take a joke?"

I ignored her completely.

Nancy did not hesitate. She set down her glass, pulled out her phone, and followed me back on social media.

My phone gave a soft chime. We were officially connected.

"It's getting late. We can talk another time." I gave her a slight nod.

"Okay." Nancy's voice was crisp and straightforward.

"Who told you to add her? Are you incapable of understanding plain English?" Elaine's voice suddenly rose, sharp with anger. She kicked the tempered-glass coffee table in front of her, making a heavy thud that echoed through the room. Several bottles toppled over, spilling alcohol across the table and floor.

She stormed toward me and reached for my arm, but I stepped aside, avoiding her grasp. My expression remained cold as I turned and fixed her with an icy stare.

"Elaine, your jokes are not funny. Who I add is none of your business. Who are you to me anyway?"

"You..." Elaine's hand froze in midair. Her cheeks flushed with anger.

I ignored her stunned expression, turned around, and pushed open the door.

Behind me came the sound of Elaine angrily slamming the door, followed by her friends trying to calm her down.

I walked into the warm summer night and took a deep breath. For the first time in a long while, I felt completely free.

When our final exam results came out, the entire class group chat exploded.

I had done extremely well. My score was more than enough to get me into one of the top universities in the country.

Elaine scored about ten points lower than me. Based on the admission scores from previous years, she had just enough to get into the best university in town, Apex University.

Everyone had known for the past three years that Elaine wanted to go to a local university. More than once, she had said to me in that condescending, almost charitable tone of hers, "Jordan, with your stiff personality, I suppose I can keep an eye on you if you go to Apex University."

Hence, when the results came out, everyone naturally assumed I would choose Apex University for Elaine's sake.

The messages in the group chat kept pouring in when Elaine suddenly posted a photo. She was standing in front of the gates of Apex University with Lawrence Shaw, the famous heartthrob from the class next door.

Lawrence had a bright, confident smile on his face. Elaine was looking at the camera with a smile in her eyes.

The group chat instantly went wild.

[Holy crap! What's going on with Elaine? Did she go to Apex University with Lawrence to check out the campus?]

[Elaine is totally forcing Jordan to make a choice! If he doesn't pick Apex University, someone else is going to steal her away!]

[Exactly! This is such an obvious move. She's clearly waiting for him to say something.]

I stared at my phone and almost laughed.

This was what they called devotion? Using another guy's feelings to test me and pressure me into giving in?

The funny thing was, I had already decided which university I wanted to attend.

A few days later, the school invited graduating seniors back to campus to confirm their universities and majors. The hallways were packed with students. Everyone stood around in small groups, excitedly talking about starting their university lives.

I had my completed enrollment confirmation form in my hand and was on my way to the office to get the counselor's signature. I had just reached the corner of the stairwell when an arm suddenly shot out in front of me, blocking my path.

It was Elaine. She was not wearing her school uniform today. Instead, she had dressed in an expensive designer outfit that made her look even more spoiled and intimidating.

Lawrence was standing beside her.

"Why were you walking so fast? Trying to avoid me?" Elaine gave a mocking laugh and snatched the form right out of my hand without even asking.

I frowned. "Give it back."

Elaine deliberately stood in front of me, keeping the form out of my reach. Then she glanced down at my choice. The next second, she burst out laughing.

"Physics at Westbridge University? Jordan, are you out of your mind?" She waved my form in the air like she was telling everyone some ridiculous joke.

"Why did you choose physics? Are you planning to spend your whole life locked in a lab as some bald scientist? Just look at you. You already look like a walking corpse. And now, you want to study physics too? What girl is ever going to want you?"

As she spoke, Elaine pointed at Lawrence beside her.

"Look at Lawrence. He chose art history. Now, that is a major for a guy with taste. It teaches you culture and sophistication, and you can actually be proud to take someone like that out."

She looked back at me with a smug smile. "Why can't you learn from him and develop a little appreciation for the finer things in life?"

A few days later, Elaine was officially expelled from her university. As she was suspected of defamation, she was detained for several days and was left with a criminal record.I heard that her parents rushed to the city overnight. After dealing with everything at the police station, they gave her a serious beating and then sent her away to another university in another state. After that, Elaine disappeared from my world completely. Along with her went the part of my teenage years that had once made me sick to my stomach. I buried it all in the past and never looked back.…Five years passed in the blink of an eye.Nancy and I both graduated from Westbridge University with PhDs in physics. On graduation day, we obtained our marriage certificate, and Nancy officially became my wife. There was no elaborate wedding, just a simple dinner with both of our families.Nancy used the money from her first patent bonus to make the down payment on a home in the capital city, giving us a p

I stared at the vicious speculation filling the screen, my expression turning grim.Nancy, however, remained calm. She patted my shoulder."Don't panic. We ran every set of data ourselves, and we still have all the original records. There's no way they can fake those."That afternoon, just as we were preparing to submit our evidence to the competition committee, I received a call from an unknown number. The voice on the other end was Elaine's, filled with barely restrained excitement and a twisted sense of triumph."Jordan, did you see the post on the forum?"My grip tightened around my phone. "You did this?""So what if I did?" Elaine sneered through the phone. "Isn't Nancy supposed to be some genius? The top student everyone worships? I want to see how she plans to stay in academia with a record of academic fraud hanging over her head!""Elaine, you're insane! What you did is a crime!""So what if I'm insane?" she screamed. "Why do you two get to shine at Westbridge Universit

Nancy calmly straightened the sleeve that had been wrinkled when Elaine grabbed her. She looked at Elaine the way someone might look at a ridiculous clown throwing a tantrum."Three years as his desk mate?" Nancy let out an icy laugh. Her voice carried clearly through the now-quiet tree-lined path."Elaine, what right do you have to bring up those three years? In those three years, besides putting him down in front of everyone, humiliating him, tearing up his notes, and making fun of his appearance, what exactly did you ever do for him?"Elaine stood frozen, her face shifting from red to white. Her lips moved as she tried to come up with a response, but Nancy cut her off without mercy."Jordan is focused, intelligent, and determined. He has an incredible talent for physics and a clear goal for his future. He's an exceptional young man."Nancy turned to me, her eyes warm with affection. Then she faced Elaine again, her gaze sharp and unwavering."You were never good enough for him

"Jordan, have you no shame?"Elaine snapped back to reality, her eyes locked on Nancy's hand as she wiped the sweat from my forehead. Her eyes were practically bloodshot. She rushed toward us, like a wild animal whose territory had been invaded."What are you doing, hanging all over this painfully quiet girl? It's just your first day of university, and you're already that desperate to hook up?"Elaine pointed at Nancy, her voice loud enough to draw the attention of several nearby freshmen.I looked at Elaine's face, twisted with jealousy and anger. She clearly thought I was deliberately using Nancy to make her jealous."I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?" When I ignored her, Elaine reached out to grab my arm. "Don't think you can put on some fake act with this nerd and fool me! Get rid of her!"Before her hand could touch me, Nancy stepped forward and firmly positioned herself between us, knocking Elaine's hand away."Please show some respect."Elaine curled her lips into a mock

Two months had passed, and it was now September. Early fall in the capital city was still hot and dry, and the campus of Westbridge University was covered with banners welcoming the new students. Freshmen dragged suitcases everywhere, while upperclassmen hurried around helping them find their way.I was pulling my suitcase along when I reached the boundary between the School of Business and the School of Science. That was when I spotted a tall, cool-looking figure in the distance. Nancy stood beneath the shade of a tree in a crisp white blouse. The moment she saw me, the coolness in her eyes softened. She walked toward me with long strides and naturally reached for the handle of my heaviest 28-inch suitcase."Are you tired from the trip?" she asked softly. She handed me a bottle of ice-cold water with the cap already twisted open."Not really. I'm fine." I took a sip, and much of the fatigue from the journey seemed to disappear. For the past two months, we had chatted almost ev

The students around us started craning their necks to see what was going on. Every notebook was covered inside and out with ugly drawings of turtles and pig faces, along with insults like 'nerd', 'ugly freak', and 'sissy'."This is what you call looking out for me?" My gaze turned icy as I stared straight at Elaine."I wear clean, decent clothes, and you mock me in front of the entire class, saying I look like some tasteless old-fashioned nerd."I came in first in the citywide math competition, and you went around telling everyone I had studied so hard I was practically going bald. You even hinted that I might have cheated."My notes were something I worked hard on. You snatched them away and scribbled all over them. You even tore up pages I had spent so much time writing!"My voice remained calm, but every word carried more weight than the last, as if I were finally dumping all the anger and hurt I had buried for three years right in front of her."Every single day, you acted li
