Chapter 4

Penulis: Wedding Seven
Elaine's eyes darted away. She cleared her throat awkwardly. "I was really thirsty, okay? So, I took a sip first."

As she spoke, the blush on her cheeks deepened. The crowd fell silent.

Someone nearby finally could not hold back and muttered, "Seriously? She's confessing with half a cup of leftover milkshake? That's so cheap."

Elaine's face stiffened. One of her friends quickly stepped in to smooth things over.

"Oh, what do you guys know? This is Elaine's way of being romantic! It's basically an indirect kiss. Elaine is such a genius!"

"Exactly! An indirect kiss! That is so romantic!"

A chill crept into my heart.

Elaine was already furious and embarrassed by her friends' teasing. She reached out to shove one of the girls, but something suddenly slipped from her pocket and hit the concrete with a sharp thud.

It was a delicate black velvet box. The lid popped open, revealing a limited-edition men's watch inside, its metal surface gleaming in the sunlight.

Everyone's eyes lit up, and the crowd immediately started cheering again.

"Holy crap! Elaine, so the milkshake was just a cover?"

"I knew it! There's no way Elaine would be that cheap. This must be the real gift she bought for her confession! Hurry up and put it on Jordan!"

A flash of panic crossed Elaine's eyes. She dropped into a crouch as if she had been shocked by electricity, quickly snatched up the black box, and squeezed it tightly in her hand.

"What are you guys cheering about? Who said this was for him? It's for Lawrence!"

Elaine stubbornly lifted her chin and glanced at me. "Jordan is going to Westbridge University, and he's studying physics. He's stiff as a board and has no personality. Does he even deserve to wear a watch like this?

"I bought this for Lawrence! He is staying here and going to Apex University. He's studying art history, he's handsome, and he has style. Someone like him is the only person worthy of something this nice!"

Lawrence's sour expression instantly brightened. He lowered his head slightly and gave Elaine a soft, warm look.

Meanwhile, everyone around us turned toward me. Their eyes were filled with sympathy, amusement, and the excitement of watching a good show.

I stood there, staring at Elaine's face. She was trying so hard to hide something that her expression had become almost twisted.

What exactly had I been expecting? That something beautiful could somehow grow out of a garbage can?

To protect her pathetic pride, she could trample my dignity into the dirt without a second thought.

Was saying she liked me really that difficult?

Suddenly, I felt completely at peace. I let out a self-mocking laugh and tossed the bag containing the half-finished milkshake straight into the trash can beside me. The cup hit the bottom, splashing the contents everywhere.

"You were right. I do not deserve it." With that, I turned and started to leave.

"Jordan, stop right there!"

The moment Elaine saw me walking away, she completely lost her temper. She rushed after me and blocked my path.

"What is with that attitude? Don't think you are so amazing just because you got into Westbridge University!" Her voice was full of anger and frustration. "With a boring, stiff personality like yours, no one will look out for you over there. People are going to walk all over you. You might even stay single until graduation!

"And once you can't handle it anymore, it'll be too late to come running back to me! I'm telling you, while you still have the chance, hurry up and change your choice back to Apex University."

"You're going to look out for me?" I stopped walking and looked straight down into her eyes. My gaze was calm, almost cold.

"Of course. If it were not for me during these past three years of high school..."

I did not wait for her to finish. Instead, I reached behind me, yanked open the heavy zipper of my backpack, and dumped the thick stack of papers inside onto the ground.

The sound of paper scattering across the pavement rang out clearly through the crowded school entrance.

The crowd erupted into a buzz.

A few boys who had no idea what was happening started whispering to each other.

"What is all that? There are so many papers. Could they be love letters Jordan wrote? Is he about to confess to Elaine?"

The moment Elaine heard that, the anger on her face eased, and a smug little smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She bent down to gather the papers scattered around her feet, but the moment she looked closely at one of them, she suddenly went still.

It was as if she had been struck by lightning. Elaine stared at the paper in disbelief, utterly stunned.

A few days later, Elaine was officially expelled from her university. As she was suspected of defamation, she was detained for several days and was left with a criminal record.I heard that her parents rushed to the city overnight. After dealing with everything at the police station, they gave her a serious beating and then sent her away to another university in another state. After that, Elaine disappeared from my world completely. Along with her went the part of my teenage years that had once made me sick to my stomach. I buried it all in the past and never looked back.…Five years passed in the blink of an eye.Nancy and I both graduated from Westbridge University with PhDs in physics. On graduation day, we obtained our marriage certificate, and Nancy officially became my wife. There was no elaborate wedding, just a simple dinner with both of our families.Nancy used the money from her first patent bonus to make the down payment on a home in the capital city, giving us a p

I stared at the vicious speculation filling the screen, my expression turning grim.Nancy, however, remained calm. She patted my shoulder."Don't panic. We ran every set of data ourselves, and we still have all the original records. There's no way they can fake those."That afternoon, just as we were preparing to submit our evidence to the competition committee, I received a call from an unknown number. The voice on the other end was Elaine's, filled with barely restrained excitement and a twisted sense of triumph."Jordan, did you see the post on the forum?"My grip tightened around my phone. "You did this?""So what if I did?" Elaine sneered through the phone. "Isn't Nancy supposed to be some genius? The top student everyone worships? I want to see how she plans to stay in academia with a record of academic fraud hanging over her head!""Elaine, you're insane! What you did is a crime!""So what if I'm insane?" she screamed. "Why do you two get to shine at Westbridge Universit

Nancy calmly straightened the sleeve that had been wrinkled when Elaine grabbed her. She looked at Elaine the way someone might look at a ridiculous clown throwing a tantrum."Three years as his desk mate?" Nancy let out an icy laugh. Her voice carried clearly through the now-quiet tree-lined path."Elaine, what right do you have to bring up those three years? In those three years, besides putting him down in front of everyone, humiliating him, tearing up his notes, and making fun of his appearance, what exactly did you ever do for him?"Elaine stood frozen, her face shifting from red to white. Her lips moved as she tried to come up with a response, but Nancy cut her off without mercy."Jordan is focused, intelligent, and determined. He has an incredible talent for physics and a clear goal for his future. He's an exceptional young man."Nancy turned to me, her eyes warm with affection. Then she faced Elaine again, her gaze sharp and unwavering."You were never good enough for him

"Jordan, have you no shame?"Elaine snapped back to reality, her eyes locked on Nancy's hand as she wiped the sweat from my forehead. Her eyes were practically bloodshot. She rushed toward us, like a wild animal whose territory had been invaded."What are you doing, hanging all over this painfully quiet girl? It's just your first day of university, and you're already that desperate to hook up?"Elaine pointed at Nancy, her voice loud enough to draw the attention of several nearby freshmen.I looked at Elaine's face, twisted with jealousy and anger. She clearly thought I was deliberately using Nancy to make her jealous."I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?" When I ignored her, Elaine reached out to grab my arm. "Don't think you can put on some fake act with this nerd and fool me! Get rid of her!"Before her hand could touch me, Nancy stepped forward and firmly positioned herself between us, knocking Elaine's hand away."Please show some respect."Elaine curled her lips into a mock

Two months had passed, and it was now September. Early fall in the capital city was still hot and dry, and the campus of Westbridge University was covered with banners welcoming the new students. Freshmen dragged suitcases everywhere, while upperclassmen hurried around helping them find their way.I was pulling my suitcase along when I reached the boundary between the School of Business and the School of Science. That was when I spotted a tall, cool-looking figure in the distance. Nancy stood beneath the shade of a tree in a crisp white blouse. The moment she saw me, the coolness in her eyes softened. She walked toward me with long strides and naturally reached for the handle of my heaviest 28-inch suitcase."Are you tired from the trip?" she asked softly. She handed me a bottle of ice-cold water with the cap already twisted open."Not really. I'm fine." I took a sip, and much of the fatigue from the journey seemed to disappear. For the past two months, we had chatted almost ev

The students around us started craning their necks to see what was going on. Every notebook was covered inside and out with ugly drawings of turtles and pig faces, along with insults like 'nerd', 'ugly freak', and 'sissy'."This is what you call looking out for me?" My gaze turned icy as I stared straight at Elaine."I wear clean, decent clothes, and you mock me in front of the entire class, saying I look like some tasteless old-fashioned nerd."I came in first in the citywide math competition, and you went around telling everyone I had studied so hard I was practically going bald. You even hinted that I might have cheated."My notes were something I worked hard on. You snatched them away and scribbled all over them. You even tore up pages I had spent so much time writing!"My voice remained calm, but every word carried more weight than the last, as if I were finally dumping all the anger and hurt I had buried for three years right in front of her."Every single day, you acted li
