Chapter 2

작가: Steal a Star Candy
During our lunch break, Ms. Wayland was called away to a meeting for the school anniversary festivities. The moment she left, Amber slid into the seat right next to mine.

"Rachel, before Cody left for the competition, did he hand anything to you?"

I didn't look up from the math problem I was working on as I answered, "No."

Technically, he didn't "hand" me the pile of stuff. It was more like he'd dumped it on me.

Yesterday afternoon, Cody had boarded the competition team's bus with his backpack slung over his shoulder. Right before he got on, he shoved two notebooks, a basketball jersey, and a debit card into my hands.

His reason had been perfectly valid—they were too heavy.

I, however, couldn't understand the logic. If those things were heavy in his hands, did they somehow magically lose gravitational force the second they went into my backpack?

Amber clearly didn't believe me. Taking advantage of the moment I got up to hand in my homework, she unzipped my backpack. The next second, my textbooks, tissues, and a half-eaten bag of chips spilled onto the floor, along with a black basketball jersey.

Her eyes lit up.

"What's this?"

I bent down to pick up my books. "You can see what it is."

"It's Cody's jersey. Why do you have it?"

"He asked me to wash it."

The entire classroom went dead silent while Amber's expression changed several times in rapid succession. Apparently, in her world, washing Cody's jersey wasn't a two-dollar chore—it was an entrance exam to becoming his future bride.

She quickly shoved the jersey into a clear plastic bag. "You already promised you'd stop bothering him, so I'll return this to him for you."

I was filled with sudden respect for her. Cody had played basketball in that jersey for two straight hours, and at one point, he'd even fallen into a puddle of mud. When I opened my backpack yesterday, every mosquito within a 30-foot radius evacuated the area. If Amber wanted to take it off my hands, I couldn't be happier.

Then, she reached into the side pocket and pulled out a debit card.

"That's for household expenses."

"You two are sharing a household account?" she retorted, letting out a cold laugh. "Rachel, have you already started fantasizing about marrying into the Ferrer family?"

I fell silent for a few seconds. "Is it possible that I meant a household in the most basic sense?"

The whole class lost it again. Matt took the debit card and announced with exaggerated seriousness, "This is stolen property. The student council should keep it for safekeeping."

I reached for it. "My allowance money is in there too."

"Liar," Amber snapped, staring at me. "Why on earth would Cody give you his card?"

"Because he's too lazy to carry it," I answered truthfully.

Whenever Cody wanted to buy something, he'd just ask me to get it and swipe the card. He was in charge of making the demands, and I was in charge of the legwork.

Mom called it sibling teamwork. I called it high-level parasitism.

Convinced that I was making excuses, Amber fished another set of keys from my bag.

"Are these Cody's house keys too?"

"They're mine too."

She walked over to the window. "Since you can't seem to break the habit of sneaking into the Ferrers' house, I'll help you."

My heart skipped a beat. "Don't do anything stupid."

She raised her hand and tossed the keys. They sailed through the air in a beautiful arc before landing straight in the artificial lake below. And with a splash, they were gone.

I rushed to the window and watched helplessly. They'd probably already sunk into the mud at the bottom of the lake.

"Amber Belknap!"

She covered her mouth. "Sorry, my hand slipped."

"Your hand slipped more than 30 feet?"

"It's really windy today."

Not a single leaf moved outside the window. That gust of wind was strictly blowing inside her head.

I went straight to the teacher's office to look for Ms. Wayland. However, she just told me that the debit card and the jersey would be returned to Cody in person when he came back. As for the keys, she said I should just have another copy made myself.

"Amber was only trying to protect a fellow student's property. You really shouldn't assume the worst about people."

I almost laughed from sheer frustration. Amber throwing my keys away was called "protecting property", yet me wanting to get my own debit card back made me "malicious".

Apparently, the school rules automatically updated themselves depending on how much a student's parents donated.

By the time I left the office, a new post had appeared on the campus forum.

"Stalker refuses to return school heartthrob's jersey, debit card, and house keys. She's suspected of having been illegally entering the Ferrers' house for months."

The attached photo showed Amber clutching Cody's jersey. She looked so emotional that one would think she was hugging an urn.

Right then, Amber walked up to me and whispered, "I'll personally return all of this to Cody tomorrow at the school's anniversary celebration. I'll make sure he knows just how disgusting you really are."

I glanced at the plastic bag in her arms. "You'd better seal that bag tight."

"Why?"

"The jersey reeks."

Her smile froze. A second later, a three-day-old stench drifted out. Her face turned sickly green as she lunged for the nearest trash can and started throwing up.

I stood beside her and thoughtfully patted her back.

"Don't mention it. You worked so hard to snatch it from me, after all."

After Amber received her disciplinary sanction, a new tradition suddenly started at school.Every single day, whenever I walked by with Cody, people would stare at the two of us, as if they were trying to spot proof that we were actually related. Some people said our eyebrows looked alike. Others said we had the exact same tone when we told people off. But one person summed it up best of all."They both have the same 'I couldn't care less if you die' kind of punchability."I wholeheartedly agreed with the first half, while Cody could take ownership of the "punchability" part.I got my phone, the debit card, and Cody's jersey back. The house keys, however, were never recovered from the bottom of the lake. The Belknaps paid for the locks to be replaced, along with my medical bills and the property damage. The school also revised its policy on the confiscation of student property by the student council. To put it simply, from now on, if anyone dared to confiscate someone else's hou

I listened to the recording three times. The first time, I was shocked. The second time, I was confused. By the third time, I was almost impressed. Because every single word in it had really come from my mouth. The thing was, they weren't spoken on the same day or in the same context."If Amber doesn't" was pulled from yesterday's meeting, "drop out of school" came from when I was trying to convince my deskmate not to quit our school's chess club, and "I'll make sure her reputation is completely ruined" was cobbled together from fragments of phrases I encountered while reading a passage aloud in literature class. The sheer amount of work the editor had put in was mind-boggling. To hate me to this extent took a truly terrifying level of dedication. After the recording was posted, public opinion swayed again.Amber also posted a photo from the hospital showing her wrist wrapped in gauze. She claimed she'd been subjected to cyberbullying and was now too scared to set foot on campus.

The moment she heard me mention the police, Mrs. Belknap's expression finally changed."It's just a minor squabble between classmates. Is that really necessary?" she demanded."Yes, it is," I answered, pointing to my still-shaking hand. "Your daughter's future may be valuable, but my life isn't cheap either."Mrs. Belknap was about to say something else when the principal, Mr. Previnksy, hurried over. He immediately had the students cleared out, then asked both families to meet in the conference room.Since my parents were still out of town, they could only join via video call.Just before stepping into the conference room, Amber suddenly grabbed my arm."Rachel," she said, her eyes red, her voice so low that only the two of us could hear. "Must you ruin my life?"I yanked my hand back. "You locked the door. You made the posts. You took my stuff. So how am I suddenly the bad guy the second the cops are involved?"She bit down on her lip. "I just like Cody, that's all."There i

The post never actually went live, but screenshots of it had already spread through the entire grade's group chats.Half an hour later, Amber's mother, Mrs. Belknap, arrived at school. The moment she rushed in, she pulled Amber into a hug before turning to me."You're the one bullying Amber?" she demanded.I looked down at myself. My clothes were dirty, and my arms were scratched up with splinters. My phone, debit card, and house keys were all still missing.Amber, meanwhile, was dressed in a pristine gown with her hair perfectly in place. Apparently, figuring out who had bullied whom required excellent eyesight.Ms. Wayland quickly explained the situation. After hearing the whole story, not only did Mrs. Belknap not blame Amber, but she also frowned at Cody."Amber was always under the impression that you two weren't related. Since you knew she had feelings for you, why didn't you clarify things sooner?"Cody was dumbfounded. "How many sentences have I even spoken to her?"Amb

When the surveillance footage finished playing, Amber's first thought wasn't to apologize. Instead, she rushed to the control console and yanked the cable connecting it to the big screen. The display immediately turned black. But none of the hundreds of people in the auditorium were blind.Amber stood there clutching the cable, tears welling up in her eyes right on cue."I was just so angry at the time," she sobbed. "I've liked Cody for three years, and yet she was always flaunting herself in front of me. I had no idea she had allergies!"Matt immediately stepped in to defend her."It was my idea to lock the door. Amber just got triggered by Rachel."I tilted my head at him. "So she's in charge of locking the door, and you're in charge of taking the blame for her. You student council members sure have a clear division of labor, huh?"A few snickers broke out in the crowd.Matt's face flushed red. "Cut the sarcasm. If you hadn't deliberately hidden the fact that you two were sib

The auditorium went dead silent except for the faint hum of static coming through the speakers. There wasn't even time for the coy look on Amber's face to fade before it froze into something that was ripe to be memed.Matt was the first to react. "That's impossible. You two don't even have the same last name."Cody shot him a glance. "I took our dad's last name, and she took our mom's. Is that against the law?"Matt opened his mouth, but no words came out even after a long pause.By then, people in the audience were already frantically scrolling through old posts on the campus forum."No wonder Rachel could get into Cody's house.""No wonder she had his house keys and debit card.""So that underwear really was her brother's?""Oh my god. What on earth did we just witness?"Holding the microphone, I helpfully chimed in, "100% pure cotton boxers. Three-pack for 15 dollars. Free shipping."Cody's face went dark."Rachel, shut up.""Oh."Guess he thought I wasn't being detail
