Chapter 3

Author: Steal a Star Candy
The next day was the school anniversary celebration.

The second I walked onto campus that morning, I could feel eyes following me from every direction—some were pitiful, while others were contemptuous. Some even clutched their backpacks tighter when they saw me, as if I wasn't just stealing guys' underwear but also stealing stationery on the side, too.

I found out why soon enough.

Amber had posted the underwear photo on the campus forum. On top of that, she had also posted photos of me leaving the Ferrers' house in the morning, getting into a car wearing Cody's jacket, and entering his bedroom in the middle of the night.

She'd thoughtfully put all the photos in a nine-picture grid and captioned it, "From bringing him breakfast to sneaking into his bedroom at night… just how pathetic can a stalker get?"

The comments section was a gold mine.

Some suggested Cody check his bedroom for hidden cameras. Some suspected I was secretly collecting his hair. And others claimed that I was trying to clone Cody.

I was genuinely in awe. With how great their imaginations were, how was the average literature grade at our school not going up?

The pictures themselves were all real. But the house I was leaving in the first picture was my own house. The jacket in the second picture was one Cody had tossed to me after he outgrew it. And in the third, Mom had sent me into his room to yank the blankets off him. Cody had set 17 alarms that morning, and yet none of them had managed to wake him up.

As for the underwear photo, I had taken it while I was taking in the laundry from the balcony. Cody had thrown a white button-down shirt and a pair of red socks into the washing machine together, which successfully produced a shirt the color of radioactive Barbie.

I had posted the picture on my social media with the caption, "His Highness is incapable of taking care of himself. I recommend sending him back to the factory for a total reset."

Amber had cropped out the text and the racks of laundry across the balcony, leaving only me and that pair of underwear.

I had to give her credit. The media industry had suffered a devastating loss by not having her run a clickbait account.

I went to the office to ask Ms. Wayland to take the post down. She, however, was busy organizing the hosts' script for that evening's celebration and didn't even bother looking up.

"We'll deal with it after the event tonight."

"The post has already spread all over school," I argued.

"Amber is hosting tonight and accepting an award for being an outstanding student," she answered. "If you go looking for her now, it'll only affect her state of mind."

I looked down at the insults plastered across the campus forum. Apparently, Amber's state of mind was something to be protected, while my reputation was public property and fair game for anyone to trash.

I reached out to take my confiscated phone, but Ms. Wayland just slammed the drawer shut.

"It's not time for you to have it back. Rachel, if you'd just been careful about maintaining an appropriate distance from male students, would anyone have gotten the wrong idea?"

I didn't know what to say to that. It turned out my biggest mistake was that I hadn't been keeping a six-foot safety distance from my brother since birth.

When I left the office, Amber was already waiting outside, holding a stack of flyers. My face was printed on them, and underneath it, in huge red letters, was "Say No to Campus Stalkers. Say No to Stalking and Harassment!"

"A lot of parents are coming to school today," she said, shoving the flyers into my arms. "Hand these out yourself. Consider it an apology to Cody."

I threw them right back at her. "No."

She didn't get mad. "Fine. Then you don't get to attend the event."

She gave Matt a look. In the next second, they each grabbed one of my arms and dragged me into the backstage area of the auditorium.

There, Amber opened the door to a room stuffed with old curtains and fuzzy props.

"You can stay in here until the event is over. That way, you won't be able to run onto the stage and pretend to play the victim again."

I was shoved inside, and the door slammed shut right in my face. A second later, I heard the heavy click of a lock outside.

I lunged forward and pounded on the door. "Amber Belknap! This is unlawful imprisonment!"

Matt scoffed from the other side. "Save the threats. We'll let you out when the event's over."

I wanted to keep yelling, but my nose suddenly started itching. The room was covered in a thick layer of dust. Ever since I was a kid, I'd had a severe dust allergy.

Within ten minutes, my eyes were already swollen, and my chest was getting tighter.

I banged on the door with everything I had. "Open the door! I'm having an allergic reaction!"

There was silence on the other side for about two seconds before Amber's voice drifted through the door.

"Stop pretending. Cody isn't even back yet, so there's no one here to watch you play the victim."

The click of her high heels faded into the distance.

Music began playing in the auditorium. The emcee excitedly announced that the competition team had just finished their event and was already on their way back to campus.

I slowly slid down against the door and sat on the floor.

If they didn't let me out soon, the first thing Cody would have to do after returning to school wouldn't be hosting the celebration.

It would be going to the hospital to identify his one and only sister's body.

After Amber received her disciplinary sanction, a new tradition suddenly started at school.Every single day, whenever I walked by with Cody, people would stare at the two of us, as if they were trying to spot proof that we were actually related. Some people said our eyebrows looked alike. Others said we had the exact same tone when we told people off. But one person summed it up best of all."They both have the same 'I couldn't care less if you die' kind of punchability."I wholeheartedly agreed with the first half, while Cody could take ownership of the "punchability" part.I got my phone, the debit card, and Cody's jersey back. The house keys, however, were never recovered from the bottom of the lake. The Belknaps paid for the locks to be replaced, along with my medical bills and the property damage. The school also revised its policy on the confiscation of student property by the student council. To put it simply, from now on, if anyone dared to confiscate someone else's hou

I listened to the recording three times. The first time, I was shocked. The second time, I was confused. By the third time, I was almost impressed. Because every single word in it had really come from my mouth. The thing was, they weren't spoken on the same day or in the same context."If Amber doesn't" was pulled from yesterday's meeting, "drop out of school" came from when I was trying to convince my deskmate not to quit our school's chess club, and "I'll make sure her reputation is completely ruined" was cobbled together from fragments of phrases I encountered while reading a passage aloud in literature class. The sheer amount of work the editor had put in was mind-boggling. To hate me to this extent took a truly terrifying level of dedication. After the recording was posted, public opinion swayed again.Amber also posted a photo from the hospital showing her wrist wrapped in gauze. She claimed she'd been subjected to cyberbullying and was now too scared to set foot on campus.

The moment she heard me mention the police, Mrs. Belknap's expression finally changed."It's just a minor squabble between classmates. Is that really necessary?" she demanded."Yes, it is," I answered, pointing to my still-shaking hand. "Your daughter's future may be valuable, but my life isn't cheap either."Mrs. Belknap was about to say something else when the principal, Mr. Previnksy, hurried over. He immediately had the students cleared out, then asked both families to meet in the conference room.Since my parents were still out of town, they could only join via video call.Just before stepping into the conference room, Amber suddenly grabbed my arm."Rachel," she said, her eyes red, her voice so low that only the two of us could hear. "Must you ruin my life?"I yanked my hand back. "You locked the door. You made the posts. You took my stuff. So how am I suddenly the bad guy the second the cops are involved?"She bit down on her lip. "I just like Cody, that's all."There i

The post never actually went live, but screenshots of it had already spread through the entire grade's group chats.Half an hour later, Amber's mother, Mrs. Belknap, arrived at school. The moment she rushed in, she pulled Amber into a hug before turning to me."You're the one bullying Amber?" she demanded.I looked down at myself. My clothes were dirty, and my arms were scratched up with splinters. My phone, debit card, and house keys were all still missing.Amber, meanwhile, was dressed in a pristine gown with her hair perfectly in place. Apparently, figuring out who had bullied whom required excellent eyesight.Ms. Wayland quickly explained the situation. After hearing the whole story, not only did Mrs. Belknap not blame Amber, but she also frowned at Cody."Amber was always under the impression that you two weren't related. Since you knew she had feelings for you, why didn't you clarify things sooner?"Cody was dumbfounded. "How many sentences have I even spoken to her?"Amb

When the surveillance footage finished playing, Amber's first thought wasn't to apologize. Instead, she rushed to the control console and yanked the cable connecting it to the big screen. The display immediately turned black. But none of the hundreds of people in the auditorium were blind.Amber stood there clutching the cable, tears welling up in her eyes right on cue."I was just so angry at the time," she sobbed. "I've liked Cody for three years, and yet she was always flaunting herself in front of me. I had no idea she had allergies!"Matt immediately stepped in to defend her."It was my idea to lock the door. Amber just got triggered by Rachel."I tilted my head at him. "So she's in charge of locking the door, and you're in charge of taking the blame for her. You student council members sure have a clear division of labor, huh?"A few snickers broke out in the crowd.Matt's face flushed red. "Cut the sarcasm. If you hadn't deliberately hidden the fact that you two were sib

The auditorium went dead silent except for the faint hum of static coming through the speakers. There wasn't even time for the coy look on Amber's face to fade before it froze into something that was ripe to be memed.Matt was the first to react. "That's impossible. You two don't even have the same last name."Cody shot him a glance. "I took our dad's last name, and she took our mom's. Is that against the law?"Matt opened his mouth, but no words came out even after a long pause.By then, people in the audience were already frantically scrolling through old posts on the campus forum."No wonder Rachel could get into Cody's house.""No wonder she had his house keys and debit card.""So that underwear really was her brother's?""Oh my god. What on earth did we just witness?"Holding the microphone, I helpfully chimed in, "100% pure cotton boxers. Three-pack for 15 dollars. Free shipping."Cody's face went dark."Rachel, shut up.""Oh."Guess he thought I wasn't being detail
