Chapter 4

Author: Barking Lucky
On the day of the competition, the organizers double-checked the roster to make sure there were no issues. The buzzers were also inspected on the spot by teachers from every school for defects or problems.

Hugo sat at the station next to ours and lazily glanced my way. "Oh, you actually came."

I nodded. "Yeah."

"I heard you usually sleep in till 8:30 am. Aren't you tired, being up this early today?"

"A little."

"Do you even know how to use the buzzer?"

"I just press the option I want, right?"

He laughed. "More or less."

Several of Greenwood's teachers sighed in frustration. Meanwhile, I asked seriously, "Can I reapply sunscreen during the competition?"

"You can't leave your seat once the round starts."

"What about lip gloss?"

"No."

Sasha cut in, her voice firm. "That's enough."

As if she were afraid she might change her mind, she simply took my makeup bag away. "I'll hold on to this. You can put on whatever you want after the competition."

I lowered my head and didn't argue.

The first three rounds began soon after. In round one, Joe buzzed in first on three questions in a row. On the fourth, he got too aggressive trying to close the gap, missed twice in succession, and was eliminated.

Chris managed to earn 20 points back for Greenwood, but Brookstone deliberately snatched up the math questions he was strongest at, forcing him to buzz in on a biology question outside his comfort zone.

The light flashed red, and Greenwood lost another contestant. That left only Sasha and me.

Before she went up, Sasha handed me a bottle of room-temperature water. "Don't be nervous. Just sit here. That's all you have to do."

I looked down at my seat—my neatly pressed school blazer, a compact mirror, a hydrating face mist, and even a white school cap to block the glare from the stage lights.

Everyone thought I was a pain, but they'd still remembered every one of my ridiculous habits.

I flipped the mirror facedown on the desk. "What about you?"

"What about me?"

"Are you scared?"

Sasha paused. "Yeah."

She looked up at Greenwood's crest. "I've spent three years here. I don't wanna graduate and come back someday to find my school gone."

With that, she walked onto the competition stage.

The final round began, and Brookstone took nine questions in a row.

Joe and Chris were already out; Sasha stood alone onstage, three full pages of scratch work spread in front of her. She still couldn't solve the final ten challenge problems. Greenwood was 90 points behind, so the only way for the school to make a comeback was to get all ten right.

Hugo took off his headset and leaned back in his chair. "Stop trying. Even with 30 minutes, you probably wouldn't be able to solve all ten questions."

Sasha ignored him. She stared hard at her scratch paper, gripping her pen so tightly that her hand had started to shake.

Below the stage, the foundation representative pulled out the funding termination agreement. Mr. Brown clutched the school charter, his knuckles white.

Mr. White's eyes were red-rimmed as he asked, "Can't you give us one more chance?"

The representative shook his head. "Ten years was the deadline. The agreement takes effect the moment the competition ends."

Muffled sobs started coming from the audience. Evie clamped a hand over her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

At last, Sasha entered an answer for the first question. A harsh red light flashed—she was wrong. Greenwood had lost another ten points.

She stood in the middle of the stage, her shoulders trembling. "I'm sorry. I promised everyone I'd win this, but… I can't."

Hugo glanced at the countdown. "One minute to go. You've already lost, Sasha."

Then he deliberately turned toward me. "Greenwood still has its school belle, right? Send her up. You're gonna lose anyway. Might as well do it while looking pretty."

The Brookstone section erupted in laughter.

"Go on up, Geraldine!"

"There are four choices per question. You're bound to guess one right!"

"Maybe if she touches up her makeup first, the answers will magically appear!"

Sasha whipped around. "Shut up!"

She defended me, her eyes red as she glared at Hugo. "Whether she can answer the questions or not, you don't get to humiliate her."

He laughed. "Then admit defeat."

The countdown on the big screen kept dropping.

30, 29, 28…

Mr. Brown shut his eyes. "Forget it. You guys did your best."

Mr. White moved to stand in front of me. "Don't let them bait you. You lose ten points for every wrong answer. If even Sasha can't solve them, there's no point in you going up there. It won't change anything."

I looked at the ten questions filling the screen. There were words and numbers everywhere, and honestly, they looked intimidating. But it only took me a few seconds to scan from the first to the last.

The first question could be solved just by changing the order of operations. The second practically gave away the answer in the wording. The third looked even more familiar—I'd solved the original version when I was 12. They'd only changed a couple of numbers.

The rest weren't much harder. And when I looked at the three pages of calculations Sasha had written, they just felt needlessly complicated.

Hugo was still laughing. "Why aren't you looking in your mirror anymore? Don't tell me you actually wanna attempt the questions."

I hadn't planned on giving him the satisfaction, but the Brookstone section was getting louder and louder. The noise was giving me a headache. At this rate, they were going to ruin the bangs I'd just fixed.

I set down my mirror, slipped the pink hair tie off my wrist, and pulled my hair into a quick ponytail. Then I stepped around Mr. White and took the buzzer from Sasha. "Lemme borrow this."

"Geraldine, you—"

She didn't get to finish speaking. I looked at the screen and casually tapped in a few answers. A second later, chimes rang out as the silent scoreboard came alive.

One by one, all ten challenge questions lit up green. Every answer was correct. Not a single point was missed.

Three years later, I held my first solo design exhibition. Ten minutes before the doors opened, I was still in the dressing room, curling my bangs.Sasha burst in with a stack of folders in her arms. "Geraldine! The place is packed with reporters, and you're not even dressed yet?""It's precisely because there are reporters out there that my bangs have to be perfect," I said."You've been like this since high school.""Good habits deserve to be kept."Sasha had gone on to study law in college and was now in charge of handling my brand contracts.Evie poked her head in. "Our juniors from Greenwood are here. Mr. Brown even brought a banner."My hands paused. "What kind of banner?""'Outstanding Graduate.'""Get rid of it.""Why?""It sounds too outdated."Evie and Sasha cracked up and couldn't stop.Once the exhibition started, I saw a lot of familiar faces in the front row—Mr. Brown, Mr. White, the competition team, and those students who'd almost been forced to drop out wh

School life didn't change much after my identity was exposed. People were just suddenly a lot more enthusiastic. Before, I could leave my backpack on my desk all day, and no one would touch it. Now, as soon as the bell rang, several people would rush over to grab it."I'll take it!""You had it yesterday. It's my turn today!""Quit fighting. There's a laptop in there. You break it, you pay for it."I stood off to the side and said, "There's only a curling iron and sunscreen in there."Everyone went quiet.Sasha pressed a hand to her forehead. "No wonder you keep saying your bag's heavy. You don't bring any books?""I leave my books at school.""Then how do you do your assignments?""I already did them.""When?""When I was 12."Sasha had nothing to say to that.…For the monthly exams, my homeroom teacher dragged a desk over and sat right next to me. He said, "Geraldine, you're not turning in a blank test this time."I'd just taken out my lip gloss when he reached over

The foundation quickly renewed its sponsorship contract with Greenwood for another ten years. The day the news was announced, the school held a celebration on the track field.I'd barely stepped through the school gates when a bunch of students mobbed me.Evie shoved a brand-new umbrella into my hands. "Next time it rains, stop stealing Sasha's. This one's light, and the color's nice, too."Another boy held out a backpack. "My mom spent forever picking this out at the store. I told her you hate heavy ones, so she made sure to get the lightest."People kept coming over with sunscreen, mirrors, and hair ties. Someone even showed up lugging an iron. They said, "I heard you refuse to wear wrinkled uniforms. Come to me from now on. I'm great at getting them perfectly pressed."Pretty soon, my whole desk was buried under gifts. My head started to throb a little. "All I did was participate in a competition."Evie shook her head. "To you, it was just a competition. To us, it means we can

The awards ceremony hadn't even started when Brookstone filed a complaint. They said my performance during the competition was way too different from my usual grades and demanded that the organizers do a public review.Word got out, and Greenwood's students were even angrier than I was."So getting all ten questions right doesn't count, and winning the tie-breaker doesn't count either?""How many times does Brookstone have to lose before they admit defeat?""If they want a review, then they'll get one. Might as well make the humiliation official."Sasha dropped a stack of scratch paper in front of me. "This time, you're not allowed to say your hand's tired."I picked up a pink pen. "This is ugly. It's throwing off my game.""Geraldine…""Fine, fine. I'll write as much as I can."Five teachers came up with the questions for the review match on the spot.Hugo was Brookstone's representative. When the first question appeared, he immediately lowered his head and started calculati

I declined the call. A second later, my phone started ringing again.Sasha glanced down at the screen. "Your grandpa?""No. A telemarketer.""You saved a telemarketer's number as 'Grandpa'?""Scammers are really professional these days."She clearly didn't buy it. Before she could press me, a commotion suddenly broke out at the arena's entrance, and several men in suits strode in. The elderly man in front leaned on a cane, his expression dark enough to be frightening.A reporter recognized him and instantly raised his camera. "Isn't that the chairman of Walker Group? What's he doing here?"I silently grabbed my school cap and pulled it down over my face.Evie looked lost. "Geraldine, is he staring at you?""No.""He's coming this way.""Maybe he's here to watch the competition.""But it's over."I was still scrambling for an excuse when Grandpa stopped right in front of me. He growled, "Geraldine, are you done hiding yet?"The arena went dead silent.Hugo looked at Grand

The arena went dead silent. The host stood there with the mic, speechless. Tech staff rushed onto the stage, frantically checking the screen, the question set, and the buzzer system.I lowered my head and used the blacked-out screen as a mirror. I'd rushed when I tied my hair earlier, and my bangs on the right side were a bit messy.Sasha grabbed my hand. "Geraldine.""What?""Just now, you…" She glanced at the board full of green lights, her voice shaking. "Did you really just choose the answers at random?""More or less," I said.Sasha just about lost it. "You got all ten questions correct, and you're calling that 'more or less'?"Brookstone's coach shot to his feet. "This is impossible! She hands in blank tests every month. How could she answer ten tie-breaker questions in a matter of seconds?"Hugo's expression darkened. "I want the buzzers checked. For all we know, you preloaded the answers in there."Greenwood's section erupted. "So you accuse others of cheating the m
