Chapter 2

Autor: White Warbler
When I opened my eyes again, the sharp smell of disinfectant stung my nose.

Laura was standing by the window, still in her wedding dress. It hurt to look at the corsage pinned to her chest.

Even at that moment, I was still trying to fool myself. I told myself that as long as she gave me an explanation, any explanation, even a lie, I was willing to believe it. But she didn't.

Laura poured me a glass of water, her voice soft as she said, "I'm sorry, Nathan. Kelvin Hill was there for me when I was going through the hardest time of my life. I don't know how I'll ever repay him."

So Kelvin was the name of that man.

"I was even still debating whether to accept his proposal just yesterday. But I'm already pregnant… The baby can't grow up without a father."

The glass slipped from my hand and hit the floor, sending a splash of piping hot water over the back of my hand.

So, his five years of effort meant something, but my six years were just a joke to her?

Laura immediately grabbed my hand and blew on the burn like she actually cared. "Nathan, are you okay? Does it hurt?"

She was still the Laura I knew—the one who cared, who worried, who hated seeing me get hurt. She was so gentle it made my head spin.

Just then, the hospital room door flew open with a bang.

A group of people crowded the doorway, including Kelvin Hill, still in his tuxedo.

Laura withdrew her hand at lightning speed, like she'd been shocked. Kelvin pretended not to notice and walked right over.

"So, you're Laura's childhood friend? If Amber hadn't repeatedly assured me there was nothing between you two, I actually might've gotten the wrong idea."

He stuck out his hand for a handshake. The limited-edition diamond Cartier watch on his wrist caught my eye immediately.

I had seen it at a launch event last month and really liked it.

Laura had noticed me looking at it and bought it without a second thought. I thought she was getting it for me. But clearly, I was just being delusional.

When Kelvin noticed what I was staring at, he took the watch off and held it out to me. "Since you're Laura's old friend, consider this a little wedding favor from us."

The watch felt like a hot coal in my hand. It slipped from my fingers and clattered to the floor.

He froze for a second. "There's no need to be shy. Laura loves surprising me with this stuff. I don't care about material things. I only care about her, so I usually just give this stuff away."

That was when I noticed everyone there had received something.

Every single one was expensive and one-of-a-kind. They were things I had stared at through store windows a hundred times but could never bring myself to buy.

Evidently, Laura had bought them all and let Kelvin hand them out as wedding favors to win people over.

My throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton. I let out a laugh, feeling incredibly bitter.

"Do you know that I had a hand in paying for every single thing you've been giving away?"

Kelvin's smile froze. "What do you mean by that?"

I smirked. "Back when Laura had absolutely nothing, she ate my food, drank my water, lived in my house, and used my money.

"I stretched every penny until I gave myself stomach problems just to scrape together her first round of startup funding. Every dollar she's earned since then has my sweat and sacrifice in it.

"So, I'm not just her childhood friend. I'm also the guy she's been dating for the last six years."

Laura's face went pale. Amber scrambled forward to do damage control.

"Kelvin, don't listen to my brother's nonsense. He had a crazy high fever when he was a kid and it fried his brain. He's delusional—"

"Shut your mouth, Amber Walker!"

I turned to Kelvin. "Laura furrows her brows when she's asleep. She hates closing her eyes when she kisses. She has a red mole on her chest, and if you touch it, she gets ticklish. Am I right, Mr. Hill?"

Kelvin went rigid. Without warning, he threw a hard punch at me.

I had no idea what hard object he was hiding in his hand, but it felt like my cheek had been burned, and a gash opened up instantly.

Laura quickly grabbed his arm, clearly panicking. That only made Kelvin angrier, and he tried to swing again.

Laura instantly threw herself in front of me, taking the full force of a slap.

Kelvin froze, staring at the deep red handprint on Laura's face. The hatred in his eyes only grew more apparent.

His lips turned pale, and his expression was terrifyingly dark. Amber suddenly screamed, "Laura, y-you're bleeding!"

The moment Kelvin saw blood running down Laura's leg, he panicked. "Laura!"

Looking horrified, he scooped her up into his arms and bolted out the door.

  • Everyone but Me Knew She'd Marry Him   Chapter 10

A year later, I got married in Merovia. ZIt was a small wedding, held in a little chapel on the outskirts of the city, tucked among rows of hydrangeas.I stood there in my tuxedo, standing across from the woman who'd been by my side every day, sharing everything from grocery runs to quiet walks. Her palms were sweaty from nerves, and her voice shook when she said, "I do."I smiled and said, "I do too."As we exchanged rings, a sudden breeze blew in through the window. The hydrangeas swayed gently in the breeze. I instinctively glanced toward the door, but there was no one there. There weren't many guests, just a few coworkers from Merovia. No one whooped or cheered. No one was tossing flower petals into the air. It was quiet and simple, much like the two of us.I looked down at the simple band on my finger, and surprisingly, my heart felt full. It turned out that one didn't need the whole world's attention to be happy. Only later did I find out that Laura had shown up that d

For the next month, Laura was like a weed I just couldn't get rid of, showing up every day to pester me.And every time, security would send her packing. By the fourth month, Amber showed up. She was still the same as ever, crying the second things got tough. When the company found out that she'd been cooking the books, HR wanted to fire her.Since Laura had already washed her hands of Amber, Amber decided to kneel outside my company. She wanted to stay there no matter how hard the sun beat down on her or how heavily it rained, hoping I'd eventually cave and ask Laura to help her. This sister of mine was spoiled rotten by my grandma and me. She'd never been through any real hardships, and she was far too easily manipulated. But this time, she needed to learn her lesson the hard way.I ignored her. She only lasted 15 minutes before she couldn't take it anymore, pulling out a knife and threatening to hurt herself to force me out.I didn't even show my face and just called the

By my second month working in Merovia, Laura had tracked me down. I didn't avoid her. There was just no point in running from someone who wasn't worth my time.It was incredibly windy that day. Laura standing outside my office building drew stares from everyone passing by.The second she saw me walk out, she rushed over. "Nathan, can we get back together? I know I wronged you. I'm sorry."I let out a chuckle. "Ms. Hartman, what exactly are you to me right now? An ex-girlfriend? A friend? Or an ex-fiancee?"Her face fell. "Nathan, don't be like this. I got played by Kelvin, and I've already divorced him. Can't we start over? I swear I'll only have eyes for you for the rest of my life. I'll never make the same mistake again."As she spoke, she pulled a ring from her pocket and dropped to one knee in front of me. A crowd started gathering. Camera flashes went off, and people cheered and egged us on."Say yes to her!"As the crowd cheered around us, I took the gold ring from her h

Kelvin waited in the room for a long time, only to realize that Laura wasn't going to come upstairs to coax him.He stayed wide awake until dawn. It wasn't until the housekeeper knocked and asked him to come down for breakfast that he realized Laura had already left.He had all this pent-up anger with no way to release it, so he called Amber and Justin. Ten minutes later, the two of them showed up in front of him."Didn't you say you'd help me get rid of Nathan for good so that Laura would only have eyes for me? So why is Laura unwilling to come to me now that he's gone?"Justin replied coolly, "Kelvin, we could only help you get him out of the picture. Anything beyond that isn't in our wheelhouse. How is it our fault that you can't keep her?""What did you just say?"Kelvin lost it, slapping Justin hard across the face. "You didn't say that when you were taking my money!"And you, Amber. Who bailed you out of that financial hole last month? If Laura found out you made a mistake

Laura closed her eyes, but all she could see was my face. She called everyone she knew who was close to me and eventually called my workplace.Freddy Steele, my coworker, said, "Nathan took the earliest flight out to Merovia this afternoon. The R&D department transferred him there to be the new technical director."Laura froze, speechless for a long time. Freddy then added, almost as an afterthought, "He was originally planning to go to Adaville. He wanted to be reunited with his girlfriend so badly that he worked himself to the bone."Everyone says he's a little slow and is bad at getting things done, but anyone who actually knows him knows he's just exhausted."With the amount of stress he was under, it was only natural that he would be a little slow sometimes. "But then he changed his plans out of nowhere. The rumor going around is that his girlfriend cheated on him."Honestly, Nathan might never come back after this. This is why men shouldn't lose their heads over women.

"Nathan!"Laura rushed over to hold me tightly, her voice shaking. "Have you lost your mind? What do you think you're doing?"Amber freaked out as well and quickly called an ambulance. When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed with thick bandages wrapped around my chest. What a shame—I survived. Laura was sitting beside my bed, holding my hand. She had dark circles under her eyes.I pulled my hand away and rolled over, turning my back to her.She sounded exhausted as she explained, "I know everything now. Kelvin was wrong for that. He's childish and likes to mess around, and the post simply pushed him over the edge."I've already chewed him out. And I'm sorry about your grandma… I just didn't expect her condition to suddenly get that bad. If I had known—""Laura," I cut her off. My voice was quiet, but crystal clear. "You should go. From now on, you and I have nothing to do with each other. We're done."She froze in shock.Laura had probably braced herself for me
