Chapter 2

Author: Orange Isle
The next second, a bolt of purple lightning struck the zombie hound square on the head, instantly vaporizing it into ash.

It was Dylan.

I turned around, only to see Greta throwing herself into his arms, sobbing dramatically. "It's all that dud's fault! She kept wandering off and almost got me killed by that zombie hound!"

Dylan stroked her hair and soothed her gently. "I'm right here. You're safe now."

When he looked up at me, the warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by pure ice. "If I hadn't made it in time, Greta would have been hurt. Jessie, I don't ever want to see this happen again."

Just then, my parents, Allen Brewer and Laura Rogers, rushed over, their faces pale with worry.

Mom grabbed Greta's hands and inspected her top to bottom before hastily casting an elemental barrier around her.

Dad silently channeled his healing powers to mend her non-existent injuries.

Only after confirming Greta was completely untouched did they remember I existed—not out of concern but to reprimand me.

Mom took one look at my battered state and snapped angrily, "Since you don't have powers, stay put at the base! Stop coming out here and causing trouble! Greta suffered outside for 20 years. I won't let her get hurt ever again!"

Frowning, Dad sighed. "Jessie, as punishment for your recklessness, I won't be healing your wounds today. Consider it a lesson learned."

I parted my lips, wanting to tell them what really happened.

But I knew better. The moment Greta was brought back home, their bias had been set in stone.

All Greta had to do was cry, and they would apologetically demand that I hand over my room and clothes to her.

I was kicked out to a dilapidated apartment on the far edge of the base, while Greta had the luxury of taking three showers a day in the middle of an apocalypse.

Even this scavenging run was solely to hunt down makeup for her.

Mom and Dad claimed it was to make it up to Greta.

I clenched my fist. The bullet edge dug painfully into my palm.

Greta was the one who had thrown the bullet that had rolled to my feet.

I treated her like family, but she wanted me dead.

Seeing the entire family back her up, Greta was as smug as ever. Her eyes darted slyly as she pointed at my supply pack, demanding arrogantly, "Hand over everything you found. I'm putting it in my spatial storage!"

I froze, the color draining from my face. "I risked my life for those supplies…"

"So what?" Greta sneered, as if I had said the most hilarious thing in the world.

"You lived off the Brewer family for 20 years. You stole my life and snatched my family. What are a few supplies compared to that? You're not handing it over. You're paying back what you owe me! You've been living in my place for far too long. It's time you gave everything back!"

She pressed forward, pure malice spilling from her eyes.

Dylan rubbed his temples and turned to me with a tired sigh. "The mix-up at birth is still a sore spot for Greta. Just let her have the supplies."

With that, he picked up my bag and tossed it to her.

Greta looked down at the emergency rations inside with utter disdain and muttered, "That's it? What a total waste of space."

Dylan patted her head, his voice softening again. "Don't be mad. Come on, I'll take you to find that perfume you wanted."

Watching their departing backs, I stood frozen in place as my heart slowly sank.

At the research institute, under Robert's introduction, I met Professor Anthony Watts, the institute's top virologist. He told me that Ethan's blood test results yielded a groundbreaking discovery.People treated by my healing power developed a unique serum in their bodies. This serum could target and devour the zombie virus within infected individuals, completely dismantling its active structure.Once injected with this serum, a person gained lifelong immunity. In other words, the zombie virus had been cured!Anthony looked at me as if I were a priceless treasure. "Ms. Brewer, we'll be relying on you heavily moving forward."For an entire month, I barely closed my eyes. I stayed at the medical center to heal every wounded patient. The institute staff followed right behind me, extracting serum from those healed to produce vaccines around the clock.A week later, the good news arrived. The vaccine was officially rolled out.Within six months, the entire country had been vaccin

Beside the wreckage of the SUV, Dylan and Greta erupted into a fierce argument."This is all your fault! Why did you ever have to show up?"Dylan's eyes were bloodshot. The warmth in his gaze was completely replaced by bone-deep hatred."If you hadn't targeted Jessie at every turn, she would never have given up on us! You dragged her to block that zombie hound, you framed her for stealing supplies, and you intentionally tried to trip her so she'd die! You toxic curse, you ruined us all!"Not to be outdone, Greta shrieked back, "Oh, look at you! You knew everything all along, yet you stood by and let it happen!"You enabled me to snatch her things and let me drive her away! You were the one who held a gun to her head, sliced her wrist open, and pushed her to her death! The person who stripped this family of their powers is you!"Looking at Dylan's enraged face, she even pulled out the gun tucked in her coat and sneered bitterly. "I learned it all from you. I used the gun you gave

Dylan froze, staring at me in complete disbelief. He rasped, "What… do you mean?"I suddenly laughed.I slowly raised my left arm and turned the bloody gash on my wrist directly toward him. "You cut this yourself."I looked up, staring into his eyes with complete calm. "It hurt. So I've decided not to use my healing power on it. I'm keeping this scar as a permanent reminder of that pain."Dylan shuddered violently and took an unsteady step back, unable to hold my gaze.Allen and Laura flinched as the vivid red wound caught their eyes. They were accomplices in throwing me away.Their complexions turned ash-gray, and even their heavy breathing filled with despair.Greta cowered in the corner, terrified I might turn my attention to her.As I watched them crumble, a cold smile bloomed on my lips. "Don't worry. I'm not going to kill you."The Brewers wiped the cold sweat from their brows, letting out a collective sigh of relief.I looked at them with amusement and spoke deliberat

Those words completely shattered the Brewers' pride.Dylan's lips trembled, and his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. On the very first day of the apocalypse, he had awakened as the strongest superhuman, building his own base and ruling like a king. And now, I was telling him he was nothing more than a dud. It hurt him worse than death itself.I looked away from them and turned toward Ethan at my side.I had only given him a bag of food, yet he was willing to risk his life for me.A loyal soul like him was the real family I wanted."This is Ethan Davidson, my brother," I said, my tone instantly softening as I introduced him to the Brewers. "His power is mind control."The crowd broke into an uproar.Just minutes ago, Ethan had been as ordinary as anyone could be, yet now he had suddenly transformed into a superhuman? Some had even watched him get mauled by zombies with their own eyes, yet not only was he uninfected, but he was completely unharmed. The whole

A monster?I sneered internally. When I had no superpowers, I was a dud. Now that I had powers, I was a monster.Pure terror flashed through Greta's eyes. She whipped her head toward the surrounding superhumans and shrieked, "She can control the zombies! She's not human! She's a monster! As long as she's alive, none of us will make it out!"Already on the brink of breakdown, Greta's scream pushed the crowd's fear over the edge, overwhelming their reason."Kill her!""Attack together! We have to kill her to survive!"The superhumans unleashed their powers, hurling a frenzy of attacks at me.Meanwhile, Greta ducked behind the crowd, aimed a gun straight at my head, and pulled the trigger."Die!"But the next second, everyone froze.Countless wind blades, earth spikes, flames, icicles, and even bullets stopped dead in their tracks 30 feet away, bouncing off an invisible barrier.Seeing this surreal sight, Laura turned as pale as a ghost. Her chest heaved violently as she let o

I closed my eyes and whispered in my mind, "Revoke."The next second, a translucent barrier burst open with me at its center, repelling every lunging zombie 30 feet back.Even the zombie king was flung through the air, letting out a furious roar. Was this absolute defense?I was no longer just an ordinary superhuman. I possessed lightning, defense, healing, and spatial powers all at once. And I could feel it deep down that these powers were far stronger now than they had ever been.Enraged, the zombie king kept hammering against the barrier while locking its crimson eyes onto me.I raised a hand, and a purple thunderbolt thicker than a tree trunk crashed down from the sky, striking it square on the head.As the residual energy dissipated, nothing was left on the ground but a pile of ash. With the zombie king dead, the horde lost its organization and scattered, swarming straight toward the squad instead.I rushed over to Ethan, who was covered in blood.Gruesome claw marks co
