Chapter 2 The Beginning of the Counterattack

Auteur: Perfect Timing
Penelope looked at me in surprise. But when she turned toward me, all she saw was a face covered in tears.

"Mom, did my coming home make Wendy unhappy? She's had your love all these years. I'm more jealous of that than anything else. How could I possibly laugh at her? What right would I even have to mock Wendy?"

The more I spoke, the quieter my voice became. My words trembled as I cautiously dragged my suitcase backward.

"Mom, maybe I never should have come back. My return has only made everyone unhappy. I'm sorry, Mom. Maybe I should just leave."

"Wendy." Penelope's voice turned stern. "I've spoiled you too much. I already told you that you were staying with us. How could you lie and accuse Anya like that?"

Wendy had always been Penelope's favorite, cherished and protected. It was the first time Penelope had ever scolded her so harshly.

Only then did Wendy realize she had said the wrong thing.

She admitted her mistake quickly. "I'm sorry, Mom. I misspoke. I didn't mean it that way."

Penelope's attention immediately shifted back to me. She took my hand and fussed over me with concern.

This was treatment I had never received in my previous life, but this time, I wasn't going to fool myself into being moved by a little sympathy.

Back then, after returning to the Sutton family, I had spent every day carefully trying to please everyone. I memorized each family member's likes and dislikes. I cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner myself, all for the sake of earning a single compliment.

I had been a wealthy heiress in name, yet I lived more like the family's maid. Even so, I never earned the Sutton family's approval.

Although I inherited Julian Sutton and Penelope's remarkable musical talent and eventually became a moderately successful composer, I remained hidden in the Sutton family's shadow, unseen and unacknowledged.

After realizing I was not as easy to manipulate as she had expected, Wendy behaved herself for a while.

The two of us maintained a surface-level peace.

At the same time, I needed to continue playing the role of the obedient daughter in front of Julian and Penelope, so I didn't openly target Wendy either.

Every week, Wendy took piano lessons personally taught by Julian.

Like a proud peacock, she constantly showed off her accomplishments in front of me, hoping to make me feel inferior.

Unfortunately for her, I wanted exactly those opportunities to show off.

Wendy had studied piano since childhood. Through years of hard work, she had won numerous awards and built an impressive reputation. In my previous life, her achievements in music had made her the pride and joy of Julian and Penelope.

Once upon a time, I had envied her.

Dressed in a white gown, sitting gracefully at the piano while receiving endless praise, she had looked like a fairy-tale princess.

That was before I discovered just how extraordinary my own talent was.

After only one week of touching a piano, I could already play an entire piece flawlessly after hearing it once.

My fingers were long, agile, and strong. They seemed born for the keyboard. However, before anyone could discover that gift, Wendy destroyed it with her own hands.

I would never forget the way she bullied me.

She had slammed the piano lid down on my fingers, crushing them one by one until they went completely numb.

Then, she told Penelope that I had secretly been fooling around on the piano, accidentally damaged it, and injured my hand in the process.

According to her, if she had not found me in time, my hand might have been permanently ruined. The fact that I could still write normally was supposedly a miracle.

Looking back now, the whole thing was ridiculous.

My fingers had been trapped, not my entire body. If I had truly been injured by accident, I could have moved away myself.

The lie was full of holes, yet Julian and Penelope had believed every word. The thought was almost laughable.

As I sat in the living room, Wendy's piano music flowed through the house. The piece was not easy. It was obvious she had spent countless hours practicing it.

When she finished, a rare smile finally appeared on Julian's face.

Before he could praise her, I walked into the piano room, clapping enthusiastically. "Wendy, you're amazing. That's such a difficult piece, and you played it beautifully."

Wow.Just as I expected, Frederick's expression changed the moment he heard her words.Conflict flashed across his face. He looked at me for a long moment, clearly torn. In the end, his joy of becoming a father won out."I'm sorry, Anya. I can't be the kind of man who abandons his responsibilities. I hope I can meet you first in our next life."I nearly burst out laughing. Still, my voice was shaky from barely hidden amusement as I snarked, "Frederick, could you stop flattering yourself? Who exactly gave you the impression that I'd ever be interested in you?"Then, I stopped paying attention to the two of them and promptly sauntered away.Wendy's reputation was destroyed beyond repair. Now that she was pregnant as well, I doubted she would have much time or energy to interfere in my life anymore. The desire for revenge that had once consumed me gradually faded.I later heard from the rumor mill

I pulled out the copyright certificate I had prepared long ago and tossed it onto the table in front of Wendy. The registration date clearly showed that the song had been copyrighted five years earlier, a full two years before Wendy had first released it online. She hadn't even bothered changing the title.Wendy's eyes widened with fury the second she saw the certificate."Anya, you set me up! This was all part of your plan. You left those manuscripts in the piano room on purpose. You've been biding your time all these years. You've spent years plotting against me. Aren't you exhausted? Anya, you're terrifying.""Oh, darling, please!" I snickered. "How could you call this a setup when I don't remember forcing you to steal my music? Did I make you take those manuscripts? Did I make you publish those songs under your own name?"Then, I looked at her dead in the eye. "Wendy, perhaps you should spend less time blaming everyone else and more time examining your own flaws. Not everyone

Perhaps Julian and Penelope felt guilty toward me as they found themselves caught in an impossible situation. They knew Wendy and I could no longer live under the same roof. Yet, they also couldn't bear to sever the bond they had built with her over the past 15 years. In the end, they decided to send Wendy overseas to continue studying piano at a music academy abroad. In the weeks before her departure, Wendy actually behaved herself for a change.…Meanwhile, I deliberately left several copyrighted compositions in the piano room where Julian and I practiced. I made sure to leave the manuscripts in the most noticeable spot possible. So, it was only natural for Wendy's eyes to fall on them when she entered the room looking for Julian.I saw the flash of amazement in her eyes.I then saw how she quietly slipped the manuscripts into her bag and stole them away when no one was paying attention. "That wasn't what happened! Please, you have to believe me. Anya really did hit me. I wasn't putting on an act!" Wendy cried out in dismay. She panicked and grabbed Penelope and Frederick by the arms, desperately trying to defend herself. Alas, both of them pulled away from her. As she stood in the middle of the crowd, she quickly found that not a single person was looking at her with sympathy.Since I was armed with video evidence, her excuses carried no weight."It was you. This was a setup! Why else were you carrying a camera around? You wanted to humiliate me on purpose, didn't you?" Wendy's voice grew increasingly hysterical, making my ears ache. Before I could respond, someone nearby spoke up for me."Everyone at school knows that Anya is working on promotional videos for the school. She's always filming outstanding students and their daily activities. Of course, she'd be carrying a camera. Honestly, I would've fallen for your performance if she hadn't recorded it all.""God

Wendy was completely unable to fight back. The commotion inside the stall quickly drew attention, and the people outside began pounding frantically on the door."Anya, have you lost your mind? Let Wendy go right now, or I swear I won't let this go!" Frederick's furious voice rang out from outside.By then, I had vented my anger enough. So, I released Wendy's hair, watching a few strands float down the floor. Her face was badly swollen, bright red handprints covering both cheeks. She stared at me as if she had just seen a ghost.Wendy rushed out of the restroom the second the door was rammed open. She was clutching her cheek with her hands as she threw herself into Frederick's arms and burst into loud sobs.Frederick looked heartbroken.Penelope stood next to him and gently patted Wendy's back. The look she gave me was filled with disappointment and anger."Anya, I never imagined you could be this cruel. What did Wendy ever do to deserve this? I was wrong about you. I honestly t
