In my arms, my son blinked, puzzled. "Mommy, who's that man?"

"Nobody. Don't listen to him. Let's go."

I scooped him up and turned to leave.

After Chase Reed left, I'd gotten rid of the baby I'd been carrying and married someone else. My husband and I were happy together, deeply in love. The son in my arms had nothing to do with Chase.

"Ivy, are you still mad at me? How can you keep a son from knowing his own father?"

Chase blocked my path, his face dark with anger.

I met his eyes, calm and unshaken. "We've been apart for three years. What makes you think you're his father? He isn't your son."

Chase let out a sigh. "You're still holding it against me that I left for so long. But freedom is in my nature—I was never going to give it up for a child. I needed time to be myself."

I held my son tighter and shook my head. "Chase, I'm not holding anything against you. I love my husband, and you and I have nothing left between us. Move."

Back when we'd agreed to spend the rest of our lives together, I'd let him skip registering our marriage, all in the name of his precious freedom. Then I got pregnant, and he was still off cycling with his "buddy" every chance he got.

Morning sickness, leg cramps, sleepless nights—I endured all of it alone. Even so, he complained behind my back to Monica Cole about how stressful my pregnancy was making his life.

The two of them hit it off immediately and decided to spend three years cycling out to the Rockies. When it came to childbirth and raising a kid, Monica told him not to worry about it—that women just handled that instinctively. Chase believed her.

By the time I was five months along, I could barely move without pain. I went to the hospital for treatment, and when I came back, they were gone. Not even a word goodbye.

That was the moment I made my decision. Shaking, I turned around and walked straight back to the hospital, and had the pregnancy terminated that same day.

I've thanked myself for that courage ever since. If I hadn't done it, I wouldn't have the life I have now.

Sensing how cold I'd gone, Chase frowned. "There you go again, talking like you're still bitter. You must still care about me somewhere in there. Otherwise, why bring the kid to find me before the three years were even up?"

I thought I'd made myself more than clear, but none of it seemed to reach him. I insisted he get out of my way.

Finally, looking as though he were making some agonizing concession, he said, "Fine. For the kid's sake, if you fix that attitude of yours, I'll let you two tag along. But I don't have the energy to look after you both—don't get in the way of my plans."

I glanced over his temp-job uniform. He was probably picking up odd jobs wherever the road took him. Following him would mean nothing but hardship.

I wasn't going to waste any more time on him. I moved to walk around him with my son in my arms, but he threw out an arm and blocked me.

His voice turned urgent. "Ivy, what are you doing? Whatever you say, I'm still his father!"

My son couldn't help lifting his head, glancing between the two of us, and asking with innocent confusion, "Mommy, why do I have two daddies?"

Chase's whole body tensed. His eyes glistened with tears, but finally, he dropped his head in defeat and said nothing. He needed time to process the truth—the wife and kid he'd imagined were never his to begin with.Nathan wrapped an arm around me, ready to leave.Monica let out a smug little laugh and made moves to head out too. The show was over, she hadn't done anything wrong, and there was no reason for her to stick around. But Nathan's lawyer stepped forward at just the right moment. "Monica Cole, given that you publicly slandered and defamed my client, Ms. Ivy Turner, in a public setting, damaging her reputation, we will be initiating legal proceedings.""What?"Monica's eyes went wide with shock. She stared at the lawyer, then at us, clearly stunned.Apparently, in the span of just a few minutes, the legal team had already put together a game plan."The amount of damages we'll be seeking for reputational harm will be substantial. I'd advise you to start preparing the fun

I turned around. With the officers keeping watch over him, the best Chase could do was get to his feet—he couldn't come any closer. He looked like he refused to let go."Ivy, if... if I'd only asked you to wait two years back then, or even a year and a half—would you have waited?"The question was a test, and a laughable one at that. He still believed I'd cut ties with him because he'd made me wait too long. But it wasn't the length of time that had killed anything I felt for him. It was his selfishness.I was reasonable enough to understand that freedom mattered to him, and I would never have stopped him from chasing that cycling trip he'd dreamed of. But he'd chosen, of all times, to leave the moment I was pregnant and needed someone the most. I'd been about to give birth. The baby would be here any day. Both the baby and I needed care. And he'd trusted Monica's word that maternal instinct alone would handle everything, and walked away regardless—whether out of genuine stupidity

"I thought he was my son!" Chase cut in, his face flushed with panic. "You can't blame me for the mistake! She was still pregnant with my kid when I left—I was only gone three years, and she wouldn't even wait for me! That's a complete betrayal!"A younger officer frowned at him, as if he'd just heard something utterly unbelievable. "She was pregnant, and you left for three years, and you expected her to wait for you?"The senior officer looked at Chase with the same confusion but kept his tone even and formal. "Do you have any written agreement or legal documentation?"Chase faltered. "No... I don't."The younger officer muttered bluntly, "This selfish, and still won't leave her alone? What, were you expecting her to wait for you to come home forever?"Chase's face went instantly red."All right," the senior officer said, glancing around at everyone present. "Let's take this down to the station."By the time we reached the station, Nathan's legal team was already waiting. Chase

"Don't touch her!" Chase bellowed, fury in every word. "Don't think money makes you untouchable! People would tear you apart if they knew you stole another man's wife! I'll see you ruined for this!"Nathan let out a cold laugh. "Who exactly should be worried about being ruined? Ivy was pregnant, and the two of you left without a word—how is that any different from eloping together?"You two got to go off on your merry way, and Ivy was supposed to stay faithful, guarding her virtue like some saint? And about 'stealing another man's wife'—there's no marriage certificate. What wife?"Monica tried to argue anyway. "Hmph! So Ivy gets a pass for secretly getting an abortion and running off with another man—""Monica!" The manager hurried over and pulled her back. "That's enough out of you. You've been freeloading at my guesthouse this whole time, and you have the nerve to disrespect my boss like this?"He turned to Nathan and me and bowed apologetically. "I'm so sorry. I had no idea you

To spare Rowan any more of this nonsense, I had Nathan set him down and had one of the guides take him to wait in the car.Chase watched him go, and finally let out a defeated sigh. He'd seen it clearly enough just now—Nathan and Rowan standing together looked like they'd been cut from the same mold. The evidence spoke for itself. He no longer had any grounds left to claim that child as his. When he turned back to me, his voice was thick with accusation. "And what about our child? He's still so young—why haven't you kept him close? Is this how irresponsible you are?"Even if you married Nathan, you had no right to take my child and raise him with another man without my permission! I don't even know if he's being taken care of properly!"I let out a mocking laugh. Now he wanted to play the concerned father, worrying whether his child was doing well? Back then, he'd run off chasing his so-called freedom. He never planned to be there for the birth, never planned to raise an infant.

Two tall figures shot out of nowhere, one from each side, and chopped down hard on Chase's arm.The guides pulled Chase back the moment he flinched in pain, while Nathan swept in and scooped Rowan into his arms. I rushed over to check on him."Baby, does anything hurt?"Rowan leaned into Nathan's chest and shook his head timidly. A second ago, with Chase gripping him, none of us had dared pull too hard for fear of hurting him. Thankfully, Rowan had only been startled—nothing else was wrong. I finally let out the breath I'd been holding.Nathan freed one arm to wrap around my shoulders, his eyes full of concern. "You okay, honey?"I shook my head. "I'm fine."Feeling the warmth radiating from him, my heart finally settled completely. The first time we'd met, he'd shown up looking every bit like a hero, too. Back then, I'd just recovered from the miscarriage and taken a job doing hotel maintenance. A guest with bad intentions had cornered me—three grown men trying to drag me into
